Ubuntu Networking :: CIFS VFS No Response For Cmd 50 Using 9.10 Karmic Koala

Feb 2, 2010

I was also having a problem with the Shutdown / Reboot sequence taking ages due to using WiFi, WPA2 and mounting SMB shares. I wasted about 4 hours digging around before I finally realised that the solution involved Upstart. 1. Open a terminal and enter:

Code: sudo gedit /etc/init/network-manager.conf 2. Just below the description line add the following:

Code:
pre-stop script
/etc/init.d/umountnfs.sh
end script

3. Save the script and attempt a restart. I don't know if this will work for everyone, or even what version of Upstart you need for it to work, but it cuts my shutdown time from about 2 mins to about 30 seconds.

Note: This has been working for me about 90% of the time. Occasionally though I see that the script ends prematurely due to the TERM signal and I end up with the 2 minute wait again. I've added the following to the /etc/init/network-manager.conf file:

Ubuntu :: Major CIFS Errors When Accessing Shares Etc In 10.04 - No Response For Cmd 50 Mid 34703

May 1, 2010

Since upgrading to 10.04 I have had constant CIFS errors in /var/log/syslog

Eg -
May 1 10:33:46 eclair kernel: [ 933.789217] CIFS VFS: No response for cmd 50 mid 32895
May 1 10:33:46 eclair kernel: [ 933.794567] CIFS VFS: No response for cmd 50 mid 32900
May 1 10:33:48 eclair kernel: [ 935.721371] CIFS VFS: No response to cmd 46 mid 37294

[code]....

All shares mount and I can open them etc, but always those errors appear whenever I try and browse to it, read them etc. These shares are mount from a Windows 2003 Server and no other machine has a problem reading or writing to this machine. I have changed the network cable and network cards in both machines, with no success. If I copy a file from a local drive to a CIFS drive, the file on the CIFS drive becomes corrupted.

Ubuntu Installation :: Alt-F2 No Response

May 20, 2011

I upgraded to Firefox 4.0.1 (which took a ton of effort, though it'd take five seconds if I had to do it again).Today I fixed the link in the toolbar to open up the new version instead of the old version, by replacing the Firefox folder in the usr/lib folder, and specifying the location and name in the properties of the icon.I realized that somehow I messed up something, and Alt-F2: "firefox" no longer runs firefox. Any ideas about how Alt-F2 works? I'm guessing it's a /bin, but experiments injecting Firefox into /bin's hasn't worked.

Ubuntu :: Very Slow Response - How To Troubleshoot?

Jan 11, 2010

My Kubuntu installation (9.10) boots up normally and seems to run fine, other than it is very slow to respond to inputs or change screens/ applications etc. It can take 5-10 seconds to respond to simple requests like changing from firefox to dolphin by clicking in the taskbar. It is dual boot with XP, which also seems sluggish, but is bearable.

The computer is barely useable in Kubuntu because of the slow response. I had 9.04 installed before, same problem. I tried searching for drivers for the on board video, thinking that might be it, but came up empty.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 9.10 - No Response From Flash

Mar 11, 2010

When I go to, say ..... or even speedtest.net the flash there is almost unusable. Mouse over interaction works perfectly. However, when you click on something (say a play button) its a complete crapshoot. Sometimes it works, some times you have to click dozens (often more) of times before it will respond. I had an older install of 9.10 (granted it was a while ago and I believe it was 32bit) and I don't ever remember having this issue and I just removed an openSUSE install that I know didn't have this issue. So far my only attempts to fix this would be the remove --purge of the restricted extras pack and reinstalling it. I have also tried installing flash through the Software Center. This particular issue exists in both Firefox and Chrome and I'm not too sure what to make of it. On boot, for some reason, my main volume is always turned all the way down and muted.

I restarted my computer and everything seems fine. If it is important to know what the computer was doing before it crashed, it was converting a mkv movie to avi. I have intel integrated 82945GC, using kernel i915.The web search says it might be an x problem, but then after going to their recommended website x.org, I couldn't find anything to relate to this problem.

This is in my /etc/auto.master
Code:

Ubuntu :: Capturing Command Output Response

Aug 5, 2011

I run a 3rd party command line utility and it works fine, but sometimes it says "Error blah blah blah... Connection timed out"

I want to script this utility, but I need to not execute the commands in the script if it gives me that connection timeout error.

bash code to capture that response from the utility? Something along the lines of:

Quote:

#!/bin/bash
3rdpartyutil > /tmp/temp.txt
if [ ! -f /tmp/temp.txt]; then
echo no error, run whatever you need to man
fi
rm /tmp/temp.txt

Unfortunately, that doesn't work because the utility outputs non-error information to the screen even when it is successful, so it always outputs something, I never need to see it, but I do need to be able to act upon if some of that text says "error" or "connection timed out"

Ubuntu :: CIFS Share No Longer Following Symlinks

Jun 6, 2010

I just made the upgrade to 10.04 over the weekend, and everything seems to be working fine, minus one nagging detail.I have a Mythbuntu setup - a frontend and a backend. In addition to recording television, I have a folder setup on my backend where I can dump movie files to watch on the frontend. The folder is shared in the /etc/fstab via a CIFS share. Within that folder is a symlink to where my torrent folder is located. The issues seems to be how my frontend handles symlinks within the shared folders. If I run "ls -la" in my base CIFS share folder, it lists the symlink folder and says it's owned by root, but if I try and change to that directory - either using "ls" or "cd" - it says Permission Denied. On the backend, I changed ownership of the symlink to the username the CIFS is using to login, but that had no effect. I'm not familiar with how to do any sort of configuration on CIFS, if that's where I'd even need to start.

