I have a dual boot windows 7 and ubuntu karmic and by default whenever i turn on my system it automatically boots into ubuntu but i want windows 7 as my default boot up os, so can anybody please suggest what should i do.

I'm using dual OS (XP and Ubuntu 10.04) and i have been using ubuntu for past a year, now i have a problem when booting, that i made by mistake.
I use Windows XP only to work with Photoshop other than that i mostly use Ubuntu for everything. Recently my windows xp got crashed, so without any idea i have reinstalled windows xp but now i cann't able to find my ubuntu. i don't know what to do right now?
Am i required to reinstall ubuntu (my most of the files are in ubuntu), is there any solution without reinstall.
I find that need to change the boot.ini, but i'm not getting any proper results

I'm running Karmic with an NVIDIA GeForce 6600, normally at 1280x1024. Just during the past week, the resolution has started spontaneously changing to 1024x768, just after I type the password to login. I get the Ubuntu splash screen with the animated light thingy underneath, then the screen flickers and it goes to 1024x768. I have tried changing driver but this has no effect.
I then have to change it manually using the Nvidia X Server settings utility, which is fine. I can then save X settings into /etc/x11/xorg.conf but next startup it does exactly the same again. I have seen a lot of posts in which Ubuntu leaves users stuck in a low res, or even tries to put them into an unsupported res, but nothing quite like this. Is there a Gnome setting somewhere that defines screen res at startup??
I cannot find where i can change the startup sound for 9.10. Everywhere that i have read so far has me go to System->Preferences->Sound and there was supposed to be a tab there for logon and logout sounds. I do not have that tab in my sounds screen.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Computer, It came with Windows 7 64bit on it. I installed Ubuntu through WUBI. I used the Windows Disk Management program to resize my HDD. I shrunk the main drive and created a 20 gig free space. I installed WindowsXP on this 20g space. I had to change from AHCI to ATA. I started my new XP installation. As I should have expected my the screen that let me pick between Windows 7 and Ubuntu was gone, and it just said XP. Well thats cool. I get in XP use bcdeasy and use the install Win7 to mbr. So I restarted. Great I now I have Ubuntu and Win7... but no XP. So i think, okay, ill boot into Ubuntu, use the update grub command and XP will be there, so i do it and restart. No XP, So i try to boot into Win7 and see if i can do something in there.. No luck it says it can't boot and takes me to a startup recovery thing. Which, as Windows recovery things tend to do, doesn't find anything wrong. So I have Ubuntu now, which is great, but I do need Windows.

Is there a setting somewhere I could change to prevent the freezing at startup. We have a computer with an nvidia card with compiz enabled, and this doesn't freeze. It takes about 30 seconds for the desktop to 'fully load'. When I login I see my background, but nothing else. Then you wait 30 seconds and you see the panels appear. Is there any way to fix this lag, and make it an instant load? Cause really it should not take that long to load a panel with not really anything on it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I attempt to create a USB Live Xubuntu setup via the Startup Disk Creator, the settings for the Persistent drive are disabled/gray. When I perform the setup, no extra space is reserved for the persistant drive.
I've used the same USB drive for Live Ubuntu installations in the past and had no problems.
Does the USB Startup Disk Creator work with Xubuntu?
I'm not referring to "Gnome Login Sound" I'm referring to the login screen sound. Those 2 drum pats you hear when you start up Ubuntu, before logging in. I was using Macbuntu, and have switched back, however it never changed my login sound back to what it was suppose to be. I knew how to change everything else back, so i didn't just run a script with out knowing how to clean up after it, however this is the only thing I don't know how to do. It keeps looking into the macbuntu folder to get the sounds before i log in. Probably being able to simply set the sound theme in the login screen would fix this issue. I've tried using Ubuntu Tweak, but no such luck. If no one can't find a solution I'll just have to use the other folder from now on >.< However I'm quite certain there's a script somewhere, that I can edit. I just need to know where it's at.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an external drive mounted courtesy of an entry in fstab. The drive isn't detected at boot time until AFTER the backuppc service that will use the drive has started. I have to therefore manually stop and restart the backuppc service once booting has completed, otherwise backuppc thinks there is no drive available to it.
How can I force the mounting of my external device to occur BEFORE the backuppc service starts?

I currently have a Windows XP OS which i want to dual-boot with Ubuntu Linux 10.10 . I put the disk in the drive and chose the option to install Linux through Windows. But it hangs in the middle. I am also unable to change my BIOS settings due to which i can"t change my boot preference. My first Boot is the HDD. I want to change it to CD-ROM. Any suggestion? I also have another PC where i can boot through the CD...I tried installing there by booting from the CD but i get this error message after seeing the purple Linux screen with the loading dots. "(Process:286):Glib warning**:getpwuid:failed due to unknown user id (0)
P.S.- I am not able to see any options while the boot is going on
Before karmic while I was using Jaunty, I used to do it all the time, play my favorite sounds wherever I was them, startup, error, login, logout, etc etc... I found it in System>Preferences>Sound...
But when I do the same in Karmic, the opening dialogue box doesn't give me an option to change every sound specifically, instead, although it gives me option to choose a sound theme of my own. But for that I must first compile a theme and then install it / place it in sound themes directory etc etc.
How would I change sounds for particular events without having to compile a whole new theme (customizing the current Ubuntu sound theme)...

