Ubuntu Installation :: USB Not Working - No Response From Any Devices That Plug In
Mar 9, 2010
I had XP before, which gave me an error message and crashed. I didn't have the XP CD so I decided to give Linux an error. By what i can find, I have a somewhat unique problem. My USB drives no longer work. They light up green, so they obviously have some power and so on, but there is no response from any devices that you plug in, i.e. mouse, flash drives, etc. Nothing works.
I've never owned an external SATA device, so I'm curious whether these devices are hotpluggable in Fedora. Some computer cases and case inserts have an external SATA connector that plugs into the motherbords built-in SATA connectors and extends the connection so it reaches outside the case. But can you plug and unplug SATA devices just as you do USB devices?
I searched alot & tried installing flash plug-in but none has yet solved the problem. it's currently installed but doesn't work in opera & firefox. Moreover I tried removing it & re-intalling it with yum & rpm but the problem persists.
My mouse isn't working when I plug it in, it's a USB Logitech Wireless Mouse and it doesn't work unless I boot with it plugged in then it stops working eventually.
I'm running a 64-bit version of Ubuntu 10.04 and have the flash plug-in installed. It runs fine for the most part but if I'm watching a ..... video or playing a game on facebook and accidentally hit the right mouse button, rather than pull up a menu like it does on my netbook (running Ubuntu 10.1 32-bit), it crashes Firefox.
Herein lies my problem: the black cable output is not working. I have a 50' extension cable from the black jack to my receiver for my speakers in the living room and also wired to my deck. The jack works in Windoze but not with Ubuntu. I'm wondering if it's a configuration issue that escapes me.
I've just installed a nas on my system. All is ok apart from Kaffeine. It will play the file from the home dir, a usb disc but not for some reason the same file over the network located on a nas. It come up with the following error message:
The connection was configured as a MS Windoze network drive.via dolphin. No problems with compressed, pdf or doc files or copying etc just playing an avi with kaffeine.
when I try to access any page even small html pages it stays like 3 seconds in HTTP request sent; waiting for response. state..even when I use Lynx locally on the server..bypassing any possible network issues..logs dont show a thing..the server itself is a high end server with nothing running on it apart from apache which is not serving anny clients now, firewall is disabled and hostnamelookups are set to OFF.
I'm installing slack 13.0 in a Dell 2350 for a friend. once installed, it works ok for a while then within some somewhat random period of time, just plain locks up. the keyboard stops working, the mouse cursor still moves, but there is no response from mouse clicks. i was ssh'ed into the machine one of these times to see if i could read the logs during a lockup. the machine stopped responding to the ssh session as well (actually i had an instance of mc running at the time, and the machine still responded to it. when i exited mc, i was stuck in console never-never land). the logs show absolutely nothing. /etc/messages keeps showing MARK long after the lockup. all other logs are not updated since boot. this machine has an i810 chipset, is there a driver issue here?
I recently tried to plug in a second monitor to my graphics card in an attempt to mess around with a dual monitor set up. This created a duplicate effect (which I expected at first) but downgraded my original monitor to the second monitors max resolution. Now my xorg.conf appears to be blank and I dont believe my fglrx drivers are working anymore.
When I try to start compiz from bash I get the following:
Code:
When I attempt fglrxinfo:
Code:
I'm running Kubuntu, Karmic AMD64 ATI Radion x1350
What could have happened? All I did was plug in a second monitor and restart!
I upgraded to Firefox 4.0.1 (which took a ton of effort, though it'd take five seconds if I had to do it again).Today I fixed the link in the toolbar to open up the new version instead of the old version, by replacing the Firefox folder in the usr/lib folder, and specifying the location and name in the properties of the icon.I realized that somehow I messed up something, and Alt-F2: "firefox" no longer runs firefox. Any ideas about how Alt-F2 works? I'm guessing it's a /bin, but experiments injecting Firefox into /bin's hasn't worked.
For some reason my USB devices just stopped working. I'm on my laptop, so I really don't need a USB Mouse but I like to use it. I also can't use my flash drive. The Command lsusb sees it. It will see both the mouse and my flash drive. I don't have any other devices to test, but I would like to know that they would work when I need them. The strange thing is it also used to work. I don't know what changed.
