Ubuntu :: Synaptic Quick Search Doesn't Work?
Jun 7, 2010I just upgraded my computer to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid. Whenever I open Synaptic Package Manager it opens normally. If I type into the "Quick search" box, when I try to type in a word as soon as I type the second letter Synaptic immediately closes. However, if I click on the full "Search" button, this function works as it should. I just can't use Quick Search. Synaptic closes every time.
I uninstalled synaptic from a terminal by typing [CODE] apt-get remove synaptic. Then I reinstalled using [CODE] apt-get install synaptic. Reinstalling did not fix the problem. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?
Fedora :: Add A Folder To The Overview For Quick Search?
Jun 4, 2011Assume that I've got a folder called "Stuffs". So in fedora 15 you don't have a desktop folder, I mean you can't use it like we were used to. Even if you activate the option that allows you to use the "desktop", it is very uncomfortable because you can't minimize windows quickly. So my question is: Is there a way of put a "Link" in the overview, so I can get in to the overview and write "Stuffs" in the search bar and get my "Stuffs" folder open ?

Apr 25, 2011I am trying to construct a quick regex that will search for six lines of text without a clear line break between them. It only needs to search, not replace, as I will be using in gEdit (with regex plugin) anyway.
It's for editing subtitle files. The video player I will be using them on can only cope with 3-line subtitles, so I just need to edit any in the srt file that contain four or more. There won't be many so I can do it manually. For example:

but .* seems to mean "any character, or none", so that doesn't work. My experience of regular expressions is limited, but I do know they are very powerful when used correctly!
Fedora :: Ubuntu To Change Its Default Search Engine To Yahoo?
Apr 4, 2010Can Fedora change its default search engine to Yahoo! just like Ubuntu is about to change its default search engine from Google to Yahoo!? I'd love that.I don't like Google. Too many unnecessary repetitive indexing of the same or slightly changed titles to links for the same sites. I've always liked Yahoo! from the start.

Sep 9, 2010When I search using Places -> Search for Files..., there is an extra directory that shows up in the "Look in folder:" menu. This directory (jim) is unwanted and doesn't appear in the general Gnome menus (such as Places). The attached image of a screenshot shows what I mean.
I cannot figure out how to remove it in the search menu. Perhaps it was put there because I frequently search in that directory. Whatever the case, I'd like to get rid of it. I understand that this isn't the biggest computer problem ever posted in a forum. Nonetheless, I'd really like to hear how to remove that blasted directory.
Ubuntu Installation :: Removing Evolution From Synaptic Vs Just Removing The Applet
Feb 27, 2011what i did was, remove evolution mail from synaptic, what i wanted to do was just remove the indicator applet from the task bar. i read a bunch of bad stuff about removing evolution from synaptic vs just removing the applet.
im worried. did i break anything or put my security at risk. after, i used a command (older) (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)to install ubuntu desktop. because i thought that it would fix evolution. then i went to synaptic and installed a package called evolution. i rechecked evolution in applications menu. however, i notice that i have both a checkable evolution and two evolution icons. nothing 'seems' broken. im not sure if it ever was. and evolution calender pops up as normal, as does the the installed plain evolution. they both seems to be an exact copy of the other.
all i really wanted to do was remove the indicator applet. did i make a serious mistake. since ive had ubuntu, ive reformatted a lot because i was worried i made a mistake of some kind. however now im into the more "make a mistake and fix it stage' as im pretty happy with my current desktop and have worked hard to customize it. the command, sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages removed the mail icon. i still am worried that i broke something, or put my security at risk. also, now i have two mail icons. evolution mail and calendar, and another just called evolution.
Fedora Installation :: Apt-get Search Wget Saying Invalid Operation Search?
Apr 5, 2011i guess this is an installation issue as i am newish to Linux and got a F14 laptop from a used/refurb store... Anyway it seem i have difficulty with getting GTK running or maybe it is WGET...?
i did manage to install apt-get and was able to run synaptics ... but now whenever i try to run synaptics it flashes the interface and crashes. i tried apt-get search wget and it says invalid operation search. i tried apt cache wget and get a crash box in the upper right corner... i tried apt-get gtk+extra-2.1.2-4.fc14 and it says invalid operation gtk...
All of which is frustrating my attempts to get the GTK interface to J working. Their script uses WGET which i also cannot get.
Debian Multimedia :: Removing Epiphany Without Removing Half The System?
May 31, 2011I know a bunch of commands and I am comfortable using the terminal, I even set a powerpc server but I can't figure out how to remove epiphany on this new computer I'm setting up. I didn't install anything with tasksel. I installed gnome and xorg afterwards... I load it up and 'startx' just fine. then I check around for the programs that were installed. I lik'em gimp, lot's of utilities. gedit. anyway I find epiphany, which I have already established that I dislike, I immediately go to the root terminal (another nice program that comes with gnome) and type apt-get remove epiphany-browser-data the output says it will be deleting gnome... however I have researched and found these are simpy meta packages that don't really matter.... however under the section that states all the packages that will be removed by autoremove there is a huge list... I doubt these packages are safe to remove. how to remove epiphany without removing a huge amount of probably needed software

I've been unable to turn off the notifications that appear in the top right corner, despite a decent amount of searching on google. I can't remove any notifications package without removing a bunch of important software along with it. Also, F13 refuses to "Safely Remove" either of my external disks. I have to yank out the usb cord, touching wood each time.

You know that when logging in, if you enter a wrong password, you'll have to wait a few seconds before giving it another try to avoid bruteforcing. However, when I enter the correct password in 11.04, it makes me wait a few seconds and then loads my desktop (fluxbox in my case, but the same problem remains in Unity).

I have followed the install guides using proper server/client names in appropriate boxes etc. Removed and re-installed and still no luck. One question does multiple work spaces which seems to be a default setting interfere with quick synergy? Apr 2, 2010Launchy is a great piece of software, I use it on Windows mainly for quickly accessing folders. I love its auto-indexing in the background, and hardly ever browse through folders manually these days, solves me lots of time.
On Linux (Ubuntu 9.10), I usually "live" in the terminal, however. Therefore, Launchy on Linux (or Gnome Do, or its other replacements) are not what I need - as it opens the file manager, and I don't need the file manager.
What I do need is something that indexes my folders and lets me cd into them quickly in the terminal. For example:

May 7, 2010It has been a long time i dreamed to get ubuntu and now i have my ubuntu 10.04 installed. I found similar posts in the forum but no one helped me out. i have a webcam Logitech quick cam pro 9000 and i tried to use it with skype 2.1 beta 2 i installed this morning. Well i can see the video but the microphone (build in the webcam ) does not work at all and it worked fine with windows. This is the lsusb command in the terminal :
