View 9 RepliesI recently used BootCamp on my MacBook (2.1) to partition my hdd and install Ubuntu (karmic), and I am having trouble with the wireless connection. On the mac partition it works fine, but on Ubuntu there are no wireless networks shown in the network-dialog. Previously I had only a Linux-partition on the same machine, and this was not a problem. Also the trackpad does not work at all. Does anyone know what to do about the network connection? Also I should mention that I first installed the AMD64-version of Ubuntu, which worked fine even though my macbook uses intel. Im tempted to just go back to the amd-version, any views on that?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I first had partitioned, and formatted appropriately, I installed the newest version of Ubuntu available (Time of posting 10.4), on the partition made with bootcamp, rebooted into Linux with rEFIt Now once I booted into 10.4 I got to the desktop, it started asking me about restricted hardware drivers, so I went into System > Administration > Hardware Drivers, It then searched for the drivers, it found the STA driver, and the B43 driver, I am unable to allow both. So I went on to try ndiswrapper, I downloaded it off another pc, compiled and installed on the iMac. then I got the driver off the Leopard install disk, put that on my flash drive, extracted the files from the installer, put that on the flash drive, then I went back over to the machine in question, copied the file to the desktop, I used the cd command to navigate to the folder, then ran ndiswrapper -i bmcwl6.inf, I made sure that the inf and sys files were in there, so I didn't know what was going on exactly.
So then I went into the software sources, and enabled the cd as a software source, then went into Synaptic, and installed the drivers, it said the install was successful, however when I go back to enable it, will still refuse to activate, I have looked all around for solutions, I have even checked out other threads on this matter. The funny thing seems to be, is that everyone, or almost everyone who has this card on their computer, are upgrading to 10.04, when it worked on a previous version.
I was curious if anyone has dual booted Ubuntu on this model iMac, (Mid 2011 with 4gb ram, 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 processor, the current model in the apple store).
When I dual booted on my MacBook I came across a plethora of problems, such as the sound not working properly or the wireless card not being supported.
Does anyone know if these same problems exist for the iMac or is everything business as usual?
This morning I bought an Apple wireless keyboard and I got it connected through Blueman. It works like a charm, but I have on problem;
When I log out I can log back in by typing in my password. However, when I restart the computer it seems that bluetooth is not loaded yet and I cannot enter my password. So I have to log in using my wired keyboard, and then disconnect & re-connect to my wireless keyboard using blueman before I am able to use the wireless keyboard.
Is there any way that I can already auto-load bluetooth and connect to my keyboard before I log in?
I'm trying to use an Apple wireless keyboard with Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) but the fn key is not working at all. If I start up xev and hit the fn key it generates no event. What do I need to do for it to work. It seems as if it should work when viewing pages like

which GNU/linux system will work on this? I like ubuntu but I will be happy with anything which works because I have not managed to get a working system myself. My computer is: Mac Pro 1,1 early 2006.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI can't get the iSight working on 11.04. I've extracted the driver and put it in /lib/firmware, shutdown and restarted as per instructions. I even tried downloading the latest version (1.6) of isight-firmware-tools from source but that didn't make a difference.
lsusb still says:
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 05ac:8300 Apple, Inc. Built-in iSight (no firmware loaded)
and ls -l /lib/firmware/isight.fw says:

I can't see any relevant messages in dmesg.

So I have been testing out the Ubuntu Live CD 10.04 on my PowerBook G4 and most everything seems to be working fine (with the exception of wireless and the dim/brighten buttons.) When connected to the internet via ethernet cable, I was able to download the broadcom hardware (I guess needed to make wireless work??) This is pictured below. However, even after the hardware thing was activated, when I unplugged the ethernet cord and clicked on the icon for wireless internet under wireless, it says, "Device not ready." Can you get wireless to work with the live cd?

It says I have no proprietary drivers.Do I need to connect to the internet before I can download these? It seems circular? Is there a driver that I can download and install the old-fashioned way?I have a macbook pro 4.1, the early 2008 Penryn model.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having a bit of trouble setting up a wireless connection. I'm really trying to set it up for Lucid Lynx on another partition, but right now I'm on OS X running Jaunty Jackalope in Sun's VirtualBox. Neither auto-recognize the network I'm trying to connect too (don't know if Ubuntu has that feature), but OS X has a good connection. I'm trying to set up Jaunty first since I at least have some internet connection, but I'm not planning on using it that much.
So far, what I have put into the Network setup application is the network's name (SSID, right?), that it's WPA, and the network password. Though now I've checked back on the password field, the 8 digit password (eight circles) has been replaced with a bunch of circles, so I don't know what's up with that.
What's empty is the BSSID field, the MAC address, and for all intents and purposes, the password field since it's not the same as what I put in there. I assume OS X has a copy of this information somewhere since it's already connected? I've tried quite a few attempts to get either Ubuntu system to connect, and my google-fu is not helping.
I have recently helped a friend of mine install ubuntu on their macbook which they have had since 2007 and we have run into a problem connecting to her wireless network. The WPA2 password that she uses is "invalid" while logged in under her ubuntu partition. We are able to connect to unprotected wifi networks without a problem and her home network can be accessed via OSX and my linux install on an acer aspire one (I'm running Peppermint OS at the moment). This has been a problem since day one of her ubuntu installation.

