I have a WD MyPassport 320GB external hdd and Ubuntu 10.10. The problem is that I can't access my drive after waking from sleep. I can't even unmount it; gives me an error like: "umount: /media/0A26FE8626FE71D5 mount disagrees with the fstab".
View 2 RepliesSince installing 10.04 yesterday my laptop will not wake correctly from sleep mode. Opening the lid wakes the machine up but the graphics are all wrong. Loads of tightly packed horizontal lines. Turning the machine off and restarting makes all ok. It's only on wake up does the problem happen. The laptop is an Acer 1652,with an ATI Mobile Radeon X300 graphics card. Intel Pentium M.

View 6 Replies View RelatedAt home in Guangzhou, I have no problem connecting to a WPA-secured wireless router.Now I'm on vacation in another city trying to use a dLink DI-624 router. If I connect immediately after reboot, no problem. If I suspend the session and then wake the machine up again, it will try to connect and then tell me WPA authentication failed.This happens both with network manager and wicd.sysinfo says the network controller is an Atheros AR9285 (ethernet is Realtek RTL8101E/8102E, probably not relevant).Since everything works correctly with routers other than the dLink, I'd have to guess it's not a general wireless configuration problem, nor a wireless card malfunction. Maybe some bad handshaking that manifests only after waking from sleep?More out of curiosity -- I'll only be here for a few weeks and a wired connection is readily available. But, say I end up in a hotel somewhere that uses dLink for WiFi

I am pretty sure this is an X issue and not a driver issue because if I log out the trackpad works again. This is also sporadic. Sometimes it occurs, sometimes it does not. Is there some configuration I need to set to fix this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an external hard drive which connects to a usb port. until recently i could unmount it by right clicking on the desktop icon and selecting unmount. now when i try that it tells me that i can't because the device is not in fstab and i am not the root. i checked mtab and it had this line '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos rw,noexec,nodev,nosuid 0 0' i changed that to '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos user,rw,noexec,nodev,nosuid 0 0' thinking that would fix it, but it didn't. i unmounted using 'sudo umount /media/usb0' and restarted my computer and now the line in mtab reads '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 vfat rw,noexec,nodev,sync,noatime,nodiratime 0 0' and i still can't unmount without using the sudo umount command. i also tried adding '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos user,rw,noexec,nodev,nosuid 0 0' to fstab and that didn't help

I am using Lubuntu 10.10.
I have Seagate Freeagent Go 500GB external hard drive that I use for backup. I wanted to resize the partition so I used GParted to shrink the 500GB NTFS partition to 400GB. The other 100 I wanted to encrypt and use for some other more important files. For some reason, the shrink failed and I disconnected the hard drive and reconnected it. I didn't see the icon appear on the desktop. I went into the Disk Utility to discover that GParted's shrink error deleted all of the partitions on my hard drive. So I created a new 400GB NTFS partition and put back all of my files. The other 100 is unallocated currently.
It will normally mount automatically and show up on the desktop but the hard drive won't mount without me going into the Disk Utility and mounting it through there. I can't even mount it from the Terminal with root privileges. It gives me this:

