View 14 RepliesI used the command sudo chmod 0750 /home/Gianni to make my home folder private. Now, I would like that another user in my pc can read files in a subdirectory of my home. I was running several commands with chmod and chown and I tried with Nautilus too, but without success. I just would like to place a link on the second user's desktop, that he can click on and access my subdirectory.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've set up smbd 3.4.7 on 10.04x64 LTS server. I've set up a couple shares and I'm having problems blocking access to certain directories using native file permissions. There is one directory that has folders for each sales rep to store their current list of quoted clients, I only want sales people to be able to browse the directories owned by themselves. Everything seems to be set up correctly in terms of user groups and permissions on the filesystem.
Below is marina, a sales rep, and brian, a super user of sorts.
id marina:
Code:
uid=1011(marina) gid=1006(office) groups=1006(office),1005(sales)
id nick:
Code:
uid=1000(brian) gid=1006(office) groups=1006(office),118(admin),1001(full),1002(processing),1003(management),1004(it),1005(sales)
Below is the directory with all the sales reps folders.
ls -la:
Code:
total 60
drwxrwxr-x 15 root it 4096 2011-02-10 20:06 .
drwxr-x--- 9 root office 4096 2010-11-19 12:40 ..
drwxrwx--- 13 katya full 4096 2010-12-07 12:36 Katya
drwxrwx--- 18 lana full 4096 2011-02-08 17:09 Lana
drwxrwx--- 23 marina full 4096 2011-02-10 18:09 Marina
drwxrwx--- 4 mike full 4096 2011-02-01 12:42 Mike
With this setup marina only be able to browse her folder, but she can browse all folders and has full write access to all folders. This leads me to believe something is up with the smbd.conf file, which is below.
Code:
[global]
workgroup = COMTREAD
null passwords = no
server string = Root Server
dns proxy = no
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 1000
syslog = 0 .....
In this case the valid users directive would not work cause I am not making a share for each user. I had this on other shares like the db2 share. My windows box lagged heavily when I tried to access that share with an invalid user. How to deny users the ability to modify permissions I would also like to do that.

I am trying to add new users, when I use the command: # useradd newuser
I get: useradd: cannot create directory /home/users/newuser
I went to my /etc/skel and when I use the command ls it displays:
home
and when I go into /etc/skel/home I have the two directories that I created.
I am logged in as root, and when I ls cd / it shows /home, when I cd into /home everything looks normal.
How do I get this error to stop so I can add new users?
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 as Guest OS with Windows XP as Host using Virtual Box. I have also installed the VirtualBox Guest Additions. Now I want to connect to the internet using my modem.

From the above link, I downloaded the scanModem file from the Host XP. I don't know how to copy that file to the Guest Ubuntu OS.

I couldn't find the /mnt/msdos directory - only /mnt (no files inside that directory). Also, don't know how to paste from the USB drive.
I did following
sudo wget server-name-GNDEC-SMS-Service.tar.gz
sudo tar -zxvf GNDEC-SMS-Service.tar.gz -C /var/www/
then rename it by
sudo mv GNDEC-SMS-Service gn
Then change permission
sudo chmod 777 -Rf gn/
But when i browsed to "localhost/gn" ,it didn't work.in firefox it gives the only black page with no contents and in chrome it says following
Server error The website encountered an error while retrieving http://localhost/gn/. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.
Reload this web page later. HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request.
I have an SFTP server using OpenSSH on a server running Fedora 12. I want to chroot my sftponly users into their home directory but I want to let them have write access to their upload/ folder. Right now users can log in and view & download items, but for some reason I can't get write access to work. Here's some info:
username: testuser
group: sftponly
from /etc/passwd:
testuser:x:501:501::/home/testuser/:/bin/false

I see this questioned asked a lot and figured this tutorialThis tutorial explains how to create an SFTP server which confines (or chroot) users to their own home directory and deny them shell access.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is a simple question which hopefully has a simple answer. How do I set up a directory on my user account which is visible and accessible to other users on the *same machine*? For example I have certain files on my account which, if I want another user to be able to access I'd have to (a) copy them to my thumb drive (b) log out, (c) log in to the other account, (d) copy the files from the usb thumb drive

