Nov 20, 2010I just upgraded my Ubuntu install from 10.04 to 10.10, seems pretty decent so far in fact my old netbook seems a little snappier, could all be in the mind.
I'm running on a 1000h eeepc which has a lowly 1024x600 resolution, one of the reasons I liked Ubuntus netbook remix was due to the lack of clutter allowing me to make the most of my machines poor resources, this new launcher is a complete waste of valuable screen real estate, wouldn't be bad if it auto hid, or something but it just sits there being buggerall use most of the time.
Is there a way to configure it to be unobtrusive.

Aug 31, 2010I'm trying to create a desktop launcher for yWriter 5, which works through Mono. The only way I can launch it now is to open the terminal and enter cd ~/yWriter5/bin/ then mono yWriter5.exe. I can't seem to figure out how to create a desktop shortcut. When I try to create a launcher with the command mono yWriter5.exe, it does nothing. I also tried opening yWriter with Wine but that doesn't work either.

May 18, 2011I have natty 11.4 and love it but last night I played with some of the Compiz window settings and its messed things up. Now when I log into that account the icon launcher bar at the side is missing and the resolution seems to be missed up or at least the bookmars/system etc options at top left are missing. So I can't access terminal, systerm options, monitors or my files or web browser. Is there a way to get into applications without having the side bar or any desktop icons? Also how can I disable/cahnge compiz or recover my desktop so to speak. It all works apart from that, can open anything on my desktop

Apr 5, 2011I just had my pc updated with the latest Ubuntu 11.04.. but since im very curious with the new appearance (which i think really nice and neat), i started to configure Compiz and opened the 'compiz configuration setting manager'.
since i thought it was OK, i just changed the desktop configuration to 'Desktop cube' just like on my previous Ubuntu (10.10).. and i just clicked to change to desktop cube whatever popped there to confirm it.
but later i found i can't open any programs anymore, just plain wallpaper on my 'desktop'.

Ubuntu :: Can't Enable Normal Or Extra Desktop Effects
Aug 16, 2010I have Lucid lynx on my laptop, its been working perfectly for months. Recently been trying to get flash videos on sites to play and came across a 'fix' that said to disable desktop effects, which I did.
That didn't work and afterward found out that adobe flash 10 don't work on 64-bit linux, which is what I have. Tried to re-enable desktop effects to normal but got "cannot load desktop effects" popup.
I've removed nvidia driver, reinstall it, tried to enable desktop effects, didn't work. Ran nvidia-settings which said to run as root nvidia-xconfig and restart X(alt-printscr-k), which I did, it didn't work. I just want my desktop effects back, I had it on extra.
Edit: Forgot to mention that at boot, after grub menu nothing shows. No login screen. I have to add "nomodeset" by pressing e at boot menu and typing it to the boot options to get a dialog to choose restart x which then shows the login screen.
Update: I've been searching all over, tried to install by downloading from nvidia site, didn't work, been rebooting like crazy after every try. Installed a bunch of nvidia files from software center and got hardware drivers to have nvidia current. The driver is activated and in use. However I still can't enable desktop effects and ubuntu doesn't boot normally. After the grub menu it shows the logo for a second then blank screen. I have to boot with nomodeset and choose to restart x or start in low graphics mode.
Please help me fix this.

It seems if I scroll through it I can have it scroll down to use more applications.What I'd like to do is either make the application icons smaller so that they can all fit on the screen without me having to scroll or either make it wider so that there can be two vertical rows of application icons.Are there any options to do this or make any other changes to the application launcher?

Nov 17, 2010I've bought Samsung n210 netbook, took it home, immediately removed Windows and installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix. Now, everything went pretty well, but I have a problem. Not sure if I'm just mistaken in my expectations or it's a real problem, but I can't use my desktop. I see the launch bar to the left, and everything in it works fine, but just to mention, it does not have Favorites and such, as I could see on some user guides, but only a thin launch bar with apps in it.
Right clicking on my desktop, pasting something, selecting... Nothing seems to work. Is there any problem with my install or what?

Mar 26, 2010I am having trouble creating a desktop launcher icon for an application that needs to run in terminal mode and is run with "mono". After creating the launcher on the desktop it launches the terminal window and then gives the error "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal", and the terminal window is blank. Here are the steps I use to launch the application in a many step process. click on applications/system tools/terminal then in the terminal window I type, cd /var/opensim/Test/bin mono OpenSim.32BitLaunch.exe The above steps work just fine and the instance of the application runs just fine, but it is rather tedious to enter in all that everytime I want to run the application.
1 - place a desktop icon on my desktop to launch the application,
2 - Launch this application when I reboot Fedora so it starts automatically whenever I boot.
The way I created the desktop launcher was to right click on the desktop and select create launcher. I selected "application in terminal" and when I entered in the command line, I added "mono" to the command after navigating to the place the application was with the correct path. Here is the actual command line that is in the launcher that throws the error message.
/var/opensim/Test/bin/mono OpenSim.32BitLaunch.exe

Apr 29, 2011I automount two NTFS volumes on login. These display in both the desktop and the Unity launcher.
The first time I clicked one of them in the Unity launcher, it asked if I wanted to use Nautilus or Thunar. I chose Thunar.
Now, when I open the volumes in the Unity launcher, it always uses Thunar. When I open the volumes on my desktop, it always uses Nautilus.
Is there any way to standardize these, so that I use either Thunar or Nautilus, but not both? And how do I switch back and forth? Where can I reset the Unity launcher to use Nautilus again?