Now, I can unmount with root privileges and I can unmount it from the Disk Utility. I can browse and edit the files within. But I can't unmount it from within Nautilus or on the desktop (the Safely Remove Drive option is not there).
The new 400GB partition also isn't detected by GParted. It just shows the whole drive as unallocated.
I've been running Linux for a year on our family computers (one desktop, one laptop and two netbooks). I've run into a problem with the encrypted ext4 partition (270GB) on a LaCie external hard drive which also has a NTFS partition (50GB) which is not encrypted . First two times I tried using the encrypted ext4 partition (from two different computers) it worked fine but now I can't access it at all. I can still access the NTFS partition.Encrypted external hard drive partition will unlock but won't mount (or unmount). The computer says "Opening 320GB Hard Disk" but after a minute says, "Unable to mount location. DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply"Disk utility (GUI for gparted I believe) states that the encrypted partition (/dev/sdb1) is unlocked and the underlying partition (/dev/dm-0) is not mounted but it has a "busy circle sign" on it that will not turn off. The NTFS partition on the same drive mounts and accesses normally.
But if I try to unmount the NTFS partition, it says: "Unable to stop drive. One or more partitions are busy on /dev/sdb"If I try to shut down the computer, it is unable to shut down because (I assume) it can't shut down that drive either. So I have to just turn off the computer.fdisk states that /dev/dm-0 doesn't have a valid partition table [full output attached]fsck suggests: "Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?"ps axuf shows some processes running on /dev/dm-0 but killinghem doesn't release the drive either. [full output attached]I checked /etc/blkid.tab (suggested in one vaguely related thread) and there's no actual file only a broken link pointing to /dev/.blkid.tab (which doesn't exist). I tried deleting this link and rebooting but that didn't change anything.when I finally gave up my data as lost, I tried to format the partition (using Disk Utility) and it refused saying, "One or more block devices are holding /dev/sdb"
I am trying to mount an external USB hard drive. I'm using Debian Lenny 5. I tried to right-click on the hard drive and then select the mount command inside the gnome desktop environment but it gives me an error. Is there an easy way to mount and unmount this hard drive? The hard drive itself is formatted from the factory in NTFS. I'm going to leave it in this file format is a need to use it with Windows machines as well.

I had dev/sda6 for that purpose and I mounted it only when needed and it was encrypted with password. Due to issues with file permissions, I had to re-install the OS. This time I do not have access to the dev/hda6 drive (owned as root) and get warnings when trying to unmount or encript it.

I am reporting two problems that could be related to each other. They have something to do with USB devices upon passing through the ACPI S3 sleep-resume cycle. The hardware is Thinkpad T450s, with Debian 8 64-bit edition. Kernel is provided by either the stock linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64 or Liquorix's linux-image-4.1-3.dmz.1-liquorix-amd64 . For this case, it does not matter; the problem exists in both versions.
I have an external USB hub which has a USB keyboard receiver (for Microsoft wireless keyboard/mouse combo) attached to the hub. I then usually attach this hub to the laptop.
FIRST: The main problem is that the USB hub was not going to be re-detected upon resumption from sleep. Here is the sequence of events, in brief:
* Laptop was resumed from S3 sleep
* USB hub was attached to the laptop (has external keyboard receiver attached to the hub)--both were detected & working properly
* Laptop was put to S3 sleep
* Laptop was resumed from S3 sleep, both hub and external keyboard were not detected, the syslog says "USB disconnect" to that particular device.
Note that during all the actions above, the laptop is running by external AC power.
SECOND: I also found that the USB hub, if inserted while the laptop was asleep (before resumed), it would not get detected. `lsusb` turns nothing for that device, as if nothing was inserted in the laptop's USB port.
THIRD: I did an experiment this way: instead of putting keyboard receiver on the hub, I attached it to the laptop directly. Hub is still attached elsewhere on the laptop as well. In this way, the keyboard receiver is not malfunctioning after resume. But I found out that the keyboard receiver is behaving funny after resumption. It went to a kind of "very low power" state a lot when idling (not receiving keystroke/mouse movement) for more than about 3 seconds. This causes the external keyboard response to be sluggish, since the receiver has to be turned on back to "active" state before able to responsively receive keystrokes properly again. And this causes a lot of lost keystrokes.
In the second case, the sequence of events are like this:
* Laptop was resumed from S3 sleep
* USB hub was attached to the laptop; it is working
* External keyboard receiver was attached to the laptop; it is working
* Laptop was put to S3 sleep
* Laptop was resumed from S3 sleep, the hub was not detected anymore; the syslog says "USB disconnect" to that particular device. The external keyboard was re-detected, but now is running in a funny power state described above.
These issues did not exist when I use a different laptop running Debian 7/oldstable (wheezy).

