I just upgraded to the new Ubuntu distribution. My GRUB looks the same and has an entry for WIndows7, however when I chose this option I just get a blank screen and it doesn't load Windows.

I just did an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and now I can't boot into Windows 7 on this dual boot desktop. I usually do a clean install but with a laptop and desktop a copy of Windows 7 and Ubuntu on each machine it's getting very tiring with 4 os's so opted for the upgrade this time.
During the installation there was a window that game up about upgrading grub and what devices to install it on. The help box was not very complete and seemed to say to click all the check boxes which included the main drive and it's partitions including windows. During the install somewhere it said something like grub could not be installed on one of the devices which I think was sda6 which is probably the Windows 7 partition.
So how would I get the option of booting into Windows 7 on startup as now I only get a blank black screen when I click on the Windows 7 option upon bootup? I hope I don't have to reinstall one or both os's again from scratch as this is becoming to much work to do on two systems every 6 months, especially with the amount of programs I have installed.
All this started when I decided to upgrade Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. Now Windows XP gives me a blank screen and doesnt run. I have tried a bunch of things but didnt help. I also clean installed Ubuntu 9.10 into a new partition and removed the deleted the other partition.

1. Windows XP on sda1 wont start from grub2 (version 1.97-beta4).
2. I can access the windows partition from Linux and see all the files.
3. When I boot using windows cd, and go to recovery mode it doesnt list Windows XP.
4. From windows Recovery mode when I try "diskpart" it says no partitions in c drive.
Im new to linux and everything and have never done a dualboot before but i have instaled ubuntu 10.10 (going to update to 11.04) and everything went as planed and i partioned the hard drive equally on the live cd installer. but now when i go run windows xp pro from the GRUB menu it boots with the xp loading bar for about 3 seconds the goes onto the windows bluescreen. Ive tried this about 5 times.

I want: dual boot up choosing between ubuntu and Windows 7 at start-up, "my files" (presumably equivalent to ~/home) to be available to both windows and ubuntu and to be "separate" for no "second guessing" back-up AND no problem ubuntu (and windows I suppose) upgrades.
My hard drive apparently has errors, according to my Windows 7 installation. ._. So I am going to restore to factory settings. First question - Will factory setting make me lose my Anytime Upgrade? If so, is the key that was in the anytime upgrade box re-useable? Second Question - Under the chance that I have data loss once setting up my Ubuntu-Windows 7 Dual boot system, will I lose my anytime upgrade, and is it re-usable?

When my computer starts up it shows a screen that says press any button to select another operating system to start, then I can make Windows 7 start. But after 2 seconds, if I DON'T press any button then Fedora starts automatically. How can I change this so Windows starts automatically when I don't press any button?
View 4 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I went to perform the Service Pack 1 Upgrade for Win 7. This crashed out with an error. On researching the problem I found a solution to fix the problem by marking the Windows partition as active. I did this (via Computer Mgmt -> Disk Mgmt). This allowed the SP1 upgrade to work, however on reboot I got an error BOOTMGR missing. This I rather rashly resolved by using the Windows 7 install DVD in Recovery mode to reinstall the Windows Boot manager via bootrec /Fixboot I thought I would then be able to use the Opensuse 11.2 install disk to fix grub.
I use the Opensuse install disk and select Repair system -> Expert Mode -> Install New Boot Loader then select Other -> Reread Configuration from Disk. This adds Win 7 back into the grub menu. I then select OK and get the message "the bootloader was installed successfully". The problem then comes when I click my way through OK and Next to finish the install. At the end of the process I get the message "An error occurred during the installation" and I'm no further forward.
FYI the PC has a single SATA disk installed partitioned as follows:
dev/sda1 100Mb Win System Parkition
dev/sda2 Windows NTFS
dev/sda3 Windows FAT
I've installed Ubuntu on my new desktop alongside Windows 7 (each OS is on a separate drive), I seem to have run into a small problem. Let me start with what I did:
- Unplugged 1TB drive from the PSU, BIOS was not seeing my formatted (and thus empty) 500GB drive and I couldn't put it into the boot order at all with the 1TB turned on.
- Loaded up the boot CD and was able to install Ubuntu 10.1 on my 500GB drive.
- Did a bit of configuring, shut my PC off and plugged my 1TB (with Windows 7) drive back in. I tried to see if I could now see my Ubuntu drive in BIOS but nothing is there - just the Windows drive is in the list of available drives to boot from (along with DVD-ROM and USB).
This is where I've run into my problem. What I want is to have a nice GRUB boot menu at the start like any other dual-boot system but just have the two operating systems on separate drives altogether.I did it this way because I was having issues with the advanced partition menu on the boot CD so just went ahead and followed the KISS method by unplugging the Windows drive.
I was told by a friend that if I put my Ubuntu drive into the first position in my boot order and the Windows drive in the second, then I could boot into Ubuntu and run a GRUB update command (he told me to google it) and that would create the necessary GRUB that had the entries for Windows 7 and Ubuntu.Both operating systems are 64-bit, I imagine that might make a difference in whatever help you guys can offer me. I love the hell out of both OS's and want to be able to use them interchangeably.

