Ubuntu / Apple :: Install OS X After Kubuntu 10.04 Dual Boot

Jun 23, 2010

Having successfully installed kubuntu 10.04 on my Powermac G5 I was wondering if I can install os x and dual boot, there are plenty of tutorials around but all of them involve installing kubuntu on a system with os x already installed. If there is any danger of damaging Kubuntu then I will leave it as I really don't want to go through the hell of getting it working properly again! Also I have plenty of hard drives kicking about - would it be safer/easier to install os x on it's own hard drive? And if so how would things work with yaboot?

General :: Trying To Install Kubuntu Dual Boot

Apr 11, 2010

I want to dual boot kubuntu. I am a linux noob so have basically no experience with linux except what i have done of the live cd. My problem is that when I get to the part of the installer relating to partitions. It wont allow me to select the free space I have shrunk off my windows/data partition. it calls the space unusable and will not allow me to proceed when it is selected. Shouldn't the installer turn the free space into a partition for kubuntu to install to? The installer also show a bar wich marks off the partitions and how much each one takes up it does recongnize that there is free space because it tells me that I have 25 gb free.

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Kubuntu To Dual Boot?

Apr 8, 2010

I am trying to dual boot Kubuntu with an existing Windows 7 already installed. I downloaded the Kubuntu iso and burned it to a DVD. I changed the boot order in BIOS to accept the optical drive first. Kubuntu installer starts, I can select a language and can choose to install. However, the problem happens right after I select install. The screen goes dark and the blinking white tab disappears, nothing happens, and I can do nothing to trigger any response. Now, I have tried the alternative text-based installer and that works. I mean that it installs, but when I try to boot Kubuntu after the installation nothing happens and the same or very similar thing happens that occurred back with the non-text installer.

I don't know what to do or how to diagnose the problem. I thought it might be the boot loader or maybe the graphics card, but I'm not sure. I'm very new to anything Linux and I'm not the most computer savvy person.

I'm using a Gateway NV79 laptop
spec:
Intel Core i3 330M
500GB HDD
4GB RAM
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD with 128MB

Ubuntu :: Kubuntu / Windows 7 Dual Boot Setup?

Feb 18, 2010

I just bought a Dell 537s machine and configured it for dual boot of Windows 7 and Kubuntu 9.10. On my old dual boot machine I had the Windows System and the Linux System on different disk partitions. That way I could write fstab in such a way as to make the Windows System read-only as seen from Linux, so Linux couldn't mess up any Windows System files (and since Windows can't read ext3, Windows couldn't mess up the Linux System).

But the new machine came with Windows 7 installed and gobbling up 3 primary partitions. Kubuntu installed itself in such a way that Linux can read/write to the Windows System. This makes me nervous that Kubuntu might be able to mess up Windows 7.

Is there any way to make specific Windows 7 directories/files unwriteable as seen from Linux without altering their behavior in Windows 7?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot XP And Kubuntu 10.10 GRUB?

Nov 20, 2010

My system has 2 hard drives, a 400gb master and a 250gb slave. sda (my main 400gb Windows drive) has XP on it. The slave (sdb) has 3 partitions:

sdb1 is for my downloads (NTFS ~180gb)
sdb2 has Kubuntu 8.10 installed (ext3, 60gb)
and sdb3 is the swap (3gb).

I want to do a destructive upgrade to Kubuntu 10.10 - I have the CD already and burnt. I know I have to select the partitions manually due to the complicated setup, I know I need to format the sdb2 partition to ext4, mount point /, and the swap can stay the same. On which hard drive should I install the bootloader? I can't remember where it is installed now, all I know is I had a lot of problems with the install.

Ubuntu Installation :: Safe To Dual Boot Kubuntu With Windows 7?

Jan 19, 2010

I really hate to ask this. I have been searching for almost 2 days for a comforting answer but still not satisfied. I have a new Dell Studio 1555 64 bit system with Windows 7. I really like running dual boot systems and this is my first W7 machine. Is it vaguely safe to attempt to install Kubuntu 9.10 on this system? It still smells new and I'd hate to wreck it this soon, LOL. The vast amount of info on this forum along with the sheer number of posts makes it difficult to sift through sometimes.

Ubuntu :: Installed Dual Boot Fedora And Lost Kubuntu

Sep 19, 2009

I had Kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.0 interface and i decided to try out fedora to see if i liked it and wanted to eventually switch. i've done so many dual boot systems with Kubuntu and not had any problems that i decided not to back up my system this time before running the installation. after running the installation and shrinking my hard drive (200 gb) by 80 gigs, i rebooted to find that Kubuntu was no longer bootable. the first time i booted into fedora, disk utility popped up with a message that said "1 or more hard drives is failing". i ran the test that it recommended and found no problems. then i ran the longer test and still found no problems. i've rebooted a few times and have not been able to see Kubuntu in the boot loader options. if you need any more information i will be happy to provide it. my question, obviously, is how can i retrieve my Kubuntu partition. it is still there but is not bootable.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Cannot Dual Boot In Mac System

Jul 6, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu on my PCs and laptops for quite a while. Recently, I've been allocated a Mac for use in my lab. It is a PowerPC G5 running on Mac OS X 10.4.11. I've installed Ubuntu on one of the two hard disks available, the other one being the disk which Mac is installed in. There was no problems with the installation, but I cannot get Ubuntu to boot. Basically, when I restart the system, it boots into Mac straight away.

