Ubuntu :: Banshee = Fans Running Hard?

Apr 28, 2011

I'm finally making the change away from rhythmbox for the now adopted Banshee and I'm noticing that my fans run really hard when I'm running banshee. I'm monitoring speeds and don't notice a huge increase in temp but the fans none the less run hard. CPU usage is running around 6% for banshee not nearly enough to cause this fairly large laptop so having the fans run hard make it a bit loud when around others

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.4 Upgrade, Xorg, Cpu, Fans Gone Nuts Running High/low?

Apr 28, 2010

I upgraded my Asus Eeepc 900a to 10.4 yesterday. Since then, Xorg has averaged between 30-40% CPU, and my fans have gone nuts running high/low/high/low, ad nausium.

Any ideas what might be going on? Another clue perhaps: on reboot or shutdown, I get a "program not responding" message with "unknown" as the hung program. I have not been able to determine what this program is or if it is related to the hyperactive Xorg.

I already did sensors-detect, but I get this message every time.

Code:
Sorry, no sensors were detected.

This is relatively common on laptops, where thermal management is handled by ACPI rather than the OS.

Hardware :: Bad To Plug Case Fans Into Motherboard?

Jul 8, 2010

I am going to upgrading the cooling in my computer, so I bought 3 case fans (the amount my case has room for). They have 4 pin connectors, so I was just going to plug 2 of them into the 2 available fan headers, and then plug the last one into a molex connector considering that they all come with molex adaptors. However, according to this site, your not supposed to because its too much strain on the motherboard? I am not (never have never will) overclocking so is that just for overclockers? My motherboard manual says it will work with 12 volt fans which are what these are.

Software :: Sudden Shutdown/poweroff -- No, It's Not Bad Hardware Or Dirty Fans?

Nov 9, 2010

I just did a clean reinstall of Ubuntu (10.04 --> 10.10). After the install, any time I do CPU intensive work, my PC is suddenly shutting down like it's overheating.Everything was working fine for months, and started having problems immediately after the reinstall. so this is not a problem with my hardware, and it's not a problem with my fans needing cleaning -- it's a problem with software. So please don't tell me "that sounds like overheating, clean your fans". Something is different in software-land between 10.04 and 10.10 that is causing this to happen -- I assure you that the upgrade did not magically fill my fans with cat hair.

I have checked my log files, and can't find anything related to overheating -- searches for things related to lm_sensors, "temp", and "thermal" are not turning up anything in the system logs (syslog, kern.log, or messages). I also looked at the logs around the times of the sudden shutdown, and couldn't find anything unusual. How can I diagnose this? I'd like to file a bug report, but since I can't find anything in the logs, I honestly have no idea how to go about providing useful information. Is there anything besides overheating that might be causing my laptop to suddenly shut off?

Ubuntu :: Running Out Of Hard Drive Space

Jun 13, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my laptop and then upgraded it to Ubuntu 10.4. I've added some software packages along the way, such as MythTV and several smaller apps, but have not gone crazy in adding apps. I have a 160GB hard drive.I ran out of disk space recording a World Cup game and was surprised. I deleted all of the MythTV recordings and ran Computer Janitor and now I have only about 50GB of free space! It is not my primary computer, so I don't have a bunch of videos, music, pr pictures on it.

I did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.4 to a USB flash drive and it has only 3.7GB occupied on the drive.Any recommendations of why I have over 100GB on the hard drive and any cures on how to clear out unneeded files?

Ubuntu Installation :: ISO Image Of An Entire Hard Drive Running A OS?

Dec 3, 2010

Does anybody know how to or even if it's possible to create an ISO image (a snapshot, if you will) of an entire volume on a Linux box so that I can use that ISO to burn to a CD use in the future for creating an identical configuation on another box (which would have the same exact hardware)? It is to my understanding that I'd have to first create the ISO file of the entire system and then burn it to a CD and somehow mount it onto the hard drive of the identical-system-to-be.

I'm thinking that I'd have to use the "mkisofs" command but I'm not sure exactly how to do this. P.S. I do not want to use any 3rd party applications.

Ubuntu :: Existing Rsync Running And Copying Info To Hard Drive?

Nov 30, 2010

I have a home network that includes a couple of computers {A, B, C, D}. currently, I have a cron jon that runs every minute and updates (using rsync) the hard drives of computers {B, C, D} with the contents of hard drive {A}. So far everything works great, as hard drive {A} barely has any information on it. Now, I am about to copy a lot of information (about 8 GBs) to hard drive {A}. Naturally, the cron job will run (as it runs every 1-min) and try to 'sync' the contents with hard drives {B, C, D}.

Given my network (100Mbit/sec), there is no way the cron job will be able to 'copy' the contents to hard drives {B, C, D} in one minute. It will take much more time. Does this situation create a problem? meaning, will cron re-run a new rsync instance 1min later, even though an existing rsync process is running and still copying information to hard drives {B,C,D}? Will my backups be hurt / slowed down tremendously because of this?

Hardware :: Adding A LVM Hard Disk To A System Already Running/using LVM?

Aug 9, 2010

I have two systems, both having file systems running on LVM. System No 1 has 2 PATA HDD (40 and 80 GB) running linux on LVM. System 2 has a single SATA HDD (300 GB) which again uses LVM. What i was trying to do was to add the two HDD in system 1 to system 2, possibly with little or no data loss. So i connected the PATA drives from system 1 to system 2 and booted up. The system booted up to the openSUSE 11.3 splash screen and stopped after scanning the HDDs. Frankly i never expected openSUSE to try n auto mount the new drives. I think the problem was caused because both the systems had VG and LV of the same names. Can the volume group be renamed, maybe from a live CD or somthing?? System 2 is not boot able now.

