Ubuntu :: 'Files' Mount Disconnects / Solution For This?

Mar 25, 2010

I've posted about this previously, but I am unable to find that post...

I have a separate partition: 'files'.

This has the mount point of: '/files'.

My /home/johnathan folder is a symbolic link to:
/files/installed/backup/johnathan

So when this particular mount point '/files' is not available I get errors stating ICEAuthority and that /Desktop and /.nautilus can not be created.

If I log in as root, I can not mount the drive using System > Administration > Disk Utility

I get the error that '/files' can not be mounted because it is un use.

Sometimes, if I wait a while while logged in a root it will 'magically' mount and work again... then I can login as my profile.

I love Ubuntu that it keeps all of your settings and program settings within the profile. So, if I have to reformat or reinstall Ubuntu I simply recreate the symbolic link to /files/installed/backup/johnathan and all of my settings are back. All that is left is to reinstall my apps and I am back to where I was before reinstalling.

So, how can I correct this? I do have two other partitions that have mount points, but they do NOT do this like '/files' does.

I've even replaced the UUID in '/etc/fstab' with the path tot he partition: '/dev/sda2'. This also didn't work.

Fedora Installation :: Upgraded And Now Can't Mount Home / Solution For This?

Mar 23, 2009

"Upgraded" from FC5 32 bit to Fedora 10 64 bit using Fedora Live KDE disk, and unchecking the boxes to format drives with my personal data. In the install it recognized these as SW raid devices. One is raid 1, the other raid 5.

Now, it still recognizes the raid devices, and mdstat claims they are working fine, but I cannot mount them (mount says must specify a FS type, but that doesn't work either).

Ubuntu Installation :: Duplicate Drives In "Places" - Error "mount: /dev/sdd1 Already Mounted Or /media/Data Busy Mount: According To Mtab, /dev/sdd1 Is Already Mounted On /media/Data"

Feb 13, 2010

Just moved to Ubuntu from XP. Whole process has gone very smoothly, but left with a small problem (i.e. it isn't actually affecting usability) that I don't seem to be able to fix and can't find on forums/internet. I also have a problem with the Floppy drive, but I've seen that problem elsewhere in the forums.

It's a dual boot system with both NTFS and Ext4 drives. All are visible and fully accessible. I decided to convert one of the NTFS drive to Ext4. That appeared to be successful and was successfully remounted as an Ext4 drive. The drive label is "Data". I did have a bit of a problem getting it remounted so that I could see/use it under my log-in as opposed to just under root. It's at this point I think that I did something to create the problem.

I now have two entries for "Data" in drop down menu for Places. The true one is shown as a standard hard drive icon, but the false one is shown as a different icon - possibly an external drive icon (note that the floppy drive is also showing as the same icon and I can't access that, but I've seen that's a problem elsewhere in the forums).

I can write and read to the true "Data" hard drive. If I click on the other false "Data" icon, I get the message "mount: /dev/sdd1 already mounted or /media/Data busy mount: according to mtab, /dev/sdd1 is already mounted on /media/Data". If unmount the true drive and try to mount the false drive, the system mounts the true drive instead. If I log into nautilus as root, neither the false data drive or the floppy appear in the left hand panel.

Ubuntu :: Save Data From Laptop With Broken Graphical Chip?

Aug 19, 2011

I have here a Fujitsu-Siemens laptop with Windows Vista on it. The graphical chip of this laptop is damaged in such a way that during boot I can see texts but once the GUI starts it is over. No more picture. This happens with Vista, but also when I boot a live-cd from Ubuntu. The owner of this laptop, not me, wants to buy a new one but would like all data to be saved.I have downloaded the server version of Ubuntu 10.04 (so I stay in text mode) and with the CD I can boot into restore mode. There it is possible to mount the internal hard-disk, after which I can see the data.

But... how do I get it from the disc? How do I setup the network, which I believe is running already, to make the laptop a part of my home network? Now from other computers I can't see this laptop, and I have no idea how to see my computers from this laptop.Or is it possible to burn a CD/DVD in Restore mode. If so how do I do that?

OpenSUSE :: How To Save (backup) User Application Settings And Data?

Feb 10, 2010

I managed to damage my 11.2 installation so it starts in the GUI mode only in failsafe mode. Actually I tried before to repair the installation, using the install DVD, but the automatic repair procedure failed. More than that, since then boot loader also seams to be "repaired" so that the Windows installation doesn't appear in the boot menu, but this is another thing. For me, now, the fastest way to get a stable system is to make a new installation. The biggest problem is that I cannot save/backup the emails and accounts settings in an elegant way. I'm using Thunderbird. Of course I would also like to save other apps settings. So is there a way to save user application settings so that I can used them after a new install? I had a look to the yast backup tool but these seams to be a way to archive files, or am I wrong?

General :: Windows Laptop Won't Boot Up - Use Live CD To Save Data?

Apr 21, 2010

I have a Windows laptop that isn't booting up anymore for some reason Safe Mode doesn't even work. Looking at what is printed out when it hangs, I did a search on google and it is some sort of HP laptop problem. Apparently the hard drive should still be OK, if only I can access it somehow. I was thinking maybe I could use one of those live Linux CDs to boot up. But I'm not too familiar with those. Would they be able to detect the laptop's DVD burner, and allow me to burn files off the NTFS partition to a blank DVD? I want to get my data off before I hand the laptop over to the IT department - who knows what they will do to it. So exactly which live Linux CD flavor should I use (my other working computer only has a CD burner)? And then would it be easy to burn a DVD after booting up the live Linux CD?

