Ubuntu :: Can't See Lower Buttons On Netbook's Little Screen?
Sep 24, 2010
I have an EEE PC 1000H, which comes with a 10.2" monitor with 1024X600 resolution. Ubuntu mostly works well on it, but on certain applications I cannot see the buttons that would appear at the bottom of the program. This has happened on the Disk Utility and Gnome Color Chooser

One day when i logged in, my screen resolution became lower. The sistem do not recognize anymore my old resolution (native) 1600x900 . And you can realize that maybe there are problems with the video card, because the system is slower than before in this terms. What could have happened?

I have found a few topics that touch on the problem I'm having but the solution won't work for me.
I am running a 800x480 desktop with Gnome, many windows are cut off at the bottom and I cannot click on the buttons. The standard reply to this problem seems to be hold alt and left click drag the window up.
That works just fine, the twist here is I'm accessing the desktop through a touch-screen (via vnc on an android phone) and I don't have an alt button to hold, dragging is also kind of tough.. I realize it may just be the limitations of my device, but it can't hurt to ask!

I did a clean install of 11.04 and I have experienced that my separate X-screen does not have the program-name bar with the minimize, close-buttons etc. It's my third monitor is a separate X and it does not really work since I cant close programs, maximize windows or move them around. I cant even write anything on it. The first two monitors work great as one X-screen, just as they did in 10.10. Ubuntu Classic, no Unity. Two monitors (one X) on a ATI HD6970 One monitor (the X-screen that doesn't work properly) on a ATI HD4870

Mandriva 2010 kde4.3.5 Dolphin 1.3I like to use split screen with file manager. Would like duplicate up and back buttons that always corraspond to each pane of the window so I need not worry about which pane has the focus when I go to use the bauttons.I am hoping to find the functionality anywhere anyhow. I have been using the default Daulphin file manager but don't care if I need to change to a different one.

I have been playing with Maverick (and this was the same on earlier versions). When I am on my netbook (a 10.1" compaq mini with resolution set at the highest setting - 1024x600) I cannot see the whole window. This happens frequently in Eveolution where the bottom of the window is 'missing' so I cannot click ok when changing setting ect. This is extremely annoying and it is the only reason why I am still running Windows on my netbook.

SO, after about a week of research and trying to get the splash screen to appear on my netbook...I've sort of got it...but not. Here's the low down.
1- Had no boot splash at first. Now I do in low rez.
2- Had shutdown splash in Hi rez...now in low rez.
3- Boot splash lasts about a second at best...prior to that... black screen after I select ubuntu from the boot menu.
I have tried editing grub, updating afterwards, startup manager, online text help...nothing seems to be working to get the end result of Nice looking Plymouth splash screens (the nice purplish UBUNTU screens)
My netbook is an ASUS 1005PE with 2 gigs ram. Ubuntu is the only O/S (Boot menu shows the back up of the win7 install on my smart card). I am running the 64bit version. I also have Ubuntu on my HP HDX18 dual booting with windows7. No issues there. Hence my confusion.
Now...I'm not the most Linux sauvy to say...the last time I looked at Linux was Redhat back in '95 or '96. I'm a dos guy... so I'm not opposed to learning...just need to understand it better thats all. Anyways...if anyone can shed some light on this, that would be awesome. Aside form this hickup, everything seems to run just fine.

On this Lenovo netbook: I was playing with Firefox, came across a security.ubuntu.com problem, established in general terms what it was referring to and that it might be easier just to reinstall Ubuntu andupgrade to 9.04.Succesfully installed, it said, please to do a restart. But the screen is blank. Now, all I have is a totally dark screen whether booting off the hard drive (it starts running and clicking, then stops clicking; staysrunning 'til I switch off again) or via the external CD drive (which lights up, flashing, for a few moments while clicking, then runs down).
I've tried the Ubuntu CD which originally installed ok, and also the one from which I'd first installed Ubuntu instead of XP.I wondered if I'd inadvertently switched off the screen, but apparentlynot - in any case, presumably it would default to On? I've also looked forsomething on an external screen, I know that works because I played with
it a few weeks ago. fn-F" to toggle the screen doesn't do anything, nor fn-up/down to change brightness. I've just tried ctrl-alt-backspace, with CD and HDD, to no effect.
The battery's fully charged but in any case I'm using the psu and alllights are correctly lit. I've reseated the CD leads several times to besure.I've never networked it to the desktop - it had seemed a good idea to keep them separate so only one gets broken.

