I'd like to make regular backups of my flash drives, but I don't plug them in regularly. Because of this, I can't just use a scheduled backup application to back them up. Does anyone know of an incremental backup application that will automatically run backups on media as soon as it's mounted?
View 1 RepliesI'm just setting up a partition on a seperate HDD in my system. I plan to use the partition to backup the important files on my main HDD (to guard against HD crash).
The question I have is about where would be the typical location to auto mount this partition? Which would it be normal to go for:
1. /backup/
2. /media/backup/
3. /mnt/backup/
4. /home/chris/backup/
I'm running Xubuntu 9.10 on an older machine. I've got a flash drive (called "TF_FLASH") plugged into a USB hub. I am using simplebackup to backup my documents (I'm writing my thesis and that is really the only important thing on this computer).
The problem I am having is this: simplebackup will run and backup my files once or twice (I have it set up to go overnight). After that, though, the name of the flash drive changes (from "TF_FLASH" to "TF_FLASH_" - note the extra underscore at the end). So, simplebackup cannot find the drive. If I go into the settings of simplebackup and change the backup destination to "TF_FLASH_" it will work once or twice, but the drive will change to "TF_FLASH__" - again an additional underscore.
I don't know if the name change is being caused by Xubuntu, simplebackup, or some other method. The USB hub is a cheap one, but I don't think that's the problem (my mouse is plugged in and continues to function, etc.).
So I finally got my own flash drive(I know, I'm late) and I really don't know what to do with it except store my files and OS's.
I heard that it's possible to boot up my desktop of Ubuntu with a flash drive. If so, how?
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 and would like to know how to backup a whole flash drive to a single image.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIts annoying to unmount my flash drive twice.. its not a major problem actually but its kinda annoying , its whenever i plug-in my flash drive.. everything works well except when i need to un-mount it.. I usually unmount it twice using right-click of the mouse, then it mounts itself back, so i have to unmount it again.. Is there any way to control this? How do i setup the auto-mount option for USB flash drives?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI keep a backup of a bunch of files on a flash drive, so that whenever I change distributions I can just restore all my Android stuff (saves on re-downloading everything). One of these is the Android SDK.
In my ~/.bashrc I add the paths to some executables in the SDK, only if the directory exists, and only if the path is not already in $PATH. For the Android NDK this works fine, but for the SDK I get this:

Now, I've saw something similar to this before whenever you move an executable from one place to another. If you don't re-source your bash config it will continue to keep looking wherever it used to be located. But I've never moved these files.
i bought i 32gb transcend flashdrive mainly to t0 another os.. but the problem is it doesnt mount in ubuntu 10.10 but is mounts in windows. when i type lsusb in my terminal after inserting ang again after removing it i see that there is one usb device which is shown when flash drive is inserted and dissapears when i remove my flash drive

Geting an error special device does not exist. sda1 is my hdd, also tried sdc sdd
is there a way to allow a program mounting a drive without requiring it to ask for sudo password (apart from running it with sudo)? To be more specific, I'm annoyed by the sudo password request by TrueCrypt whenever it needs to mount a volume.
I've thought about creating another user, allowing it to mount volumes and then running TrueCrypt as this user at boot. I don't know whether GNU/Linux allows for such policies... maybe I should look into SELinux?
EDIT: For the issue at hand (encrypted USB stick both on Windows and Linux), I'm investigating FreeOTFE. I'm still curious about the privileges issue, anyway.
I've found some older threads with the same problem and read a few bug reports also. Nobody has a solution that has worked for me.How can I get Ubuntu 10.10 to be able to use something as basic as a usb drive?
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy Fedora does not auto detect a flash drive if I get to attach it with the OS already running. I still have to make a reboot and attached the drive right from the start in order for it to be detected/mounted.
Unlike In Mint 7, Ubuntu and XP, it automatically detects the flash drive as soon as it is attached.
make my Fedora detect the flash drive so that I would not have to reboot everytime I would use it.

I am trying to setup my ubuntu machine to automatically log some data I am trying to collect and write the data to a flash drive. I have everything setup so that when the machine boots up it starts that logging process. The problem I am having is that sometimes (not always) ubuntu creates a directory with the same path that I expect my flash drive to mount to i.e., /media/data/ then my flash drive instead mounts to /media/data_/. I need to know the path of the flash drive so I can store my data on it.

