Ubuntu Servers :: Oracle 10 Express - External IP Address Access Failure

Feb 5, 2010

I just installed the Ubuntu 9.10 and then installed Oracle 10 Express and all went fine. I can access oracle on 127.0.0.1:8080/apex address however when I try to access the server on it's external ip address (192.168.1.14) even when I'm on my Ubuntu machine it's failing. I'm new to Linux so I'm sure this should be silly and simple issue but I can't find a way around it. I need this so I can access the oracle server from outside world (other nodes on the network).

Ubuntu :: Disk Corruption After Power Failure?

Jan 14, 2011

While using my computer the other day (I was sending an email) it suddenly turned off. I didn't get any low power warning, but I was running on battery and had my iphone charging from a USB port.

As I didn't think there was low battery, I just turned it back on again. As it was booting I saw the battery light flashing, indicating low power. I went to get the charger, but before I got it, mid boot-up it turned off again.

This seemingly damaged something hard-disk-wise.

Upon turning it on again it dropped into busy box with some message similar to this:

Quote:

No init fount. Try passing init= bootarg.

BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu7) built in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of build in commands

(initramfs)

That's not the actual message (copy pasted from another post) but the message is VERY similar to that.

If I "exit" busy box, I get a load of message about "kernel panic" before it freezes up.

I have booted a live USB (what I am using now). I thought since it wasn't cleanly unmounted, simply mounting and unmounting would do the trick. I was wrong.

Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

[Code].....

I had previously ran e2fsck (after checking it was unmounted) but it wouldn't run also because it was reporting that the device was already mounted, busy, or being exclusively used by a process.

I don't want to do any more for fear of causing further damage.

I am astounded that such damage can be caused so easily!

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Won't Boot After Main Power Failure

Feb 11, 2011

Running 10.10 After a main power failure I can't boot.

It says:
...........
[sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
[sdc] Attached SCSI removable disk
[sdd] Attached SCSI removable disk
[sde] Attached SCSI removable disk
and stops.

I get a (initramfs) prompt and have no idea what to do with it.

Allready tried to install 10.10 again from a CD. But it also hangs immediately when it starts to install. The liveCD feature works OK and I can access the hard disk. I tried to update the initramfs with the liveCD but it says I can't write since I have only "read-only" access. But if I do "sudo nautilus" I have full access to the disk.

Ubuntu :: 10.04: File System Failure After Power Outage

Jun 8, 2010

I recently installed Lynx 10.04 amd64. Twice now, my entire file system has become unusable -- each time after a short power outage (2 seconds).

In the first setup, I had two primary partitions: 1) / that was ext4; 2) /home that was ext4.

In the second setup, I changed the /home to ext3.

Both times, after booting up following the power outage, I received a message saying that "serious errors" were found in /home. But, after several reboots, I was able to login and use the system. Then, some time later, I would started getting "Read Only" messages when trying to write to the file system.

fsck gave the following message: "/home terminated with status 4". I received numerous "I/O error" on sda messages.

My question: Is this vulnerability due to using ext4 or is it related more to something else in Lynx 10.04? Further, what can I do (other than buying a power backup device) to avoid my file system becoming unusable after a power outage?

Ubuntu :: After Power Failure Boots Into Blank Screen

Jun 23, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit, which is installed to a second hard drive on my desktop. Earlier this afternoon, there were two 10 second power outages in my neighborhood. The first caused the system to restart with no effect, but after the second outage Ubuntu no longer boots properly. The problem is this: When I boot, I get to the grub screen. I have tried choosing four different options (the most recent kernel, a slightly older kernel, and the recovery mode of each). For each, kernel begins loading, but at a certain point the input to the monitor dries up, and after a few seconds the monitor enters standby mode. When I boot into recovery mood, the last message I see before the screen goes blank includes "udev starting version 151" followed by three lines that read "assuming [something that I can't read before the screen goes blank]." The computer itself remains on, but I have no way of knowing exactly what it is doing.

There seems to be no hardware damage as I can boat into Vista, and I can also boot into 10.04 from a USB. I've used fsck to check the partitions on my hard drive and the test came up clean for all of them. Since I only installed 10.04 a week ago, I could just copy the handful of useful files I have to my external drive and re-install, but I'd like to get some experience troubleshooting this problem. My first assumption is some kind of problem with the video drivers or GUI.

Ubuntu Networking :: Refresh Network After Power Failure On Laptop?

Apr 24, 2010

have Karmic Coala runing on an IBM thinkpad X.41. Works great. My home network is all ethernet so I have a router , CAT5 cable to laptop.A coupleof times I've had power outages The laptop carries on as it's on battery power. When the power comes back , the router restarts, it reconnects after a few minutes but the laptop doesn't reconnect to the network seamlessly. On some other Linux distro's I've had running /etc/init.d/network restart will refresh everything. On Ubuntu I have /etc/init.d/networks but running restart In the end I needed to reboot the laptop to get the network back on.Perhaps this is a power management issue with the laptop ethernet card i.e losing power powers down the card and it never comes back up properly.

