So, I've installed Ubuntu v9.10 through the Wubi and I can see only the C, E drivers but not the D one (which is, where I have installed the Ubuntu itself and maybe that's why the problem appear).

I couldn't find the /mnt/msdos directory - only /mnt (no files inside that directory). Also, don't know how to paste from the USB drive.
I just booted up, after making a flash USB for a test (didn't work) so I booted as normally into Ubuntu 9.10 (not dual boot). When I get back on, there's this... I don't know how to explain it. If someone can think of a better way to explain this, I'll change the title to be a bit more helpful, and easier to search for those who have a similar problem.
I can't browse through windows (such as with Alt + Tab, or even just clicking on another window), nothing comes to the front, and stays as is. I've not touched my graphics / display settings, so the only thing I can think of, is when I was going through the boot-up applications, but I doubt I disabled anything that would have been graphics and GUI based, or the compizconfig-settings-manager disrupted something. I've ye to test anything, it's rather early.

recently I got new wireless card, att usb Quicksilver(based/produce by Option?), for att.Regular gnome network manager freezes the computer when I am plugging it it therefore I installed the one from wicd.net.Also, I am using HSOConnect (to connect by to G3 network), and sometimes I connect to regular wireless g connection through router.
Under both cases I can ping the website by IP and can access the website by ip (ex. google) but can not ping or browse by name.As a side note... I can use and access Skype fine under g3 network and normal wireless.I tried browsing and finding other solutions in past few days but ended up breaking everything and reinstalling to get back to the point I am at now.I am working on the road, so not being to broswse is rather crippling to me.... also I can access internet normally only from home from different computer now.
I know this is probably an extremely easy question... but does anyone know how to browse the files of an mp3 player in ubuntu 10.04? when i insert it it shows up in rhythmbox, but i'm unable to browse the files manually... i also looked under media and it isn't showing up. any ideas?

My setup:
Private router which connects to the internet.
Host: win7 with VMWare workstation
Ubuntu 10.04 runs in a virtual machine on VMWare workstation.
Win7 works fine. Ubuntu can ping with valid ip address and firefox can load a webpage if provided with valid ip address. Ubuntu cannot ping with domain name and firefox cannot browse with domain name. Examples:

brand new install of 10.4 server and I'm having a strange issue. I cannot browse to any website by it's domain name, but I can connect via IP address.
I've been googling around and did the following:
added nameservers to /etc/resolv.conf based on an nslookup from my windows box:
nameserver 71.250.0.12
nameserver 68.237.161.12
I commented out the hosts line in /etc/nsswitch.conf per another site and changed it to: hosts: files dns
I can see other computers on my local network via IP and I can browse to the server's default apache page by it's hostname, so I'm assuming it's something about the server's dns resolution, but I'm not sure of my next step.
I tried browsing URL... from Ubuntu - no luck - all browsers fail saying it's some network problem or so,but when I launched windowsXP from VirtualBox from inside Ubuntu (Maverick x64) - no problem viewing this site.Anyone any idea what could be wrong?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.10 at work and I've installed a Windows XP virtual box machine under it, that is joind to our Active Directory domain(but Ubuntu is/will not joined). I've set up VPN on XP box and I can connect to it from Ubuntu. I want to browse network shares(that use AD for permissions) and domain sites(like sharepoint) from Ubuntu. But even after connecting to VPN when I can't browse network shares, and nautilus asks for domain user/pass and tries to open share with no success. What extra steps is needed to browse my corporate network from Ubuntu via VPN?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been quite frustrated searching around for others that have had the same problems as I have had an what solutions are available. It appears there is a plethora of issues surrounding file sharing between Ubuntu and Windows machines; but things work prefectly for some and not for others.
The specific problem that I have having is that I cannot access file shares from any of the Windows 7 machines on my network. I use a Windows 7 machine for the main source of files that I like to access from other machines on the network. I do not normally access it from other Windows 7 machines through a Homegroup (I have removed the Windows 7 PC from the homegroup while trying to figure this out as well) - I normally just browse the network via the Windows 7 machine.
Here is what I'm doing (and seeing):
1. Click on home folder icon on Unity's launcher
2. Click "Network" in the sidepane
3. Wait a long time (like 40 seconds or so). "Windows Network" is the only folder/icon showing up in the "Network" folder once it shows anything.
4. Click on "Windows Network"
5. "WORKGROUP" shows up
6. Click on it
7. There is a delay with no visual indication (other than nothing happens and clicking in that window does nothing) and then I see "Opening "WORKGROUP" - Click cancel to stop"
8. See "Unable to mount location - Failed to retrieve share list from server"
I ran 'smbtree -N' and see a line for the PC I'm currently using, plus I see the following line for the other two PCs in the workgroup "WORKGROUP" (name is different for other PC):