I get no desktop icons and I have checked the box in "config-whatever", The Flash Drive will appear in HardDrake but the MP3 player will not. The MP3 player will appear in the "Computer File" but will not manually mount.

I have two questions regarding auto mount function of Truecrypt. First question:
I want to automatically mount my flash drive encrypted by Truecrypt using a keyfile whenever I plug the drive. How can I do this? I use Ubuntu 10.10.
Second question:
As I do not know the answer of my first question, I currently use following command in a startup script to mount my encrypted flash drive automatically at every system start-up.

My problem with this method is, Truecrypt always search for the drive in the same path saved in favorite drives list, e.g. /dev/sdb1. However sometimes there are more than one flash drive plugged to my computer and my encrypted drive's path changes. In such cases Truecrypt cannot mount my encrypted drive because it cannot find the drive in its path.
As a workaround I tried "auto-mount=devices" parameter. It is slow because it checks every mounted drive, and some of them external hard disk big in size. Moreover it does not recognize any mount point parameter. I'd like to mount the drive to the same mount point every time.

I recently upgraded to Gnome 2.30 and now usb drives don't auto-mount and show-up in Nautilus as a device.
I can mount the drive manually, but it would be nice if this happened automatically when I plugged it in.
I'm a NOOB to CentOS and Linux in general. I've been trying to find a way to mount my USB flash drive (FAT32) so I can see my files. I've been told that I need to add a USB controller. My CentOS is running as a VMWARE guest in WS7 loaded on a Vista host. My physical hardware is a Toshiba Satellite notebook. I've been told I have to add a USB controller before I can mount. Can anybody give me some direction with this?

In my user manager, I don't know wich group I have to add to this simple user (it's me) so I am allowed to manage the usb key.
I am relatively new to Fedora 15, but used 13 for a while with no issues. Yesterday a windows user put a flash drive into my computer for me to copy something on to. (This may be conincidental.) I then put the computer into suspend or hibernate or whatever and now it won't start up. At all. And I'm stuck as 'everything' I need is on that computer.
View 1 Replies View RelatedDue to the lack of a CD burner (at least one that works properly) I've been trying to install Debian on my laptop from a USB drive. I extracted the ISO contents onto my drive, made an entry in GRUB (on the flash drive - I'm booting from it) and can successfully begin the installation, but when it tries to mount the CD-ROM, obviously it can't, as there isn't one. I tried mounting the flash drive partition with the ISO contents to /cdrom manually, but I don't seem to be able to do so. I either get "No such device" or "Invalid argument". I CAN, however, mount the FAT32 partition of that flash drive (which oddly enough I cannot mount in Windows - go figure). The partition I need to mount is ext2. All of the partitions show up in /dev as well as /proc/filesystems.
Also, I'm using the netinstall to save space on my flash drive. ( http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/...86-netinst.iso )

I made a persistent install of Ubuntu on a flash drive. I made changes to that installation. The software (Unetboontin) sets this all up. I think it partitions it for you. How do I image that flash drive to another flash drive?

a) Scenario: GRUB crashes or is modified/deleted.. (Obviously not due to ME... I'm and expert even though I just installed OpenSuse 11.4.... about 10 seconds ago..... if you know what I mean).
b) Scenario: Installed/Updated SOMETHING and everything went weird.. (can't boot, nothing runs, KDE/GNOME is dead, end up at a command prompt but I don't know any commands!!!)
Now I had an excellent OpenSuse running..... WHAT do I download to backup, WHAT do I back up so I can do a FRESH Operating System install (SuSe) and restore the rest (or most of it).

I am looking for an application to assist me to back up my sim card on my mobile telephone. In fact I am aiming to copy all my phone contacts and restore it on a newer phone if possible.

My manager at work asked me to setup an FTP server running LINUX. i had a post about some custom scripts and commands that i needed, so after i configured and set everything up, i got another assignment....here we go, i need to come up with a way of backing up the entire system, or creating a script that will setup,install and configure the FTP related features i have made working there.i am wondering what would be the most ideal/best and easy to do way to back up the system? the goal is : in case if HDD fails,r anything goes wrong.system can be restored in no time. this is still up in air thing, i offered taking some time on a weekend and setting up same system on say,ew drive, and swapping them when one goes bad... but what would be an alternatives