Ubuntu :: Prevent The Sleep State From Being Lost On Power Failure?

May 17, 2010

When I tell the computer to go to sleep and there is a power failure the sleep state is lost. Is there a way to prevent this? I already know about hibernate and I'm using it but sleep is faster and there is no complete loading of the computer (BIOS, Grub and so on) it just goes directly into the desktop. As far as I know the sleep state is done when everything is in RAM and the computer is turned off but the RAM sticks still receive power. Is this true?

P.S. Can this be done with hibernate and SSD drives? As far as I can tell from what I've read it will be the same but with no state loss. Is this true?

I was updating the kernel and left the computer to let it do its business. There was power failure and I don't know if the update completed or if it was in the middle of it. Now if I start the computer, it freezes up at the login screen. I tried to recover from grub, by selecting "Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-21-generic (recovery mode)". There were no prompts for input after this. The recovery screen is not updating anything after:

When I come out of that screen (ctrl-alt-del), the problem repeats.

After a power failure (UPS power button was hit accidentally), I logged into the system via ssh and found that I had lost all data since my last reboot, which was 4 months ago. It was as if I had a perfect snapshot of my machine from 4 months ago. Everything, database files, logs, all report as if the machine had been off for 4 months. Fortunately, I have quality backups of all my data so I am able to recover, but I have never had such a problem before and I cannot figure out what happened.

Ubuntu Installation :: Power Failure During Upgrade To Lynx - Kernel Panic?

May 2, 2010

I learned yesterday that doing a massive upgrade on my system while moving was a BAAAD idea. The upgrade process was going along just fine, it was all downloaded and was actually installing that last time I saw it. I unplugged my laptop to move a bookcase out, and completely forgot to plug it back in. After I got back from moving a load, I found my computer was off. I tried to boot up, and I got an error that kind of freaked me out. It reads as follows:

Code:kernel panic not syncing vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)I'm able to get to grub just fine, and my windows partition loads up just fine, but any of the linux kernels fail similarly when I attempt to load them.I'm sure that I can fix this, I just have no idea how. Probably has something to do with a live cd.

The thing is the place where I stay is prone for power failure. So the modem goes out with the power. It comes back on within a minute when the power is restored but Network Manager doesn't seem to automatically re-establish the connection after it is lost once. I have to manually do it. Hence most of my downloads do not get done.

CentOS 5 :: Failed To Start The X Server After A Power Failure?

Oct 29, 2010

Before to describe my problem I want to say that I searched a lot on the internet and I think I tried all the solutions provided by other users to similar problems.

I've got an IBM xSeries 346 server running CentOS 5.5 with all updates applied with yum.

The video card is an ATI Radeon (lspci says: 01:06.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]).

Everything worked fine until a bad day where there was an environmental power failure and the server crashed.

I turned it on, I manually check the file system, some files went lost and after the reboot the X server didn't start.

After the first boot I had problem with /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit, sbin/multipath.static and /dev/cpu/microcode, I solved them and now the message it shows is:

"Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface) It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?"

I choose OK and it appears an empty log, if I go in /var/log/gdm and I do an ls -al:

total 0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 28 04:44 :0.log.4
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 28 04:44 :0.log.3
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 29 04:52 :0.log.2
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 29 04:52 :0.log.1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 29 04:52 :0.log

So a lot of empty log files.

I press enter on the OK that appears at the bottom of the screen and it says: Would you like to try to configure the X server?

I choose Yes, I enter the root password and appears the following messages:

Couldn't start X server on card 0
Couldn't start X server with old config, trying with a fresh configuration

Then another messages:

Trying to restart the X server, I press enter on OK and it loops the initial message ("Failed to start the X server...)

Software :: RAID5 Fail To Start Array After Power Failure

Apr 23, 2010

I am having a RAID5 with a spare(total 4 disk).then the steps which lead me to a problem:

1. i was doing I/O on the array.
2. i pulled out a drive manually. So the spare drive took care of the failed one and started rebuilding. then
3. in the, mean time i pulled out the power plug of my NAS box.
4. After power up i saw my array was not active(by -D command option of mdadm). then
5. i executed: mdadm --assemble --scan /dev/md0 it gave me

I checked into the linux source and found that bd_claim is a function inside fs/block_dev.c and it failing due to which lock_rdev function (calling bd_claim in md.c) is failing and we are not able to start the array.I don't know why my RAID is not live after power on.

Ubuntu Servers :: Can't Reinstall Mysql-server After Power Failure During Aptitude Safe-upgrade

Jun 2, 2010

A week or so ago I ran an aptitude safe-upgrade and while it was updating mysql I suffered a power-failure. Now, this never really happens in Holland but of course this once it happened at the worst possible time.

I've tried a lot of different things to get mysql working again, but am running into all kinds of problems. First mysql won't shut off properly (it does startup with the computer but I can't connect to it at all) during an aptitude purge. If I kill the process mysql seems to purge properly, but I guess this is not the case because I wasn't able to install it then.

Things seem to have gone a bit more smoothly this time, however:
