I've used screen for a little while and just found out about byobu.I much prefer the byobu keybindings over the C-a nonsense that screen needs. However, I have no need for the byobu status bar, as I have conky running as well, with nice fonts too. I edited my byobu profile and commented out
Code:
# Window tabs, second to last line
# caption always "%12`%?%-Lw%50L>%?%{=r}%n*%f %t%?(%u)%?%{-}%12`%?%+Lw%?%11` %=%12`%110`%109`%122`%111`%10`%
[code]...
as their comments suggest they are the two status lines I do not care for. I'm not sure if it's because of this, but now the screen creation and switching keybinds do not work, even though in the config options for byobu I have it set to use the f-keys keybind set.I can still retitle, detach and pull up the byobu options with f-keys.Additionally, by default I can just scroll up with the scroll wheel, need to enter scrollback mode, which seems strange as their is a keybind for "Scrollback Mode"
I've just done a clean install of 11.4 from a Net install CD. I left it unattended while it installed, and came back to find a blank screen with just an xterm. I've rebooted it, and tried both the normal and the failsafe modes, but I just get the same result. The terminal contains the following:
I'm running a small server on a Lubuntu install, and I'd like to have new terminals start in Byobu, or at least screen. However, I can't figure out how to make Byobu start automatically. The built-in "Start Byobu with login" option doesn't seem to do anything, although it does add a line to my ~/.profile. How can I set Byobu as my default shell?
recently added xmonad and seems pretty fun! was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to add keybindings that don't start with the modmask key..reason needed is that i want to have the win key to be the modmask and then need shift+alt to switch between two languages. So far I've "hacked" it by writing a script that switches between the two languages whenever it runs, and I've bound that to modmask + shift however this causes problems whenever I press modmask + shift for other shortcuts...
Also, how do you make keybindings work for different languages.. effectively what I need is identify each key as a key rather than as a character.
I'm looking for the file in which global keybindings are set for Gnote. The man page claims they are stored in gconf --> '/apps/gnote/global_keybindings/open_start_here', /apps /gnote/global_keybindings/show_note_ menu'
I have a ~/.gconf/apps/gnote directory, but no files to set the individual keybindings. The keybindings work and can be set from within gnote, so i know they have to be somewhere on my system. Anyone have any ideas where I might look? I'm using Openbox on a Karmic command line install. I have no gconf-editor, and gnote looks to be the only program installed that uses gconf.
Uzbl uses hjkl for moving around, much like vim does. I was wondering if there was a browser (text based like links, or needing X like uzbl) which would be easy for someone used to emacs key bindings?Or if there is an emacs mode for having a buffer behave like a Links browser, but with emacs keybindings to move around...[For linux systems, please ideally something available through AUR or a debian package or both]
I'm trying to find a GUI program (not a terminal command) to bind the 4th and 5th buttons on my mouse to ALT+Tab and Escape. I tried BTNX however I encountered the error "btnx-config needs the file /etc/btnx/events to run". A good example of what I'm looking for with screenshots on it's site is X-Mouse Button Control which I've been using on XP however it's not available for Linux.
I'm trying to emulate behaviour I get from KeyRemap4MacBook on Mac OS X. It lets me remap control-m to Enter, for instance, globally. Is this possible with X/GNOME? Seems like xmodmap is not suitable for remapping key combinations. I tried xbindkeys to bind control-m to xdotool key Return, but it emits control-return. I tried xdotool keyup control; xdotool key Return; xdotool keydown control but it stills behaves unpredictably.
When I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, the Byobu terminal was installed. What are the differences between the Byobu terminal and the default terminal(I mean the terminal that is default in 10.10)? Is it more advantageous to use Byobu?
When I hit Alt+Ctrl+L my system is starting the ScreenSaver but not locking the screen. The keybinding is correctly set. This is happening in only root account but in another user account it works perfect !
I have no GNOME Panels on my desktop. I stopped gnome-panel from booting altogether by going into the configuration editoring to "/desktop/gnome/session/required_components" changing the panel key to "gnome-panel(Orig)" so that the command just errors out. Then adding a key in that same path the key is a string "avant-window-navigator". Since I've done this the screensaver doesn't come up. Also pidgin never goes idle. Both are set to hit at thirty minutes but have not hit in almost a day. I thought the mouse might be moving slowly or something butunplugged it and let it sit for almost an hour and nothing. Also at that time I had a VirtualBox with Windows XP in it and that screensaver hit no problem
I dont get my multitouch screen working. I have a Stantum screen (1f87:0002) and a GMA500 video driver with emgd and Xorg 1.9 I get a lot of output from evtest, xinput list-props, mtview etc. but no output from gesturetest or geistest. I have no idea where to proceed. (after successfully getting utouch-compiz working a second finger touch was not recognised as next single-input anymore)
So my laptop screen stopped working and i dont have the money to fix ti right now so i'm trying to use my lcd screen with it.the problem is that its set up not to mirror screens but to have 2 screens. This a problem because i cant do anything but hit alt f2 to open up terminal and google chrome and what not.access my display settings to set it up to mirror the screen because i have no top bar.all i have access to is a my display background.I'm using ubuntu 10.10 but i'm in 10.4 mode right now.
Just upgraded to Jessie from Wheezy. The process went smoothly.
I've noticed the lock screen is inescapable. The "Unlock" button does nothing, the keyboard is completely disabled, and all I have is a clock to stare at for all of eternity until I force a reboot. It doesn't hang or freeze, I'm just unable to get out of the lock screen. I've tried configuring the widgets and stuff in the System Settings, but I can't make it usable.
It was working perfectly in Wheezy, and is a pretty important feature that I use all the time when other people are around and I need to leave my station.
