my computer sounds as if I have been playing crysis warhead for like 5 hours, because every fan in my computer is running including the graphics card. They are not just running normal either they are running at the max.

I'm monitoring speeds and don't notice a huge increase in temp but the fans none the less run hard. CPU usage is running around 6% for banshee not nearly enough to cause this fairly large laptop so having the fans run hard make it a bit loud when around others
View 1 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my Asus Eeepc 900a to 10.4 yesterday. Since then, Xorg has averaged between 30-40% CPU, and my fans have gone nuts running high/low/high/low, ad nausium.
Any ideas what might be going on? Another clue perhaps: on reboot or shutdown, I get a "program not responding" message with "unknown" as the hung program. I have not been able to determine what this program is or if it is related to the hyperactive Xorg.
I have an HP ProLiant DL560 server with Debian 6.0 installed and cannot figure out how to get the fans to run at anything except high. I have searched google and this site, but cannot find anything that works on Debian 6; the SLES packages will install, but don't do anything.

I am running a minimal debian "Squeeze" system with xfce and recently noticed a marked slowdown in my samsung nc10 netbook performance; with all other applications closed htop revealed the following process eating up cpu which explains the slowdown. I'm running Ultimate Edition 2.0 64bit. When I'm running Firefox and I'm not doing anything on it it starts to use the disk intensively. I checked on terminal using the top command and it IS Firefox using up to 85-90% of the resources. Anyone know what the problem is here? Can it be hacked? I already uninstalled and installed back again and it still doing it.

Everything was fine for the first 6 months. Now in the past couple weeks, my disk drive is running nearly constantly. I can hear it rattling away in the background no matter what I am doing. Typically, I just have Firefox open, and that disk drive is sounding like it's writing the whole thing over and over.
I've opened the system monitor and looked for something obvious, but everything says, "sleeping". The computer seems to operate fine - no crashes, no odd behavior. What's this thing doing?
Anywhere from 2 -> 6 times a day, my computer will freeze up. If any audio was playing, it will repeat the last few seconds over and over again. I've been dealing with the problem for a couple of months now, with no solutions.
View 1 Replies View Relatedthis isn't so much slackware specific as it is general linux related, but using the default huge slackware kernel included with 13.1, acpi reports cpu temps of about 55 celsius i always like to run my own kernels though, and using the latest stable kernel, i have compiled one using what i believe is necessary for my hardware, and everything works as expected except that acpi reports my cpu temp as 80 celsius at idle, causing my fan to be running constantly
so without simply using the generic config included with slack in the newer kernel, what do you think might be causing the thermal issues? i used diff on the two configs and the output is over 5,000 lines, so thats not a huge help, and im really not even sure what to be looking for the cpu is an intel i7 720qm, so if anyone might know any specific settings for that processor type needed for acpi to interface with it properly that would be much obliged here is my config for potential review: [URL] also, if i disable acpi entirely, the fan operates as normal but i cannot get readings obviously

I have problem with funs speed in my fujitsu rx100 s6 server, rpm funs is 3000 ? I think it is not standard speed funs. On windows 2008 server funs works quietly. Fujitsu supports only windows servers, red-hat enterp. and suse enterp. Is there any software to control speed fans?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am going to upgrading the cooling in my computer, so I bought 3 case fans (the amount my case has room for). They have 4 pin connectors, so I was just going to plug 2 of them into the 2 available fan headers, and then plug the last one into a molex connector considering that they all come with molex adaptors. However, according to this site, your not supposed to because its too much strain on the motherboard? I am not (never have never will) overclocking so is that just for overclockers? My motherboard manual says it will work with 12 volt fans which are what these are.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just did a clean reinstall of Ubuntu (10.04 --> 10.10). After the install, any time I do CPU intensive work, my PC is suddenly shutting down like it's overheating.Everything was working fine for months, and started having problems immediately after the reinstall. so this is not a problem with my hardware, and it's not a problem with my fans needing cleaning -- it's a problem with software. So please don't tell me "that sounds like overheating, clean your fans". Something is different in software-land between 10.04 and 10.10 that is causing this to happen -- I assure you that the upgrade did not magically fill my fans with cat hair.
I have checked my log files, and can't find anything related to overheating -- searches for things related to lm_sensors, "temp", and "thermal" are not turning up anything in the system logs (syslog, kern.log, or messages). I also looked at the logs around the times of the sudden shutdown, and couldn't find anything unusual.How can I diagnose this? I'd like to file a bug report, but since I can't find anything in the logs, I honestly have no idea how to go about providing useful information.Is there anything besides overheating that might be causing my laptop to suddenly shut off?

