Ubuntu :: Bottom Tool Bar Disappeared?
May 28, 2010
I've only been using Ubuntu for a few months, a good friend turned me on to it and I definitely like it better than any version of Windows out there, but I'm definitely still learning about it.
I may have clicked on something, but my bottom tool bar totally disappeared and I'm not sure how to get it back. Before it disappeared, none of the windows I had opened were showing up on it either.
To reiterate, I'm not sure what I clicked on to make it disappear, for the most part it just did... :-/
I was using the 9.10 distro and just upgraded to the 10.04 distro. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it either.

So about an hour ago I put my computer on standby. For whatever reason I couldn't bring it back so I restarted it. It works fine except now Ubuntu has pushed my display down. This means that the bottom of my tool-bar on the bottom of the screen is cut off, and there's a black bar on the top. I'm using a T.V. screen so there is no way I can manually adjust it. I also plugged my desktop back into an old monitor and it was off-center downward too.

Everything was working fine and on a new session the panel and bottom bar are no longer showing. I am running xubuntu latest version, with compiz fusion and emerald. I always have to reload windows when i start as I have made it default (perhaps thats part of the pb). Just before it disappeared I installed new updates from the automatic updates. i know i can still access pretty much everything from the right click but the pb is that i can only run one application at a time. as i cannot flip between them nor does the cube or alt tab work.

I upgraded to 11.04 already. Everything worked fine but after a few reboots suddenly the launcher and the top & bottom panel have disappeared. Anyone an idea how to solve this?

I was trying to switch the menu tool bar from the top to the bottom which I successfully done, however the tutorial that I followed first said to right click and delete the lower tool bar. I thought the tutorial would eventually give the instructions to recreate the open window/page tabs in the top of screen but it doesn't. Now each open page overlap each other so I have to collapse each page to see what id below each one.
Firefox is fine, its just when opening up multiple programmes on the desktop.
I'm fine with the 'Terminal' if there's some code to recover this area.

I must have accidentally hit something and as a result the panel at the bottom with the KDE menu and so on is gone. I can recreate widgets and panels but not as the default menu bar at the bottom of the screen. So, now everytime I push something in the background, I have no way to recover it. How do I restore the original default menu bar/panel?

My unity toolbar has disappeared. The old style ubuntu panels have appeared in its place. This was happening on occasion before, but restarting the computer would get rid of it. This time unity has been gone for about a week, through many reboots, driver re-installations, etc.I just installed a new graphics card, which is working fine on the windows partition. Unity would fail to load on occasion with the old card, too. I know the new card works with Ubuntu, because Unity was working fine with it for about a week.
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04. The old card was a GeForce 7900 GT, the new one is a low-profile Sparkle GeForce 8400 GS.

I have been having a problem with the panel on the top of the screen in Ubuntu 10.04. There is supposed to be an applet that shows the time, and when you click on it, it shows a calendar for the month. It has been working until recently, about a few days ago, when I clicked it and it froze. Later, it disappeared and became a small vertical black line on the panel, and all the other icons moved to the right except a few of them. How can I get the calendar applet back?

I have seen several screen shots of Linux and Ubuntu with the bar on the bottom like Mac OS-X. I would like to have this, but still be able to customize the rest of the theme. Is there somewhere you can download this, or what?

I've been running Xubuntu for the past month or two on my Acer Aspire One netbook with very few problems, and generally I've been happy. But this morning, I went to boot up my netbook to check my email and when it booted, I got to my desktop, but the bars at the top and bottom of the desktop are missing. I thought at first that it was hanging during the loading of Xubuntu and that there was a serious problem at hand that might've demanded a reinstall of Xubuntu, but upon further study once I got back to my campus, I discovered that the bars have simply disappeared and that everything else runs fine. When I try to click "Panel" in "Settings", which I'm assuming is where I'd adjust settings for said bars, nothing comes up.
As I think about it, it doesn't seem like a major problem, considering everything else still seems to function fine, but I would like to have them back again.

I have just booted my Ubuntu Karmic and got to the login part and the top & bottom menus have vanished. Any thought as to how i get them back, short of doing a clean install. I had just installed startupmanager, but dont know if that caused the problem or not.

Using UNR10.04 and have an issue where menu screens are hanging off the bottom of the screen. Happens pretty regularly, but for example, a moment ago, I was trying to switch to Google Public DNS, in the network preferences, have to click apply/ok but cannot do so as the menu box is larger than the screen. Is there a way to scroll down or make the window smaller so that I can click buttons outside standard screen.

I installed 10.04 twice on a recycled 10 year old Dell, using both a regular and an alternative live CD. With both installs, there were no top or bottom Gnome panels when I started up so I could not access the programs, make changes, etc. A message appeared asking if I wanted to delete the aplets (or panel?) the first time I started it up. I answered yes with the regular CD and no with the alternative, but did not see the massage again.

I have a slight problem with an applet I'm trying to run. I don't have problems running any other java applets from other websites or anything but for some reason the applet I developed shows the gray-screen and says 'Start: applet not initialized.' at the bottom.
There are no errors in the error console.Java is working on my web browser (mozilla firefox).I'm running Ubuntu 10.10.Here's my code, the program is for my friend and she uses a mac, so is this issue specific for Ubuntu? I made the applet using Eclipse Ganymede.
Code:
import java.awt.*;
import java.applet.*;[code].....
The .class file, .au song, and .html file are all in the same directory.