Right, so I've looked high and low for the answer to this problem and haven't found it, although I've found a million and a half threads about grub especially when it comes to dual booting windows. Which I'm not. What I am though, I suspect, is an idiot who shouldn't mess around with my computer at 4 am.
So the problem is every time I turn on my pc, grub tells me it can't find a file system and goes into recovery mode. Can't boot into ubuntu at all. Am using the live disk to type this.
I also think I know why grub is doing this, I was dual booting windows before, I had windows installed originally, added ubuntu to a new partition. Was having problems with grub. Figured that reinstalling it wouldn't be a bad idea, it might fix it. In that process I did something rather stupid, I accidentally installed grub to my other internal hard drive. There is no operating system on it. Just movies, music, etc. The problem, I think, is that my second hard drive is sda, and the one with my os is sdb, which I suspect means that grub is loading from sda and finding no operating system, rather than from sdb. (It's like that because my larger drive wouldn't fit into the sda slot on my computer, long story.) How do I remove grub from sda?
I installed Ubuntu on my netbook alonside xp. The only problem is that when I start my computer, the boot menu only pops up for a split second and I cannot select "run windows xp". This is preventing me from usintg both OS'.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently moved and didnt have internet. Out of a fit of boredom i decided to get me Ubuntu 10.10 disk and dual boot. My laptop has a SD slot in the front of it that has never been used so i decided that itd be cool to have ubuntu on an SD card that i could boot any time. I used the default installer to install it onto the SD card instead of using the Universal USB Installer (i imagine this is where i went wrong). It installed and everything works fine and when i boot up it lets me choose between Linux and Windows when the SD card is inserted. When it is not i get this screen http://imgur.com/gg63v. The only really problem is me worrying that the sd card will be lossed or get broke and i will no longer be able to access Windows. Is there anyway i can set the windows boot loader back t the default bootloader (i think this is what need to be done i may be completely wrong>

Made a persistent 10.10 usb to try out une - loved it, great job. Decided to install it together with the Windows7 already on my laptop. Did the standard installation - went well. Restarted without the persistent usb. And what starts up - Windows7. I was expecting the old menu (ala 9.10) which allowed me to choose whether I start W7 or Ubuntu. So can somebody please tell me how I get Ubuntu to start from disc and how I get to choose which os starts up. Surely Canonical's preference is not that I use W7?

I have a netbook running Windows XP as standard. There is also a recovery partition which came from the factory.
In the past I installed Ubuntu (I think 9.something) from USB key and all worked fine. However my XP became corrupted and I needed to do a repair on it. After this, Ubuntu became removed from the boot select menu.
Since then, Ubuntu has become updated to 10.04, which I now cannot install.
The Live CD tells me there is a "file IO error" and simply stops installation at around 70%.
I did manage to get into Ubuntu from a Live USB using Wubi. However when I chose to install Ubuntu to a Harddrive, the option to "install side by side" was missing.
After reading on the forums, I did a chkdsk /f on Windows and tried again. Now my liveUSB does not show a boot menu!
When I select to boot from USB stick, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. Ctrl+alt+dlt reboots.
I'm really lost here! It seems when I fix one problem, another problem arises!
Also when trying to instal Ubuntu within Windows, the process goes through to 100% and asks me to reboot. When I do so, the option for Ubuntu does show in the boot menu. However when I select it, I get an error "Windows boot failed: file wubildr.mbr and status: 0xc00000f - something is corrupt".

I'm trying to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu WITHOUT using Grub. This is to support Bitlocker encryption.
I followed this guide, and now when I select Ubuntu I get a Grub> prompt and no ubuntu.
I feel like I'm halfway there, I just need to get Grub to load correctly or something.

I originally installed windows XP on a 100gb hard drive, from there i downloaded and burnt ubuntu off so i could install it on my 200gb hard drive. For a little bit i struggled to even get it to install because it wouldn't recognize my onboard nvidia graphics, i ended up having to get an alt boot disk and fix it with technique in this link:

Now after the bios boot, my screen shuts off for awhile and takes me directly to the login screen for ubuntu. No Grub, no windows boot options, nothing. I tried booting windows by choosing it from the bios boot menu but all it does is hang at prompt and doesn't boot at all. I tried the live cd fix and reinstalled grub but nothing changed. What i think is happening is that it boots the Grub menu but it doesn't display it because of graphical confrontations. It hangs for about 10 seconds, the grub default time, and then turns my monitor back on to display the Ubuntu login screen.
it started with rooting my Motorola Droid. I got quite interested in the whole rooting/linux "world". The only problem is, my hands move A LOT faster than my brain does. I'm an "educated novice" at best when it comes to all of this and still learning slowly, but surely. I've got a win7/ubuntu 10.04 dual boot running on my system. I did the usual of installing 7 first, then ubuntu and using it as the default boot option. I now want to get rid of win 7 and expand the ubuntu installation into the free space. My current hdd structure is in the attachment. If I just boot a live cd and gparted to remove the win 7 partitions and expand the ubuntu installation into the free space, will that work or will it have a massive panic? how to I get grub to silently boot after without offering me any boot options?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a Compaq Presario V3000.
To prepare the install, I freed about 15 GB of space, booted from an USB. I chose "use largest continous free space" when it got to that point and then proceeded with the rest.
Now when I choose vista it will not load properly, here's what happens:
1.Windows says loading windows files.
2.After a while, I have to choose a language.
3.Windows looks for operating systems to repair.
If I choose not to, it will take me to a menu where I can choose to fix boot problems, command line, etc...
Linux is running very well, vista is the problem here, I have a recovery disk*, but I wanted to ask you guys if that is the correct move. I really need to keep windows to run some windows only apps.
*This disk was burnt on another computer, an HP from a friend who has the same vista edition. Will this work? This computer's burner is broken..
This is actually something for my gf, she has an account on my computer(only ubuntu on it) and uses it often (Mendley, Zotero, and sciency things in general). She loved it and asked me to install a dual boot with her win system. She use SPSS for whatever kind of statistical analysis it does and she likes ms office better then open office, and I would like to leave her with the choice....
