Ubuntu :: No Option To Hibernate From Gdm?

Dec 2, 2010

I'm using Xubuntu 10.10 on a Toshiba laptop. Since I upgraded to Maverick, I noticed that the gdm login screen does no longer offer the option to hibernate my computer . The bottom right button can be used to "stop, "restart" or "suspend" but no "hibernate" option. I looked at the option the gconf-editor can toggle for simple-greeter, but no mention of "hibernate" option anywhere. Do you have the same issues on your laptop? How to make that "hibernate" option reappear ?

Ubuntu :: Add Option To Allow Hibernate And Suspend When Loged Out

Sep 7, 2010

The other day somebody sat next to me whom I don't feel like entering in my password around, and I wanted to take my computer elsewhere. If I put my computer in my backpack while it's running, my computer will get hot, and the batteries will drain. So I'd like to put my computer in hibernate, or suspend mode, but my computer was already locked, and I couldn't hibernate or suspend without logging in, but I didn't want to enter my password around this guy so I could hibernate or suspend, so I was stuck.

I know there are reasons to keep things the way they are, (like maybe a server environment, etc...) and maybe it should default the way it is now, but I'd like the option to add the ability to hibernate and/or suspend when logged out, at the log in screen and/or a locked screen, without having to use a password.

Ubuntu :: Way To Totally Turn Off Hibernate Option In 11.04

May 1, 2011

I was looking for a way to totally turn off the Hibernate option in 11.04, and not just remove the option from the menu. I have read that you can easily disable hibernate from System>Preferences>Power Management but as far as i can see I have no options in there to do such.I found this and similar pages: URL... I do not have the key named can_hibernate anywhere under my gnome-power-manager.I read that this is the option that only removes the "hibernate" option from the power menu, but actually does not disable the service, can anyone confirm this?URL...

Just curious but disabling hibernate in linux save you hardisk space like it does in windows (still quite new here)?

Ubuntu :: Hibernate Option Disappears From Power Down Menu

Mar 9, 2011

I increasingly use Ubuntu so swapped SATA ports 1&2 around so now 7 boots from BIOS F11 pop out menu. Windows did not complain so far but hibernate is missing from Ubuntu's power down options. I installed Ubuntu Tweak, but cannot see an option to re-enable. Is this something to do with the swapped HDDs &/or the swap partition? Or more likely a recent update?

I have installed Fedora 15 Alpha with GNOME 3. Everything is working fine. However, I can't see any option to hibernate or shutdown.

In the top panel when I click my user name, I only have one option and that is to suspend. Normally I like to hibernate or shutdown. And I can't see any option of what to do when I close my netbook. Normally, I prefer to hibernate.

Ubuntu :: No Option To Hibernate / "sudo Shutdown Now" Causes Crash

Apr 25, 2011

Gigabyte P55-USB3 mobo,
ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series graphics card,
8 GB ram

Ubuntu installed after Win7. Dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu 10.04, shared NFTS partition for Downloads and Documents, Grub setup to load Ubuntu by default. I can use the option to hibernate in Windows (but it is disabled by default). I would very much like to enable the "Hibernate" function on this machine, but there is no option for it in the menus. "sudo shutdown now" in a Terminal results in a screen that resembles the login screen background, but the machine is completely irresponsive and must be silenced by long-pressing the physical power button. When I use the GUI to shut down, everything works fine. Perhaps related: When waking the machine from the screen saver, the login window does not turn up before I press the "Esc" button. I am using a standard Gnome screen saver. Perhaps related: The Grub boot screen is getting more and more options every time the Linux kernel is updated.

Ubuntu :: 9.04 Will Not Hibernate After Hdd Change?

Feb 16, 2010

I have been running Ubuntu 9.04 on my netbook for quite some time.

Everything was fine hibernation and suspend both worked.

I changed out one of the hard drives (SSD) that contained my swap partition for a bigger one.

I recreated the swap partition to twice the amount of RAM

I finally got around to figuring out how to reactivate the swap file and using free it shows up.

When I set it to hibernate and close the lid I can tell by the hdd LED that it is hibernating then powers down.

But when I restart the system just boots normally instead of coming out of hibernation.

Could this be why I have never been able to resume from hibernate on this machine?

Ubuntu :: Can't Suspend Or Hibernate?

Apr 13, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. When I partitioned my HDD, I ran out of available partitions and so couldn't make a Swap Partition.I pushed on anyway, because I read here that you can create a Swap File instead of a partition that does the same thing. I've made the Swap File and it's activated (I know because during shutdown there's a message that flashes very quickly that says "Deactivating Swap [OK]".

But here's the real problem. My Ubuntu refuses to Suspend or Hibernate. The screen just goes black and the backlight stays on. Since one of the main functions of the swap file is to facilitate Suspend and Hibernate,I upgraded from 9.10 Karmic Koala, which suspended and hibernated normally.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Does Not Resume From Hibernate

Oct 14, 2010

I have ubuntu 10.04 installed on a 50 gb partition on my hard drive I have given a 3.5 gb partition for swap which is > 3gb ram i have. Druing the installation of ubuntu I had specified the swap partition and its hibernate was working fine sometimes before. But I had to delete the swap partition and recreate it because of some reasons so I did that and again created a 3.5 gb partition for swap space usig ubuntu live cd.

But after restart ubuntu no longer detected the swap partition it was ok as its uuid had changed so I specified the swap partition to be mounted automatically by adding an entry in /etc/fstab and then also added the same UUID in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume so that it could resume. After restarting ubuntu after adding the entrly in /etc/fstab i got the option of hibernate but after hibernate everything goes well but after hibernate when i start laptop again ubuntu first tries to resume but it does not and without giving any message it shows the login screen.

Ubuntu :: Netbook Does Not Hibernate When Lid Is Closed?

Jan 16, 2010

My netbook does not hibernate when lid is closed. Sometimes it does but usually not. At first I was thinking it was getting confused after recharging, thinking it was still in AC mode. I suppose it could be some process running in the background but don't know how to identify which one would cause that. If that were the case, would I be able to manually go to Hibernate?

I've checked my preferences and "On Battery Power" "When Lid is closed" is set to Hibernate.

I have an ASUS 1000. I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 9.1 karmic.

Ubuntu :: Win 7 Unable To Hibernate Under Dualboot

May 8, 2010

I have recently installed OpenSuse with GRUB boot-loader on my Vaio FW series laptop. I had to uninstall it because it caused Windows 7 to be unable to hibernate. I installed other distros (Fedora 11 and others) and the same problem recurred. This lead me to the conclusion that the problem is with the boot-loader (as my research suggested)..It has been months now, and I have not found any proper solutions to this yet. Linking this to Ubuntu, I recently downloaded and burned Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, however, I am still reluctant to install it until I know a solution is available. Has anyone had Linux-Windows 7 dualboot and also faced problems with hibernation/stand-by?
