I have a usb drive which I will call it "mydrive" for this discussion. I am trying to get to it so I can do a ls -al on the usb device itself.
But I'm not sure how to get to the dir entry for the device.
How do you perform a long directory listing of all files in the /bin directory that have exactly three characters in their name?

Generally ls command shows directory and files' permission as follows;

Is there a command to return a recursive listing of sub-directories and the number of files in them? I have found plenty of ways to give me the total number of files in a directory structure, but none that gives a list of the sub-directories with the number of files in them. "du" gives me a listing of directories with their sizes, but I couldn't find an option (or any other way) to give me the number of files as well. Ideally, I'd like to get list with "Size" "Files" "Dir name" - And the order of the columns doesn't matter. Is there a "simple" command line solution or do I need a shell script for that?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have, for example, a folder called "MyFolder" and it contains 3 files: MyFile1, MyFile2, MyFile3. The only file that I do NOT want a particular user/group to even see that it exists is, for exmple, MyFile2.So, when they do a directory listing on MyFolder, they should only see MyFile1 and MyFile3. How can this be done in Linux? The important thing is that it is not just preventing them from "executing" MyFile2, but to prevent them from even knowing that it exists by not including it in a directory listing.This is a simpified example using one file, but in reality, I have lots of files and some of those that I want to block are also subfolders.It is very important for me to hide the existence of certain files/folders when the user does a directory listing. It's also important that the files stay in their current folder (that is, I can't use a workaround which requires moving all the files into a separate folder and then securing that folder).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a user who just got a new laptop and when he connects to the FTP server, it verifies his username and password like it should, but when it goes to do the directory listing, it just kinda sits there. if i refresh the view, the folders show up. wonder if there's something in a log somewhere for vsftp i should be looking at. it could just be his ftp client or air card too, but i want to be thorough on the server too becuase it will help me learn.

I have a directory off of / called software that I would like to have show up as a directory listing so if I go to [URL] I get the directory listing. I want to move a file from depth 2 to a directory of depth 3 when the directory of depth 3 is within the directory of depth 2. I have set up Ubuntu 9.1 with Samba etc. as a web server. The files are in /var/www and are shared through Samba as web. The root directory and sub directories have index.htm files in them but unfortunately except for the root directory users can see the directory listing rather than the directory automatically producing index.htm. This is obviously causing security problems. How to prevent directory browsing by users coming into the server over the internet by a redirect URL from another site. E.g. [URL] where bigwebsite is a domain registered with a change ip server because I have a service which dynamically allocates an IP Address.

View 2 Replies View Relatedhow to pipe the current directory listing into sort so that the output is the date in descending order (primary sort key). If there are multiple entries with the same date, I'd like the times sorted in ascending order. It seems simple but for some reason this isn't working:
ls -l | sort -k 6r -k 7
For some reason it doesn't seem to ever get to the second sort key when using column 6 (last modified date).
Just want a very simple directory listing output, no real need for hyperlinks, preferably with a line space between items, that the end user can print out.
I have this code, just don't have the knowledge to make it do what I want.

When I boot using the Mint distro on same PC both ext usb drives are automounted. Looking for pointers as to why the 1.5TB verbatim disk does not automount.

I have two drives that I keep my content on (which is re-downloadable if I lose a drive). In the event that I lose a drive, I would like to have a list that I can refer to so I know what I need to re-download again.
It would be good if it doesn't list *every* file but maybe only the relevant folders and files. For example, many folders are extracted archives of 100's of files. If it just gave me the folder name that would be better than all the files (less stuff to sift through).
Firefox opens file listing instead of Nautilus opening file listing.When I access a folder via "Places" -> "Home Folder" or "Places" -> "Downloads", Firefox opens and list the contents of the directory.I have re-installed Nautilus, un-installed Firefox and then going to "Places" -> "Home Folder" or "Places" -> "Downloads" launches Nautilus and I can view the contents normally. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a WD world book edition 1TB NAS drive, and just purchased an acomdata 1tb drive and connected it to the NAS via USB. If I recall I think the WD NAS has a ext_ or some type of linux filesystem on it, and the acomdata has a ntfs filesystem on it.
What I want to do is copy over certain directory trees of the NAS to the USB attached drive. I usually use MS synctoy to sync folders from my windows pc to the NAS drive, and MS richcopy to make the initial transfer from PC to NAS. For this operation though, since it is taking place entirely on the NAS and its connected drive, I thought that rsync would be the best option, and it is available on my NAS drive.
Last night I entered in rsync -avr /movies/* /usb1-1share1/ to copy the entire "movies" dir to the drive, which shows up as usb1-1share1 on the NAS drive. It copied most of the directory tree ok, but a lot of the folders were empty, so this morning I tried rsync -Carv --ignore-existing /movies/* /usb1-1share1/ to try and get all the files missed, without recopying the 24GB that did make it across. This also managed to copy a few more GB over, but not everything.
I am running the command from an ssh session on the NAS using putty on my PC, in as user "admin" which should have all rights over these folders. There is a bunch of errors in the command window like this: rsync: failed to set times on "/shares/usb1-1share1/movies/classics/fulldvd/First Blood DVD/.VTS_01_2.VOB.RxdjWZ": Operation not permitted (1)
I want to restart another session and get the files it missed, but I want to find out what I am doing wrong first. Should I be doing this as root user? am I missing some switches or just plain doing it all wrong?
I have an external USB hard drive (sdb1) mounted at /media/Iomega HDD. When I try to do a chmod to a directory on this drive, chmod doesn't give me an error, but it doesn't change the privs - even when I'm root. Why is this?

I cd to the directory that I want to pull the files to, then I enter:
rsync -vrtW account@remote.com:~/public_html
I enter the password then it starts running. I get all the files listed, but none of them actually transfer. What am I missing?
i am not able to mount a pen drive (which is formatted in ext2 format) with directory permission drwxrwxrwx and file permission as -rw-rw-rw.

I think that the file /var/run/utmp might have something to do with this, but it's not writeable by non-root users (permission 644). I'm fairly certain that this can be done by a non-privileged user (because someone told me that they were able to do so), but I don't know how they did it and can't ask them right now.

I want to find out what files link to a (not symlinks, mind you), assuming that this is more complicated (they are spread around to different directories).
I kind of understand about the filesystem storing links in one area and data in another, so I understand it probably takes more work to find a link from a file location than the other way around.
