Ubuntu / Apple :: Extracting Specific File From Mac Time Machine Drive?

Mar 5, 2011

I am trying to extract just a few files/folders from a Time Machine backup, but can't seem to find them. The drive is automatically mounted in Ubuntu, and am able to access after enabling view hidden files, the HFS+ Private Data Directory. But that is a jumbled array of thousands of numbered folders, with each taking a fair amount of time to open on this aging Dell running 10.10.

I've tried running the standard Places - Search for Documents, with 'Show hidden and backup files' enabled, but that won't pull up any of the search times I'm going for (and seemingly won't find anything at all on the drive). So, is there any way to decipher the directory tree so as to be able to access this data from Ubuntu? Or perhaps a file embedded somewhere in there that lists out the original structure, so that I can use it as an index to see what number correlates to what originally named folder?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Script To Deal With Pseudo-hardlinked Directories In Time Machine Backups

Jun 16, 2010

Just wanted to share a script that I wrote to migrate data off of a Time Machine backup. As anyone who's tried this knows, it's not straightforward because most directories are pseudo-hardlinked according to some hare-brained scheme Apple came up with. (Hard-linked directories actually show up as zero-length regular files with bizarre link counts greater than 128. The link count corresponds to a directory called "dir_$N" (where $N is the link count) inside of a special directory at the root of the Time Machine volume called ".HFS+ Private Directory Data^M" (where the ^M is a literal carriage-return character).)

Here's the script (it's also attached, for convenience). It works pretty much the same as "rsync -av <SRC_DIR> <DST_DIR>" would, if the pseudo-hardlinks weren't in the way. In other words, it just recursively copies the first directory to the second. So the first argument (the source directory) is typically something like

/media/<TIME_MACHINE_VOLNAME>/Backups.backupdb/<HOSTNAME>/Latest/<VOLNAME>

if you want the entire latest backup. It can also be a relative path, if you've already changed to a directory inside the backup.

General :: Run A Program For A Specific Amount Of Time Starting At A Specific Time?

I want to record an internet radio station starting at 2:00am tomorrow morning. The specific program on the radio station lasts until 6:00am. The command I need to run to record the station is: Code:mplayer http://wjcu.jcu.edu:8001/listen.pls -ao pcm:file=indie_heat_of_the_night.wav -vc dummy -vo nullI'd use cron, but 1. I'm not sure how to and 2. it seems unnecessarily complicated for something that I only want to run once. If cron is the only/easiest solution, I guess I'll just have to resort to that, but I'd rather not.

Ubuntu :: Mount Time Machine Drive In 9.10?

I have a Time Machine back up of my old macbook that was stolen.

I have installed hfsplus and libhfsp0 via synaptic.

When I ran: 'cat /boot/config-2.6.31-20-generic | grep HFS' in the terminal...

I got:
CONFIG_NET_SCH_HFSC=m
CONFIG_HFS_FS=m
CONFIG_HFSPLUS_FS=m
CONFIG_SQUASHFS=m
# CONFIG_SQUASHFS_EMBEDDED is not set
CONFIG_SQUASHFS_FRAGMENT_CACHE_SIZE=3

I read in some other post that any line starting with '#' needed to end with '=m'

I'd just like to be able to mount my time machine drive.

Debian Multimedia :: How To Get VLC To Start At Specific Time In Media File

Mar 14, 2015

How do I get vlc to start at a specific time in a media file. I can do it easily in mplayer2, mpv but not vlc. Let's say the media file is named abc.avi (file format,container not important for this example.) Also the running time is around 2+ hrs. In mplayer2 and mpv I can simply do :-

Code: Select all$mpv abc.avi --start=00:59:00

And it will start running at that point in time.

In vlc, it also seems to have something at :-

Code: Select all[$] vlc --advanced --help
......
......

Playback control:
      --input-repeat <integer [-2147483648 .. 2147483647]>
                                 Input repetitions
      --start-time <float>       Start time

Now I don't understand what the <float> bit. I tried :-

Code: Select all$vlc abc.avi --start-time=00:59:00

But that didn't work. It's possible that it might be a bug, then again I might not have done it correctly.

I'm using 9.10 (Karmic).

Anyone know why the audio file is being truncated? Am I doing something wrong? Apart from being truncated the mp3 file plays perfectly. Here's what ffmpeg has to say about the video file:

Code:
Seems stream 1 codec frame rate differs from container frame rate: 59.83 (59834/1000) -> 29.92 (359/12)
Input #0, mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2, from 'Part1.mp4':

Stream #0.1(und): Video: h264, yuv420p, 1152x720, 29.92 tbr, 29.92 tbn, 59.83 tbc

And here's the command I'm using to extract and convert the audio:

Debian :: Mounting .iso Image Versus Extracting Data From .img File?

Feb 28, 2010

I use Lenny, and was trying to mount a .iso image, supposedly a cd imagem.

[code]....

This is what I get from dmesg | tail:

debian:/home/zac/cscd# dmesg | tail
[ 1811.505199] floppy0: disk absent or changed during operation
[ 1811.505207] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0

[code]....

I did a little research on the web and it seems that this file is not really a cd image, but simply data in a .img file. What do you think of that?

debian:/home/zac/cscd# file cscd3.iso
cscd3.iso: data

Some people recommend to extract the data via the dd command, but it didn't seem very safe for me to do that!

[URL]

is it possible to extract the data into a directory (instead of a device) using dd? This file is supposed to be a software. I wanted to run it on wine by keeping it mounted on a mount point in my file system. Does it make any sense to try to do this if the file simply isn't a cd image?

Ubuntu :: Launch Script At Startup After Specific Time?

Jun 13, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 in a computer with a 7200rpm HD, 8Gb Ram, and a Core i7, and the time it takes to load the desktop is insane. There are threads that mention the problem of gnome looking for nonexistent floppy drives and to solve the problem by disabling that in the BIOS (option I don't have). Anyway, besides that problem, by running at startup a gnome-terminal with the iotop command, I noticed that two processes have a huge i/o load on the system: google desktop and ubuntu one. I would like those programs to run as part of the startup process, but be launched after several seconds (to allow the rest of the programs to load). Is there any way I can achieve this? I think there should be a way modifying the commands under startup application, but I cannot find anything that works.