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to a Intel i3 cpu and Intel H55 motherboard. This was from an old P4 machine that was running Slackware 13.0. The machine is a single connection to the internet through a cable modem. I moved the hard drives over, and found that dhcpcd would not work with this board in either Slackware 13.0 or 13.1 (after updating). I tried both the Gigabit onboard Lan, an old PCI ethernet card and installing the most recent version of dhcpcd. No luck. Dhcpcd would negotiate the lease with my cable modem, assign an IP address. But after that the process stalled. The internet was unreachable, and no nameservers were printed in /etc/resolv.conf. Manually killing dhcpcd and entering: "dhclient -4 eth0" got me on the internet without a problem. As this appears to be a lingering problem with dhcpcd, I am going to try to use dhclient permanently. Has anyone else moved over to using dhclient? If you have modified your startup scripts in /etc/rc.d to use dhclient.

I loaded the dvd (one that came with Linux Format Magazine No. 139), changed BIOS to boot from dvd, and then:
I get the welcome screen with the options to boot Ubuntu, KUbuntu, XUbuntu or Boot from First Hard Disk. As I have an older laptop I was going to try XUbuntu. However, the arrow keys did not change the boot option. In fact nothing worked, Tab did not bring up a menu and Enter did not initiate boot.
I tried reloading the dvd, switching off the laptop (no way to shutdown) and restarting but always come up with the same problem.
My DVD drive works fine and the dvd appears not to be faulty since all the info is readable when it is loaded with windows running.
My system details are:

I had bought a new wifi card(rtl8185) and spent 2 days trying to make it work. I finally got it working but now I am experiencing some other problems.
First of all I get two many bootup options. Before I used to have 4 generic options(2 different kernels with each of them having their own recovery), memtest and then my win7. Now I am having those plus 4 server options and 4 preemp(no clue what this is) options. I am suspicious that this has to do with some command I ran: sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-wireless-* I got some notify at that point about broken packages. I followed the instructions given and made the messages dissapear(I don't remember excactly what I did). Then when I saw that it shows all those bootup options I tryied sudo apt-get remove linux-backports-modules-wireless-server and sudo apt-get remove linux-backports-modules-wireless-preemp but that didn't solve anything.
My second problem is that in startup now even if I choose the generic option it doesn't load the gui but just gives me the command prompt so I have to run startx each time. I am kind of a noobie in linux but would like to learn so please give me some guidance. I thought of reinstalling a fresh copy of Ubuntu-desktop but it's just too hard work. So I would be grateful if you could tip me on how fixing the problem as it is. I run Ubuntu 10.04 x64
I tried to do my parents a favor by installing Ubuntu 9.10 alongside WinXP on their PC -- same configuration I have on my desktop at home. The install went fine, but since I made a poor buying decision on purchasing a MSI motherboard in the past, Ubuntu immediately crashes after boot (other MSI board users having the same issue, no help from MSI).
The computer tries to boot Ubuntu by default unless something else is selected from the boot menu. How do I change the boot preference from default (choice 0) to WinXP? I tried manually changing this (editing the grub.cfg file), but the file said not to edit, that it's generated by something else...How do I have WinXP load by default instead of the broken Ubuntu?
I upgraded from XP to Windows 7 (I need this for legacy business) and decided to install Ubuntu permanently rather than using from CD. During an Ubuntu session I was prompted to upgrade, which I did, but when I boot up now, there seems to be 2 versions of Ubuntu which I can choose from the boot up menu, plus the usual mem test, safe mode etc, plus the option to boot Windows 7.
Firstly, is there in fact more than one Ubuntu image (and therefore precious disk space taken up), how do I find out, and if so what action should I take?If there is only one Ubuntu and one Windows 7 image, how do I edit (and where is the file) to change the boot order and the various boot selections?
My comp came with Vista and then I installed Ubuntu, so it's dual boot. When I start up the computer, it eventually opens a screen with the options to boot Ubuntu, Vista and 3 other partitions. Ubuntu is at the top, Vista at the bottom, and it gives you five seconds to pick an OS or it automatically starts Ubuntu. This is very annoying because I almost always need Vista and I have a habit of pressing power and walking away and letting the computer load. Is there a way to have Vista be the default selection?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just moved to rackspacecloud and created a Ubuntu 9.10 server. Moved everything over all fine (7-10 wordpress sites). Now I have a couple rails apps that need to move over and run on postgresql 8.4.
I installed postgresql via sudo apt-get as per usual. Usually at this point the postgresql server starts up and I can forget about it. But no luck. I booted it by running /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 start. When I run that command it boots fine, I can connect via psql no trouble.
I rebooted the machine to see what happened. After boot, apache and mysql started just fine, wp sites came up nicely no trouble. postgresql wouldn't start up.
I have tried installing from source, I have tried using different /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 scripts. I have no idea what to do.
I have downgraded to upstart to 0.6.3-10. I have apt-get updated, upgraded. I have Googled. I have pushed and pulled.
Usually with any linux issue in the past I have been able to find a solution on the net or work it out myself. This one stumps me to no end.
The other irritating part is that while I wait to work out this issue I am still paying for my old server running my Rails apps.