I have noticed a really bad problem on here that i never had on windows 7 even with overclocking.
It seems the fans stay on and are basically idling or are at minimum speed and the computer and graphics cores are just idling at 99c which is really dangerous, but not critical yet since this is an alienware laptop and the technician did say its temperature rating is above that.
The problem is I need to get the multiple fans in the case to start up and cranking like they do to keep the system really cool in windows 7. I kinda wanna get this fixed ASAP as i dont want to constantly be running at this temperature.
I've managed to install the 32bit version on my laptop with little issue, and I'm really liking the Unity interface. There's a few issues around customisation and minor usability quirks, but from my experience with things like KDE4, I'm guessing it's only time. Anyway, I've been having major problems getting the 64bit version running with my Desktop. I have 8Gb of RAM in that, so it's not really an option to use the 32bit version. The Installer crashes constantly, but I was able to upgrade from 10.10 using update manager, but unfortunately Natty is no more stable than it's installer.
While logging in, or shortly after, the machine will crash to a text console displaying a Kernel Panic message. There's also messages indicating a problem with the CPU MCE. I've tried setting various kernel parameters at boot, such as nomce and nomodeset, these have extended the time the machine is up before crashing out, and removed the Kernel panic message, but not the crashes. I'm guessing the MCE messages were unrelated or a symptom in this case.I've done a huge amount of searching, and found no suggestions that I haven't already tried. Running Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit the system is rock solid.
I think I have found the problem to my Ubuntu laptop locking up, and it is most likely overheating. Is there any way to keep the CPU fan spinning at 100% constantly? I tried setting it up in the BIOS but it is an old laptop and I can't control it from there.

Any ideas? It wasn't doing this before and don't remember doing anything to make it happen but I have been tweaking a bit while setting up the machine.

I looked at iotop to find the culprit, and it seems to be the journalling manager for the ext4 filesystems:

I have installed Ubuntu from scratch several times since this problem started in Ubuntu 9*. It happens over and over again, and nothing seems to help.
My grasphic card is Nvidia 8500 GT. No matter what I try, to use no hardware drivers or use the recommended driver for Ubuntu my system shuts down without warning. I have used Ubuntu since 2004 and this is the worst bug I have ever experienced!

Lasdt night I was busy installing WinXP when my computer suddenly turned off, and Ubuntu could not be started again. Only show a screen with black and white parts and no desktop. I am running 10.04 beta right now, on a hp a6740in , I have wireless usb adapter WG111v3 with me for connecting to my home network , It works perfect in windows but i am trying to get working it with Ubuntu since the past year. In 10.04 beta , It MAY connects for sometime and then drops out,trying to connect again and again, asking me to review the password each time.
I have also filed a bug about the same some 6-7 months month ago, but the ubuntu community seems busy with many other things. So i decided finally posting on the forum again , hoping to get a working solution this time(previous was when jaunty launched) This is the only thing that keeps me away from using ubuntu for my general day work, I have already searched through ubuntu forums but always end up with ndiswrapper thing which doesnt works.
My disks are constantly being remounted as read only. Even after I manually mount them and explicitly specify the rw option, after a while I find they have become read only. Needless to say, working like that is impossible. Fortunately the root partition is not affected, but every other partition is.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWe've had a very big problem with our computer chrashing for a while, and I'm not sure if it's Linux Ubuntu that's the problem or not be we'd like some feedback from the experts of this forum. I hope I'm posting this in the right place. So, a while back we had Windows XP on our machine, and it had been running well (as well as XP is capable anyway, ), but for some reason it wouldn't boot XP properly and would only allow us to open it in Safe Mode.
We opened up the computer to take the memory chips out and back in, just in case that would help, and the inside was terribly dusty. Also, we have a loose heatsink, and the chip underneath is filled with dust. Not sure what the chip is I'll try to get some picture of it pretty soon. Anyway, the inside of the machine obviously wasn't too good.
So, we installed Linux Ubuntu LTS 10.04 on it from a CD to try to fix the booting problem, and this worked -- but now, our computer crashes constantly after turning on. It crashes whatever we're doing -- we can do something light, like Google Chrome, or something heavy, like video editing, and have it crash on us. So it doesn't seem to be a problem with the programs or anything -- I'm guessing it's either an issue with the computer itself or an error with the operating system. Sometimes we're lucky and can be on the computer for half-hour to and hour and a half, but it's still really bothersome, and will get in the way of any projects that require saving or recording. I'd guess it crashes around 10-20 times a day.

Why is ubuntuone constantly uploading something at a rate of 10Kbps? I am not even logged into it.I have deleted it completely just to stop the constant 10Kbps uploading, but still, I am interested to know what was being transmitted.
