Ubuntu :: Upgrade BUG "Configuring Linux-image-2.6.31-21-generic" From 9.04 To 9.10

May 7, 2010

There is a bug in the upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I have repeated it three times. During the "installing the upgrades" section, the upgrade always stops or freezes in the same place. The Terminal message stops at "Configuring linux-image-2.6.31-21-generic". "update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-21-generic". I have a new DELL laptop computer that came with Ubuntu 9.04 pre-installed. I am using the Update Manager and have previously updated all files for 9.04 before clicking on upgrading to 9.10.

Antivirus-wise, all the links pointed at Clam AV (i also found a pdf describing how to clean a windows drive from linux - will try that soon - if this thread gathers followers, I'll post the results).Do you have any ideas what could i install more ? different AV ? some defragmenting tool? I searched a bit, but on all kinds of forums people just said that linux did not need defragmenting. i know that, but i want a linux tool that defragments NTFS drives.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Upgrade Needs More Space / App That Results From Sudo Apt-get Clean?

Jan 27, 2011

forgive me for raising a common problem again, but I cannot find a fix in the other threads.
I am trying to catch up on upgrades. Step 1 is to get up to 9.10 from 9.04
Doing so however I am being told I don't have enough disk space
I present have my 35-odd GB HDD partitioned:
6GB for Ubuntu
28 for Data
and 1. or so for swap

evidently I underestimated my Ubuntu partition.

what can I do now?

I have run Computer Janitor (is that the application that results from Sudo apt-get clean? I did that but couldn't figure out how to "clean"?)

I have Gparted installed but I don't see how to use the Move/Resize option.

Security :: RHEL 6 - Minimal Install Image To Be Used As Generic Node

May 3, 2011

I'm playing around with the RHEL 6 install so as to create a minimal install image to be used as a generic node for a cloud. I posted this in the security section as reducing the number of services etc seems like a security activity, i.e. reducing the running processes to minimize the attack surface.

Anyways, looking through linux from scratch etc, and the NSA hardening list I'm a bit overwhelmed. Anyone have hints on any good documentation saying what is really needed for a basic system with network/ip/arp/eb rules? The RHEL 6 minimal basic puts in a c/c++ compiler along with other things. that seems unnecessary to me for a basic minimal install.

Ubuntu :: What Does "Instead, Install The Linux-generic Meta-package" Mean?

Mar 4, 2010

Update manager popped up today and I actually had some time to look through the updates. In the recommended updates section it lists "linus-image-2.6.31-20-generic (New install)." In the description is says "You likely do not want to install this package directly. Instead, install the linux-generic meta-package, which will ensure that upgrades work correctly, and that supporting packages are also installed."

I have read 2 different threads that talk a little about this message but I am still unclear on what it is trying to tell me. What does it mean when it says to "Instead, install the linux-generic meta-package"

AND

Ubuntu :: Kernel 2.6.35-30-generic & Gnome 2.32.0?

Jun 27, 2011

Just installed the patches/upgrades for the 2.6.35.30 kernel. Ubuntu will not boot without me typing "y" and hitting enter and later hitting the enter key again. Just have a blank screen unless I do this. Discovered what to do by booting into recovery mode. Had to make a display selection. Just guess at the enter key the second time the boot process stopped. I new to Ubuntu so don't know where to look in the logs to provide additional information to help trouble shoot the problem. If some one can guide me as to where to look I'll post log info. Hope this is the right place to post this. If I need to make a bug report let me know.

Forgot to add: HP Pavalion dv5000 (dv5020us to be specific). AMD Turion64 processor. ATI Radeon Mobility 200M video.

Ubuntu :: NVidia On Mint With Kernel 2.6.32-24-generic

Sep 2, 2010

I installed Mint 9 and directly after installation there were updates to download and install, which I did. One of the updates is a newer kernel, 2.6.32-24-generic.
When I manually install the nVidia driver 256.44 and restart gdm it works. When I reboot I land in low resolution, have to remove and re-install the older (195.36) driver through "Hardware Drivers". Somehow the new kernel and the latest nVidia don't match together. Am I the only one suffering from this or are there more people with this problem, and what to do about it?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Always Boots Kernel 2.6.32.24-generic?

Jan 9, 2011

I just noticed I'm not running with the latest kernel.

This box was originally installed as Ubuntu 10.04, then upgraded to 10.10.

I just recently noticed that, even though kernel 2.6.35-24-generic is installed, this box seems to insist on booting up with 2.6.32-24-generic.

Looking at /boot/menu.lst, it looks ok. (default is 0, and first kernel in list is 2.6.35-24. 2.5.32-24 is the *last* one in the list!)