Ubuntu :: Comp Fans Stay On Low And Comp Too Hot

May 25, 2010

I have noticed a really bad problem on here that i never had on windows 7 even with overclocking.

It seems the fans stay on and are basically idling or are at minimum speed and the computer and graphics cores are just idling at 99c which is really dangerous, but not critical yet since this is an alienware laptop and the technician did say its temperature rating is above that.

The problem is I need to get the multiple fans in the case to start up and cranking like they do to keep the system really cool in windows 7. I kinda wanna get this fixed ASAP as i dont want to constantly be running at this temperature.

CentOS 5 :: Build A Bootable System Image On An Attached Hard Disk On A Running Machine?

Feb 27, 2011

I would like to build a bootable system image on an attached hard disk on a running CentOS machine. The hard disk would be moved to a headless server, where only SSH access would be available. It seems that all the documented install methods assume that the installation runs on the taget machine. In this case, I would like to create a bootable system image of CentOS on a running host system. The new install mage would generally have a newer version of CentOS than the running host system where the image is created. Also, I would prefer
to do a text-based install.

The reason for all this is that I have network access to several remote machines. I can ask disks to be moved between machines, but I have no physical access. In order to do software testing, I would like to have several system disks with different installed CentOS versions. It would be easer if I could build the system disks on one single machine. The hardware an all machines is very nearly identical.

OpenSUSE Install :: Grub Error 18 - Unknown File System - Running From External Hard Drive

Jan 11, 2011

It started when I wanted to dual boot Windows 7 and Opensuse off of my netbook (No DVD/CD drive) I tried install suse from an external hard drive and I botched it. I ended up erasing EVERYTHING off of my internal netbook hard drive. Windows and all.

Well, I had a couple of other computers so I studied up and eventually successfully installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my external hard drive (11.3 being the one that I accidentally erased everything with, so kinda scared of it) and now I want to install openSUSE 11.2 on my internal netbook hard drive.

I can not use disks

I can not use a flash drive (For some reason, even if I make it bootable, it will not load up, this could be because it's actually a 8GB microSD card that is placed in a USB card reader.)

I can not use an external hard drive because that's what I'm running suse off of.

I've tried reading up on how to install suse on another drive off of the hard drive and I've gotten as far as whenever I boot up the netbook with the suse external hard drive connected it will ask to boot into OpenSUSE, the Fail Safe, or to install OpenSuse. When I select to install it it gives me the Error 18 Unknown File system.

I've tried formatting the internal hard drive twice. One as NTFS and again as EXT4. Neither seems to effect it other than when it's ext4 I can open it and it contains a Lost and Found folder.

When I interrupt the boot sequence by pressing c and going to the terminal and I use the root (hd +TAB command it tells me I have a hd0 and a hd1. The hd1 only has 1 partition which is ext4, which I'm assuming hd1 is the internal hard drive (I'm not sure how to check) and the hd0 is the external hard drive, which has three partitions. One with an unknown file system and two with ext4. When I try to enter the set up from the terminal it gives me the same error for any thing I put it (e.g. root (hd0,0) gives the same error as root (hd0,1), or root (hd0,2) and root (hd1,0)

Something like it cannot locate these two files I'm assuming it needs to boot. If anyone finds this relevant I'll retry it and post the files its missing.

I've been searching for awhile and can't find any threads that can solve my problem. From other threads, however, I have noticed that I should probably include my menu.lst, listed below

Code:

I have also ran the boot info script and received the RESULTS.txt file it generates. Listed below

Code:

Server :: Way To Backup A Web Server With One Hard Drive Running Live?

Mar 13, 2011

I currently have a centos 4.4 I believe running with a 250GB hard drive. I want to make an image of that hard drive. I have tried removing the drive and connecting it to my windows pc using an adapter that would allow my windows machine run the hard drive as it was a regular external hard drive. Of course windows doesn't reconize that drive since it is linux partitioned. I am thinking that I need to have the hard drive inthe box I am wanting to copy and put in a blank drive in the box that I want to copy to. And boot from a live CD and use cat or dd to copy it. I have seen the commands before bust I am thinking this is the only way. Basically I am wanting to have a duplicate of the drive and build a whole new server that is already all setup.I will just change the host name and assign it another Public facing UP. Is this correct? Oh, and the new server will have different hardware. Might even be AMD or intel different from source or destination.

CentOS 5 :: Running Centos From USB As Hard Disk?

I have seen that is possible to boot from a USB stick and use a USB memory as hard drive.I have a server enable to hold 6 sata drives 3.5", But I want to use the 6 drives and make a Raid-5 setup for backups 5 -1 spare. /boot cannot be on a raid-5 level 0 or 1. But I want to have redundancy for my OS, them I can install Centos on a Raid-1 using 2 disk, which let me only 4 for the raid 5. I will run a backup I want to have a lot of space.

Using 4 disk for raid-5 2 TB I will have 6TB no spare, no spare is not a good option at least I will prefer 1 spare.Well, I was thinking, the server MoBo have USB support, if I open the box I can see the small entrances, If Centos let me installed on a USB memory drive, can I trust a USB memory stick?t night with bacula.
