Ubuntu Installation :: Sun Java 6 Isn't In Any Of Standard Repositories

Jun 16, 2011

For some reason Sun Java 6 isn't in any of the standard repositories. Some sites recommend adding the old Maverick repositories to install it. I just know that adding an old repository is going to break something. Does anyone know when it will be in the standard repositories?

Software :: CentOS And Non-standard Repositories

May 6, 2011

I haven't tried CentOS in a log time, but CentOS 6 is coming out in a while, so I thought about trying it again. I'm using Fedora now and I like it, but I'm still reinstalling at least once a year. I'd like to get to the point where I can just sit on CentOS and update to reasonably up-to-date software without having to go through the trouble of compiling, etc.

So, I'm getting ready to install CentOS 5.6 in a virtual machine to play with. What repositories should I install and which ones are compatible? I'm using RPM Fusion now with Fedora with a handful of others for specific software not available in RPM Fusion.

OpenSUSE :: Difference Between "standard" And "11.4" Kernel Repositories?

Apr 13, 2011

Search for kernel shows "standard" repository, but there is repository for 11.4 too. What is the difference between them? Is it OK to update to 38 Kernel from stable-standard or I should better wait when 38th kernel will be moved from HEAD to stable-11.4 repository?PS: I know it works, I tested it on VirtualBox installation, but I am perfectionist and I want to go with "recommended" option, not "just works".

OpenSUSE :: WARNING - Unable To Download List Of Repositories Or No Repositories Defined

Feb 9, 2011

I am running Suse 11.1 64bit, with KDE, recently I received a pop up on my screen, "something about update problems", I used Yast 2 and selected online Update and it couldn't find updates for Nvidia and froze at that point. I dis-enabled that repository and refreshed all of the remaining Repositories individually and it seemed to work. I then went to the repositories listing and selected "Add" and selected "community" repositories and received the following: WARNING Unable to download list of repositories or no repositories defined. What is my problem? How do I acquire the list of community repositories? I can live with out the Nvidia repository for now but would eventually like to get it back.

Ubuntu :: Standard Services Do Not Start At Boot?

Feb 17, 2010

I've been running Ubuntu 9.10 since November '09, and since a month or so I'm having boot problems. Gnome starts, but some core services such as ssh and dnsmasq (that have started on boot somewhere in time), don't start anymore. Neither does rc.local fire, so I basically have to startup these things by hand.

Also, I cannot get into the console anymore by using ctrl+alt+f*, because it gives a message like: Starting ntpd or starting libgcrypt 1.4.4, or something in that fashion.

My belief is that something is holding the boot procedure in a waiting state before services such as ssh get to start, but I can't seem to find anything in the log files.

Ubuntu :: Internet Connection Sharing - Not The Standard

Jan 8, 2011

So - i got it to work - ish.

first of all the hardware that's involved:

2 wireless cards

The goal is: using a monospace font

Code:

I hope this diagram shows my intentions, how i may have an internet connection via phone or wlan1 share it with eth0 and wlan0

Anyway as i said, i have done _some_ of this, this is where i get stuck i did this (while as SU)

Code:

I then configured dnsmasq using the settings on that page

I then plugged my laptop into the switch and tried to connect- IT WORKED I then plugged my computer into the switch - IT DIDN'T xbox 360 didn't work.

But the laptop still did

I used firestarter along side this setup to see connections, nothing was blocked (bar dns which i unblocked) and my laptop still worked after

The xbox wasn't able to get an IP adress, the laptop did (192.168.254.246)
nor was the computer

I can give more data on request, but.... after i restarted nothing worked, i did the settings again, nothing worked, eth0 was never ready, and you can't connect it to the switch. i'm new to networking; i'd call myself an adept novice regarding linux itself, and all computers can be assumed to be using ubuntu 10.10

Ubuntu :: Standard DVD's And Video Files Don't Play Well

Jun 11, 2011

Just recently converted and I'm running both Ubuntu 11.04 (the Natty Narwhal?) (about 10 gig partitioned) and Windows Vista.

As said in the title, All DVD's and Video files won't play well: DVD's are pixelated most times, jumpy and sometimes the sound is scratchy - sound usually sorts itself out in a minute or so, but not always and similarly with any video files, like MP4s and other ripped files. I usually use VLC but others also don't work well or not at all. When playing MP4's do work it usually freezes the rest of the computer and I have to force switch off by the main switch as nothing works.