I just installed the opensuse 11.2 64 bit version on my gateway md2614u.I am having sound problems. There is no sound for the internet (..... was the test) and the amarok audio will not play any mp3 files. The only sound that I can hear is the initial start up noise. Other than that there is no sound.
I recently upgraded to suse11.4 and everything worked fine for a few months. Suddenly after logging in (GUI - LXDE desktop) the background screen is all what I can see and no menus, not even right click opens anything. Same in KDE desktop. All I can do is throw myself out with Ctrl Alt and F1. startx returns that the server is already running. All I can do is using (as root) "rm -rf /tmp/X0-lock" and then "startx --:1". That opens the GUI but only as root. What can I do that I can log in normally again? By the way I tried to reinstall but I only get to loading drivers and then everything stops.
A week or two ago the machine did not want to shut down unless I switch the power off, although starting did not have any problems. On Wednesday I downloaded a few extras including a pdf reader and updated the PC as well. I switched off on Wednesday evening and on Thursday morning the PC would start, the UBUNTU screen would appear and then just a blank screen. I tried several times to restart, but no success.
After several times of trying to restart I decided my only solution would be to re-install which I did. To my surprise this took quite some time and not as the original installation which only took a few minutes. The additional problem is that I kept windows with most of my documents still in windows. This did not pose a problem after the 1st installation as I could easily access the files.
However now I just cannot find any of those files and not even the original files saved in UBUNTU. I fortunately have a back-up on an external drive, but do not want to access that before I am sure that they will remain safe. I unfortunately do not understand the jargon being used even when someone says that I have to change something in the backend or in the program itself. I do not even know to open such a screen.
I am using ubuntu 11.04 32 bit. I tried to use my keyboard, until yesterday it works perfect. But this morning, I can not even login to my own desktop, as I do not see any feedback from the login screen when I type using the keyboard. completely white, nothing shown when I type using the keyboard. I tried different keyboards, it still won't work in the login screen. I tried to type to access bios, it works fine.I managed to remote using ssh, but when I type dmsg, it recognise the keyboard.
after getting my keyboard and mouse working (URL... not even when I was compiling kernels from floppies that came in the back of books did I have to work so hard to get the KEYBOARD working, sheesh), I have a mostly working system. However, Lock Screen does not work in any way, shape or form:
- It doesn't work via the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+L - It doesn't work if I select it from the Power button on the upper-right - It doesn't work if I press the Power button to suspend (even though all the correct things are ticked/unticked in gconf-editor) - It doesn't work if I switch users and back
Now, I do have a laptop running 11.04 and its Lock Screen *does* work. The only difference I can find is that the laptop says gdm is running screensaver. If it shouldn't be running, why else might Lock Screen not be working?
I'm having problems installing or removing anything from Debian. The whole problem has kind of looped for me for half a day now.
I installed Debian with the latest release and when I booted into the system, everything was working fine except the screen was blurry. So I spent a few hours looking for a way to install nvidia drivers. Trying to used the nv drivers, (vesa before) caused gdm to stop working with "no screen found" errors and when i finally installed the nvidia drivers, it seems to have reverted my kernel back. I was at 686 before and now I'm on 486, giving me an extra option between 486 and 686 in grub.
This was fine to me but when I boot into the 486 I get notifications about updates close to a gig in download size. I didn't want to download it in fear of breaking the system but did after package manager would refuse to install or uninstall anything without installing/uninstalling the gigs worth of updates.
During the update, my screen kind of malfunctioned and i rebooted going into ctrl+alt+f1. When I came to, the gdm wouldn't start, kind of looping to the login screen and blanking out, never fully drawing it. I tried a few configurations in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to no avail and decided to try the 686 configuration.
Xserver wouldn't boot with noscreens found untill I decided to try to install the same nvidia drivers. While I was still on the 686 kernel, it would not boot but when I rebooted and went into the 486 kernel, it logged back in to what seemed before updating.
I have a laptop with SuSE 11.2 installed, worked all like a charm. Then the problems started :I lost my display (it is dark, you can see very very faint the desktop from time to time)Clearly a hardware problem. So, I attached an external screen. Only this shows nothing, cannot get it activated.Since the laptop automatically boots into our LAN, i just started it, and connected via SSH from an other computer. No problem i have a shell. Then I thought to be clever, and activated the pure-ftp demon, so I can download all interesting files to a new computer. I activated it with / as shared directory. After that, I could not boot the laptop anymore, it did not connect to the network.
After a lot of try-outs I finally managed to get the external screen working (only after GDM is started, i can see the workspace, nothing at boot time). Then I found out that the network would not start anymore, actually I could not even start yast or a su shell. After some investigation, I found that pure-ftp had changed the owner of all files in the / partition to ftp (and the group also to ftp)So, su has no access rights anymore to /etc/shadow, and thus cannot verify my root password anymore. Now i'm stuck. I can work as normal user on the old machine, but no network, the DVD wont write anymore and usb sticks don't open anymore.I cannot boot the system in single usermode, since then I have no screen.Has anybody here the brilliant idea I need to get the files out of this machine, without taking the disc out(would not know how to do that anyway).
Is it just me, or has 'lock screen' stopped working in a recent update? I updated my install today and after rebooting I can't lock the screen... the screen saver doesn't lock it and if I select 'lock screen' manually from the menu then... nothing happens.
I even created a new user in case there was something weird in my configuration, but logged in as them I can't lock the screen either.
This is obviously a bit of an issue in an office environment as I don't want to have to log out every time I leave my desk.
I can't use the touch pad in my laptop for clicking in the touch surface at the login screen. (and not the buttons) This was even a case in my desktop. but i solved it by choosing enable touchpad click option from control centre > mouse preference > touchpad. But how to enable touchpad click at the login screen?
