Ubuntu :: Can't Access - Repositories Et Al After Changing Countriew

I downloaded Ubuntu last year and was mightily impressed. I'm not really a techy kinda person, but ubuntu was pretty straightforward to install and set up the packages and stuff like soulseek. however since then i moved to thailand and now I live in Myanmar and Thailand...my problem is that although the internet still works, everything else like updates, Synaptic, IRC, Soulseek don't work anymore...i've lived with it for 6 months, but now it's becoming a problem because i would like to download some more software...is there a simple solution to this or does ubuntu simply not cover these areas?

I'm in the midst of updating from my poky old Dell to a newer (3 yr old) HP laptop. I've completed most of the changeover, but I can't seem to add any repositories to Software Sources. When I attempt to enter the APT line into Synaptic, the only button that's clickable is "Cancel." This holds true even if I use sudo to run Synaptic from the command line.
I've also tried editing /etc/apt/sources.list directly, but when I enter the corresponding lines (cut and pasted from my old computer, to eliminate the chance of typos), I get a message that the newly inserted lines are "malformed."
I'm sure I've overlooked something simple, but I've been at this for two days now and I'm getting a bit frustrated (doesn't do much for mental clarity).

I have a Dell Mini running 10.10 dual booted. Accessing internet through a BT Home HUB version 2.problem solved by making the Wireless setting 802.11 B/G, instead of the BT default), now I can not access software repositories. when I try through synaptic to load Icedtea, or Google chrome for example, I get server not found 404. I was previously able to get software.

On Package repositories - openSUSE quite a few useful repositories are listed, however, only for SuSE 11.1 and upwards. Is there a way to access the same repositories for 11.0? (E.g. Contrib, KDE:KDE3 etc.) I remember that in Ubuntu the repositories for outdated versions had been simply moved to a slower server but I could use them just the same even when my version was a few years old. It would be good to have this for OpenSuSE as well. (Especially that the version I'm working on is on my machine at work, so I cannot just upgrade it.)

I just downloaded and installed netinst version debian 6.0.2.1. I've had ubuntu before, and several usb live versions...but I really wanted to learn how linux works, and it was suggested I get debian. I've been unable to get anything accomplished, other than the basic install. Can't get gnome, or xwindows. Seems to me like I need more repositories. Need a Desktop! But mostly, I guess, I need a browser so I can hook up to here!

I tried to get Xterm. Went su, then apt-get install xterm...it's able to 'read' everything, but then no matter *what* I try to install, I get this same answer : E: Unable to locate package xterm
So I research, and it seems like I'm lacking in repositories. Here's my sources.list. I made a backup. I'm having to *type* everything in, on this computer, until I can get a browser working on the linux machine. So if there are typos I have ethernet cable hookup. I know from past experience sometimes this broadcom wireless card can be a problem. For now, I just want *anything* to work, and get some kind of hookup, so I can finish installing. I've reinstalled 3 times, with iso...

I have a problem accessing repositories behind my proxy. Another problem, I have no access for that installation right now, but I do remember what I did.
First, this is fresh install Fedora 13 with KDE. I manually added IP, subnet mask, DNS, to network manager. Then, manually added proxy settings to SystemSettings/ NetworkSettings/ Proxy. After that,

Now I can, for example, yum install wine, but yum install unrar fails totally (not found), and yum install mc (midnight commander) shows error, where I can copy address or rpm, and make localinstall then.

Trying to use Yast2, and it gives errors: " can't access installation media [url] " and this is with all the repositories that used to work fine. Not sure what it could be? I tried to use a mirror, and I got the same results.
Does Yast2 use a port other than port 80 to connect to the repositories? I have not updated the firewall since using Yast last. Have the repository servers been updated since the release of 11.3, to make some editing of the repositories in Yast necessary?

I've tried to install FEdora 15 using the Fedora 15 DVD for i686 architecture. However, after the step where I chose the setup for GRUB boot options, I got this error: "Some of your repositories require network access but networking could not be setup" (or something similar). Then I only had the option to exit the installer, but after reboot there was no GRUB and I have no means even to boot back to Windows.
How to install Fedora without networking or is Fedora the only distro so messed up that this can't be done? I've tried the Live CD/USB version but that version has no C compiler to allow me to install networking drivers after install completes. Now I was told to try the full DVD, by the full DVD managed to mess up my computer completely.

I am running Suse 11.1 64bit, with KDE, recently I received a pop up on my screen, "something about update problems", I used Yast 2 and selected online Update and it couldn't find updates for Nvidia and froze at that point. I dis-enabled that repository and refreshed all of the remaining Repositories individually and it seemed to work. I then went to the repositories listing and selected "Add" and selected "community" repositories and received the following: WARNING Unable to download list of repositories or no repositories defined. What is my problem? How do I acquire the list of community repositories? I can live with out the Nvidia repository for now but would eventually like to get it back.

I am trying to modify the file access time in a Python routine I have. I have I believe the correct code for this but have a greater issue. Looking at a random file in my home directory I can see it was last accessed yesterday (I didn't open this file yesterday) so it was presumably my virus scan. No problem there Now I have opened the file today,rescanned the file for viruses and read the file in Python and the file access time remains the same!I have checked the access time by right clicking on the file and choosing Properties, using "ls -lu", and using os.stat(path) in Python.

I am using cygwin in order to test a bash script that uses the ls -R command. When I use this, the access date of the subfolders are changed, and I need them to remain what they were before the command was run. I don't have access to a legitimate Linux system, so I'm not sure if this is the fault of cygwin or the ls command. The script is being used to find the last access date of all files underneath several subfolders and then return the latest date found in each subfolder as the last access date for that subfolder. For some reason, some of these folders have files in them that are newer than the folder's last access date, so the script is meant to give us a list of the true last access date for these folders.

I am running 10.10 from a Dell Mini via BT Home Hub version 2. Having recently solved an internet problem by stepping the wireless interface back a notch, I wanted to install various bits of software, but simply can not access software repositories, getting message "404 No Server" or something similar. I have several directories, each owned by root and a group of the same name,By setting the sgid bit, I made sure that newly created files and directories are owned by the correct group, and that directories have the sgid bit set too.On each newly created directory or file, the permissions are set to 755. This is because this is the default umask, and I cannot change a users umask. I actually only want files created below a particular directory to have group write access, inheriting this behaviour to newly created directories properly.I'm not on samba or NFS, I have to do this for SSH users.The filesystem is ext3.I started to fool around with ACLs, but couldn't find what I was looking for.

So yea, why are there so many repositories for the same source (playdeb for example) that specify lucid from maverick or karmic? Why doesn't the repository work on Lucid if it's a repository for Maverick? A big question is why I can't get access to playdeb's stuff on a Lubuntu installation.

I get this when I do gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

If you open up the graphical "Software sources" and go to the tab "Other Software" 10 repos are listed. However these repos are not listed in /etc/apt/sources.list. So where are these lines stored if not there (where I expected them to be).

I recently saw a ..... vid where a guy had a very cool dockbar on some linux distro, he didn't say which. It was much like windows 7's dockbar (lower taskbar on the desktop) and it looked really freakin cool. I'm suffering from an issue of RabbitVCS. I need to follow a big SVN respority, which has about ~20k files (or more), and when I click on the folder, nautilus just freezes for a while because of RabbitVCS. I'm using ubuntu 10.10 x64, using the very last RabbitVCS froum launchpad, and I've 4gb of ram so memory should not be an issue I guess. Is there an good alternative SVN browser except KdeSVN and RapidSVN?