I've got a Disney edition Asus EeePC with an xp/9.10 nbr dual boot. The 9" screen has a native resolution of 1024x600, but in xp it can expand that to 1024x768- either by scrolling the desktop up and down a bit, or by what they call "LCD Compress" mode, where ever thing gets squished vertically a bit to fit 768pixels of info in 600 pixels of space.
My daughter uses it to play games on webkinz.com, and their games pop up on a 800px high non resizable or scrollable window, so there are controls and junk that fall off the bottom that can't be reached unless I'm put it in one of the 768 pixel modes. That, and with her task bar set to auto hide, she can play games and have a good time. how do I set up Ubuntu 9.10 to do the same thing? Right now, the only screen resolution in Ubuntu is 1024x600.

I installed Ubuntu netbook remix on an HP mini 110-3130 and its working great. My only complaint is that with certain webpages or programs part of the window goes beyond the dimensions of the screen. Is there any way for me to fix that? for example some program windows go below the screen and others go further right than the screen. I have attached an image that serves as the perfect example.

I bought a Asus eeepc a few days ago which I really like, with the exception of one thing - windows 7 starter. I like Windows 7, but starter is just bad. I also really like ubuntu, so I've decided to put it on my netbook. I download the netbook edition from the site, put it on a usb drive, and than tested it out - well, my screen is dim, very dim. Changing the brightness setting on the tool bar up top doesn't change anything, and using the function keys does change it, but still keeps it very dim.
I've tried restarting my computer, same thing, I've tried messing around with settings in the battery options, nothing... I really don't want to install it if its going to be this dark, I can see things, but its not very pleasant to use. I'm starting to consider that its the problem with the file I downloaded. Theres nothing wrong with my netbook, everything worked perfectly fine in Windows 7. I use the full version of ubuntu 10.04 on my other laptop which works perfectly fine, I'm not sure why this version is acting so weird on my netbook.

How do I move the Window control buttons when the window is in full screen mode? I.e.: I know how to go into gconf-editor:
Code:
gconf-editor --> apps --> metacity --> general --> button layout = ":minimize,maximize,close"
(I've intentionally disabled the menu...)
What I want is my window controls to be on the right side of the window when the window is in full screen mode.
Also I've had an issue with the Unity dockbar glitching out. I can still click on the buttons (i.e. the logout button) but it displays like a nintendo game inserted crooked. Is there a way to 'restart' unity without log out/ log in?
Any one else experienced any glitches with unity auto hiding/showing?

I have a netbook with a maximum screen resolution of 1024x600. I'm running a dualboot Ubuntu10.10 & Backtrack4r2, and I'm having some trouble with windows whose "height" was larger than 600px. Buttons end up below the screen, and I can't click 'Ok' or 'Cancel' or 'Apply'.
When my OS was still Windows7, I didn't have any problems because I can resize all of the windows that I use. Most of windows in linux (esp. in KDE settings), the windows has a fixed height.
Is there any workarounds to my problem?

Well, it's a long story, but to make it short I foolishly upgraded my wife's netbook many months ago to 10.04, not knowing that the new xserver version will cause me lots of grief with the gma500 driver. Back then, I ran an update that completely borked my system, and my only fix was to do another clean install. Since the, I just did not do any more upgrades.
So, months have gone by, and the netbook has not had any upgrades. I've read some instructions in the gma500 megathread on how to safely upgrade the system. To start, I had to purge the psb-kernel-source, do upgrades, and reinstall the psb-kernel-source and the other poulsbo drivers. I did all that, and now it boots to a black screen. I can't ctrl-alt-f1 to a terminal session either.
I really don't want to do another clean install. With the crappy broadcom driver as well, it's a real chore. And because of the crappy broadcom driver, I can't figure any way to get a wifi connection from the command line either.

