Ubuntu :: What Does "Instead, Install The Linux-generic Meta-package" Mean?
Mar 4, 2010
Update manager popped up today and I actually had some time to look through the updates. In the recommended updates section it lists "linus-image-2.6.31-20-generic (New install)." In the description is says "You likely do not want to install this package directly. Instead, install the linux-generic meta-package, which will ensure that upgrades work correctly, and that supporting packages are also installed."
I have read 2 different threads that talk a little about this message but I am still unclear on what it is trying to tell me. What does it mean when it says to "Instead, install the linux-generic meta-package"

I was using Lenny until now, and I liked it very much. Now I've seen that squeeze is finally released, so I decided to make a fresh install of squeeze, as I made some mistakes while installing lenny, like downloading kde meta-package (full of useless programs), small root partition etc...Now, I want to install Squeeze with KDE, but not the meta-package, just the required programs in order to run the GUI, and then I want to select which programs to install by myself... How can I do that?

Is there stability advantages to installing the mint-meta-debian package from the repo below??? I have read that LMDE is safer than running Testing because there is less chance for breakage with LMDE. Less risky overall. Is that true?
# Linux Mint Debian Edition (I get Firefox from here)
# get the mint-keyring from the repo

There is a bug in the upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I have repeated it three times. During the "installing the upgrades" section, the upgrade always stops or freezes in the same place. The Terminal message stops at "Configuring linux-image-2.6.31-21-generic". "update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-21-generic". I have a new DELL laptop computer that came with Ubuntu 9.04 pre-installed. I am using the Update Manager and have previously updated all files for 9.04 before clicking on upgrading to 9.10.

I've compiled the last stable ubuntu kernel (2.6.38-...) following this guide: How to compile a Ubuntu 10.10 kernel but in this guide doesn't explain how create linux-libc-dev package for that kernel? How do I do?
I've tried with fakeroot debian/rules binary-arch-headers but it returns an, IMHO, absurd error:
mkdir /home/simon/sources/kernel/ubuntu-natty/debian/linux-libc-dev/usr/include/
mkdir: cannot create directory `/home/simon/sources/kernel/ubuntu-natty/debian/linux-libc-dev/usr/include/': File exists
make: *** [install-arch-headers] Error 1
The error is correct but this folder is created in the same process!

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a USb drive, using the 4gb persistence option, and tried to install all available updates. The process went smoothly until it tried to update the kernel, and it just refuses to do that. I now only have 1.5gb of space left, that might possibly be causing the problem? Here's the terminal output of sudo dpkg --configure -a
Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a

If I low level formatted a drive, then created a partition table, and installed Linuxes with their bootloaders *only* on their root partitions, would the one with the bootable flag set boot?
To put it another way; does the process of creating a partition table using Linux tools put generic code in the MBR?

I switched to the generic-pae kernal image, which works great, but update now wants to update both generic and generic-pae.
How can I set it up so that it only uses generic-pae?
If I try to deselect generic in synaptic it just wants to mark it again.

I'm playing around with the RHEL 6 install so as to create a minimal install image to be used as a generic node for a cloud. I posted this in the security section as reducing the number of services etc seems like a security activity, i.e. reducing the running processes to minimize the attack surface.
Anyways, looking through linux from scratch etc, and the NSA hardening list I'm a bit overwhelmed. Anyone have hints on any good documentation saying what is really needed for a basic system with network/ip/arp/eb rules? The RHEL 6 minimal basic puts in a c/c++ compiler along with other things. that seems unnecessary to me for a basic minimal install.

So my netbook has overall very generic intel hardware Atom processor and Intel Graphic card the only component that requires a proprietary driver is the broadcom wireless card (unfortunately brcm40821 does not work for me) I am running opensuse 11.4 and I am willing to update the broadcom-wl driver each time there is a new kernel update in tumbleweed I am just wondering as of now, how stable is Tumbleweed (anyone has had any problem or success with tumbleweed, welcome to share in this post)
PS: I read (in the announcement/news section) with the new kernel (2.6.38-18), samba is finally working fine alongside apparmor.

I originally attempted to compile and install xmonad package by package, and the end result was this:
Code:
$ xmonad /home/adx/.xmonad/xmonad-x86_64-linux: executeFile: does not exist (No such file or directory)
X Error of failed request: BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied) Major opcode of failed request: 2 (X_ChangeWindowAttributes) Serial number of failed request: 7 Current serial number in output stream: 8 I figured I left out a flag on the make file or something, so I tried the slackbuild packages next; however, the same error was present at launch.

After upgrading to Natty, my Alt/Win meta key option is no longer working.
I'm using System Settings -> Keyboard -> Layouts -> Options -> Alt/Win key behavior and selecting "Meta is mapped to Win keys".
However the Win key still just pops up the files-and-folders window, and meta is not there.
This worked fine in 10.10. Need this with Emacs...

Sometimes i have on some magazines or Internet Zip packages that are the answer of what i am looking for.
Wich tool and how can i do it? c Well, i am in position to say that i had downloaded from Internet or located the package in the Cd or DVD that comes with the magazine.
But now comes the big question. How can i put this package ( install) on my distro ???
Do i have to be a normal user or should it be root or su (superuser) ?
The packages that come with the distro is easy, because i select them and everything is done
As i told before, maybe this is a silly question, but i simple don't know how to install them and i need some of them to leave MS for good.

I'm wondering if complete removal of meta-packages, that being the package itself AND all of its dependencies, is possible in one command of aptitude and/or apt-get. For instance, if I have the whole kde installed, and wish to remove that whole load and replace it with the smaller kdebase, can I do this in two commands (IE, "aptitude remove kde", and then followed by "aptitude install kdebase"). The preceding commands wouldn't work, because just removing the initial meta-package would not remove its dependent packages. BUT, I'm wondering if there is a way to remove a meta-package AND its dependent packages all in one command (rather than having to go through individually removing each one).