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've always been a big fan of linux having used it extensively in the military, came across a really nice looking distro called ubuntu 8.10. I installed it along side Vista on my hp dv7-1170 laptop and dual boot. Worked like a charm found all the drivers for all the hp devices including the webcam bluray etc. So I decided to put ubuntu on exclusively and just run virtualbox ose and put a vista session on there for when I needed it.
So I did that no problems, went and installed all the updates. Between the time I installed the updates and downloaded and installed a server patch to allow it to use all 4gb ram, I lost my inet connection. which was wireless. So I plugged into cat5 outlet and nothing. Just won't get an IP, so I wiped it again and reinstalled. Now I still can't get an IP from wireless or eth0. I can manually assign it an ip and it says connected, but still don't get out.
I had a 9.04 install that was working well within the network. I had a lot of shares setup from a windows 2003 server. Unfortunately, I had a hardware failure and had to upgrade. Also unfortunately, 9.04 would not install on the new hardware (MB/CPU/RAM), but I was able to install 9.10.Now my problem is I can not browse the windows network. I installed samba and followed the instructions found here
When I go to network through nautilus, I see a windows network icon, when I open it, there is nothing.I am at a loss and really need this problem resolved (work production computer)
I can ping IP addresses of sites, say 209.85.229.99 (google.com), but I cannot ping google.com, nor browse it. Same thing for every alphabetic address and hence in practice I have no internet on my laptop. In windows, I'd just flush DNS but I don't know what to do in Ubuntu. I am using WICD.

View 9 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 9.10 now, before 9.04 was installed. On both versions I was unable to browse windows network - when I visit corresponding icon in nautilus, I see error message:

Looks like some service was missed at startup and not running.
I cannot browse the network from Ubuntu, but I can see the ubuntu machines from the windows including file and printing.
Nautilus gives the following error:
Could not display "network:///".
Nautilus cannot handle "network" locations.
Workgroup names all set the same
Sharing allowed on all machines
I have read all of the postings on this I think and have not been able to implement a solution.
We have two internet connections here, one through Allegro which goes through an ISA 2004 box and an ADSL2+ connection.Everything works fine when connected via the ISA box. Windows machines (and last I checked, a Macbook) work fine on the ADSL2 setup, but nothing Ubuntuesque will work properly through it.DHCP is fine (and the same thing happens with a static IP), it gives a proper address, DNS works fine, it's just whenever a page attempts to load, Firefox will sit at the "Waiting for <site>..." status until it gives up. apt does the same thing.What I've tested it on so far is:
- a homemade 9.10 box
- an IBM xSeries 346 running 10.04
- an Acer Veriton M460 running 10.04
- an Acer Travelmate 6293 running 10.04
None of them will work with it. The Travelmate and the IBM are dual-boot, both will work fine on the connection under Windows. The Veriton is Windows only (tested using a Live CD) and is much the same.The router is a Thompson TG782T (Telsta branded). I'm at a loss with this. Any ideas? I can provide more info if needed.
Can I connect an Iphone to Ubuntu and brows files on it out of box? Or do I need any program for that.. Now I mean axessing files from the memory/mem-card not the phone itself..

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have installed ubuntu a few times in the past but if I've had to get messy with the command line I bailed. So given that I wanted to set up a home server/media center, I tried win server, but given research had told me that it is easier to accomplish all the features I wanted with Linux I decided the time had come to really see what I'd been missing out on. So what I am looking to accomplish is a full lamp stack, xbmc, samba, mail server, VMWare server, rtorrent, ftp, an probably a few others I have forgot because I can't get to my check list right now. Settled on ubuntu 10.10, had installed it a couple of times while it was still in beta, just to get a feel for it and get everything working so that when it was released I could do a fresh install knowing how to configure everything.
So on Sunday the time came. Everything was going fine until last night, I was installing roundtable webmail and all I came to download something and FireFox can't display any web pages, postfix can't deliver mail. The server can ping local machines but not google.com or another internet site, I can ssh into it an get a remote desktop session via various methods, both either over the local network, or internet. The website is getting served both locally or internet. I just cant seem to make any outbound connections to the outside world.
I have a DSL connection, DHCP, able to browse and no problem with that.
But I can't ping websites or their ip address. Should I be worried? I'm using Maverick through Wubi.
I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64-bit and I can't browse the contents of my Cell Phones anymore. I was able to do it with 9.04 but it was a hassle, because if I was not quick enough to acknowledge the request on my phone Ubuntu would get a time out error but after the 3rd try I would usually successfully connect to my phone or if I deleted the phone from the bluetooth and then re add it it would connect on the first try.
With 10.04 when I first installed 10.04 it would connect to my phones without any problems, now it won't connect at all, if I select browse files on device and select a phone it does nothing,no phone response and no error message from Ubuntu, it just sits there like I never tried to access my phones.
I can Send files from Ubuntu to my phones and send files from my phones to Ubuntu but I can't browse the files on my phone from within Ubuntu's Bluetooth program.
I can successfully browse and transfer files in XP running natively and under Virtualbox using Samsung's Program "New PC Studio."
Is there a way to browse the files and directories on an ftp site from the command line similar to how you browse your local directories and files?

I have a D-Link DSL-2640R router, with dhcp disabled. It is connected to my computer via ethernet. I have the network manager configuration set to manual with an address of 192.168.1.2, Mask 255.255.255.0 and the gateway column is blank. I would like to know why my eth0 interface seems to stop me browsing.
I use a T-Mobile HUAWEI usb mobile broadband stick, Model E1750 for internet access. If anyone has any ideas as to why this is happening please discuss them. I have also tried editing the /etc/sysctl.conf file and uncommented the net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 line to enable ipv4 packet forwarding. This has not solved my problem.