There is no boot loader or GRUB. I've tried holding down the options key when the system starts, but for some unknown reasons, the monitor cannot find a signal, so I cannot see what is going on. The monitor can only pick up a signal after Mac starts to boot (or, when I was installing Ubuntu, after the virtual Ubuntu has loaded). Am I suppose to expect GRUB or some other boot loader?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Can't Dual Boot Maverick?

Jan 26, 2011

I have one machine in my house which doesn't run Linux, and that is a new iMac (a few months old). It has 4GB DDR3 Ram, an intel core i3 chip @ 3.06GHz, and a ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics card.I want to dual boot Ubuntu (I have a disk with Maverick on it).But I have read the wiki and I dont really understand alot of it. Right at the beginning, it says:"This information will not work for iMac (11,1) users and recent versions of Ubuntu (e.g., Maverick). The presence of the bios-grub partition that the Ubuntu installer creates by default (e.g., sda3) causes a conflict that prevents syncing the GPT and MBR partition tables."Does this mean that I can't dual boot Maverick? What does it mean by 'iMac(11,1)'?

Ubuntu / Apple :: No Dual Boot - Cannot Get To A Log In Screen

Apr 29, 2011

I have a Macbook Pro, with ubuntu as the ONLY OS, there is no dual boot. I bought the mac long ago and recently got fed up with OS X, so i removed it for unbutu. i've been having random troubles with it but have for the most part been able to figure it out by reading forums however, my computer will not boot now.

From power off:
Push power button
Screen becomes grey for about twenty seconds
screen becomes black
sometimes flashes the underscore in the top right corner once
screen goes black
no change thereafter

I was playing Warcraft 3 (running on WINE) when I left it, the CD is still in the disk drive. I cannot eject it, I can not get to a log in screen, I can't do anything. Nothing I have attempted has affect the computer what so ever, except the power button as far as I can tell.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Undo Partitioning / Dual Boot?

Jan 31, 2010

I'm running OS X 10.5.8 and Ubuntu 9.04 on a Macbook 4,1, and I want to remove the Ubuntu partition so I can free up hard drive space. However, the linux swap partition is located in between the OS X and Ubuntu partitions, and GParted won't let me remove it when I boot from an Ubuntu Live disk, and OS X Disk Utility can't affect it either. I followed the dual booting instructions here, and I pretty much just want to undo all of it and get back to an OS X only machine.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Dual Boot Setup Broken By Update?

Jul 5, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx 64bit on my mac pro in a dual boot setup with os x. When installing I had some trouble figuring out the partitions, especially because the thing happened with the extra partition from nowhere. I deleted the small partition created by the installer, synced the GPT and MBR, installed GRUB on /dev/sda4 and all was fine.

After my first software update my system is now broken, after rEFIt it got stuck on a black screen. I started up from the livecd, chrooted into my system, reinstalled GRUB on /dev/sda4, installed it on /dev/sda too, but that did not really help. I now get to the GRUB rescue shell, but I'm pretty clueless what to do. Also it does not seem a widespread problem, since I didn;t find many reports of dual-boot macintels breaking with this update. What can I do to restore my linux system ?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Macbook 7.1 - Single Versus Dual Boot?

Mar 10, 2011

I have a Macbook 7.1 (the white one)
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB DDR3 memory
250GB hard drive

I'd like to install Ubuntu on it because I really love the way Ubuntu is developing and becoming much more user friendly. My use will mainly be for browsing, working with wordprocessors and maybe downloading series from torrents. My question is, should I dual boot or single boot? My personal preference is to single-boot, I just like the idea of having one OS running on the machine. What are the cons of doing that? Also, If I want to dual boot just to keep the firmware updates. How much space should I designate for Ubuntu and how much for Mac OS?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Does Kubuntu 11.04 Have Efi Support On Its Grub

Jul 28, 2011

I currently have kubuntu 11.04 on my laptop harddrive that is in an external enclosure. it is on the outside of the machine and connect to the computer via USB.It works fine on my windows machine and I love the fact I could also plug it into my kubuntu machine at home and use it as a regular harddrive too. Although my new job basically wants me to use a mac. Apparently you need something called an efi support on my grub so here are the questions:

Does kubuntu 11.04 have efi support on its grub i.e. can I plug my hard drive with my kubuntu on via USB to a mac and boot from there? If not how could I get one? Also does getting efi support make any difference when I plug it into my kubuntu machine at home? So can I back up my data as I used to?(by simply plugging it in)Could I still plug it into my windows machine as before and work if I get efi support?

p.s. If you have trouble with heavy laptops give external harddrives a go its like carrying an ultra light linux machine (with all your data in it)!

When I go to display settings it won't let me change to a higher resolution (1024x768 is what the iBook natively runs at).

Ubuntu / Apple :: Cannot Boot From Cd For Install?

Jan 29, 2010

I am trying to put ubuntu an old imac with osx that a former customer gave me. I am not extremely well versed in Apple products but have been doing research intoy current problem. I have tried just putting in the ubuntu shipit disc I have, along with downloading and burning 9.10 text based and have not been able to get it to install. I have tried holding 'c' when rebooting, holding 'option' while rebooting it only gives me the choice of booting from osx), and holding 'control, option, apple, delete' as well to no avail. I then tried downloading Virtualbox and mounting the dmg and found out that my imac is not letting me mount any dmg's at all. Any guidance? Can I take out the harddrive and hook it as a slave to my pc and somehow install ubuntu that way and put it back in the imac? All I want is for the imac to be useful again as I was trying to make it into a stand alone dvd player.