I found several postings on the web similar to this, e.g. [URL] .... and see the references therein. But I don't think the problem is the same as mine. In particular, only external USB hub gives me problem like this (as well as the keyboard receiver, to a lesser extent)..
Having problems with external hard drives. I may be wrong, but I suspect they originated with an upgrade to 10.04 last Christmas. Around that time I also started using Amazon's S3 storage system, and, as a consequence, I stopped using my WD 80G external drive, previously used to backup my important files.
A week or so ago I decided to start using the WD drive again. I can't remember exactly what I did, but it wasn't happy - never caused any problems before. When I plug it in, the on-off light as the front keeps flashing on and off, and when I try to remove the drive I get the message: Error unmounting volumne An error occured while performing an operation on "My Book" (Partition 1 of WD 800BB External): The device is busy
Details: Cannot unmount because file system on device is busy Assuming the device had died - it's about 5 years old - I bought a 160G Samsung S-Series drive - my but they do look neat! Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to have solved my problem. I plugged the new drive in, and it happily appeared on my desktop. It seemed a good idea at the time, but I then started to format the drive - using the default option of FAT. All went well at first, but then the format process stopped.
My new Samsung drive now seems to be operating pretty much as the WD device, I can't copy to the drive, and attempts to unmount it generate a response similar to what's happening with the WD drive. Currently, although plugged in, I can't see the drive on my desktop, although it appears under Places. However, when I try to mount the drive, I get the message: Unable to mount SAMSUNG A job is pending on /dev/sdb1
I have an external USB drive with one ext4 partition on it. When I plug it in it's mounted and a file manager window pops up. However, I am not able to create files/folders unless I'm root. I have to open Nautilus as root to put files on it. How do I set it so that I as a user can add files/folders to the drive having them end up with the same owner/permissions I have as a user? It's to cumbersome having to sudo every move with regards to the USB drive.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm setting up a home web server using LAMP that I want to use to access files and practice coding, but I am very new to Linux and web servers. I currently have it so I can access phpMyAdmin and the test pages locally through my internal IP, but whenever I try to access it through the external IP I get this router management console that I don't know the password or username to. I know my router login and password and it's not the same as that. I've forwarded port 80 and when that didn't work I tried changing /etc/apache2/ports.conf to 8080 and I forwarded that port on my router with no luck too.
It doesn't seem to matter if I have any ports forwarded, though, it still brings me to the same screen regardless. Also, I have set up a static IP on the server by modifying the /etc/network/interfaces file. I've attached a screenshot with the actual router management console screen. I won't have access to the server until later, but, if you require any output from the server I will be sure to post it as soon as I get home. I'm not using ubuntu for my webserver, but debian instead because ubuntu server had a whole bunch of problems with my PCMCIA network card. Ubuntu suggestions should work just fine, but I just thought I should clarify.
I have the old version 8.10 installed in my laptop. The laptop already some battery issue and after the power failure i cannot access the external usb drives anymore.I have ntfs-configuration installed and do not know how to access the drives using the tool.Every time i try to access the drive it says that i do not have the privilege to mount the volume.
View 1 Replies View RelatedStrangest thing...yesterday my 11.04 box lost the ability to access anything external. I can ssh to the box from outside my network, and all other boxes on my network are fine, but this one box can't hit anything external. If I attempt to ping a site it's doing the same resolution, but no packets are delivered.
Up until yesterday it was running fine, and I didn't make any changes to my home network or install any updates. Totally stumped.
Edit: this is a wired connection with a static internal IP.
Recently I've formated my PC. I've installed Fedora 11 in my new HDD. Through a doxky station I've connected my old HDD (with Fedora 11 too) but I can't gain access. Through "palimpsest disk utility" I can see my HDD:

