Ubuntu / Apple :: Grub2+EFI On A Mac Book Pro?

Feb 14, 2010

Anybody recently succeded in installing GRUB2 on Mac OSX partitions? I have to compile in un Fedora/Ubuntu/Gentoo. It work, but once back in OS X, I get this error:

./grub-mkimage -d . -o grub.efi part_gpt hfsplus fat ext2 etx3 ext4 normal sh chain boot configfile linux -bash: ./grub-mkimage: cannot execute binary file

I tried to build it in Ubuntu 8.04, gentoo and Fedora Rawhide, all fail with the same error. Look like the binary compatiility between OSX and Linux is broken in Leopard. I would love to have a faster boot, it take half a minute to get to grub, using Grub2 with EFI would take 3 seconds. As I don't need bios emulation, Fedora would also run faster. Anybody have a compiled and working Grub2? Is there a better way to use Grub2 with EFI? A working one if possible

OSX: 10.5.8
Linux: Ubuntu 9.10
Mac: MacBook Pro Santa Rosa (3 years old with a Core 2 Duo 2.2ghz)
GCC: 4.2, 4.3, 4.4

Ubuntu / Apple :: Enable Slower Processor Speed On Ti-Book?

Jan 20, 2010

I'm using 9.10 on an 867mhz ti-book.Ubuntu is quicker than OSX and everything I care about works. However, the G4 processor can't auto-cycle up and down as later G4's could. It can operate at a reduced speed, though. Doing so greatly reduces the heat output and fan noise.Anyone know how to enable the slower processor speed in 9.10?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Replace Refit With Grub2?

Feb 15, 2010

I'm not the world's biggest fan of rEFIt to be perfectly honest. It doesn't allow me to customize the menu, set a default, etc. I'd rather boot exclusively using grub-efi. Not just that, I'd prefer to be able to do so without needing an hfs+ volume to bless it onto. edit: I can now see that Elv117 has asked this recently. I shall leave this post here in the hopes that someone knowledgable runs across it and not the one further down the page. Also, I'll probably try working through the tutorial to see if I can manage it. I need to evaluate if I really need OS X at all on my MacBook. I think it would be neat to have GPT/Grub2/MacOSX/Ubuntu/Win7 working properly, the way a "modern" computer ought to. Reverting to MBR is just throwing in the towel.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Macbook With Bad Cd Drive - Grub2 Hangin?

Jun 14, 2010

I have a macbook pro 4,1 which does not have a functioning cd drive. I'm trying to install ubuntu by loop-booting an iso from the hard drive (or a usb drive, or using the netbook kernel, or the files from a live usb, or anything really) It will not boot off of usb drives. I've read that this is an issue with the firmware of these machines and there's not much I can do about it. rEFIt sees the usb drive, but the macbook complains there is no OS when it attempts to boot from it.

I've installed grub2 locally by dropping a home-built grub.efi (And modules and whatnot) in /efi/grub. This lets me pick grub from the refit menu, and grub will correctly load up a grub.cfg, and I can get into a grub shell and browse around, pick kernels etc. The problem comes when I try to boot anything. I've tried the netboot kernel and initrd, I've tried loop booting an ISO, I've tried copying a live usb to disk and booting that kernel, but no dice. any way I go about it, I can select the kernel and initrd, and that appears to work fine. Grub gives me some correct-looking info messages about the kernel and initrd that I just loaded, but then when I try to actually boot (i.e. with the boot command), nothing happens, I just get a cursor that sits there and does nothing.

I've tried with everything (the iso, the kernel and initrd) on the first partition, on other partitions, with different filesystems (both hfs+ and fat32) all to no avail, and all with the same symptoms, grub just sits there after the kernel and initrd are loaded and does nothing. I'm wondering if there's some kernel arguments I need to make things happen on the macbook or some other magic like that. This is a pretty non-ordinary boot setup so it's not terribly easy to find info about it.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Boot Modified SnowLeopard Install With Grub2?

I modified SnowLeopard to install on mbr disk format. How can I chainload to the bootloader on the OS X partition using GRUB2. The autodetected entry MAC OS X put in by ubiquity on installing ubuntu doesn't work. In grub legacy I just added an entry with root() and chainload and it worked. How can I achieve this with grub2?The computer is an Intel Mac. I am unable to install Windows 7 on a GUID disk (without using bootcamp).

Fedora :: Dual Booting - Grub2 To See F15 Or Be Installed Using Grub2?