I am trying to install Ubuntu Netbook on an iiView A2. I realize this is not necessarily supported according to the Ubuntu documentation, however, one of my friends who has the same netbook was able to accomplish this with no issues. The computer boots up from the USB just fine, I get to the menu and choose install Ubuntu. I see a cursor flash on the screen for a second and then the Ubuntu logo. Immediately after seeing the Ubuntu logo the screen goes black (or blank) and I get no HDD activity (or any other activity). I have let it set for quite some time but it does not appear to be doing anything. This same kind of thing happens when I choose Try Ubuntu without installing from the initial menu after boot.how to install from the command line and edit xorg.conf later?

Long, sad story made short. I have a Samsung Netbook running Windows XP Home, SP3. I set it up to dual boot with Ubuntu, just so I could play around with Ubuntu. Well, Ubuntu started giving me trouble: my internet connection went south, I was unable to adjust the brightness of the Netbook screen, etc., and when I looked for troubleshooting help on the internet, it was all Greek to me as it involved working with Terminal.
I did a search for removing a partition in Windows XP and found "How to use Disk Management to configure basic disks in Windows XP" on the Microsoft and followed the instructions there.

I had Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and used the Upgrader to go to 10.10. After it went through downloading and installing Ubuntu, it wanted me to restart. Upon restarting and picking Ubuntu in the Boot Options, it says something is missing in NTFS called wiulibsomething then it goes to this cmd type screen with grub>. I have used Linux for about three weeks now, and I think one of the threads after me has already talked about this and I'm really not sure how any of this works. I don't want to sound dumb, but yeah, I've used Windows all my life and I'm clueless how to fix this. EDIT: Error is Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB possible device or file completions.

I am having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix edition onto a Acer Aspire one netbook. I am attempting to install the OS from a 16GB PNY usb drive w/ the usb-universal installer and ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix .ISO
The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.

Why i cant change from 800x480 to 1024x600, that this model of EEE pc doesnt support anything higher than 800x480 at the 10:1 ratio...
Firstly my question is, is it ACTUALLY possible to 'overclock' this type of netbook to run a higher res?
Im running ubtuntu netbook remix 10.04 and am new to linux (again, so sorry) so be nice, and ive tried getting my head around this 'sudo' stuff, and the xorg.conf file (which is nowhere to be found) and ive even tried a program calld astray but im pretty sure ive exhausted my patience as trying to self-teach . . .
And ive also tried to much around with xrandr or whatever that command was.. but i cant really get my head around it, and it kept telling me the resolution didnt exist ect...

For the past 2hrs I have been struggling to make KDE launch plasma-dekstop instead of plasma-netbook, but all in vain.I removed, then purged plasma-netbook and plasma-netbook-default-settings packages but after logging out and re-logging in the Netbook UI was back! After restarting the system now I can't even seem to get the KDM. I am greeted with a black screen.--- I restarted the system again and the nasty little bugger is back again! This is so frustrating. How do I get plasma-desktop to load instead?---- Great now I can see that plasma-desktop and plasma-netbook both are running simultaneously! netbook on top of desktop. So my final Q is how do I stop plasma-netbook from loading?

I installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 and immediately noticed the keyboard of my eeepc 1000HE was abnormally warm. Since I dual boot XP I booted to XP and found the fan running faster to compensate for the previous heat. This did not happen on Ubuntu-the fan just was barely running. I had to place the side of the netbook in order to feel the fan running. I issued "sensors" in terminal and it showed 67 degrees C for the cpu temp. Is the latest Ubuntu such a resource hug that it heats up the CPU?