Fedora Hardware :: Save Data On Bluray Disks Of 25 Gb ( Better Than Dvds, More Space )?

May 18, 2011

I want to buy another laptop. I want to use FC on it. I need bluray because I want to save data on bluray disks of 25 gb (better than dvds, more space). I have one option, a fujitsu that has bluray writer, big display (I have another one, other model, same size and it's working fine with Fc14, only some small issues).

Second option is a Dell (I had an older dell inspiron before, which worked fine with FC), more expensive, lacking a writer, but it can read bluray. If I take this, I would have to also buy an external bluray writer. Has nice specs, but I am really worried about the graphic card, whether I can make it work with Fc14. I saw some people having problems with linux and this graphic card, while searching on google.

Here's specs for both (sorry for the language from website, but I found in English other specs than these, I guess the specs can be read easily): Dell XPS L702x and FUJITSU Lifebook NH570 I am inclining more towards the Fujitsu, but haven't decided yet.

Programming :: Save / Load Data Segment Of Dynamically Loaded Shared Object Library?

Aug 25, 2010

Our application uses a dynamically loaded shared object library (codec library) to compress and decompress audio streams.

There happens to be several static and global variables in this shared object library. Hence it is not possible to process two interleaved unrelated media streams using this shared object codec library because each stream corrupts/changes the contents of these static/global variables.

Is there a way through which a context save (save contents of data segment of shared object) and a context load (load previously saved contents of data segment of shared object)operation can be performed on the shared object library. This way the context for each media stream can be saved and loaded before and after processing the "other" media stream respectively.

Ubuntu :: HDD Failed / Anyway To Mount It To Recover Data?

Feb 28, 2010

It seems my 320gb HDD has bitten the dust. The timing couldn't be more ironic as I have spent a couple of days tidying the files on it to burn them to disk.

This is an ntfs drive that had indicated 4 bad sectors but up until today (backup day) was fine. I am unable to mount it and in fact it is causing some sort of conflict with the OS drive and wont let the system boot up successfully.

I am going to try using a windows based PC tomorrow to see if I can rescue the data.

Are there any 'other' tricks to try and mount it with ubuntu that I may not have tried so far? I have tried-

mkdir /media/disk
fdisk -l to establish it's name which was /dev/sdb1 when it was all working but it isn't reachable and doesn't show in the places menu or in any of the menus when using a live CD to get round the HDD clash.
sudo mount -a used in desperation after the mkdir but nothing.

I rejigged the cabling inside the PC to make the HDD a secondary master as it was a slave on the primary IDE to start with in the hope that the system would boot up normally but to no avail.

Ubuntu :: How To Mount Partitions For Data Access

Jul 3, 2010

I figured I could just go in to my Kubuntu desktop and look at the drive. But it has only a lost and found and grub folder with a few files on the root named config-[version]-server (note this is a SCSI). Guessing I'm looking at the boot partition? So how do I mount the other partitions? When I do a fdisk -l I see 3 sdb 1,2,3 (2 and 3 are large, 1 is my boot partition) but when mounting them I get wrong fs type. I was sure its ext3 ( also tried 2 and 4 )? I just left the default 7.04 fs when I installed it. I'm able to put it in my desktop and my server but for the life of me I can figure out how to get at the data.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Mount Data Drives

Jan 9, 2011

I installed 10.10 on my workstation but now my system refuses to mount two existing two data drives that were already there... sudo mount /dev/sdc /mnt/data-b gives me: mount: unknown filesystem type 'isw_raid_member'

I didn't change any BIOS settings... My BIOS is not configured for RAID at all, that setting reads AHCI, which should be okay for my kernel (using the stock 2.6.35-24).

I tried to force mount one of the drives with sudo mount -t ext3 /dev/sdc /mnt/data-b

but this gives me an even stranger message:
"/dev/sdc already mounted or /mnt/data-b busy (neither of them are true...)

It's mainly the "isw_raid_member" thing that troubles me... I didn't and don't have a RAID system at all..

Fedora Hardware :: "Drive Failure Expected In Less Than 24 Hours. Save All Data Immediately"

Nov 21, 2009

I have a 500GB Hitachi external hard drive that I use for backup. It's about 17 months old and has barely been used. Two partitions reside on it: a 446.2GB ext4 partition I use for backup and an LVM partition that contains an NTFS partition and another ext4 partition.

I started it and connected it to my laptop today (after not using for 4 months). A libnotify message warned that "drive failure [was] expected in less than 24 hours." Palimpset shows "Reallocated Sector Count" with status "FAILING" and value "343 sectors" and "Current Pending Sector Count" with value "1556" and status "FAILING". At first I figured it was just the self-check being programmed for NTFS only (not unheard of). But then I saw that Palimpset has the Linux partition labelled as "unrecognized". The temperature is normal (about 20C). What's going on here?I have not mounted the drive yet and the data is largely unimportant, so I'm more concerned about the hardware (even though hardware damage seems the unlikely possibility). To prevent or minimize hardware damage, what would my best course of action be?
