Ubuntu / Apple :: Enable Slower Processor Speed On Ti-Book?
Jan 20, 2010
I'm using 9.10 on an 867mhz ti-book.Ubuntu is quicker than OSX and everything I care about works. However, the G4 processor can't auto-cycle up and down as later G4's could. It can operate at a reduced speed, though. Doing so greatly reduces the heat output and fan noise.Anyone know how to enable the slower processor speed in 9.10?

Since I use my computer for some intense processor calculations, without any fancy graphical needs, I decided to apply a mild OC on the BIOS settings, to speed thing a bit up.I own an AMD Phenom II 1055T (2.8GHz) cpu. I changed the base freq from 200 to 203, and changed the multipliers of the standard and boost freqs to x15 and x16.5, so now the BIOS reads 3045 MHz and 3349 MHz for both speeds.

The dvd rom drive is quite noisy if used at full speed, but it can be reduced at the cost of speed, which, depending on what you're doing, does not make much difference (like listening to music or watching a movie). Adittionaly, it may (that's just a reasonable guess) extend its lifetime. It can be manually reduced with the following command:
eject -x N /dev/cdrom (which won't actually eject it) Where N is the number of the speed you want. I've read that 4 is OK for music and 12 is OK for movies. (Reference: Setting CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drive speed to reduce noise ) Everything is fine, but is it possible to have lower speed set by default on fstab or something, or the fastest speed is always the default?

I don't really understand the CPU technology where there are different CPU speeds. I feel it is hard to compare them nowadays. For example, I have been using my laptop with Pentium (R) 2Ghz. Now, I am thinking about buying a new laptop with Intel I5 1.33GHz (Tablet/laptop). Is my new laptop going to be slower than my current one?

i installed ubuntu on my ppc g4 the other day and have noticed it has been WAY slower than osx 10.4.11.i am aslo having trouble playing flash videos, i have searched the problem and it has told me there is no adobe for ppc's using ubuntu... i installed gnash and swfdec in an attempt to get something, but its not working.
i would like to know if there is any solution to the video problem and any reason you can think of that my computer would be so slow. i only use my computer for music, videos and the odd game so if nothing can be fixed ill have to go back to osx.. *sigh* maybe give linux another try when i buy a better computer

Anybody recently succeded in installing GRUB2 on Mac OSX partitions? I have to compile in un Fedora/Ubuntu/Gentoo. It work, but once back in OS X, I get this error:
./grub-mkimage -d . -o grub.efi part_gpt hfsplus fat ext2 etx3 ext4 normal sh chain boot configfile linux -bash: ./grub-mkimage: cannot execute binary file
I tried to build it in Ubuntu 8.04, gentoo and Fedora Rawhide, all fail with the same error. Look like the binary compatiility between OSX and Linux is broken in Leopard. I would love to have a faster boot, it take half a minute to get to grub, using Grub2 with EFI would take 3 seconds. As I don't need bios emulation, Fedora would also run faster. Anybody have a compiled and working Grub2? Is there a better way to use Grub2 with EFI? A working one if possible
OSX: 10.5.8
Linux: Ubuntu 9.10
Mac: MacBook Pro Santa Rosa (3 years old with a Core 2 Duo 2.2ghz)

I can't figure out why but my processor is running at 100% on all four cores, and the fan is running at max speed. All I did was double click an a.out file created by g++, and it is running at full speed now.

OpenSuse 11.2
LXDE (Latest version)
It used to have a lightening speed. But now every application is taking few seconds to start, even on Konsole, the commands take some seconds to get typed ! (I literally have to wait for cursor to move and commands to get typed on Konsole). Folders are taking some seconds to get opened !
I rebooted the computer but that proved to be useless.
Here the ps output:
Code:
anisha@linux-uitj:~> pstree -Apuh `id -anisha`
id: invalid option -- 'i'
Try `id --help' for more information.

I have Fedora 13 installed on my laptop. For some reason it always seems to run at 1GHz even though the maximum is 1.67GHz (even under 100% load).
The output of cpufreq-info code...
I tried changing the limits by setting cpufreq-set -r -g userspace -c 0 -d 1000MHz -u 1670MHz but the output it still identical (in particular "frequency should be within 1000 MHz and 1000 MHz").
Any ideas how to change the limits?

Im experiencing a strange problem with 10.04. When it first boots up its reasonably quick (as snappy as Gnome ever has been) but after its been running for a day or two it gets ununsably slow and has to be rebooted.
I dont see how it can be anything to do with my hardware as it runs OK when first started. Ive monitored RAM usage and it doesnt seem to differ much. There's always the same amount unused.

