I've set up home server, which doesn't have to be as powerful as other servers, so I decided to install GUI because of applications that are alternatives to classical GUI applications in headless version requires more skill/knowledge. However, I don't want server to run GUI always at start (which gnome-desktop package does). I need some configuration in KDE/gnome/xfce (haven't decided) that doesn't start GUI after each start (e.g is required to type startx or equivalent command to start GUI)(off topic: can you also recommend good remote-administration with GUI transport ?)

When I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, the Byobu terminal was installed. What are the differences between the Byobu terminal and the default terminal(I mean the terminal that is default in 10.10)? Is it more advantageous to use Byobu?

I've installed Ubuntu desktop edition 10.04 so far, using alcohol tool as I wanted to install "inside Windows".I successfully installed it everything seems to be fine to me. But, the problem is when I select Ubuntu from boot menu it stops at a console with some grub loader message and doesn't shows login screen.
Please, not that I had installed it a couple of time before and it worked perfectly for some reason and Windows problem I had to uninstall it.
I can also post pictures of that screen if you require, I've to capture it through my mobile phone, which is with suck graphics.
Message:GNU GRUB version 1.98-1ubuntu5

I have OpenSuse 11.3, with KDE4. a few days ago, after an upgrade, are presenting several flaws in the system configuration.
But I think the cause of all is that at startup, before showing up loginscreen display the message box
Quote:
Could not update ICEauthority file / var / lib / gdm / .ICEautority.
I gave CRTR Alt F1 to switch to text mode, and consult the file in that directory to verify the existence of the file and its permissions:

I've checked some forums, but apparently they relate to other scenarios that describe the solution does not work

The other day I was practicing some of the famous Awk One-liners and noticed something interesting in the bash shell on ubuntu 9.04. Some specific awk commands would execute correctly but when I tried to use an up arrow to re-run the command that particular command was not present in my history. Is this an issue specific to me? specific to awk? Completely random?

I just updated to 10.04 LTS & I would like to edit my grub menu to get rid of the unneeded entries.
When I enter /etc/default/grub into terminal It gives me bash: /etc/default/grub: Permission denied.
From what I have read I just need to put # in front of what I don't want to see in the menu, but I'm unable to access the file to make the changes.
I would also like to make a backup of the file first before editing it.

Here's a good one. Using KMail when I open a new message and click on 'Select' it doesn't seem to be giving me all of my contacts from KAddresbook. Just ones I have sent mail to. That's under the all contacts tab. If I try to select default address book it shows nothing.

After a momentary power failure My server did not reboot due to a disk error. I rebooted and ran an disk repair and the machine booted fine. Now if I got to the update manager and try to update I get the following error:
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_lucid-updates_main_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I checked the file location listed the file is there (hidden). Should it be a hidden file? If so how do I repair this error? I went to the preferences of update manager and changed the following, Updates every 2 days from weekly, Changed the server location from US server to main server. The update manager ran and updated 13 files. I don't know what change repaired my issue but a guess is, changing the download location from the US server to the Main server.

Is there a terminal program that shows what you pressed on the keyboard? There are these two keys to the right and left of the up arrow key that are "PageBack" and "PageForward" for Firefox, but Midori can't use these keys like that, in fact, I don't think it even knows they exist. Wondering if I can get their name or something.

I'm very accustomed to using gnome-terminal. Today, out of the blue, the text that shows the things like menu options is extremely small (not readable) (please see screenshot 1).
This is also the case for my favorite text editor gedit (see screenshot 2)
Does anyone know what is causing this and how I can fix it?
I know how to manipulate the size of the text IN the gnome terminal window [from usage: --zoom=ZOOMFACTOR Set the terminal's zoom factor (1.0 = normal size)] but my problem is with the text of the menu options AND --more importantly-- also of the content of gedit text editor.