Ubuntu Networking :: IRC Channels - Benefits Of NFS Over CIFS?

May 14, 2011

I was asking around in some IRC channels earlier trying to develop some thoughts on how NFS is better than CIFS. I set up a FreeNAS file server, and that's where all of my data now resides on a pair of raided drives. That way my main desktop, which is kind of a power hog gaming rig, can be powered off since I pretty much live on my laptop now. Anyway, I began to tinker with CIFS and NFS. Since some family members in the household use Windows, I definitely need CIFS. But I wanted to bounce back to NFS too and check it out.

While I do think it's nice I don't have to worry about authentication to the NAS box when using NFS, it's still a little scary. Being that it's more of a trust method instead of actual authentication, truthfully all a user needs to get into your data is the path to your NFS share and a matching UID. I mean, am I wrong by saying this? Sure, it may seem like NFS is convenient, but this angle of it is a little scary. I just don't feel like that screams "secure."

On the flip side, you have CIFS, which uses a user authentication level. So I hit my little shortcut to my NAS and it asks me who I am. I log in and bam, I have connection. I can browse other folders on the share, etc. This is convenient because I do have a "public" share on here with a generic user. That way if friends come over and want to transfer something to me, I have them drop it in the public share and I later transfer it accordingly. Since there is a user level authentication, this to me seems a little more secure.

Speed wise I was a little concerned, as some users have said NFS is faster than CIFS. Well, they might be right. But I did a few bench tests here on my laptop, using the same exact share except one with CIFS one with NFS. I stayed in the exact same location and transferred the same 300mb file in each instance.

NFS - 1.7mb/s
CIFS - 1.5/mb/s

Not exactly enough to warrant a huge argument over, so I leave that argument along the road to be forgot about since it doesn't really have any bearing on this situation. I like things about both NFS and CIFS. I just want to know why is it "not optimal" to use a full blown CIFS setup even if you're using 100% Linux systems.

Ubuntu :: Cannot View CIFS Share \ But Can In Windows?

May 19, 2011

I have a FreeNAS server running CIFS shares. I just tried out Deja Dup on my home directory and backed it up to my CIFS share. This is about 200gb worth or so, I believe. After it was done, I went to browse into the directory. I've restarted the CIFS service on the server, rebooted the server, and rebooted Ubuntu,I STILL cannot browse my directory. It says:Sorry, could not display all the contents of "jason": Invalid argument.Yet I can SSH into it and do an ls listing and see all of the .tar.gz packages that Deja Dup created. Likewise, I can browse to it just fine in Windows. What is Ubuntu doing that it doesn't like to see these files? It's a huge, huge pain in the rear... How can I fix it?

Before the update, everything was fine. But the first time I loaded my computer up after the restart for the update to come into effect I was hit with a problem. When the system loads up and logs in I'm met with a prompt asking me to "enter password for keyring 'default' to unlock." That is nothing new, I've always had that come up, but for some reason now when that appears I can't type in my password or click on anything whatsoever. I have control over my cursor and can move it by moving my mouse, but when attempting to click cancel, ok, or the password box or anything else there is no response. Because I can't get passed this prompt, I obviously cannot do anything on my computer.

Ubuntu Networking :: Slow Response For HTTP Proxy Over SSH?

Dec 3, 2010

I'm a little stumped on this one so I reaching out to see if anyone here has any idea. I just changed my ISP to Surewest as they're doing fiber straight to the house in my area so I have 8Mbps up and down.

I have my linux box running openssh and I have no problems SSHing into it from my remote laptop at work. I use putty to connect to it and create a tunnel so I can configure my firefox to use it as a SOCKS proxy. The problem is my response time for page loads in firefox is atrocious now. It'll take over a minute to load yahoo.com. The only real differences in my setup now are my ISP and router hardware at home. Previously, I was using the firewall that was built into my AT&T Uverse gateway. Now, I'm using my old Linksys WRT54G v5.0 router with the latest firmware. My linux box is wired directly into it with ethernet. When I run the speed tests from that box I get my correct speeds of 8Mbps up and down with <15ms ping. From what I can tell, all of my router settings are correct.

Ubuntu Installation :: Msttcorefonts Errant License Response

Feb 5, 2011

Over the last week or so I ran into a problem that was caused by a mix of justifiable frustration with an Ubuntu distribution upgrade in combination with, well let's just be blunt about it: a dimly lit candle upstairs. Ubuntu decided that it was going to download 50 megabytes of font packages whether I wanted it to or not, so, when I came back to find the license requester waiting for my response, I thought it was referring to those fonts that I told it not to download, but which it downloaded anyway (steam, steam, steam!), so I rejected the license. Instead, it was referring to the MScoreFonts package (which I DID want). Upon discovering what I had done, I found out that, using the Software Center, I could download those packages all I wanted to and they would NEVER install properly because I would never again get re-presented with the option of accepting the license. Instead, I am simply reminded over and over again that I have rejected the license. Apparently, Software Center is a tad unforgiving of stupid mistakes.

The answer, my friends, is not blowing in the wind, but is contained in a readme file that gets left where the fonts would have been installed. To save you a little bit of time, here is what you need to do to get those fonts installed: Open a terminal and enter the following quoted command (without the quotes, of course): "sudo apt-get install --reinstall ttf-mscorefonts-installer" This will present you with a text-based requester to use the arrow keys to highlight the "<ok>" at the bottom and hit return, thus accepting the license. From this point the install should go smoothly. Regarding the frustration mentioned above: I am not Japanese; I don't know any Japanese; and no Japanese is going to be using my systems, so, no, I do NOT need that 50 megabyte Japanese font.