Jul 11, 2011

I installed Fedora 15, which was my first real departure from Debian based Linux OSs. I absolutely love the new Gnome 3, and was able to configure F15 to work as I wanted it to. On rebooting I realized that there was no boot loader screen, that F15 just booted and didn't give me a choice as to which OS I wanted to use. Eventually I was able to configure grub to let me see the boot loader and added my old boot loader as a choice. This worked well, maybe not a perfect solution, but it worked. This weekend I installed LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) to another HDD. LMDE uses grub2 and after the install F15 was not recognized.

Two questions: Is there a way for grub2 to see F15? or Can F15 be installed using grub2? I really don't mind re-installing from scratch.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Auto-load Apple Wireless Keyboard?

Apr 22, 2010

This morning I bought an Apple wireless keyboard and I got it connected through Blueman. It works like a charm, but I have on problem;

When I log out I can log back in by typing in my password. However, when I restart the computer it seems that bluetooth is not loaded yet and I cannot enter my password. So I have to log in using my wired keyboard, and then disconnect & re-connect to my wireless keyboard using blueman before I am able to use the wireless keyboard.

Is there any way that I can already auto-load bluetooth and connect to my keyboard before I log in?

Fedora :: Load Grub2 From Grub4dos / Load Directly Grub2 Core Without Passing By Bootstriping Code?

Jan 24, 2011

I want to load grub2 from grub4dos.I want to load directly the grub2 core. I know how to load first 512 bytes from some patition by chainloader and load grub2, but what I need is to load directly grub2 core without passing by bootstriping code (first 512 bytes). So, my first boot manager is grub4dos, then I can load grub2 and later I load Ubuntu. But I think I have to edit --set-root
What I dont know is how.

In hdd 0,7 (sda8) I have Ubuntu 10.10 and /boot/grub/core.img is in sda8 (hd0.7)

I tried this way:

Code:
title grub2
find --set-root /boot/grub/core.img
kernel /boot/grub/core.img

For the most part that went well... however I did find an unfortunate quirk. When I Right-Click any of the items in the Unity Launcher panel, and they bring up the submenu (for example I did the modification to add Pics, Docs etc to my Home Folder in the Launcher) I then cannot do a screenshot using my "PrtSc" key on my netbook. This only happens when the submenus are visible. Unfortunate because I wanted to get a screen shot of the submenus.

Ubuntu :: Viewing LDAP Address Book?

Jun 29, 2010

Is it possible to view all of the entries in an LDAP Address book at one time (ie in the address book pane) of an email client? I've tried in both Thunderbird and Outlook 2003, and I get the same behavior - the mail client can auto-complete entries, but it can't seem to list the whole address book at once.

Is there a certain structure of the LDAP tree that will grant this support? Can it be done at all? It seems to me an 'address book' that can't be browsed as a whole isn't very effective...

I should add that I'm the one who set up the LDAP server - I'm just testing various capabilities of LDAP.

Ubuntu :: How To Import Address Book Into OpenOffice

No such option appears in the Linux version. In fact I seem to be missing a stack of drivers such as SDBC/ODBC etc. Mine is a stock Ubuntu 10.04 install. I added the Openoffice database element but other than that it's all standard.

I'm struggling to believe there isn't a relatively simple way to import an e-mail client address book and print some sticky labels in Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Transferring Outlook Address Book

Dec 25, 2010

I suffered a permanent crash of WinXP. It won't boot and there's an incomprehensible error message.Anyway, I was able to recover almost all my data and move it over to Ubuntu 10.4 on the same computer. What I could not recover was my Outlook Address Book. I know it is funky to transfer it from one Windows email client to another, but transferring it across OS's seemed almost impossible, especially since I don't have Outlook's Export feature available. Even Google and other webmails needed to have those Outlook address files converted before they could use them.

What would be the plan of least resistance here for a Total Noob? Can I, should I, and how do I transfer the address book to a different computer with Outlook for export before transferring it back on the Linux side?

Ubuntu :: 1.5TB NTFS WD Book Now Shows Up As 2TB Unallocated?

Jan 17, 2011

So, I have a 1.5 TB WD My Book that has been working fine since I got it. It has a 250GB WFBS partition and the remaining is NTFS. Worked in Windows, Ubuntu and Mac OS X as well as on my Wii.Now, none of my systems recognize it. Tried on two computers under Ubuntu and Windows. Tried on a third with Mac OS X. On one of the first two, tried Mac OS X via VirtualBox. My Wii will not recognize the WBFS either. Gparted will not recognize it (whether from a Live CD or full install). Disk Utility in the Mac sees it, but as a 2TB unallocated drive. The same for Disk Management in Windows 7. I need some of the stuff on there, plus I want my 1.5TB back forall other purposes. That was Ubuntu 10.10, OS X 10.6.6, Windows 7 and Wii 4.3U. [edit]So, marked as "Solved" but that is not exactly true. Ultimately, the drive was found to be a bust and I have Western Digital sending me a new one
