So now I've got my iMac G3 running nicely I was wondering how I go about running a burn in test so that I can see if I can improve the cooling in places by manipulating airflow, I have a thermal cam but I want the machine running maxed out in order to see where things can be improved.CPUBurn in the repos isn't coded for PPC, only x86 x86_64.
View 5 RepliesThis is my first thread so bear with me. I have an Apple ibook 3G with a 500mhz ppc processor and 384MB of Ram that used to run OSX 2.8 but I am trying to install linux on it. I want to install Ubuntu or Xubuntu on it because I have been a Ubuntu user for a couple of years and I love it. But when I tried to install them my screen does funky things. The screen only fills up part of the screen and then there is like a partial mirror image of the screen on bottom of that screen and i think its something to do with the graphics config because I installed Yellow Dog Linux on it and it worked for a while and then does the same thing so I know its not the screen its self. I hope to get a few pics of it soon. But I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem or knew how to fix it.

Long Version:
I have a spare computer here. It's rather powerful for my daily needs (Athlon X2 6000) and I want to set it as my HTPC/Server. Don't worry about HTPC, it got Digital Audio output and a Radeon HD3200 with HDMI out, outputs 1080p pretty well under Windows (I'll setup it for Ubuntu when I get everything straight). So, I thought "Well, I think it's going to be overkill to let such machine as a HTPC only. I'll use it as a server too!". So far so good, but I don't know anything about servers or such. I would like it, as a server, to compile huge programs and handle big compressions (I'm actually with a Celeron ULV 1.2GHz netbook for such tasks, takes ages). Also, it would be pretty nice if I could control the server with my netbook. Like, Start/Stop music/movies with my netbook, control the Boxee/XBMC (Media Players) with the netbook, and, if possible, control its mouse.
Btw, will Ubuntu 10.10 support Hardware Acceleration for ATI Radeon HD3200? Over Windows' DXVA it works OK.
I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 and I wanted to customise it a little (splash screen, login screen, window theme) - problem is, all of the tuts on the net have been written for 9.xx or lower and none of them seem to work with the version that I am running (I can't remember why right now because I looked this up a few days ago but there was a tab missing in 10.04 that was there in 9.xx and below). how to customise these things running Ubuntu 10.04?

Now I now about nothing about of Linux, though I have installed it a few times, but never really worked with it. I have been using MS products for 15 Plus years and have a pretty good understanding of how things work. I do not claim to be any expert. Some Idea of what I am inquiring: Now, how does the Linux Kernel handle the NT Kernel? Are processes/threads in cpu separated for each Kernel? How would interrupt requests be handled? How is Memory and Disk Management handled? Then obviously how would Device Management be handled as well?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWith my ubuntu iso in the dvd drive, I do not get any boot from options for it to be used as boot drive within the boot order from the boot control panel. On startup with the alt key pressed I only get the Mac drive but when I change the boot to the other option (network) and press the alt key on startup, I get the boot order screen with the Mac HD and also the Ubuntu iso but cannot get the Ubuntu to highlight and use, just the Mac remains highlighted. On the same screen I get a very small wrist watch to the left of the screen that the mouse can move up and down but not to the side.
I am using a windows usb keyboard and usb mouse, I have used all manner of keyboard combinations to get the Ubuntu disc to highlight but nothing seems to work. Within the drive section, the "My Mac" drive is locked and cannot partition it or change anything about it. Has anyone any ideas that I can try? I did not want to get a Mac keyboard and Mouse as yet seeing as I wish to change the operating system to ubuntu.
A few sectors on my Hard drive on my toshiba laptop are having issues, so i have to load Ubuntu (9.10 i believe) from a USB drive. Is is still possible to save things, download programs, drivers, and anything so i can still use most of ubuntu's features without everything resetting after a reboot?

The reason I ask is that after replacing my HD and reinstalling Maverick I've noticed the PC freezing up afew times. It seems that memory gets used up and then doesnt free up after the application is closed. The last couple of times this happened today I was doing
1. Copying a number of photos from my flash drive to the HD
2. Burnt a disk with Brasero.
After doing this it froze and I had to crash the system and reboot. I don't remeber this happening before.
Apart from this memory problem it's working OK I think. My system specs are below

I'm know very little about Linux but decided to set up a machine running Drupal CMS on a Debian machine and it won't go. The folks at Drupal have tried to help but it seems the Debian OS won't do it's PHP thing for Drupal.
That means i'll have to start at the START I guess.

I was having terribly slow internet speed with my wireless setup. I followed someone's advice and now my internet speed is flying. However, now I lose connection a lot - almost once every few minutes. Is there any reason for the changes listed below to make me lose connection so easily?

