Red Hat :: Geographical Redundancy - Software - In Order To Have The Four Servers Running Active
Mar 24, 2010
I have four Red Hat 5 servers located in two different geographical sites. they are working active/active on each site.
Is there any software that I can use in order to have the four servers running Active/Active Active/Active in the same time, and if one site has been destroyed the other two servers in the other site handle the traffic?
Basically the traffic is a Web traffic.

Can list options available for server redundancy? (i.e. fault tolerance methods so that if a server goes down another server can take over). Also is it possible to implement RAID1/disk mirroring across servers?

how to setup an Active/Active Load Balanced and High Available (If one of the nodes is down the system still runs) MySQL cluster. I have found quite a few howto's but I have some things unclear in my mind. I found a few solutions like this one: [URL] or this: [URK] Those are using two or four MySQL nodes, two Load Balancers to avoid a single point of failure but only one MySQL cluster management server. What happens if the MySQL cluster management fails?
I have also found a "MySQL Master-Master Circular Replication" technique but from what I read, with this option there is a chance that conflicts will arise if node A and node B both insert an auto-incrementing key on the same table.

I am looking for a solution where the data to be shared across multiple locations through login. In this regard, the following options are required.
1) The files/folders created can be viewed by the group and the owner has an option to edit and delete. However, if required the owner/admin can grant permission temporarily.
2) log of files/folders being accessed
3) The access of files/folders is based on username and password.
One thing striking me is FTP Server to enable the above solution. If so, i just want a step by step guide. Otherwise, let me know any other better options.

The notification area in the panel comes up each time I boot with Irl as the geographical location. If I click this it changes to GBr (which is correct). Is there any way of stopping the Irl display, or at least make GBr the default at boot time?

I'm used to use several workspaces (6) for completly different tasks. In the netbook edition, the merged launcher/taskbar shows always ALL programs running on all workspaces. I don't like it, because it becomes confusing to have too many symbols from every workspace, even when on the active one only a few applications run. So is there a way to hide application symbols for applications which don't run on the active workspace?

In OpenSuSE 11.2 YaST -> Online Update Configuration I can configure how often the system should check for updates (i.e. daily, weekly). Does this operate independently from the Online Update Applet(kupdateapplet)? The reason I ask is that the Applet doesn't always seem to work correctly. However, if the system will check for online updates automatically regardless of the Applet, perhaps this isn't an issue. If I can avoid messing with the Applet, that would be great.

So now I've got my iMac G3 running nicely I was wondering how I go about running a burn in test so that I can see if I can improve the cooling in places by manipulating airflow, I have a thermal cam but I want the machine running maxed out in order to see where things can be improved.CPUBurn in the repos isn't coded for PPC, only x86 x86_64.

I bought a brand new PC with 2 hard disk: a solid state 250gb and a 500gb sata drive. On the first one, I installed Ubuntu LTS 10.04.2.
My question is: how can I make the redundancy of the boot partition and / on the sata disk? I thought to clone the internal hard disk and then run a rsync before every shutdown. But the PC doesn't always boot from the ssd and change the boot sequence from the bios has no effect. I had also considered the idea of a raid 1 with mdadm, but it seems to worsen the performance.

Evening, had a switch outage today, what a PITA. ok, that's behind me, my next project is to have the least amount of single point of failures.
So the current scenario is the following; ISP -> linux firewall -> 3 network subnets.
1. load balanced network
2. public servers (ftp, etc.)
3. management network
I would like to change it to be more like; ISP -> switch, 2 patch cords to 2 seperate firewalls (right now using a basic linux box with iptables, works great), might go the endian or other route with failover. But, each server has a public IP and private 192.x ip, most server have 2 adapters 2 interfaces each, so I do have 4 ports already. I would like to send 1nic with public/private to switch1, the other to switch 2 but either keep them down, or better the same IP. So I guess, is this possible? I would say the word bonding, not sure if it can be used in this term. The webserver are running Ubuntu 9.10 64bit, DB's etc are mostly CentOS 5.4 box's.
We have all dell hardware, switches, etc. but I don't know in my years, can you have 2 seperate adapters share an IP for fault tollerance, or would I have to down/up each of the nic's in the event of a switch failure.

