Ubuntu :: Flash Drive Changes Name On Backup?

I'm running Xubuntu 9.10 on an older machine. I've got a flash drive (called "TF_FLASH") plugged into a USB hub. I am using simplebackup to backup my documents (I'm writing my thesis and that is really the only important thing on this computer).
The problem I am having is this: simplebackup will run and backup my files once or twice (I have it set up to go overnight). After that, though, the name of the flash drive changes (from "TF_FLASH" to "TF_FLASH_" - note the extra underscore at the end). So, simplebackup cannot find the drive. If I go into the settings of simplebackup and change the backup destination to "TF_FLASH_" it will work once or twice, but the drive will change to "TF_FLASH__" - again an additional underscore.
I don't know if the name change is being caused by Xubuntu, simplebackup, or some other method. The USB hub is a cheap one, but I don't think that's the problem (my mouse is plugged in and continues to function, etc.).

I heard that it's possible to boot up my desktop of Ubuntu with a flash drive. If so, how?

I'd like to make regular backups of my flash drives, but I don't plug them in regularly. Because of this, I can't just use a scheduled backup application to back them up. Does anyone know of an incremental backup application that will automatically run backups on media as soon as it's mounted?

I keep a backup of a bunch of files on a flash drive, so that whenever I change distributions I can just restore all my Android stuff (saves on re-downloading everything). One of these is the Android SDK.
In my ~/.bashrc I add the paths to some executables in the SDK, only if the directory exists, and only if the path is not already in $PATH. For the Android NDK this works fine, but for the SDK I get this:

Everything else is fine though, just that one path is causing trouble.
Now, I've saw something similar to this before whenever you move an executable from one place to another. If you don't re-source your bash config it will continue to keep looking wherever it used to be located. But I've never moved these files.

I'm just setting up a partition on a seperate HDD in my system. I plan to use the partition to backup the important files on my main HDD (to guard against HD crash).
The question I have is about where would be the typical location to auto mount this partition? Which would it be normal to go for:
1. /backup/
2. /media/backup/
3. /mnt/backup/
4. /home/chris/backup/

I made a persistent install of Ubuntu on a flash drive. I made changes to that installation. The software (Unetboontin) sets this all up. I think it partitions it for you. How do I image that flash drive to another flash drive?

Back in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.
I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.
Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??
I have 3 seperat drives, 2 x 16 gigs and an 8 gig, and was wandering which one would be best for booting off of? What do I look for??

I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

I have a Transcend 4GB USB flash drive that suddenly stopped working. However, when I insert it into the USB slot, the light on the drive glows, but I'm unable to mount the drive, neither does ubuntu detect it.I disconnected the flash drive, and then run `dmesg | tail`. The result was this :

Is there a way to create aptoncd back up on a pen drive? Meaning when I insert a cd created with aptoncd an autorun dialog box appears asking if I want to start the package manager. But when I copy those files to a pen drive the above mentioned autorun feature doesn't work. In short I want my apt cache backup on a pen drive with the autorun feature.

I Just got a Removable Hard drive! Now I need to format it because I need it to hold more then 4 GB file sizes. What format should i used. I'll only need compatibility with Other LINUX computers. So should i use NTFS, BTRFS, or EXT4? How would i take ownership of the backup drivers file system and not ROOTS permissions

I have spent considerable time installing and getting my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) to where I want it. I am looking for something that would BackUp my entire hard drive to a CD/DVD (preferably bootable) --so-- if I crash -or- want to clone to another hard drive I would have the ability to a 'Restore' of the CD/DVD and simply be able to load the CD/DVD to an old / new hard drive and be back-in-business without a lot of hassle.

