Ubuntu :: Browse To A Directory (or) Use USB Drive?

Jan 21, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 as Guest OS with Windows XP as Host using Virtual Box. I have also installed the VirtualBox Guest Additions. Now I want to connect to the internet using my modem.

[URL]

From the above link, I downloaded the scanModem file from the Host XP. I don't know how to copy that file to the Guest Ubuntu OS.

[URL]

I couldn't find the /mnt/msdos directory - only /mnt (no files inside that directory). Also, don't know how to paste from the USB drive.

Ubuntu :: USB Shared Drive - Corrupted Directory

Mar 12, 2010

This is a USB shared drive, with an ext3 partition. The partition is located at /dev/sdb1. I use Samba to share /media/tiga1000/samba/public, and everyone on the network can add/delete files to it. Specifically, this is our media drive, and we upload a lot of pictures to it, since me and my sister are amateur photographers. Under /public/images/camera_pictures/2010, I have 3 directories. 01_january, 02_february, and 03_march. The directory that has been corrupted is 03_march, and when I say corrupted, I mean that I cannot open it. It acts as a unknown file type that can't be opened.

Here is the file properties of it:
Code:
drsmall@mycroft:/media/tiga1000/samba/public/images/camera_pictures/2010$ ls -lah
total 960K
drwxr-xr-x 4 nobody nogroup 4.0K 2010-03-11 21:22 .
drwxr-xr-x 5 nobody nogroup 4.0K 2010-02-18 20:19 ..
drwxr-xr-x 14 nobody nogroup 4.0K 2010-01-31 11:57 01_january
drwxr-xr-x 10 nobody nogroup 4.0K 2010-02-23 15:47 02_february
-r--r--r-- 1 nobody nogroup 938K 2010-03-11 15:46 03_march

How I should go about recovering it. Somehow it lost it's directory switch. Should I unmount the drive and run fsck on it? I would like to be able to recover these images, if it is at least possible!

Ubuntu :: Automatic Transferring Of /home/directory To USB Drive

Mar 17, 2010

Method of automatic backup from my hard drive to a usb drive when plugged in.

Basically I'll be constantly putting files in /home/downloads and I want it so when I plug in a NTFS usb drive it will automatically Cut(not copy) all the contents of that folder including other folders to my usb drive. Is there any well known programs that can do this?

I would prefer something that is in the repositories that is easily configurable via command line rather than some complicated script.

Ubuntu :: Move The Users Home Directory To An External Drive?

Jan 19, 2010

As I regularly move between Mac and PC, I thought it would be a good idea to put all my data on an external drive. As Windows 7 and OS X have similar home folder layouts, I just simply put all the folders I need for both on the root of the external drive and changed a few settings so that the Home folder for my user is on the external drive on both Windows and OS X.

Whilst Ubuntu also has a similar structure, I cannot work out how to have it so that my users home folder is on the external drive. I have done a little research and all I can find is how to have the /home directory on another partition. a) this is not what I'm trying to do, just the folder for my user and b) this would mean formatting the external drive to extX format, which just wouldn't work for me.

I am using 9.10 (or will be once the upgrade is complete)

General :: Rsync To Copy Directory Tree From NAS Drive ?

Apr 10, 2010

I have a WD world book edition 1TB NAS drive, and just purchased an acomdata 1tb drive and connected it to the NAS via USB. If I recall I think the WD NAS has a ext_ or some type of linux filesystem on it, and the acomdata has a ntfs filesystem on it.

What I want to do is copy over certain directory trees of the NAS to the USB attached drive. I usually use MS synctoy to sync folders from my windows pc to the NAS drive, and MS richcopy to make the initial transfer from PC to NAS. For this operation though, since it is taking place entirely on the NAS and its connected drive, I thought that rsync would be the best option, and it is available on my NAS drive.

Last night I entered in rsync -avr /movies/* /usb1-1share1/ to copy the entire "movies" dir to the drive, which shows up as usb1-1share1 on the NAS drive. It copied most of the directory tree ok, but a lot of the folders were empty, so this morning I tried rsync -Carv --ignore-existing /movies/* /usb1-1share1/ to try and get all the files missed, without recopying the 24GB that did make it across. This also managed to copy a few more GB over, but not everything.

I am running the command from an ssh session on the NAS using putty on my PC, in as user "admin" which should have all rights over these folders. There is a bunch of errors in the command window like this: rsync: failed to set times on "/shares/usb1-1share1/movies/classics/fulldvd/First Blood DVD/.VTS_01_2.VOB.RxdjWZ": Operation not permitted (1)

I want to restart another session and get the files it missed, but I want to find out what I am doing wrong first. Should I be doing this as root user? am I missing some switches or just plain doing it all wrong?

OpenSUSE Install :: Using An SSD But Keeping Home Directory On Hard Drive?

Jun 14, 2011

I have a dual boot windows XP/OpenSuse 11.3 system running from a hard drive. They are both 32 bit in spite of the fact that the system can run 64 bit.

I would like to upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit (the wife insists, not yet a Linux possibility) and OpenSuse 11.4 64 bit, but having the programme files on an SSD for faster loading, with my data files on the existing hard drive.

I'm happy with the notion of getting the SSD going as a dual boot system. With Windows, as I understand it, it can tell it fairly easily where to look for the "my documents" folder on the hard drive.

However, the Home directory in Linux is not quite the same. How (if it's possible) could I run the SSD but use my existing Home directory on the hard drive?

Debian :: Restore User Directory After Trying To Mount A SATA Drive

Jan 21, 2011

This is on Debian Lenny 5.0.7 with a LXDE desktop. Using Root Terminal I have just been trying to mount a SATA drive NTFS file system using the command: mount -t ntfs /dev/sdb1 /dev/

unfortunately the /sdb1 should of been 'sdc1', I think, and what's happened is that my username and files have been moved somewhere else. PCMan File manager has ceased to work and open applications have ceased to be able to save files.

How do I discover where they went, and how do I restore them back to the original place of debian:/home/username/ ?

I'm about 8 hours in to learning Linux/Debian and desperately trying leave behind about 15 years of Windows use for something better. I'm used to troubleshooting electronics/hardware/all manner of things but the syntax here is, at the moment, a slippery slope.