Something that has been in the pipleline at work for a while is user-based web directories. Main PDCs are running Windows Server 2003 using Active Directory, ideally what would happen is that users have a web share under [URL].. - the server behind this would be Linux (either Fedora or CentOS).
What kind of configuration would be needed for Apache to make this possible? The way I have planned so far is to have the Linux box auth against the AD domain (possibly joined), with Apache setup to share local public_html folders. Not sure how I can get rid of the tilde from the start of the username, but it should be pretty easy.

I have this strange problem which I am unable to web search on and not sure what to do next. My Linux knowledge is between basic to intermediate but I know how to troubleshoot general hardware problems.
My problem is that Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty 64-bit hangs while SFTP is active and dynamic IP changes. For example, I SFTP into my home server and transfer file then suddenly my ISP decides to renew my IP and give me a new IP while my SFTP client is still uploading files to my home server. This causes my SFTP client to stop working. Upon checking, my router is still running with a new IP lease from my ISP. My Linux box still powers on but typing anything from the keyboard does not make it "wake up" and put things on the monitor. Nothing seems to make it respond and the only way is to get about it is to power off and on. During that time, you cannot SSH into the server as there is no respond. SFTP into the server is not possible too because connection fails.
The server has all new hardware, latest BIOS, etc. Memtest86 shows no errors after running for more then 5 hours. I am unable to find anything out of the norm in /var/log/kern.log or in dmesg. All hardware seems to be working.
When I think about it, I tend to think OpenSSH (probably that is the default package in Jaunty) is causing this system hang whenever there is an interrupted connection from the outside world. However, I fail to agree with this is because I am sure the daemon and Linux can tolerate this situation without resorting to system hang. FYI, I have installed vsftp as well but this should not be a problem.

I am the IT Manager at a research facility. We have a fairly unique network configuration in order to support all of the different projects we have going on. We have Red Hat, Ubuntu, Windows XP/Vista/7, Windows Servers 2003, Ubuntu servers, Red Hat servers, and even a few Netgear ReadyNAS and Buffalo Terastations. Over the last few years, I have been migrating all of my users and accounts to a single ACL list, which I chose to be a Windows AD 2003 server. 95% of my users work on Windows platforms and just use ssh tunnels to develop on our linux boxes.
However, i ran in to a problem with our Linux boxes not being able to symbolic link on my Windows 2003 file shares. Of course, this is a problem with Windows not supporting symbolic links. I know 2008 does support this feature, but given the economy and the budget restraints, we cannot afford to purchase the updates we would need, so now I am moving all of my shares to a Ubuntu 10.04 server using Samba. I have joined the server to my AD domain successfully, i can login using my AD credentials, and even assign ownership and group permissions using AD users/groups.
Here is my question.
I would like to keep the AD permission schemes intact. I have several shares that contain folders that have individual permission settings. For example, I have a /shared directory that contains about 50 different folders. Some of these folders I allow my users to write data to, some just read, and others I deny access to complete groups and just allow key groups to access (for example, personnel data should only be accessed by the Administrative staff).
Is there a way to make this work?
I can assign uid and gid manually per folder in Samba, but i would like to have the possibility to add multiple users and groups with permissions to folders, which I do not believe can be done with the standard chown commands. Currently, I can see the folder permissions from my Windows box, but when I try to edit the permission settings, it defaults back to full access. So my AD permissions are not being saved.