How to backup from an old mysql in a hard drive?I have this HD which used to have an Ubuntu 7.04... However, the system crashed and it is not possible to boot anymore.I have moved the HD to another computer and made a copy for every important file and folder... But I am facing trouble to backup mysql... To copy /etc/lib/mysql doesn't work because it is probably in an older version from the mysql I use on Ubuntu 10.10

I am a backup noob. My idea of backing something up is finding a big enough flash drive and copying the necessary files over.
So I really need to learn now. I'm wiping a Vista laptop for a friend to install Windows 7. But first, I want to do a whole-drive backup in case something goes wrong. It's a 100GB drive with 50GB of data.
Is it possible that I could do this via my home network or via a direct ethernet connection? I have a desktop with a 1TB drive I could back up to. Like I say, I'm a noob so I'm open to anything.
One more thing: I'd like this backup to be in a form that I can retrieve individual files from it if necessary. If everything goes right, I'll probably want to pull My Documents out of the backup and drop it into Windows 7.
Oh, and why am I asking on UbuntuForums instead of a Windows forum? Because I'm betting I'll end up booting a live CD on the laptop to do the backup. But I'm just guessing. At any rate, I'm sure I'll use Ubuntu tools, because that's what I know.

I just got a 1TB external usb hard drive to backup my comedy shows. On my smaller usb 'pen' drives, I set the file system to ext2 (occasional reads/writes) , but should I do the same for this bigger and more frequently acessed drive? (daily read/ocassional writes), should I go with EXT3 for the journaling?
Also, regarding security, I was thinking about making the drive writable only by root, so that when I mount the drive as a normal user, which will be for a few hours daily, if someone does get onto my system they couldnt write to the drive from my user account. That should just be a simple case of setting the device to 755 (and owner=root) should it not?

I've been working at this for the past 2 days now. My computer got some kind of virus or something that has caused it to loop at startup and continually reset. I run an XP OS on a Gateway. I desperately need to backup my files, because the person who had my backup absently deleted my stuff. I was able to boot up using an Ubuntu disc and I'm in it right now, I've found my files, I have an external hard drive. The problem:First, it wont let me paste into the hard drive. If I drag, it says "Error while copying to "/media/FreeAgent Drive". You do not have permissions to write to this folder." I've mounted the external drive, nothing changes.
I've gone in to properties, is says under permissions that the owner is root, folder access is "Access files" and at the bottom is says "You are not the owner, so you can't change these permissions." The drop downs where I need to change permissions is in gray, so I can;t change it.So next, I tried "gksu nautilus", went to the drive through there, and it let me use the drop down selection under permissions. I tried to change the folder access and I got this message: "The permissions could not be changed. Couldn't change the permissions of "FreeAgent Drive" because it is on a read-only disk." So I tried changing the file access to Read and Write. It didn't give an error, so I thought perhaps it finally worked. I hit apply, and tried to put my files in. Once again I got the message from before that said I didn't have permission. I tried to change the owner so it was no longer root and I got "The owner could not be changed. Couldn't change the owner of "FreeAgent Drive" because it is on a read-only disk."I'm getting so frustrated right now. These files are VERY important to me! The hard drive I have is a Seagate FreeAgent desk 500GB

I was busy making backups to my external hard drive just now, but Ubuntu crashed 10 mins into the backups. After rebooting the affected folders are now Read only, and I cannot add or remove anything. This is extremely annoying, I already threw away two USB flash disks because the same thing happened to me in the past. I don't want to throw away the external because it's far more expensive and packed with backups.
Symptoms: I can write or delete a file to the hard drive, in any folder, accept the folders that was being accessed when the computer crashed. I have tried to change permissions, but I get an error. I tried opening a terminal and sudo rm -r that folder, but I get a input/output error. I'm running Karmic. Backups were made by Back-in-time.

Recently, Ubuntu was doing a standard update. It got stuck in some kind of strange loop. So i put the boot disk in cleared the master drive and reinstalled ububtu 10.4. I have a backup 500gb drive that use to keep the contents of my important information for my fileserver. After the completed install and found the backup drive STILL named "FILESERVER" and still has my folders aka: our pictures, our music, and our video. I opened them up and they're all empty. Am I missing some informaton? I swear i didn't format the drive. I couldn't have since the folders are still there. Where are all my files at?

