Ubuntu :: Cannot Hibernate After Adding More RAM To Netbook?
Jun 19, 2011
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) and I recently upgraded the amount of memory in my Acer Aspire One A110 netbook from the default of 512M to 1.5G. I don't use this netbook very often and only today after I was done with it did I try to put it into hibernation rather than shutting it down and discovered that the option was no longer there.
I googled for a bit and then realised that I didn't have a swap partition. I don't know if I ever had one or whether I was using a swap file, but I followed this guide to create a swap partition, which I can now see. I also followed the bit of the guide that talks about making the swap partition work for hibernate, but although I can now see "hibernate" in my power menu, if I select it, the disk thrashes for a bit but nothing happens.I've tried running
Code:
sudo /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh
from the command line in case it gave me any error message, but it doesn't, and neither
[code]....

My netbook does not hibernate when lid is closed. Sometimes it does but usually not. At first I was thinking it was getting confused after recharging, thinking it was still in AC mode. I suppose it could be some process running in the background but don't know how to identify which one would cause that. If that were the case, would I be able to manually go to Hibernate?
I've checked my preferences and "On Battery Power" "When Lid is closed" is set to Hibernate.
I have an ASUS 1000. I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 9.1 karmic.

Basically in the files and folders section on the netbook edition desktop i would like to add another folder (my dropbox folder)
I think i read somewhere that you had to bookmark it or something but i dont know how to do that.
I suppose its the same as adding a folder to the files and folder menu on any normal distribution of ubuntu.

Just got Ubuntu 9.10 and I'm liking it a lot, but my computer refuses to go into hibernate or suspend. I have a Dell M1530 but I don't really think it's a dell hardware issue because it's not just when I close the screen, it's also when I click suspend or hibernate from the menu.

I am having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix edition onto a Acer Aspire one netbook. I am attempting to install the OS from a 16GB PNY usb drive w/ the usb-universal installer and ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix .ISO
The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.

Why i cant change from 800x480 to 1024x600, that this model of EEE pc doesnt support anything higher than 800x480 at the 10:1 ratio...
Firstly my question is, is it ACTUALLY possible to 'overclock' this type of netbook to run a higher res?
Im running ubtuntu netbook remix 10.04 and am new to linux (again, so sorry) so be nice, and ive tried getting my head around this 'sudo' stuff, and the xorg.conf file (which is nowhere to be found) and ive even tried a program calld astray but im pretty sure ive exhausted my patience as trying to self-teach . . .
And ive also tried to much around with xrandr or whatever that command was.. but i cant really get my head around it, and it kept telling me the resolution didnt exist ect...

For the past 2hrs I have been struggling to make KDE launch plasma-dekstop instead of plasma-netbook, but all in vain.I removed, then purged plasma-netbook and plasma-netbook-default-settings packages but after logging out and re-logging in the Netbook UI was back! After restarting the system now I can't even seem to get the KDM. I am greeted with a black screen.--- I restarted the system again and the nasty little bugger is back again! This is so frustrating. How do I get plasma-desktop to load instead?---- Great now I can see that plasma-desktop and plasma-netbook both are running simultaneously! netbook on top of desktop. So my final Q is how do I stop plasma-netbook from loading?

I installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 and immediately noticed the keyboard of my eeepc 1000HE was abnormally warm. Since I dual boot XP I booted to XP and found the fan running faster to compensate for the previous heat. This did not happen on Ubuntu-the fan just was barely running. I had to place the side of the netbook in order to feel the fan running. I issued "sensors" in terminal and it showed 67 degrees C for the cpu temp. Is the latest Ubuntu such a resource hug that it heats up the CPU?