I've got a final revision of the G4 Mac mini, the 1.5GHz model, dual booting 10.04 LTS and OS X. One of the issues I've had is that the internal speaker doesn't work under Linux, or so it's been reported on various post and sites. It turns out it's a simple matter of flipping some ALSA control options. With an ALSA mixer you must enable both the Speaker and the Headphone to get audio to play over the internal speaker. It will still play over the external headphones/speakers if they are still plugged in. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the ALSA, OSS, PCM or snd_powermac drivers or just something setup wonky in the configs. I've used both GNOME ALSA Mixer GUI and the alsamixer command line tool to do this. The alsamixer tool will mostly work in an X-term, as the F-keys don't pass though. It is fully functional on a console login. I also noticed that audio plays back per-user. When I switch from X to a console he sound is cut off, and when I get logged in as the same user the audio comes right back in.

I recently installed Deluge 1.2.0 from the following PPA:[URL]I using this on two different Linux computers. One is running Linux Mint 8 and the other is running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. The first time on either computer when I enable WebUI in the Deluge GUI it works fine. However if I ever disable it in plugins section I am subsequently unable to re-enable it (doesn't appear in the side panel again). Rebooting or reinstalling Deluge seems to have no effect. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Ubuntu 64bit. The sound system works and plays noises correctly when I test the speakers in sound preferances. The internet BBCi player(Radio) plays sound correctly. Banshee & Rhythmbox try to play music files at double, or more, speed with no sound output. Spotify Linux version also tries to playback at double speed with no sound output. Media Player attempts to play music files at high speed. Media player plays the Video and audio tracks at high speed. VLC Will play the video at normal speed but with no audio.

This morning I bought an Apple wireless keyboard and I got it connected through Blueman. It works like a charm, but I have on problem;
When I log out I can log back in by typing in my password. However, when I restart the computer it seems that bluetooth is not loaded yet and I cannot enter my password. So I have to log in using my wired keyboard, and then disconnect & re-connect to my wireless keyboard using blueman before I am able to use the wireless keyboard.
Is there any way that I can already auto-load bluetooth and connect to my keyboard before I log in?

Is there a way to speed it up?

I've just installed Slackware 13.1 in two different laptops for first time. I have some strange internet browsing behaviour in one of the laptops. I've installed 2 internet browsers(firefox, opera) using the directions from Slackbuilds.org and there is also konqueror pre-installed. Moreover I installed Wicd network manager.
I can browse some pages e.g. ..... with firefox very slowly but NEVER facebook. I can browse almost any page, even facebook, with OPERA but very very slowly. The same goes with konqueror... Wicd shows that i am always connected with my WPA wireless network

I am comparing distros of Linux on a computer with VERY low specs. I have a CLI only version of Ubuntu 9.10 running A-OK, but when I run lwm or just X the video flickers (which I believe is due not to the video card/driver but to the resources used). I have tried this with two video cards with the same result.
When I run puppy it flies with no setup.
I know that Puppy is designed for older systems (2.4 Kernel and all that), but is there any other reason why Ubuntu would be slow in comparison.
I am using the nv driver with a Riva TNT PCI Video card.

But, since the reinstall the boot has gone from blindingly fast to average.
what would of caused this? It's a shame, the boot cycle was one of the outstanding highlights of Ubuntu,

I've installed Ubuntu Maverick on a testing machine, a Samsung N510 (Atom N280/2 GB RAM), and I've been quite surprised that I haven't been able, due to slowness, to reproduce MPEG2/DIVX videos (using VLC).When I subsequently installed Windows XP, the videos were playing fluidly. Now, I also noticed, although this may potentially be biased, that the overall responsiveness of the system is a bit slower than when I use Windows XP (drawing speed of objects).I remember having the same feeling I switched (years ago) entirely from Windows to Ubuntu.
Why is video decoding so much slower on Ubuntu?Providing that the second point (desktop system speed) is not biased, is gnome inherently slower than Windows XP's GUI? Why, if so?

Why is Ubuntu slower and more unstable than Fedora on my laptop? I thought, as it is a more popular distro, it wouldn't be. I've only used it on my laptop for a couple of days and I already had at least 3 default software crashes. On Fedora, I had about one crash per two weeks. Ubuntu is also slightly slower. Opening the Social broadcast messages window took so long to open, that meanwhile, I totally forgot that I opened it.

I have EastLink cable Internet and I have the fastest residential service money can buy, I get speed test results of 30mbps down and 2mbps up, that being said, my Internet was lightning fast on windows and Mac but when I installed Ubuntu, which is my favourite OS, my Internet is very slow and laggy. Sometimes it could take several minutes for a web page to load and some torrents download at 1-2 MBps and some download at under 100kb/sec, some web pages load instantly, some take longer.
I've searched other forums I found was turning off IPv6, I am not really sure what that is but I followed the steps provided and shut it off but did not notice much of a difference. I am basically a beginner when it comes to Linux, I use the OS for my day to day school and entertainment. I listen to music, watch movies, do school work and such since I am a university student. I really love Ubuntu and don't want to be forced to go back to Win blows, I really don't like windows at all so I would really like to solve this issue and stick with this operating system.
