View 1 RepliesWhen I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, the Byobu terminal was installed. What are the differences between the Byobu terminal and the default terminal(I mean the terminal that is default in 10.10)? Is it more advantageous to use Byobu?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running a small server on a Lubuntu install, and I'd like to have new terminals start in Byobu, or at least screen. However, I can't figure out how to make Byobu start automatically. The built-in "Start Byobu with login" option doesn't seem to do anything, although it does add a line to my ~/.profile. How can I set Byobu as my default shell?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've used screen for a little while and just found out about byobu.I much prefer the byobu keybindings over the C-a nonsense that screen needs. However, I have no need for the byobu status bar, as I have conky running as well, with nice fonts too. I edited my byobu profile and commented out
Code:
# Window tabs, second to last line
# caption always "%12`%?%-Lw%50L>%?%{=r}%n*%f %t%?(%u)%?%{-}%12`%?%+Lw%?%11` %=%12`%110`%109`%122`%111`%10`%
[code]...
as their comments suggest they are the two status lines I do not care for. I'm not sure if it's because of this, but now the screen creation and switching keybinds do not work, even though in the config options for byobu I have it set to use the f-keys keybind set.I can still retitle, detach and pull up the byobu options with f-keys.Additionally, by default I can just scroll up with the scroll wheel, need to enter scrollback mode, which seems strange as their is a keybind for "Scrollback Mode"
I've just done a clean install of 11.4 from a Net install CD. I left it unattended while it installed, and came back to find a blank screen with just an xterm. I've rebooted it, and tried both the normal and the failsafe modes, but I just get the same result. The terminal contains the following:

View 3 Replies View RelatedI do a lot of torrenting on my xubuntu box, and ever since my introduction to computers, I have become attracted to the command-line way of doing things. My default editor is vi, my default torrent programme is rtorrent, my default gopher client is lynx... you get the idea. My web browsing, and sometimes also my file browsing, however, is always in graphical mode.
As you know, downloading a torrent involves downloading a small file with the extension .torrent. When I clicked on this .torrent file, although I have rtorrent installed, Transmission showed up. Not to insult the Transmission guys, but compared to an ncurses-based torrent client, Transmission is just too bloated. Anyhow, I right-clicked on the file, Open With Other Application, etc.
Into the box that showed up, I typed /usr/bin/rtorrent (the path to my favourite torrent client), and clicked OK. I double-clicked on the torrent file again, and nothing. Transmission didn't show up, but neither did my terminal client. I'm sick of having to go to the Applications menu and firing up the Terminal to torrent a file. I'd like to have the Terminal open up with rtorrent as soon as I double click the file.
For my Project purpose , I need the terminal as root user by default. I dont want to enter the super user password all the time..

View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter updating/upgrading my packages this morning, the terminal profile preferences screen (Edit > Profile Preferences) no longer had the option at the bottom for setting the default terminal size. This is a problem because the default size went from the 132x43 I had set it to down to 80x24. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on three machines and had this problem on all of them. After noticing the problem on the first machine, I checked the option screens of the other machines before upgrading. The default size option was there before the upgrades, but after upgrading, it was gone.
Here is the aptitude log from the upgrade:
[UPGRADE] ant 1.7.1-4ubuntu1 -> 1.7.1-4ubuntu1.1
[UPGRADE] ant-gcj 1.7.1-4ubuntu1 -> 1.7.1-4ubuntu1.1
[UPGRADE] ant-optional 1.7.1-4ubuntu1 -> 1.7.1-4ubuntu1.1
[UPGRADE] ant-optional-gcj 1.7.1-4ubuntu1 -> 1.7.1-4ubuntu1.1
[UPGRADE] gnome-terminal 2.29.6-0ubuntu5 -> 2.30.2-0ubuntu1
[UPGRADE] gnome-terminal-data 2.29.6-0ubuntu5 -> 2.30.2-0ubuntu1

[UPGRADE] libphonon4 4:4.6.2-0ubuntu5 -> 4:4.6.2-0ubuntu5.1 .....
It's almost surely gnome-terminal or gnome-terminal-data, but I included the full list just in case. What are my options for fixing this? Should I try rolling back the upgrade? Should I not bother with that and just try setting the default terminal size through other means?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed CentOS 5.2, and would like for xterm to be my default terminal instead of the gnome-terminal. I was able to do this on a RHEL4 system and Fedora 9, but I can't figure out how to do it in CentOS.
Here's the output of uname:

After running an update this morning, my terminal comes up in the install default size. Using the preferences dialog, I cannot find the control to set the default width. Has it been removed? I hope I'm looking in the wrong place, but I have a chilling feeling that it's been dropped or perhaps just accidentally commented out.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI try to change the default character encoding in gnome-terminal. I want to use UTF8, but every gnome-terminal i start uses "ANSIX3.4-1968".
In the menu, when i go in Terminal => Set character encoding i have a list with two items:
[x] Current Locale (ANSIX3.4-1968)
[ ] Unicode (UTF-8)
I don't know why the first item appears, i have another debian box and it has only the UTF-8 encoding available. I cannot remove the first item in "add or remove" sub menu !! Probably because it is related to "current locale"
Here is the output of "locale", if it can helps:

I've set up home server, which doesn't have to be as powerful as other servers, so I decided to install GUI because of applications that are alternatives to classical GUI applications in headless version requires more skill/knowledge. However, I don't want server to run GUI always at start (which gnome-desktop package does). I need some configuration in KDE/gnome/xfce (haven't decided) that doesn't start GUI after each start (e.g is required to type startx or equivalent command to start GUI)(off topic: can you also recommend good remote-administration with GUI transport ?)

1. About 6 of the icons normally residing in the top half of Settings Manager are missing (names are their and functions work). Selecting 'Appearance -> Icons' and re-selecting the one choice available restores one, the rest remain MIA.
2. Default xfce Terminal launch fails with error <????> Re-selecting the default 'Preferred Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal -> Xfce Terminal' has no effect. 'Properties' shows the usual 'exo-open --launch TerminalEmulator'.
Setting 'Preferred Applications' to 'X Terminal' launches an xterm successfully as expected.
