Ubuntu :: Change Netbook To "Normal" OS
Sep 28, 2010
I have Ubuntu Netbook on my laptop. I was wondering if there is a possibility of changing it (whenever you wanted or whatever) to basic Ubuntu Desktop Environment. I remember I have disabled Netbook Launcher from the startup application list, but I didn't have a proper Ubuntu desktop, as I couldn't edit it, couldn't (or I couldn't) place any icons there.

I have recently installed Netbook Remix 10.04 on my MSi Wind u100, and so it dual-boots XP, as well as Netbook Remix. I'm not a huge fan of netbook remix, and I find it really doesn't add a whole lot to my netbook experience. I was quite surprised when setting up evolution and empathy to find a number of the windows didn't fit on my 1024x600 screen. As such I would like to put normal Ubuntu 10.04 onto my netbook. What would be the easiest way to do it? Should I just install it from a LiveCD, or is there a better way?

I tried installing the Netbook Remix, but it ran horribly (I don't know why either, system monitor was saying both my cores were 90+%, but no processes were using over 10%. I have an E2160 dual core pentium @ 1.8Ghz each, and an 8600GT and everything else works fine with a normal installation. Anyway, does anyone know what packages that can create the sleek menus from the netbook remix on a desktop?

I was using GDE in my ubuntu system. But yesterday i did some thing so my ubuntu system has changed as debian. My login screen changed and i cant access "system->administration->Login window"
when i do this i am getting this error message
"GDM (GNOME Display Manager) is not running.
You might be using a different display manager, such as KDM (KDE Display Manager), CDE login (dtlogin), or xdm. If you wish to use this feature, then your system will need to be configured to use GDM instead."
How to come back to my normal original ubuntu with GNOME.

I'm trying to change the restrictions to some normal text files and their result is not what is expected.
For example, when I put:
chmod 000 testfile.txt
on a file that is
-rwxrwxrwx,
it instead becomes
-r--r--r--.
It doesn't matter whether I do it with a root or the owner of the file, the result is the same.
Also, putting
chmod u-rwx testfile
results in the file becoming, again,
-r--r--r--.
Also, some doesn't have any effect, such as
chmod o-r testfile.
Even if I do this, the result is the same -rwxrwxrwx.

how I managed this, but somehow during a reinstall I changed the ownership of all my home stuff to root, instead of my normal username. So now nothing loads, unless I sudo it. I had to use sudo just to open firefox.

I installed USB Startup Disk Creator to a USB Flash Drive from a live 9.10 CD. It booted up OK and of course I ended up with 9.10 on my Netbook. I really want to try the UNR version as a better fit to the 10-inch display. What is the easiest way to switch my Netbook from 9.10 to 9.10 UNR? I sure need a simple and clear approach.

I bought a Asus eeepc a few days ago which I really like, with the exception of one thing - windows 7 starter. I like Windows 7, but starter is just bad. I also really like ubuntu, so I've decided to put it on my netbook. I download the netbook edition from the site, put it on a usb drive, and than tested it out - well, my screen is dim, very dim. Changing the brightness setting on the tool bar up top doesn't change anything, and using the function keys does change it, but still keeps it very dim.
I've tried restarting my computer, same thing, I've tried messing around with settings in the battery options, nothing... I really don't want to install it if its going to be this dark, I can see things, but its not very pleasant to use. I'm starting to consider that its the problem with the file I downloaded. Theres nothing wrong with my netbook, everything worked perfectly fine in Windows 7. I use the full version of ubuntu 10.04 on my other laptop which works perfectly fine, I'm not sure why this version is acting so weird on my netbook.

I just downloaded Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04 and am running it from a usb flash drive on my Acer laptop.
At times I'd like to use the Gnome desktop. I know with the previous version there was a way to change to Gnome. Is there still a way to change to Gnome on the 10.04 version and if so how do I change to Gnome and back to Netbook Edition desktop?

