I have been using a Windows XP virtual machine for a couple of years now. After upgrading the host operating system from Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 11.04 I cannot power on the virtual machine anymore. The error message is:
"Unable to change virtual machnie power state: internal error"

As the title suggests, I am running Ubuntu inside a VMWare environment. I did the upgrade to narwhal and I see the boot-up screen just fine but when I get to the screen to log in to my Ubuntu account this is where Ubuntu freezes up completely and I get nothing out of it at all. I do have VMWare upgraded to the latest version that is available as well.

I was using Maverick, I performed upgrade to Natty today morning and rebooted and it was working fine. Then I turned off my PC and left home.
Now in the evening when I'm trying to boot nothing happens, just black screen. Nothing happens after that.
Though I can boot by selecting "Previous Version" but can't boot normally. Though I was surprised that even after selecting "previous version" I was booted in to Natty(I guess so, as the UI is Unity not GNOME).
But can't boot using the Kernel that's listed first in my Menu.
I have a freshly installed, updated Fedora 11 installation for which the VMWare Tools fails. It can't compile what it needs, either. It's running under ESXi 3.x.

I have a D-Link DNS-323 network drive which mounts at multiple points to my filesystem when booting. I had to make some fstab changes when I upgraded from 11.2->11.3 last year, and now the same thing seems to be happening since I've upgraded to 11.4. When I login to my profile the desktop hangs and no icons appear. I cannot open a Nautilus window, or access ALT-F2, however just about every other program works fine. Since I disabled the fstab lines (slightly modified when copied here to generalize):

Tonight I started the upgrade to Squeeze on both servers and one of them went smooth. The other one started out good but fails on the postconfiguration of openssh-server. It looks like there's an error in one of the files in openssh-server that prohibits it from installing correctly. However on the other server it all went well.

I was upgrading our lab's dhcp server to Lucid and it totally died. I have it running on a Debian recovery cd right now. I ran into a bug in gtk which I seem to have fixed, but now I have more serious errors. If I boot without a CD, I get dumped into a busybox shell after the machine fails to boot. From the live CD, I tried dist-upgrading again and it dies trying to build and install rsyslog with a broken pipe error. I am at a loss as to what to do from here short of reinstalling (which is the last option as this server has a lot of custom configs on it)
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have installed the latest version of Ubuntu Linux (11.04) into latest VMware workstation (7.1.4 build-385536). I have tried to install the VMware tools ISO that came with VMware workstation but It didn't work and the installation seemed real sloppy anyways.
I installed the open VMware tools from synaptic within the guest linux and restarted, everything seemed to have been installed just fine but VMware Workstation doesn't detect it. I'm not sure if the tools are outdated, silent errors happened, or if any manual post installation steps need to be taken.

Is it possible to install Snow Leopard 10.6.6 VMware AMD edition (which I downloaded) on VMware linux? It is under Windows 7 so I just need to know if everything of VMware linux (like Hardware Virtualization) is the same under linux as for Windows.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI completed the installation of VMWare Server 2.0.2 onto a CentOS 5.4 64-bit distribution. There is a VMware virtual machine file on the server in question, and I want to activate it through the application console.
I did not see anything readily apparent that would facilitate the importing of the virtual machine file. Does anyone have a procedure that can accomplish this task?
I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.

I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.
I'm trying to access the VMWare console from firefox using the VMWare plugin. The problem is that it doesn't work on Firefox version 3.6.8. So how can I access the console?

I am trying to upgrade RH9 to F10. I have downloaded dvd iso image i386. The SHA1 integrity check passes. The installer fails media check due to "errors". I did an independent verification of the DVD and zero errors found. Download was from Fedora's own torrent, so files should be verified anyway. I am running Windows 7 and wanted to install VMWare and Ubuntu on it. So I downloaded VMware and the Ubuntu install files but I got stuck on the Language prompt. So I researched and downloaded Ubuntu alternate iso file and the install went fine.
I now launch VMWare and get a prompt for username and Password which I enter.
My Windows Vista installation won't start after upgrading from Karmic to Lucid. If I select it on GRUB2, it leaves a blinking cursor on screen. And I tried doing the whole test disk thing and the boot info script. This is what my Results.txt file says

I've upgraded the generic kernel of my Xubuntu Karmic AMD64 persistent USB installation with the ubuntustudio realtime kernel (2.6.31.9.10). The thing is that the generic kernel is still loading as default and I don't have the option on the boot menu to choose the new one. I don't know how to edit this Grub2 version (grub-pc 1.97 beta 4).I haven't found a GUI package for this either.

I suspect this is a problem with Mozilla Firefox 3.6.3.
I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 2.6.32-10-generic today. After a succesful update that fixed a couple of nagging problems on my laptop (nice work guys) I started VMware Workstation. I got the expected "Before you can run VMware, several modules must be compiled..."
The compile errors out and points to the setup log. I have searched and found several very similar posts all relating to build-essential or kernel-headers not being installed. I have verified both are installed and up to date.

I had installed Karmik Koala on VMware� Player 3.0.1 build-227600 and it ran perfectly well for four months. Today I upgraded to Lucid Lynx (lts) from within the VMware Player. The virtual machine restarted after the installation, now I can't direct my keyboard input to log in to my Ubuntu account. The mouse works but not the keyboard. How do I resolve this mess?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed VMWare Player 3.1 on Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit and had the program show up in the applications menu. I opened and ran a prebuilt virtual machine without any problem. After shutting down the system, the next morning Player is gone, if I try to reinstall it shows that it is already installed, and if I try to open the virtual hard drive, it says that no applications is associated with that file type. There is no Player in the list of applications.