Im a new linux user and so far im loving it, problem is i just tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix onto my Compaq mini 311 (via usb) and at first i couldnt even install from the flash stick...finally managed to by formatting the flash with an HP tool and then creating the bootable Live OS with "Linux Live USB creator 2.6."
I selected to use the whole Hard disk to install (the hard disk was empty anyway as i recently formated the drive which had windows 7 on it)
The the installation completed successfully but the problem is that after rebooting the OS wouldnt boot, leaving me with a flashing cursor or _ on the top left of the screen...
I have tried everything i could think of, using different Usb creators, formatting the hard drive before re-installing but for some reason im still left with the same blinking cursor after every install.
I have just installed the regular version of ubuntu 9.04 which works perfectly after installing but id much rather use the netbook version of 10.04
(I assume the issue has something to do with the bootloader but im completely new to the topic so cant really troubleshoot)

I have been running Ubuntu 9.04 on my netbook for quite some time.
Everything was fine hibernation and suspend both worked.
I changed out one of the hard drives (SSD) that contained my swap partition for a bigger one.
I recreated the swap partition to twice the amount of RAM
I finally got around to figuring out how to reactivate the swap file and using free it shows up.
When I set it to hibernate and close the lid I can tell by the hdd LED that it is hibernating then powers down.
But when I restart the system just boots normally instead of coming out of hibernation.

I found this line in dmseg when I was checking out another problem.
"[0.104467] ACPI Warning: Incorrect checksum in table [OEMB] - 03, should be FA 20090521 tbutils-246"
Could this be why I have never been able to resume from hibernate on this machine?

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. When I partitioned my HDD, I ran out of available partitions and so couldn't make a Swap Partition.I pushed on anyway, because I read here that you can create a Swap File instead of a partition that does the same thing. I've made the Swap File and it's activated (I know because during shutdown there's a message that flashes very quickly that says "Deactivating Swap [OK]".
But here's the real problem. My Ubuntu refuses to Suspend or Hibernate. The screen just goes black and the backlight stays on. Since one of the main functions of the swap file is to facilitate Suspend and Hibernate,I upgraded from 9.10 Karmic Koala, which suspended and hibernated normally.

I have ubuntu 10.04 installed on a 50 gb partition on my hard drive I have given a 3.5 gb partition for swap which is > 3gb ram i have. Druing the installation of ubuntu I had specified the swap partition and its hibernate was working fine sometimes before. But I had to delete the swap partition and recreate it because of some reasons so I did that and again created a 3.5 gb partition for swap space usig ubuntu live cd.
But after restart ubuntu no longer detected the swap partition it was ok as its uuid had changed so I specified the swap partition to be mounted automatically by adding an entry in /etc/fstab and then also added the same UUID in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume so that it could resume. After restarting ubuntu after adding the entrly in /etc/fstab i got the option of hibernate but after hibernate everything goes well but after hibernate when i start laptop again ubuntu first tries to resume but it does not and without giving any message it shows the login screen.

I'm using Xubuntu 10.10 on a Toshiba laptop. Since I upgraded to Maverick, I noticed that the gdm login screen does no longer offer the option to hibernate my computer . The bottom right button can be used to "stop, "restart" or "suspend" but no "hibernate" option. I looked at the option the gconf-editor can toggle for simple-greeter, but no mention of "hibernate" option anywhere. Do you have the same issues on your laptop? How to make that "hibernate" option reappear ?

What am I missing ? I can't get my computer to hibernate. Each time I click on hibernate it begins to do so then just as quickly comes back into run mode. I tried various options from ideas presented in Ubuntu forums but always I get the message "not enough free swap" despite the fact that I've allocated 2Gb for a swap partition. FYI .. I have 512 Mb of ram.Can anyone help or is this problem unsolvable ?

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and recently installed Virtualbox PUEL edition that I downloaded from the Virtual box website. So I installed a virtual windows XP and it works fine. However, when the virtual XP is running, my computer can't go to hibernate when I click the hibernate button. The screen just turns black for several seconds and then brings me back to the login screen. When I shut down the virtual xp, the computer can go to hibernate the normal way.Why is it that running the virtual machine prevents my pc from hibernating? Is there a setting to enable hibernation while the virtual machine is running?

I have recently installed OpenSuse with GRUB boot-loader on my Vaio FW series laptop. I had to uninstall it because it caused Windows 7 to be unable to hibernate. I installed other distros (Fedora 11 and others) and the same problem recurred. This lead me to the conclusion that the problem is with the boot-loader (as my research suggested)..It has been months now, and I have not found any proper solutions to this yet. Linking this to Ubuntu, I recently downloaded and burned Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, however, I am still reluctant to install it until I know a solution is available. Has anyone had Linux-Windows 7 dualboot and also faced problems with hibernation/stand-by?
