As a administartor I can do ls on root, but when I cd to /media ls does not work - blank respoonse. I have to sign in GUI file manager and authenticate to make ls work. Do I need to be at root?

I restarted my computer and everything seems fine. If it is important to know what the computer was doing before it crashed, it was converting a mkv movie to avi. I have intel integrated 82945GC, using kernel i915.The web search says it might be an x problem, but then after going to their recommended website x.org, I couldn't find anything to relate to this problem.

I've used dvd+rw-format -format=full /dev/sr0 and K3B to format a blank DVD RW.I reinsert the disk and it's not seen or auto-mounted as writeable media. In the past, I've written one file to a blank DVD RW in Windows XP, insert the disk back into Linux and I can use Dolphin to read and write to the disk as though it had been auto mounted as a removable storage media device in KDE4.Is there a solution to use a blank DVD RW as an easily accessible, writeable media in Linux?

Another problem is that brasero leaves the locked drawer of the unit for a few minutes after erase dvd-rw media. Is there any solution to these two problems?

PS3 Media Server don't work It doesn't detect the PS3 correctly and on the PS3 side it just keeps saying "data corrupted" for every video I try to play. It used to work perfectly on 10.04.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI decided to try kubuntu after reading over the webs. I got lastest 10.04 release of kubuntu installed (downloaded yesterday).
So far i dont seem to get any mediaplayer to work correctly with video files (avi's and Video_ts.ifo's). I've tried:
- built in Dragon
- Vlc
- mplayer and kmplayer/smplayer
- xine
The result is as follows
- Dragon plays only Dvd's "vob" files but cannot switch audio or subtitles
- vlc wont open ANYTHING at all
- mplayer crashes on anything as well
- xine will play some videos as dragon but wont play vob files (no "muxer")
At first i installed recommended stuff to play mp3's. When i tried to watch films or dvd's i couldnt do it with Dragon so i tried to install so advertised VLC. I did, and when i open ANY file in VLC, it closes itself. Just closes. Or on rare occasions (when opening some of dvd's files) it just opens a big black screen and reverts to starting small state w/o screen or file opened. I can even sometimes see the first picture from the video blink before it closes. I couldnt get ANY file to play on VLC not even an mp3...
I then installed some packages that told they contain codecs to play alot of formats, and package for "encoded dvd's" - nothing.
After that i've seen that now i can play some videos (avi's and stuff) and even DVD's with built in Dragon video player, but dragon cannot understand subtitles or different audio streams. I tried mplayer and Xine with no luck as well.
Now since its not a problem of one player, but i cannot get to play video_ts.ifo files at all and cannot get vlc and mplayer to play anything at all, there must be something i am doing wrong.
I have download Ubuntu 10.04 several times and burned on a number of different PC under Win XP with the same results. When using the Live Cd option it requests a login user name and password of which all I have tried do not work. This is a ISO burned to cd not a HD install. So. what is that password? blank blank does not work.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a logitech dinovo wireless keyboard with those extra multimedia keys on it like Volume Up, Volume Down, and Mute. They didn't do anything so I installed KeyTouch. I was able to select my keyboard from the list in KeyTouch, and if everything was working right then at that point all my extra keys would work. But they still didn't do anything. So I went into the Keytouch editor to make my own custom profile. You click add to add a new key and then it asks you to press a key. So I press the key (Mute) and it recognizes it, and then you select what action you want it to do. I did this for Mute, Volume Up and Volume Down. But yet they still don't work!
Now obviously it detects my key presses (keycode) just fine when I added the new key. So it should do the assigned action when I press that key. What I *want* it to do is mute or change the volume of the Headphones. But as I said that wasn't working at all for some reason. So to narrow it down I instead set the Mute key to simply launch firefox. But it still doesn't work. So there is some disconnect... in the keytouch editor it's detecting the key just fine, but afterwards when you press Mute it doesn't do the action it's supposed to.
I wanted to try out Aqualung, and I like the program, but with one big drawback: the media keys at the top of my keyboard don't work with it. Is there something that needs to be done to enable those keys, or is this a bug with the program or my computer?

