General :: Building Application In Shell Using Make Command
May 26, 2011
Consider that I am building my application in Linux shell using make command but somehow the build fails. Is there any way I can find out that the build has failed (of course looking at shell for error messages will do the job for me but I don't want that). Is there any flag make or shell will set/reset if such failure occurs ?

I'm building the code on remote linux machines, and it takes very long time. Since all the filesystem is on NFS, I suspect the NFS is the bottleneck. Can I profile the build process (make all) down to system read/write calls? Or simply put, what tool do I need to find the bottleneck. Is strace gonna help?

When I try to launch application which runs in another window (not inside shell), it always fails with this kind of message: (example from gnome-terminal)
Code:
** (gnome-terminal:2477): WARNING **: Failed to connect to the session manager: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported Failed to get the session bus: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
Falling back to non-factory mode. Failed to summon the GConf demon; exiting. Failed to contact configuration server; the most common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.) I am running it as root, have GNOME installed and running, and also fresh install of gconf.

I am running an application called QuantiSNP [URL]. The binary file is "quantisnp2", called upon in the "run_quantisnp2.sh" supplied by the authors. I am only able to run the application for single file processing (e.g. 1 input file for 1 sample; I can't run the batch file processing because I don't have the necessary BeadStudio report files, which has different formatting for the input files).
The difficulty is that I have 300 samples (300 unique sample IDs) and 3 input files for each sample for a total of 900 runs of this application. I am wondering how would I be able to automate this process as a shell script instead of basically manually changing the sample ID and respective input files every time a run completes? I bolded the single file processing shell script command line options below that need to be changed for each sample/input single file processing run. The command line option "--sampleid" is for the name given to the processed output files corresponding to the sample of interest and there are 3 input files for each sample.
/home2/jason/QuantiSNP/quantisnp/linux64/run_quantisnp2.sh /home2/jason/QuantiSNP/MCR/v79/ --config /home2/jason/QuantiSNP/quantisnp/config/params.dat --levels /home2/jason/QuantiSNP/quantisnp/config/levels-affy.dat --outdir /home2/jason/QuantiSNP/quantisnp_out/ --sampleid sample1 --gender female --input-files /home2/jason/files/sample1_input.txt
Note that each sample has 3 input files, for a total of 3 runs of "quantisnp2" for each sample. e.g.
SAMPLEID INFILE
sample1 /home2/jason/files/sample1_input.txt
sample1 /home2/jason/files/sample1_input2.txt
sample1 /home2/jason/files/sample1_input3.txt
[code]....

I'm looking to make a launching script which launches a program in one of the current directories that the user has open, the problem is I have no idea how to get info about all of the terminals open.I simply want to check which directories the user has open and do a pwd on the terminals, and then use that to cd into the dir before launching. I might be able to use a combo of who, tty, top, and pwd...but I don't know where to go.

We have zabbix Network monitoring tool installed on two servers 172.17.11.6 ( Master ) and 172.17.11.3 ( Slave ) RHEL 5.4 Servers with 172.17.11.4 being Virtual Ipaddress. We are trying to implement High Availability with Red Hat Cluster Suite.OS level Clustering has been implemented with following cluster configuraiton.
But we need to implement Application level clustering for Zabbix_server process which inturn depends on httpd and mysqld deamons to be running. So I have to check the health of mysqld and httpd with a shell script along with the health of zabbix_server process.Any good tutorials for this ? Any guidlines that I have to follow ?Here I may need to take care of following things when any one of the process goes down
1. Shifhting Virtual IP
2. Shifting /dev/sdb1 ( Shared drive to slave )
3. stopping other services on master
4. starting all the services on slave

I want to make specific keymaps for application, that working only in it and doesn't affect other apps.
For example, I already use my Caps key to toggle input language (via xorg.conf), but I want Capslock to behave like Esc in vim.
Looks like xmodmap doesn't have any options related to that.

I am setting up a cron job, where i am calling a shell script to make few builds. I got struck at a point, need some expert inputs to proceed further. The script is categorized in 5 parts and in the last part while building software it asks for few questions like:-
1. Build mode choice
2. normal build
3. Copy Images
4. Arch
User manually has to input ans for these questions:-
1
yes
n
64
The ans's are fixed and this won't change. How shall i hard-code them or do something in the script so as when script flow reaches to this point it automatically take's these value. So far the cron job is not getting completed as it's waiting for user to key in these values manually. I had faced similar issue while building kernel modules but there it was easier as i had to take default values always:-

So, I went to the "open with" on the shell file, "Select custom command" and typed the above, but nothing happened. What should I type as the custom command ?

I am trying to recompile a large open source project with the Nvidia Cuda Compiler: 'nvcc' [URL].. nvcc supports all the compile flags that gcc does but not all of the linking options. This shouldn't be a problem however as nvcc generates object files that are compatible with gcc and I should hence be able to compile with nvcc and then link with gcc (linking against the CUDA library).
To compile with nvcc I use:
./configure CC=nvcc
Which successfully creates make files that se nvcc to compile. But the Configuration script does not seem to honor LD=gcc in the same way, ie: ./configure CC=nvcc LD=gcc still tries to link everything with nvcc which promptly fails because nvcc does not support the option '-soname' without which the project will not link correctly. What am I doing wrong? How can tell the config script to link with gcc?

i've been searching all over the internet for a way to let the user press a particular key let's say 'y' without the user having to press [Enter] as confirmationfor yes, this would then run another function.
Quote:
Book Inventory Summary Report:-
Title, Author, Price
______________________________
StarWars EP1, G.Lucas, $49.59
Harry Potter, Rowling, $45.98
The Matrix, Mr. Smith, $53.98
Press 'y' to make a copy of this result into a file or 'n' to return to the main menu.. I understand the "press any key to continue" would go something like
Code:
read -sn 1 -p "Press any key to continue.." But i try many different ways of getting the "press a particular key" function, and none of them works.

Reading a BASH script, I saw a find command preceded with a backslash. It was similar to this:
Code:
`find . -type f -name '*.xml' -print > xmlfilelist`
It's impossible to find documentation about this in man pages or on the internet, since 'backslash' are always evoked along with special characters. I also noticed that even though the command was surrounded with backquotes, the result was not affected to any variable. Maybe the backslash's presence is related with this?
