Ubuntu :: Rhythmbox Stalls System - Consumes All Memory

Sep 1, 2010

Rhythmbox stalls my computer. I start it and within 10-20 seconds it starts to search something (i.e. in the right bottom there appears a box with a red box sliding left and right). It consumes all my memory (1 giga) and the only thing it does is identify text files in a general directory, NOT in Music. I have completely removed the install, installed it again, the same text files earlier IDed are still there? Is there an alternative?
Computer details: Intel dual core, Nvidia, 64 bit Lucid. The flaw is that it runs on single memory.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Karmic 9.10 - RhythmBox Memory Usage Skyrockets

Apr 2, 2010

I've been using Rhythmbox for a while now and I've noticed that it begins to gobble up all the available memory - forcing me to restart it. I think I finally figured out why - Daap share and skip. All my music is on a share and when I skip through it (I have it on random and usually need to do about 5 skips before I find the next song I want to hear) Rhythmbox's memory usage skyrockets. Is this fixed in a newer version? Using Rhythmbox 0.12.5 on Karmic 9.10.

Ubuntu Networking :: Ksoftirqd Consumes 100% CPU For Several Minutes?

Jul 12, 2010

I've had this problem recently. Whenever I open an open office.org document from a cifs/SAMBA share as I navigate through it my laptop will lock up, and by lock up I mean so bad that I can't even move the mouse. If I let it sit for anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes it will come out of it. Trying to navigate through the document again will trigger a similar episode.

I finally got fed up and opened a terminal with top and set it to always on top, then I opened my samba share, opened my spreadsheet. and proceeded to trigger my problem. When the lockup happened it was so bad and so quick that top stopped updating and I wasn't even able to see something creep up in CPU usage. As it came out of it top started updating in bursts, first ksoftirqd/0 was at 100%, then that dropped to near nothing, then xorg spiked to 100%, then the system returned to normal.

I googled around an found lots of speculation, and bug reports that were way above my head. Some of the speculation suggested it was a kernel issue, but that has supposedly been fixed. Another forum post said that it was a multi-processor issue. (the guy was running it in a vm so he just removed the vCPU) And yet another suggested a network issue/attack. I am running a Dell Latitude D620 with a dual core Intel proc and a Broadcomm network card (wired) and an Intel wireless card. I have all the latest updates. The shares I experience this issue with (only shares I really use) are on a Netapp and are active directory integrated (my laptop is not joined to the domain)

Ubuntu Installation :: Mythbuntu System Hangs After Regular System Update: "out Of Memory" Errors

Aug 4, 2010

I have Mythbuntu 10.04 installed on an exclusive HTPC and working great... until tonight. After letting the system update some packages (161 packages if I remember right), I suddenly have an issue where the graphical system won't start. After researching I found three error messages that might be causing that.

1. At the start of splash screen I see "UUID=xxxxxxxCD7 not ready yet or not present" I checked in /etc/fstab and found that this is the swap partition. I don't remember seeing this before so this could be the culprit.

2. I'm not at the computer in question right now but I saw a Plymouth error about "mountall" and then the message "plymouth command failed". Not sure if this could be the main error.

3. after a while (usually ca. 1-2 min) I receive thousands of errors of the kind "out of memory"... "kill process XXXX" (process vary wildly e.g. dbus-daemon, mysql, etc)... "process killed"..."respawning"

After error 3, I'm not able to switch to graphical console (ctrl-alt-F7). If I was in the graphical console at this moment, I simply can't switch to the CLI console. I'm always afraid of updating my system since I've seen lots of things breaking afterwards (usually the proprietary graphic drivers) but this is really strange.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: HD Video Consumes 100% Cpu But Not In XP?

Oct 6, 2010

I am using the rather old openSUSE 11.0 with no plans of upgrading to 11.3 as of now. My system is also 5+ years with a P4 2.66GHz but with 2.5Gb ram. HD videos are utilizing 100% cpu and the video also keeps shaking. Neither does any other app work during this time. I cannot even stop the player. I've tried mplayer, smplayer, vlc, totem, gnome-player --- all with the same result.