View 3 Replies View Relatedi had an nvidia geforce 6800 card in my pc and that just all of a sudden stopped working (the screen went blank) so i went to my onboard video and it works but no matter what video card i install, it doesn't work (still a black screen) and i know the cards work on other pc's but just not this one. i've tried different ati cards and nvidia cards with no luck. i've also wanted to disable my onboard card all together but my bios doesn't have that option for some reason. i also thought that it might be the slot but when i install the video card in the pc, the fan works so it's not that.

I tried so many times to configure vlc on fedora 11 . But all are failed things that tried are listed below:
Yum install vlc error-> no package found
Downloaded rpm for vlc and try to install but dependency errors
Downloaded mplyer and try to compile but ended with errors, compile with various combinations of parameters but errors are still there.
vlc media player seemed having trouble opening bigger files, say more than 400MB. And it would openavi files.

I was upgrade my PC's RAM to 4GiB on 32bit platform, the problem is when I set AGP appture size to 64 MiB suse was detect physical memory at 3.4 GiB but when I set AGP appture size to 32 MiB or lower physical memory was detected at 3.6 GiB but I can only boot with failsafe mode, desktop mode doesn't work and screen goes to blank and I want to use the whole 3.6 GiB.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just got unbuntu server edition installed on my server along with openssh-server. Now I am trying to set ssh so I can log in with a key authentication. I am using this guide to do it through putty on my windows machine. [URL]. After I installed ssh I logged in correctly. I then proceed to generate a key in putty. Now my problem starts when i try and put that key onto my server.
The tutorial says to type in
mkdir .ssh
My server says it cannot make that directive because it is already created. So I proceed to the next line. I believe this code sets permissions?
chmod 700 ~/.shh
Nothing happens just goes to a new line
Then I did this
cd .ssh
nano -w authorization_key
then I copied and pasted the key I got from putty gen into this file pressed ctrl o and then ctrl x
When I try logging into my server using the key auth it simply asks for my login, once it is input it says authorization invalid then ask for my password.
Every now and then a window titled 'authorization dialog' pops up. It says "you need to supply a username and a password to access this site". Please view the screenshot of that window in the attachments. Even if I cancel it, the program seeking it seems not to terminate. It returns repeatedly...in every log in also. I am pretty irritated.how to terminate this appending agony.
View 5 Replies View RelatedNormally when you have a partition that isn't mounted, when you try to mount it, it asks you for the root password.
I have two partitions. One that I wanted mounted at boot, one that I wanted you to have to know the root password to mount. In the process of trying to setup that one partition to automount at boot, I accidentally changed something (through Pysdm) that made it so the other partition no longer displays that root password verification screen. Now all it does is give me an error saying I have to be root. How can I restore that screen?

Before I submit a bug, I wanted to see if anyone can tell me why this happens. When I first start using UO, it requested that I add my computer to my UO account. I entered the name of my machine, ie. "desktop-name". Once I did that, the music store worked properly, and I was able to use the Evolution Contacts sync and regular files in the ~/UbuntuOne folder. These all showed up in my web interface.
Now, when I set up Tomboy to sync with UO (Tomboy Web), it sends me to the Confirm Computer Access page again, asking me to put in my device name again. So I enter again "desktop-name" and it logs in and Tomboy syncs. The problem is that two devices now show up under Machines, and also under System > Preferences > UbuntuOne > Devices. I've tried deleting both devices, and starting from scratch as described here but it always does the same thing.
Is there a reason I must have two devices listed when I'm on the same system? Has anyone else noticed this? FWIW, each confirmation request lists a different token, it just seems that once I have authorized my system, that all the sync connections should auth under the same credentials.
My 2wire only allows HTTP/HTTPS access and this is my home office network.

I'm having issues with the gnome-packagekit not working as a user. It runs fine as root but I don't want to have to login each time to run it.
The gnome-packagekit used to ask for root password but has stopped doing so. Anyone remember or have a fix for this?
The cancel button does not work either, I need to close with the X for the window...
It now gives this error.. Authorization Failed You have failed to provide correct authentication