I just installed Slackware 13.1 on my Acer a0531h. My first problem is the size of letters on pure console. It's too small. I tried tweaking lilo but even using 'normal' doesn't change the size of letters. I haven't changed the default font (I think it's called default8x16). The text looks pretty sharp though, so I'm wondering whether this is its native resolution. The text during installation was huge, and quite blurry. I just want to have a text size I can easily read and if possible be sharp. I know I can start X and have whatever font family and size I want, but somehow I feel better using pure console. Just in case it matters, I want to say that eventually I want to have UTF8 support on the command line (so that I can read and write Greek).

I am having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix edition onto a Acer Aspire one netbook. I am attempting to install the OS from a 16GB PNY usb drive w/ the usb-universal installer and ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix .ISO
The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.

Why i cant change from 800x480 to 1024x600, that this model of EEE pc doesnt support anything higher than 800x480 at the 10:1 ratio...
Firstly my question is, is it ACTUALLY possible to 'overclock' this type of netbook to run a higher res?
Im running ubtuntu netbook remix 10.04 and am new to linux (again, so sorry) so be nice, and ive tried getting my head around this 'sudo' stuff, and the xorg.conf file (which is nowhere to be found) and ive even tried a program calld astray but im pretty sure ive exhausted my patience as trying to self-teach . . .
And ive also tried to much around with xrandr or whatever that command was.. but i cant really get my head around it, and it kept telling me the resolution didnt exist ect...

For the past 2hrs I have been struggling to make KDE launch plasma-dekstop instead of plasma-netbook, but all in vain.I removed, then purged plasma-netbook and plasma-netbook-default-settings packages but after logging out and re-logging in the Netbook UI was back! After restarting the system now I can't even seem to get the KDM. I am greeted with a black screen.--- I restarted the system again and the nasty little bugger is back again! This is so frustrating. How do I get plasma-desktop to load instead?---- Great now I can see that plasma-desktop and plasma-netbook both are running simultaneously! netbook on top of desktop. So my final Q is how do I stop plasma-netbook from loading?

I installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 and immediately noticed the keyboard of my eeepc 1000HE was abnormally warm. Since I dual boot XP I booted to XP and found the fan running faster to compensate for the previous heat. This did not happen on Ubuntu-the fan just was barely running. I had to place the side of the netbook in order to feel the fan running. I issued "sensors" in terminal and it showed 67 degrees C for the cpu temp. Is the latest Ubuntu such a resource hug that it heats up the CPU?

Im a new linux user and so far im loving it, problem is i just tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix onto my Compaq mini 311 (via usb) and at first i couldnt even install from the flash stick...finally managed to by formatting the flash with an HP tool and then creating the bootable Live OS with "Linux Live USB creator 2.6."
I selected to use the whole Hard disk to install (the hard disk was empty anyway as i recently formated the drive which had windows 7 on it)
The the installation completed successfully but the problem is that after rebooting the OS wouldnt boot, leaving me with a flashing cursor or _ on the top left of the screen...
I have tried everything i could think of, using different Usb creators, formatting the hard drive before re-installing but for some reason im still left with the same blinking cursor after every install.
I have just installed the regular version of ubuntu 9.04 which works perfectly after installing but id much rather use the netbook version of 10.04
(I assume the issue has something to do with the bootloader but im completely new to the topic so cant really troubleshoot)

After installing some updates to ubuntu 9.10 my laptop will no longer let me boot into the normal OS environment. It takes me to the GNU GRUB version 1.97~beta4 command prompt. I think I am supposed to execute the following commands in order to get it to boot normally:
set root=(hdX,Y)
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic root=/dev/sdXY ro
intrid /boot/intrid.img-2.6.31-14generic
boot
To find the correct partition I entered 'ls' and it gave me back:
(loop0) (hd0) (hd0,4) (hd0,3) (hd0,2) (hd0,1)
if I can only find the boot files in the (loop0) how do I go about setting this up so I can boot into my OS as it normally should?
