Ubuntu :: Can't Install Webcam Driver
Jan 23, 2010
I am migrating to Ubuntu and so far I find it superior. But there are a few things that are a little difficult to grasp. The installation of a webcam driver is intricate. I've downloaded the driver ov511-1.65.tar.gz which is applicable to my old and faithful Creative webcam. From [URL] I got the OV511 Installation Instructions:
But I fail at the first step, to become root. This is what I get:
Code:
coco@coco-desktop:~$ su
Contrasea:
su: Fallo de autenticacin
coco@coco-desktop:~$
I tried several times and wrote the password I use to start the session, the only one I have. It doesn't help that you are blind to the results of typing, but I tried again and again. I can't be that wrong always.
Also I can't decompress the driver.

On my Ubuntu (10.04) system, the Ativa SMP-6AS webcam has worked out of the box. On a minimalistic (no gui) Debian Lenny system, it only creates devices for audio (/dev/audio1, /dev/dsp1, /dev/mixer1), but no corresponding /dev/video0 (like it does on Ubuntu). How do I find out what driver it's using on the Ubuntu system so I can install it on the Debian?

I did some research on both Mic and Webcam, but nothing for the mic seems to work, and I can't seem to find decent instructions for installing the spca5xx driver for my webcam. lsusb result for my webcam: Bus 001 Device 002: ID 04fc:0561 Sunplus Technology Co., Ltd Flexcam 100
My mic, on the otherhand, doesn't seem to be nothing too special. It plugs into the back of the computer right next to the speakers. I've searched everywhere for how to fix these, but can't seem to find anything that works. As for my mic, I've tried installing the... linux modules backport, etc... through synaptic, nothing. I've gone through alsamixer, and sound properties. The only thing I can think of, is that the computer isn't reading my mic.
Sorry if this post is kind of scattered, but I've gotten 2 hours of sleep last night, and not able to sleep again, Also, if anyone can point me in a direction of IM services that allow AIM, MSN, and YIM chat support through my friends on the windows OS. I've heard of Skype, but I don't want to seem too demanding to ask them all to download a program just to speak with / see me.

I am pretty concerned with my build-in webcam. The problem is, that it does not work properly and I guess that the driver crashes my interrups to access it. The result is, that my system is damn slow, almost unusable. In previous issues of Fedora, I was able to un-install the gspca driver and the system worked fine again. Now, I cannot find this driver - so where is it gone?

Last week I got a newer kernel via Yast -> Online Update. Since then, my Logitech webcam does not work anymore. Neither with Skype or Kopete. After starting skype, the output of dmesg is:
gspca: bandwidth not wide enough - trying again ohci_hcd 0000:00:12.0: leak ed f44e30c0 (#81) state 2
When I unplug the webcam and plug it into another USB-port and start skype again, it works most of the time. Sometimes I have to repeat this several times. Wen it works, the output of dmesg is:
usb 7-4: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 2
usb 7-4: New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=092f
usb 7-4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
usb 7-4: Product: Camera

The Fedora 14 (and 13) pwc Philips Webcam Driver.is only supporting 160x120 resolution (and nothing higher such as 640x480). Also not supporting some other things correctly, I suspect.I say so having tested multiple web camera software and either they don't work (because they have no setting for low res) or they do work if settable to low res., but not for any higher res.I also have a working setpwc tool which shows the driver does not support framerate resetting.I have a Toucam and Toucam Pro - same for both. Also these units worked fine under Fedora 11, and under earlier versions even Red Hat 4.But I usually got the latest pwc from Saillaird.org and compiled it to get full support but there are no more current sources there anymore, and the older ones don't compile. But as I am saying under F11 it was fully correct, now under F13 and 14 it is broken.

ov51x-jpeg rpm was available for opensuse 11.0 and previous versions. I fail to find it for 11.1. My webcam requires it (IIRC it is a creative webcam ... if anybody requires details I can pull it out of my basement).I am comfortable with command-line, however I would prefer not to compile the source code (I am not familiar with compiling kernel modules )

I have a webcam (Trust 16430 [Chat Webcam]) that just doesn't seem to work. Now according to multple guides I simply have to install easycam2 to find the drivers and install the cam. There lies another problem, easycam2 is giving me a hard time... it just won't install.