OS version is Ubuntu 10.10.I have Java installed in my machine. But,when it comes to web browser(Firefox) I can't see Java plug-in in the Add ons.Can anyone tell me what's the cause of this issue.
Code: sandy@ubuntu:~$ java -version java version "1.6.0_20" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.9.9) (6b20-1.9.9-0ubuntu1~10.10.2) OpenJDK Server VM (build 19.0-b09, mixed mode) When I go to this web page(http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp) a message appears saying "Something is wrong.Java is not working"
Over the last week or so I ran into a problem that was caused by a mix of justifiable frustration with an Ubuntu distribution upgrade in combination with, well let's just be blunt about it: a dimly lit candle upstairs. Ubuntu decided that it was going to download 50 megabytes of font packages whether I wanted it to or not, so, when I came back to find the license requester waiting for my response, I thought it was referring to those fonts that I told it not to download, but which it downloaded anyway (steam, steam, steam!), so I rejected the license. Instead, it was referring to the MScoreFonts package (which I DID want). Upon discovering what I had done, I found out that, using the Software Center, I could download those packages all I wanted to and they would NEVER install properly because I would never again get re-presented with the option of accepting the license. Instead, I am simply reminded over and over again that I have rejected the license. Apparently, Software Center is a tad unforgiving of stupid mistakes.
The answer, my friends, is not blowing in the wind, but is contained in a readme file that gets left where the fonts would have been installed. To save you a little bit of time, here is what you need to do to get those fonts installed: Open a terminal and enter the following quoted command (without the quotes, of course): "sudo apt-get install --reinstall ttf-mscorefonts-installer" This will present you with a text-based requester to use the arrow keys to highlight the "<ok>" at the bottom and hit return, thus accepting the license. From this point the install should go smoothly. Regarding the frustration mentioned above: I am not Japanese; I don't know any Japanese; and no Japanese is going to be using my systems, so, no, I do NOT need that 50 megabyte Japanese font.
The Firefox 3.6.7 update this morning disabled most of the plug-ins that were installed and working. This has happened a few times and is a real problem for those of us who depend on the plug-ins to perform our work. es, I suppose it would be possible to manually predetermine the compatibility of each plug-in prior to installing an update. But that is very time consuming, painful, and prone to error.
There needs to be a pre-install process that will do those checks and warn the user of any incompatibilities - then allow them to choose whether to install the update. I never have understood why the current "shotgun" approach was chosen. It breaks many things.
I have just installed my ubuntu on my disk.(Windows xp is also there)..Initially i had a lot of problems with the new concept of installation of applications. So far the only successful thing i have installed is " cairo-dock". I have also successfully removed many games by removing the corresponding package files. My latest issue is with vlc plug-in.( i just need a versatile player).I tried installing the package via Synaptic package manager.> i chose: mark for installation.> then i clicked: apply.> it showed: downloading .....but finally it says an error occurred, with the following details:E: Internal Error, Could not perform immediate configuration (2) on mountallAlso at the bottom of synaptic package manager, (in the status bar or whatever..)it is given:31 packages listed,1265 installed,0 broken.103 to install/upgrade,8 to remove; 77.2 MB will be used.( i also wish to say that i found the same error [E: Internal Error, Could not perform immediate configuration (2) on mountall] when installing packages like balzarbrothers, rhtytmbox plug-in.....tell me what to do)
Im running Ubuntu 10.10 and a couple of days ago, my usb sound deviced stopped working, possibly because of a recent update, as I didn't change something on my system as far as I can recall. My internal sound card still works just fine whatsoever, but my external devices,
E-MU 0202 USB Logitech USB Headset
which also used to work flawlessly in the past, don't play audio anymore.Although they are still detected and selectable in the PulseAudio Volume Control.I can exclude hardware problems because everything is fine in WinXP.