When I try either one I just get the lock screen where I have to enter my password to return to my session, but the computer never suspends or hibernates.
I've installed nvidia dkms support.
On the mbp 5,3 running 10.04, I'm trying to get the screen dimming keys working. Using the tutorial [URL] I followed the instructions for the nvidia-bl-dkms package. Initially upon configuration, the dimming keys work wonderfully, but after a restart, they don't work at all.

Although I had 11.04 running smoothly on my Macbook 4,1 (OS X 10.5) since it came out, I never bothered to actually test the iSight camera. So I fired up Cheese, but it claimed that it could not detect any webcam installed. gstreamer-properties does not list iSight either.I followed this article step by step: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ma...am/AppleiSight. After installing the firmware I pulled from my OS X partition, neither Cheese nor gstreamer picked up on my camera. As a matter of fact, I investigated further and realized that /dev/video0 does not even exist. The firmware seems to be recognized by the kernel, according to dmesg:Quote:
usbcore: registered new interface driver isight_firmwareI repeated the procedure in the article again after purging the firmware-tools package, but no dice. I resorted to booting back into OS X to use my webcam, but as you can imagine this is not very convenient heh.Does anyone have any advice as to where to go from here?EDIT: I ended up uninstalling the firmwire, since it caused my Macbook to become unresponsive (purple screen of death?) every time after coming out of sleep. I haven't found a solution for that either. For now I guess I'll keep my OS X on a partition to use iSight until something comes up to resolve this issue.
My wireless was working perfectly until I accidentally let the battery run flat with the machine prevented from hibernating. Upon recovery, there was no wireless available. Checking the Hardware Drivers, I can see the Broadcomm driver as "Activated but not currently in use". Following the copious advice elsewhere I have disabled the driver, rebooted the machine, enabled it again - many times. Still the same message. What is stopping me from activating it? Bit of a noob so........
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been using the information provided here: [URL] to fix some issues after installation of Karmic 64-bit on a MBP 5,5. The solutions for wireless and sound work, but not together - one seems to break the other. Here is what I did:
1. Followed directions for fixing wireless here: [URL] (AirPort) This works fine.
2. Followed directions for fixing sound, which seems to update the kernel, here: [URL] Sound This also works, but then wireless does not work.
If I boot into the older kernel version, I have wireless again, but no sound. If I boot into the newer kernel and try to use the wireless solution above its says I already have that package installed - yet no go with wireless.
After successfully installing Ubuntu Karmic on a friend's MacBook 3,1 I tried to get the wireless working. On the Live CD, the Broadcom STA driver worked fine, but now that I've finished installing, I'm having problems. The driver is installed, but Hardware Drivers says it isn't enabled. I try to activate it, put in my password, and the "Enabling Driver" dialog pops up for a split second, disappears, and the driver doesn't get activated. I've tried Google to no real avail.

If I boot Ubuntu from the live disc, the Broadcom installs and activates flawlessly. I installed Ubuntu (Lucid) to my hard drive and it seems to be reading the CD but then gets and error saying it couldn't find the driver. I only have wireless available to me so ethernet is not an option. Is there another way to download the needed the packages in OS X and then install them in Ubuntu?
View 5 Replies View RelatedBasically I'm triple booting Mac SL, Ubuntu 10.10, and Windows 7. Theres reasons for it. So I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 latest release everything works except the Wireless Internet! Wired works. View 2 Replies View RelatedAluminum Unibody macbook, the only aluminum macbook to date. It has a Broadcom chip in it and I installed the STA drivers. The first day it seemed to work fine. Then I noticed pages stopped loading. The max throughput I get is like 30KiB/s once in a while. Sometimes I see consistent speeds of 600B/S...this really sucks. Is there a fix or anything?
I was going to make the switch slowly to 10.10 full-time, but the wireless issue is bothering me. The keyboard brightness keys don't work natively, but there's a fix I saw but didn't have time to implement earlier. I like ubuntu but I don't like my wireless not working!
I just installed Ubuntu on my Macbook Pro today, and I'm trying to install the drivers.
I ran the command "sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name" and I got "Macbook 6,2"
On [url] it only lists up to Macbook 6,1 so I just went with that.
I'm trying to install the "Brodcom STA wireless driver" However, when I authenticate it and begin the installation, it says: "Sorry, the installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jokey.log"
I'm having a weird problem. I have a Apple Bluetooth keyboard, which used to work perfectly under Ubuntu. However, I decided to reinstall last week, and to my surprise the keyboard stopped working altogether. Also the gnome Bluetooth applet is crashing all the time. The weird thing is that I can use the keyboard to login, but after that it stops working altogether.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10, it's up to date. Currently using a 2.6.37 kernel which I compiled myself, but the problem also appears when I run the 2.6.35 ubuntu kernel. There are some bug reports on the internet on crashing gnome applets, but as far as I can tell nobody has the weird keyboard problem.
I posted here URL... about the wireless card in my Ibook, I,m still looking for help on getting it running correctly.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just had to have my MacBook Pro 5,5 replaced, and they replaced it with the brand new 8,1. This is nice, except for the fact that I have now learned that I can't get the video or wireless drivers for this computer. I do not have any access to ethernet, and USB internet does not seem to work. Right now I have Ubuntu 10.04 32bit installed. The installation went fine, but I can't get any drivers. Is there any fix for this? Here are the specs for this laptop:

Perhaps there's another distro I can use, or maybe another release that works somewhat?