View 5 Replies View RelatedSamba up and running on my pc. pc runs FC12 with kde. A laptop has win vista. The pc can access the shares on the laptop but the laptop has authentication issues to access the pc. Note that windows doesnt enforce authentication forincoming network connections.Using the system-config-samba util i tried to map a windows user to the unix user "feduser". The laptop (named LAPPY) has a user (lapuser) which has on windows no password.What should I tell samba config what the windows username should be? lapuser or LAPPYlapuser doesnt work because when accessing the pc via the laptop, the authentication fails. The only auth that is successful is when choosing the same winusername as the unix username.
Secondary, id like to setup the laptop so that the user doesnt have to provide a name and password, or at least not more then once in the lifetime of the laptop. Note that you cant provide an empty password to system-config-samba. How is that possible?
Strange but not really on issue imho:the samba - KDE control module(kcmshall4) (and the smb.conf) shows 2 shares: the homedirs and the data dir the samba server configurator (system-config-samba) shows only the datadir.
I am using openSUSE 11.2 with active directory for authentication. I configured it using the Window Domain Membership YaST2 module and I can login successfully (although unreliably). The problem is that I need the UID and GID of the users on my computer to match the UID and GID assigned by Active Directory. Currently it just assigns UIDs and GIDs starting at 10000, which is completely different than the UID and GID used by Active Directory and by other Linux computer runs by the school (those use CentOS). Does anyone know how to get my openSUSE computer to assign UIDs and GIDs from Active Directory?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a small ubuntu server setup and I would like to create a directory that can be written to by a select number of users. I have a backup directory setup and I want to enable my account as well as three others to be able to read/write to that directory. So far I haven't had any luck.
The owner of the backups folder, a directory on a separate disk mounted under /srv/storage, was owned by root and under the root group. I added the group backups and then changed the backups directory group to backups. I then used chown to change the backups directory to 775 to enable group members to write to it. I then tried to touch a file in the backups folder but no such luck. I did notice that when I run groups, my user account isn't shown as belonging to backups but is shown under the /etc/group file. I even made sure the GID of backups is in fact below 1000.
Anyone have an idea on how to create a shared directory that everyone can create, modify and delete any file? I believe my problem is related to the fact that root is the owner of the backups directory.
how to change when running command "adduser" or "useradd" the placement of the users home directory. Have tried editing the /etc/default/useradd file with no results.
I want it to be placed in /var/www And I would also want to know how more folders and files can be created in the home directory automatically.
I have an ftp server and normal login works fine as well as ftps but for some reason sftp sends all my accounts to the root directory of the entire server (not good). Been searching around but can't find a fix.

I'm having trouble breaking down permissions in linux. Here's the scenario. I have two users: UserA & UserB with each having to ownership and access to directories myDirA and myDirB respectively.
UserA --> /source/myDirA
UserB --> /source/myDirB
I need to set the permissions so that userA can access myDirA and myDirB. There are other users and directories but they should not be able to view outside of their own directories (which is the way it is now). I don't have groups set up for them and I'd rather not change anything else but just the permissions.
rwxr_x_r_x UserA
rwxr_x_r_x UserB
They're read/write/exec permissions are identical.
Using CentOS 5.5. I have a handful of users that I need to have connect to my server via sftp and start in the same directory. for example, user1, user2, user3, etc.. will connect via sftp and upon connection will all be in the /some/dir/path/ftp-root directory.I know one way is to create these users all with the same 'home' directory, since by default a user starts in their home directory when connecting via sftp, but before just doing that, I wanted to find out if that is really the appropriate method to use? alternatives? Is there some setting on the sftp server end that could direct all users to one starting directory so that these users don't have to have the same 'home' dir? I'm using the sshd daemon that comes with CentOS 5.5 (with all current updates/patches)