I am a perfect linux noob user, i have an ati 5750 card, so when i try to install opensuse 11.3 KDE, i click "install" i see a loading then just a black screen with the monitors led blinking, i had this issue before with kubuntu, but i find on forums that i have to use command : xforcevesa, and it worked, i don"t know similar command for opensuse. i am switching to opensuse cause i had some problems with Kubuntu. note that i tried all options in installation's menu, no acpi, vesa, low resolution......
If I install a regular version of Ubuntu onto a USB drive using my desktop, can i plug the usb into my laptop and it will work normal,no issues having used the laptop desktop to install to the usb. Only reason asking because i can disable the harddrive on my laptop so i just unplug the harddrive in my desktop and install ubuntu like that onto usb,if theres a better method for laptop love to hear it
I just upgraded and hated the left side vertical menu, it's just not my thing.I decided (regrettably) to deselect the Unity plug-in from with the Compiz Settings UI thinking it might get rid of it. It but, but unfortunately it rendered the desktop completely unusable and alll I have now is literally a desktop with no menu's or toolbars of any kind.Although I can login using the 'Classic' option I really think I should fix what I have broken (before reverting to 10.10).Is there any way to re-enable the Unity plugin via command line?I tried entering ccsm via terminal but nothing happens. I also tried entering configcompiz-settings-manager but again, a dead end.
Recently installed Ubuntu. It resurrected a dead machine. While using Miro, I went to a site in Firefox to check on a video downloads. The site said I couldn't play their files and gave me the option of downloading flash. Since Ubuntu was having trouble getting the dependancies together for me to load flash and make it work, I downloaded their offer. Now Miro doesn't recognize any of the available videos to download when I try to access them. How do I reverse the downloads?
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on Hp Mini 110. I can't get Mobile Broadband to work ... whenever I plug a USB device in, nothing is detected and there is no option to connect to mobile broadband. The devices I have tested are;
1. ZTE MF636 2. ZTE MF626 3. Huawei K3565-Z 4. Nokia 5800XM phone in PC Suite Mode (works on my other laptop running Ubuntu 10.04)
I have tried uninstalling with a full purge of USB-Modeswitch and then reinstalling it. This machine is upgraded from 10.04. It wasn't working in 10.04 either.
I am using Ubuntu, now installed KDE (kubuntu) and I have Bluetooth working and enabled but for some strange reason the bluetooth scan is not finding any devices in spite of the fact that I have my mobile phone with bluetooth on and discoverable. My laptop is HP Touchsmart tm2 2102tu. Here's output of my hciconfig -a
All USB devices do not work/initialise, except when I run Ubuntu 10.04 liveUSB (netbook version). The problem arose following upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04, but only manifested after a couple of weeks. I've tried other distros and the problem persists in Fedora 13 which I am now using.
Output of lsusb with a USB memory stick and mouse in the ports is: Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Today I've tried upgrade from F14 to F15 using preupgrade, after reboot,gnome3 can response nothing, but kde and fvwm is ok. how can i do to rescue gnome?
When I installed slackare 13 it detected usb drives and cameras automaticallyow it doesn't. I am runnning a 13.0 system, not current, so I have only applied the updates in that branch (iirc including a new kernel).nowadays when i plug a device in it does not seem to be detected by HAL (i.e not in KDE).However the device is listed if you use the command "lsusb" and the computer obviously knows it has been plugged in as there is a relevant entry in dmesg.Sorry for the generallised nature of the post, but I don't really know anything about HAL or how it can have stopped working
I have problem with several usb devices plugged to laptop HP Envy 17 n120nd, new laptop with Skylake. Because of the Skylake I have Debian Testing installed (instead of Windows, hence no dual boot). The problem is as follows. When I plug an usb device such as memory stick, usb storage and wired mouse, none of them are detected, despite the fact that lights of these devices are on (except the mouse as I will explain later).
But when I reboot the laptop, while the usb devices stay plugged in the laptop, then they usually are detected (hence not always) and works without problem. Except the mouse: after completing the reboot the light of the mouse went off, indicating that there is no power. Replugging the mouse results in power for the mouse and it works like a charm too.
What can be the cause? And, maybe more important. I contacted HP, but they give no support for Linux.