I've tried out tips like the following from users with previous problems on Ubuntu forums but still nothing seems to work:
I've installed libdvdcss2 and the latest vlc. I've uninstalled all my players and reinstalled them.

I don't believe it's a restricted format problem as the DVD drive works fine in vista as does all the video files.

I wondered if perhaps my system specs aren't good enough for Ubuntu: intel(r) celeron(r) d cpu 220@1.2ghz 1.5ghz 2 gigs ram 32 bit operating system
I drew this while on vista - when I tried to check my system specs using these commands on Ubuntu the "commands were not found": sudo ishw -html > mySpecs.html and sudo 1shw

Ubuntu :: Can't Convert Standard 9.10 Desktop Into Netbook Remix?

Feb 17, 2010

I have been trying to convert my standard 9.10 desktop installation into the Netbook Remix version.I assumed that all I had to do was add Netbook Remix Launcher from synaptic and set it run at startupAccording to the Wiki these are the packages that constitute the UNR:Desktop Switcher - Allows the user to switch between two desktop modes. Currently supports switching between Ubuntu Netbook Remix mode and "Classic Ubuntu" (two panels, gnome-like) mode.

Go Home Applet - A gnome-panel applet that, when clicked upon, displays the desktop. Used in a netbook-based desktop, the desktop-window will normally be the launcher. Go Home Applet also works in conjunction with the netbook-remix-launcher whereby dragging and dropping a file/url/application to the go-home-applet will automatically add it to the launcher's favorites section. Human Netbook Theme - A gtk theme for use with Ubuntu Netbook Remix Maximus - A desktop daemon which will automatically maximise and, optionally, un-decorate windows. Has support for exclusion lists and will work with any EWMH-spec compliant window-manager.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix Launcher - An easy-to-useprogram/places/favourites launcher which resides on the desktop, replacing the main-menu. indow Picker Applet - A gnome-panel applet that displays open windows as icons on the panel, and has integrated window title-bar functionality. Optimised for use on netbook-size screensNone of them seem like dependencies for the Ubuntu Netbook Remix Launcher itself, so I cant understand why it isnt working. Ive turned of compiz and disabled AWN.

Ubuntu :: Gnome Apps Ignoring Standard Printer?

Jun 8, 2010

Whenever I want to print a document from within a Gnome application (e.g. Evince, Evolution, etc.) the printing dialogue has the wrong printer selected. I'm in a network that has multiple printers connected, and one of them I set as "standard" in system-config-printer. This is working fine in programs like OpenOffice. Whenever I want to print something here, the printing dialogue has the standard printer selected. Not so for Gnome applications, here the (different) dialogue always has another printer selected (always the same one by the way). Now I can print just fine, but it's annoying having to choose the right printer everytime.

Ubuntu :: Set Gconf Values For Standard User From Root?

Jul 13, 2010

I have a script that runs lots and lots of root commands, copying files in /usr/...stuff like that, then i want to switch users back to the original user and run some gconf tweaks, I need to update a series of gconf values for a user after copying all the root files, but I noticed once your in root, any gconf values you change, change roots information, not the user who started the script useing sudo.

So i was wondering how you would run a script as root, then after your done with all the root commands, "un-root" to the current user who started the script and run the gconf edits:

I put together this so far. It a script that you run, it detects if it was started as root and if not it asks for root password and re-spawns its self exiting out the first instance, then the script runs, switches to the original user after all files are copyed over and starts to run the Military Time custom format update.

Code:
OUSER="`whoami`"
if [ "$(id -u)" != "0" ]; then
sudo -K
sudo bash $0

Ubuntu :: SSH Tunnelling Does Not Work With Putty But Works With Standard Ssh

Jan 3, 2011

Today I tried using PuTTY to set up a socks proxy on my local machine, a procedure I used to do when I was not using Ubuntu which used to work flawlessly and out of the box... however, apparently putty is not able to set up a port on my PC, but if I use ssh -Dport, everything works smoothly. Again, this used to work out of the box on other distros... any hints?

P.S.: This is the third problem I'm having with standard operations in Ubuntu: pinentry-qt4 does not work, the scanner needs manual setting to permissions, now this... isn't this distribution supposed to be user friendly? I'm resorting to the terminal more than I ever did.