Changes that improved speed, but killed stability:
Radio Band frequency should be 20 MHZ,
standard channel change to 11

When I quit an editing sesion vim creates a backup file with the same name as that of the edited file but with a '~' appended. I would like the name for the backup file to be the following: same base name as that of the edited file and edited file extension replaced by 'bak'. Example:

I have four Red Hat 5 servers located in two different geographical sites. they are working active/active on each site.
Is there any software that I can use in order to have the four servers running Active/Active Active/Active in the same time, and if one site has been destroyed the other two servers in the other site handle the traffic?
Basically the traffic is a Web traffic.
I cannot install Mac OS X on my MacBook. When I boot from the DVD the only option I get is to install the OS from Time Machine. I cannot do a clean install from the DVD. Why is that? And how can I change it? How do I get the computer to install Mac OS X from the DVD, and not Time Machine?

Does this operate independently from the Online Update Applet(kupdateapplet)? The reason I ask is that the Applet doesn't always seem to work correctly. However, if the system will check for online updates automatically regardless of the Applet, perhaps this isn't an issue. If I can avoid messing with the Applet, that would be great.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to extract just a few files/folders from a Time Machine backup, but can't seem to find them. The drive is automatically mounted in Ubuntu, and am able to access after enabling view hidden files, the HFS+ Private Data Directory. But that is a jumbled array of thousands of numbered folders, with each taking a fair amount of time to open on this aging Dell running 10.10.
I've tried running the standard Places - Search for Documents, with 'Show hidden and backup files' enabled, but that won't pull up any of the search times I'm going for (and seemingly won't find anything at all on the drive). So, is there any way to decipher the directory tree so as to be able to access this data from Ubuntu? Or perhaps a file embedded somewhere in there that lists out the original structure, so that I can use it as an index to see what number correlates to what originally named folder?
I have been reading others experiences of similar Low-Display 800x600 minimal color issues on G4 and other PPC computers, Thought I had it close but still can't get it really gworking as it should, I believe it is all to do with the framebuffers (that don't exist and I don't know how to make these files and keep them on reboot. mine is a really old G3 with the Slot Load R128 Rage ATI graphics, 40 GB HDD, 256 MB RAM,740/750 processor.

Is it possible to run the software from my live CD or USB just as I would running Linux (thus, without the need for the software to be installed on a HD)? If so, where do I need to save the software file(s) when creating my live CD or USB?

Just wanted to share a script that I wrote to migrate data off of a Time Machine backup. As anyone who's tried this knows, it's not straightforward because most directories are pseudo-hardlinked according to some hare-brained scheme Apple came up with. (Hard-linked directories actually show up as zero-length regular files with bizarre link counts greater than 128. The link count corresponds to a directory called "dir_$N" (where $N is the link count) inside of a special directory at the root of the Time Machine volume called ".HFS+ Private Directory Data^M" (where the ^M is a literal carriage-return character).)
Here's the script (it's also attached, for convenience). It works pretty much the same as "rsync -av <SRC_DIR> <DST_DIR>" would, if the pseudo-hardlinks weren't in the way. In other words, it just recursively copies the first directory to the second. So the first argument (the source directory) is typically something like
/media/<TIME_MACHINE_VOLNAME>/Backups.backupdb/<HOSTNAME>/Latest/<VOLNAME>
if you want the entire latest backup. It can also be a relative path, if you've already changed to a directory inside the backup.

Anyone have success setting up either wireless or ethernet connectivity on a Macbook Pro 5,5 on the 10.10 Maverick install? Normally in the past with 10.04, etc... I just plug in my ethernet cable and update my wireless using "sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source", but I can't even get my ethernet to work. I tried to load it from the live CD once logged in but couldn't figure it out.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI started by running ubuntu 10.10 live CD and I did an install on my iMac. I went the route of just deleting all the data off of the iMac (I have a time capsule backup) and ran the install. Well when i booted the computer back up then Ubuntu did not come up as expected.After a few trial and errors I decided to just reinstall the Mac OS. I put the wrong disc in (it was an upgrade disk and not the disk that came with the iMac) so I wanted to eject it. That was a no go. Keep in mind i was using LOGITECH KEYBOARD and not the wireless keyboard that came with it. So when my computer boots up now all I get is the grey screen. After a while it tried to boot up Ubuntu. The screen has a flashing cursor, and then it disappears and the screen stays black.
I can get the computer to the point where if I hold the option key (alt on my logitech keyboard) then the option to boot to windows or the CD comes up. I can't boot to either.I've tried the command (windows key on the logitech keyboard) ctrl+o+f start up keys to try and get the command prompt up and that didn't work eitherI've tried a few other things and they didn't work. I'm not even sure my wireless keyboard works on bootup. I've tried to hold down the option key for the dual boot selection screen and it doesn't pop up, but it pops up when I use the logitech keyboard.Oh someone PLEASE help me. I have an Intel core iMac which was bough with the last year I believe. I would like to get the disc out or at least get Ubuntu up and I can eject the disk from the Ubuntu OS.
I currently have a full install of Ubuntu 10.4 64-Bit running under VMWare Fusion on my MacBookPro. I works fine but I am looking to streamline things a bit. All I actually need is to be able run commands from the command line.