If I click on "750 GB LVM2 Physical Volume" I can read the attribute type of partition as Linux LVM (0x8e). Unfortunately I can gain access inside to recover my old documents and backups.
I have proftpd setup on my Aspire Revo (which I'm using as an HTPC) so that I can download files to my mac when I feel like watching in bed or whatever. I recently purchased a 1TB WD Elements to store my media. I have proftpd setup so that I can access every file on the computer. However, when I try to gain access to the Elements HD, I get an FTP error from Cyberduck that says:
/media/Elements: no such file or directory
Note that I have not formatted the drive or anything - just set it up straight out of the box. My media is loaded on to it, and XBMC reads the files fine. Is there a way I can enable the hard drive (or the OS) to share these files over FTP, or is this not possible?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.04 set up on my acer revo, this is connected to a wireless router via ethernet. Next door, is a pc that is running windows XP, and an original XBOX running XBMC. Those are connected via a crossover cable. The XP machine connects to the web wirelessly using my router, and the connections are bridged for XBMC's TV show scrappers. The idea is we use the revo for downloading as it consumes a relatively small amount of electricity. I have two external 1tb drives connected to the revo with Tv shows and movies, I would set up a network share so the XP machine could see them, and the xbox would be able to share the videos present.
I have installed samba, right clicked the drives in question and clicked the sharing options. I have ticked to allow guest access, and write access. This worked! I the shared the /home directory on the revos harddrive using exactly the same method. This worked. However I was no longer able to access the External drives. The UID has remained the same. I then tried unsharing /home, still no joy. Tried resharing /home Home now works, but still the externals don't.
I've encountered a very frustrating problem. I have both my desktop and my laptop computer installed with Ubuntu 10.10 recently. And I use a external hard drive formatted in EXT3 as a backup. I created the EXT3 partition on my external hard drive using my laptop, but I cannot access those files using my desktop. What's going on? If one day I lost my laptop, does it mean even if I have backup, I can never access without my laptop??? How can I solve this problem?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had an external harddrive connected via USB to my laptop, and I was copying all the data over to another drive so that I could format this one. About 1/3 of the way through copying, the power went off and the drive obviously shut off (laptop kept running since it's on battery).
Now when I try reconnecting the drive and mounting it, I get the error "mount: Stale NFS file handle". Same error on 3 different linux machines. I have read as much as I can on this issue and done the following to try to recover the drive/data. fsck multiple times, with different options, but exits every time with an "aborted" message after cycling through over 1000 inode errors. Then, tried recovering superblock from all backup locations on the drive. This didn't help either. I backed up up the drive with dd command so I have an image file just in case.
Any functions to do with partitioning refuse to work too. I am stumped here as I need to recover this data somehow and I haven't a clue as to what/why this happened. How I can recover the contents of this drive? And the drive is/was ext2.
I am trying to access an external hard drive mounted on /media/disk_label/ over FTP anonymously. The thing is it does not work as intended.
I tried fiddling with se-linux, manually mounting the media, playing around with file permissions and stuff .. but nothing sufficed.
Things work fine when I set anon_root to a directory on the local hdd but and also with the default /var/ftp but as soon as I set anon_root=/media/disk_label/ftp ..

I have a Belkin router with an external HDD attached to it through the USB port on the router. Every time I try to access it, I get a popup asking for the username, domain name, and password. I have no idea how to gain access to it in Fedora. I can access it fine with windows XP and 7, but get the login screen when using Fedora. I can access my shared files on the xp machine just fine with fedora, but not the external on the router. Do I need to do some extra configuring with samba to get it to work? What is my domain password anyway, I don't ever remember setting one up? Is there a way to find out and just plug it in when the login screen pops up? I am clueless, I tried searching, but everything I come up with involves vpn, which I am not using. If it helps, I sometimes get a similar login screen in windows as well, usually when I first log into either my xp machine or my 7. Its not every time I log in, but it does occasionally happen, I have no idea why. Networking is just not my forte. What I do to get around it is go into a file browser and type in the network location (\192.168.1.1FreeAgent Drive). Once I have done this I can can access the drive by clicking on the map I created in 'My Computer'.

I am interested in sharing an external drive between two computers. I do not want to disconnect the drive from one and then connect it on the other one - I want to share it.
Would this work with an external USB drive and a normal USB hub? Or is it something more complicated/impossible?
Also connecting the machines via network is not possible - it has to be USB, or I can connect it to one machine also via Ethernet but the second connection has to be USB.