I have a headless ubuntu server (10.04 x64) in the attic that I use as mostly as a file server for media streaming and backing up other PCs on the home network. The box doesn't have a display, keyboard or mouse connected and is in a location where it's physically difficult to get at.
I'm mostly looking at a solution to protect the system if it were physically stolen(hopefully this is very unlikely) so that I could have a reasonable confidence that no one could boot a live CD and steal any private documents on there.
I don't feel like I need to encrypt the root file system (and I don't want to reinstall!) as most of the data on the system isn't sensitive (MP3s, video files etc).
I would like to protect the backups of the other systems as they have some personal documents etc on them,
I need to also balance this with convenience as I need the backups to continue to be automatic or they most likely won't get done at all.
Currently I have a samba share called "backup" that is password protected and points to /media/backup where a 2tb drive is mounted, this drive is used just for backups from the other systems so I would like to encrypt the whole drive.
I realise that I can't have the drive mount completely automatically as it will then be accessible to anyone who can boot the box. The compromise I would like would be that the drive is encrypted and then either:
1.) I log in via ssh and enter a command to mount the drive which prompts for a passphrase - drive stays mounted after I log out until manually unmounted or the system is rebooted
or
2.) On boot something runs automatically which then prompts me for the passphrase when I next connect via ssh - again the drive stays mounted after I log out until manually unmounted or the system is rebooted
I would prefer 2 as then I am less likely to forget to mount the drive after a reboot.
I have seen several tutorials using LUKS to encrypt the drive and manually mount but am wondering if it's possible to achieve 2. Also wondering if there are any implications for samba if the drive is not available straight away at boot, would I need to restart anything after mounting the encrypted drive for example?

I have set up a Ubuntu box that is a proxy server. Everything works great and I would like to somehow make a complete disc backup of everything on that hard drive, incase it fails. Took me quite a while how to figure out everything and get it working. The box has an 80gb drive, with Ubuntu 9.10 loaded, standard default setup. Could I just install a 2nd hard drive and somehow give it a command to mirror everything to the 2nd hard drive?

I made an attempt to backup my system (karmic koala) using this routine. cd / then sudo tar cvpzf backup.tgz --exclude=/proc --exclude=/lost+found --exclude=/backup.tgz --exclude=/mnt --exclude=/sys /
The process of backup went on for a very long time, which is probably normal. On returning to the computer in the morning, it was in suspend mode and would not power on via the usual method,tapping power button. So then I used the reset button, and after booting up a message appears on the top right that reports "Install problem! The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly. Please contact your computer administrator."
Is there something wrong with the statement that was used for backing up the system? Also when I attempt to login it does not work now either, it eventually returns to the login user selection. So is there a possibility the backup finished and then there may be a chance the system can be restored from the backup file? I have tried booting up with a live cd and could use some advice on how to navigate with terminal to root of the system and see if the backup file exist even, have been unable to get to the root folder(where the backup would be) with the GUI method via live cd.

I've been struggling with the problem of scanning an external drive that is used to store the backup from a Windows 7 machine. The Windows 7 machine was infected but the user continued to backup to the external drive. He has since formatted his machine and reinstalled Windows 7, but now he would like restore whatever he can from the backup on the external drive. I've been attempting to scan the external drive for viruses using ClamTK by connecting it to my laptop running Ubuntu 10.04, but it has not worked. There is supposed to be about 10 gigs of backed up data, but I haven't seen any. I don't know why it is not mounted.

so this is really the result of another problem. There seems to be an issue with CPU spiking to 99% forever (until reboot) if I run apt-get or synaptic or update manager while an external USB drive is plugged in. Note, other USB peripherals are no problem, just an external HD.
So my work around was to eject the drive when doing apt-get or other installation work, then reattaching it to remount. Now, on to the present problem. I'm using the basic backup script (the rotating one) found in the Ubuntu Server manual. It uses tar and gzip to store a compressed version of the desired directories on my external USB. (which sits in a fire proof safe - this is for a business)
However, it seems tar and gzip which run nightly 6 days a week via cron as root, don't ever want to die, and they don't release the drive. I have to reboot the system (I can't logoff) to release the drive, unplug it, the I can do update/install work.
Of course, if apt etc. would work fine without conflicts with the external device, I'd not care about the tar/gzip problem other than it generally isn't a proper way for them to function and it chews up some CPU cycles. (they run about 0.6 and 1.7 percent respectively) I also can't kill them via kill or killall. They seem undead.
