Ubuntu :: How To Clean Windows Drive From Linux
Apr 30, 2011
i created an USB Ubuntu [10.04], that i want to keep with me. people sometimes ask me to hep them with all sorts of windows problems, and i wanted to have a usb linux, that i could load with all kind of tools/ software to help. So, i tried doing some research, into what would be most useful. Antivirus-wise, all the links pointed at Clam AV (i also found a pdf describing how to clean a windows drive from linux - will try that soon - if this thread gathers followers, I'll post the results).Do you have any ideas what could i install more ? different AV ? some defragmenting tool? I searched a bit, but on all kinds of forums people just said that linux did not need defragmenting. i know that, but i want a linux tool that defragments NTFS drives.

My laptop has had it, so I am getting a new net book instead. So with my old laptop, I am giving it to a charity who refurb them and send them overseas. Not that I do not trust them, but they say they wipe the hard drive to US Department of Defense standard 5220.22M. But I would feel a lot happier if I did it myself first, so how do I go about doing it? I have tried using wipe but as it was a tar file I got stuck trying to use the tar file.

The hardware is a psystar box with 2 drives for os x and ubuntu respectively. I attempted install of ubuntu over older version of xubunut without physically disconnecting the os x drive After install I could not boot into either system. THEN I remembered something about the install problem that 10.4 has and installed ubuntu again, this time following the instruction regarding booloader install. Now I can boot ubunut fine, but of course when I select drive holing os x it hangs on 'Verifying DMI pool data....' I've been looking at some thread on here about dual boot problems with Win7 and such, but are any of the recommended diagnostic and repair steps relevant to my case, specifically testdisk and bootinfo scripts?

My Ubuntu partition is just about out of memory, and I need to do some cleaning of the windows.I couldn't find a lot on here (maybe I wasn't using the right terms), and when I looked on google it seemed like the only results I found were from people that wanted to remove linux from windows. What I'd like to do is create a very, very small partition for windows for when I need it (burning MP3s to CDA and my printer only).I wouldn't mind re-installing windows and starting from scratch (I have all my software backed up) and then installing Ubuntu a backed up version of Ubuntu. Except I can't get Clonezilla to install for the life of me after several attempts. So is their any (hopefully easy) way to clean up windows without going to extremes?

My windows partition is infected and I recall that it is supposed to be possible from the linux partition with ClamAV. Now I'm running Fedora12 but this forum is much more active and I suppose that doesn't make a big difference. I tried to find something on google but most procedures seem to involve a Live CD but it would be more convenient for me to just do it from my linux distro running. Is there anything I have to be aware of or is it literally just scanning the windows partition with ClamAV?

I recently did a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04 and seemed to have made a mistake with re-partitioning perhaps? I cant boot into windows anymore. I know all files are still there and intacct as I can access them from Ubuntu, but Something is wrong with the Booting of Windows now. I get to a screen which gives me system recovery options. When I perform the startup repair it scans for a few secnds and comes up with an error message "...System volume on disk is corrupt. Repair action: File system repair (chkdsk)...error code 0x1f" I even seems to have access to files on windows from this screen when I try a "Windows Complete system restore" It gives me the option to look on the hard drive or on a disk (I only have a Toshiba windows 7 upgrade disk and it doesnt seem to be helping)

A couple of months ago I decided to use the wubi installer to install ubuntu on my comp in a dual boot configuration. Yesterday, I clean installed my windows drive with windows 7.I have my windows install on drive C: and my wubi install in Drive D: ( they are on completely different hard disks ), so the ubuntu virtual disks are still intact and the wubildr.mbr is still there.
The bootloader screen at startup doesn't appear at all! I tried to manually boot into the D: hard drive but come up with a error 17 grub loading error, which was because the grub loader doesn't recognize the file system on the drive (ntfs). is there a way to somehow recover the wubi installation?
EDIT: I did some research on the net, apparently if I backup up the root.disk file, erase everything else on the drive, install wubi again and overwrite the root.disk file with the backed up one I should be able to restore my previous ubuntu installation! However, I don't want try something until I'm certain that it would work.

Yes, I know, I know, there are lots of instructions out there on how to create a persistent Linux USB drive. However, I've been having a really hard time finding if it's possible to create the WHOLE thing persistent. For example, I want to turn my 8 GB thumb drive into a portable Debian Squeeze where I can install (persistent) apps and make root-level changes to the filesystem. Is this possible?

A friend loaded linux onto my eMachine netbook. Unfortunately the touch pad and WiFi refuse to work. He loaded it into a 40gb partition leaving 120gb unusable so it would probably make sense to start all over again. I only need basic txt software, pics and internet to work so I am not looking for state of the art. Just something that will work, is not too difficult to set up and preferably can be loaded from a pen drive (memory stick). Any suggestions? The "distro" as I understand it is Kubuntu. Not sure what version but I will have a look later.

I'd like to install Debian GNU/Linux on a single drive (SSD) desktop computer. The filesystem of choice is BTRFS and a couple of thing are not really clear to me:
- is a swap partition still necessary and what's the best fs for it?
- what partition scheme would be suggested?
I thought about 2 different btrfs partitions, one for /home and one for / (root) but from what I read if I'm giving the raw drive to BTRFS that would be more beneficial performance-wise, is that correct? (actually I don't even know if 2 btrfs partitions on the same drive is even possible).
If should I got for "donating" the raw/whole drive to btrfs which subvolumes scheme would be suggested for an easy management of the snapshots and backups? should /home be a subvolume or that's not really necessary.