But windows XP utilizes about 60% cpu and so no such problems. I also have ubuntu 7.10 installed and even mplayer here uses 100% cpu. Also not a troublesome issue but XP has higher volume.

Slackware :: (rhythmbox:15745): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Could Not Open Device /dev/radio0

Aug 8, 2010

we were watching Clint Eastwood in Pink Cadillac on DVD. Earlier, I had been checking out the streaming internet radio on my roommates Mint laptop using Rhythmbox, and found it to be pretty cool. Usually, if I stream any music, it's just from the CBC (like the U.S.'s NPR), so I just stream it directly from them, but all the stations on rhythmbox (there's a whack of them) got me interested. At the start of Pink Cadillac, I proposed myself a challenge: Could I manage to get rhythmbox (a GNOME application) to work on my Slack64 -current box, before the movie ended? There's probably (maybe?) a similar app that installs and works more natively on Slack, but that's not the point; I wanted to try installing rhythmbox in < 2 hrs. Well, I got it installed finally, *just* at the end of the movie credits, but it won't play! And sometimes it segfaults. So, I wonder if anyone has any tips about what I might be missing or whatever.

Here's what I typically get when I first start it up (though it starts & runs OK):

Code:

sasha@reactor: rhythmbox
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".
(rhythmbox:15745): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: IA__gdk_pixbuf_get_width: assertion `GDK_IS_PIXBUF (pixbuf)' failed
(rhythmbox:15745): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Unable to grab media player keys: Could not get owner of name 'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon': no such name

[code].....

Seems even on systems with some sort of 'natural' support for installing this thing, a lot of people are getting the same or very similar errors, but I haven't found a solution (obviously - I wouldn't be posting otherwise ) but people, myself included, have discovered that there doesn't seem to be a 100% accurate list of *required* dependencies for rhythmbox; it needs stuff that it doesn't tell you it needs.

EDIT: Disclaimer (just to cut the 'dependency-hell' arguments off at the pass, so to speak): This is just a fun experiment for me. I don't suggest Slackware newbies start trying to install <xyz Gnome application> into their Slackware boxes unless you want to spend HOURS fixing stuff like this, and you want to have fun doing it, and have it maybe bork your box up. And if you *do* decide to try it anyways, don't blame Slackware for giving you dependency hell. Gnome doesn't come with Slackware (here's the ChangeLog). I like Slackware exactly the way it is - it comes with more than enough apps to satisfy most people, all nicely working out of the box, so installing stuff like this is not really necessary - but I'm choosing to do this one anyway, and am not deterred by this "mess" of stuff. If this dependency stuff isn't your 'cup of tea', an 'automatically-dependency-resolving' distro might be better for you; I prefer to mess my machine up on my own, rather than let my package manager do it for me.

Ubuntu :: Memory Maxed Out And System Freezes Up?

Mar 7, 2011

Is there something similar to the windows TSR thing in Linux? (terminate & stay resident)

The reason I ask is that after replacing my HD and reinstalling Maverick I've noticed the PC freezing up afew times. It seems that memory gets used up and then doesnt free up after the application is closed. The last couple of times this happened today I was doing

1. Copying a number of photos from my flash drive to the HD

2. Burnt a disk with Brasero.

After doing this it froze and I had to crash the system and reboot. I don't remeber this happening before.

Apart from this memory problem it's working OK I think. My system specs are below

Code:
mbdb@M2000:~$ sudo lshw
m2000
description: Notebook
product: Presario M2000 (EK823EA#ABU)

Fedora Hardware :: Cannot Use All Of System Memory?

Jun 6, 2010

I just installed Fedora 13 onto a "new" (to me) box, and everything seems mostly fine, except that I only seem to be able to use about 900.2 MiB of 991.4 MiB of RAM memory, according to System Monitor. I haven't set up a swap partition yet, so the problem became very, very, very obvious. When I get to about 890 MiB usage, everything goes very quickly downhill, locking up, etc. The peak I saw was 900.2 MiB. What's going on? Does this have anything to do with the system being 64-bit? Might the memory be bad?