(This was posted at the end of another thread, where it probably didn't belong, so reposting here)I have Active Directory set up on one machine (and I can't really adjust the settings very much) and Ubuntu Server 10.04, which I would like to use as a client.I followed the directions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LD...Authentication, but when I get to
Code:
getent passwd
I don't see anything from the LDAP, and ssh'ing into the box from an LDAP/AD username certainly doesn't work.
In addition, I've attempted to use Webmin's LDAP Configuration module to configure it. I can connect to the server and can browse it with the LDAP browser with my settings, but the Webmin package doesn't recognize the users (which are organized in one of four Organizational Units (OUs) within the OU that I have as my Search Base) as users,

I have a little nice Ubuntu server with 6x 1TB drives assebmbled into a RAID5 array. Recently SATA cable of one of the drives failed. So I ordered a new cable and ran the server in degraded mode for a few days. Like this:
Code:
/dev/md0:
Version : 00.90
Creation Time : Sat Sep 19 10:39:11 2009
Raid Level : raid5
Array Size : 4883812480 (4657.57 GiB 5001.02 GB)
code....
I'd like the 6th drive to be active, not spare, like before. Should I just wait for rebuild to be finished (it can easily take over 1 day)? Or should I add it somehow differently to be active immediately?
I'm not sure, but I think as I simulated failures unplugging one of the disk, after plugging it in again, the "failed" drive was active again and rebuilding was started as well of course. But it was 2 years ago, so...
The array works just fine for now - I can access files, etc. But I suspect, that in this state if another cable or drive fails, it won't survive anymore. Even after rebuilding is finished, but the 6th drive stays is still marked as "spare". Right?

We have a small group of linux servers, currently with local logins. I want to eliminate the local logins and authenticate against the corporate AD. I've been looking at PAM - but winbind requires each machine to be added to the AD. This becomes a pain if we create new virtual or physical servers. Is it possible to have one server authenticate directly with AD, and the other servers authenticate against this server, which defers to the one server that is registered in AD?

We are running IPmonitor to monitor the disk usage on our Linux servers. It does not seem to coincide with what is reported when running df -h. For example on a Red Hat 5.3 server - our IPmonitor shows that 85% is used on the /usr partition, however when I do a df -h on the server it shows that 91% is used. Why there would be a discrepancy? IPmonitor uses SNMP.

Could it possible to configure all the Ip (same)address on both Linux1 and Linux2 and Linux1 have eth status UP while Linux2 have eth:y status down. I am trying it but on Linux2 machine I cant able to create multiple Ip interfaces with down status.

I currently have 9 physical servers that I wanted to condense to 1 physical server with 7 VMs using Xen. The only issue that I have with doing this is that if the server happens to fail due to hardware problems, I am going to have a major issue. I wanted to set up a two node cluster so in the event of something happening to one of the servers, it will automatic failover to the next.
With so many ways to cluster servers, does anyone have any suggestions on the way to perform my needed task. The OS for Xen will be Red Hat and the VMs will have many versions of linux. Some of the VMs will have mysql, apache, dns, and postfix running.

I'm installing a server to act as a firewall between a local network and internet. I've installed Firestarter becaused it worked straitgh away (it seems that FS is configuring the routing as well). I've tried to remove it, and then I lost the access from LAN to Internet. (I don't know why -perhaps the routing is disabled then- , so I prefer to keep it).
The problem is that Webmin Bandwidth Monitor (bandwidthd) is not logging anything when FS is active. Does someone has an idea on how I could make it work? I've tried cacti and some other stuff, but it is far too complicated for me.

This is the scenario: Active Directory Server = 192.168.0.1 Squid/Dansguardian Proxy Server w/NTLM Auth = 192.168.0.10 The Linux box has been integrated with AD and works fine. Users can authenticate automatically when login the AD or when they access the web through Basic authentication. That part is just fine.
But, when I add a new user, or change a users' primary group, I have to change the 'filtergroups' file in Dansguardian. I tried to make auto this process using the USERMAP and USERMAP2 scripts in [URL].. at the "Extras and Add Ons" section, but both scripts doesn't run properly in Ubuntu if they are not changed. I tried, following the instructions, but got a lot of syntax errors. So, I wrote a very simple script using 'net rpc' to retrieve all users according to the AD Security and Domain Groups. I created an output folder in dansguardian to dump the rpc outputs into files. And read the files to apply filtering groups.
[Code]...

But what i want to know is that possible to join a domain without time synchronisation?
