Ubuntu / Apple :: Setting Up A Wireless Connection?

Jun 11, 2010

I'm having a bit of trouble setting up a wireless connection. I'm really trying to set it up for Lucid Lynx on another partition, but right now I'm on OS X running Jaunty Jackalope in Sun's VirtualBox. Neither auto-recognize the network I'm trying to connect too (don't know if Ubuntu has that feature), but OS X has a good connection. I'm trying to set up Jaunty first since I at least have some internet connection, but I'm not planning on using it that much.

So far, what I have put into the Network setup application is the network's name (SSID, right?), that it's WPA, and the network password. Though now I've checked back on the password field, the 8 digit password (eight circles) has been replaced with a bunch of circles, so I don't know what's up with that.

What's empty is the BSSID field, the MAC address, and for all intents and purposes, the password field since it's not the same as what I put in there. I assume OS X has a copy of this information somewhere since it's already connected? I've tried quite a few attempts to get either Ubuntu system to connect, and my google-fu is not helping.

Ubuntu :: Setting Up Wireless Connection?

May 15, 2010

I am having some trouble setting up my wireless connection. I have a desktop version of ubuntu, and am trying to connect wirelessly to my modem, but it dosent even seem to be recognizing my wireless usb card. How do I get it to do that? Also, when I go to set up new wireless connection, it asks me for my ssid, mac address, mode, bssid, MTC, Wep index, authentication, ipv4 setting, and ipv6 settings. What the heck am I supposed to put in for those things?

Fedora Networking :: Setting Up F10 For Wireless Connection (Ralink RT2870)?

Apr 20, 2009

I have recently installed Fedora 10 onto my PC, dual booting with XP, and I am fairly new to linux. I have been trying to connect to my wireless network, but cannot even get Fedora to recognise my wireless adapter (Belkin N1 +MIMO). I have tried to follow a few tutorials that go through either the ndiswrapper method or by using native drivers. Because I don't have an internet connection on Fedora, I have to boot into XP to download the files for either ndiswrapper or the native drivers, rather than installing using the terminal.I downloaded the ndiswrapper RPM, and it failed because of an 'unexpected error', and when using the tarball, it could not find the makefile. The native drivers did not install because of unresolved dependencies.

General :: Setting Up The Alternative Ad-hoc Connection In Case Primary Wireless Fails?

Jul 2, 2011

I have a device that is only accessible using wireless. By default it starts an ad-hoc wireless I can connect to. The problem is there is no internet access on the ad-hoc. So I'm connecting it to my router using the commands (its a gnu/linux):

iwconfig ath0 mode managed essid "ESSID"
ifconfig ath0 192.168.1.25 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
route add default gw 192.168.1.1

I want to add it to start up script but I don't want to get locked out of the device forever if something happens to the router (its really old). Is there any way to check if the connection failed and create an ad-hoc instead if it failed?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Auto-load Apple Wireless Keyboard?

Apr 22, 2010

This morning I bought an Apple wireless keyboard and I got it connected through Blueman. It works like a charm, but I have on problem;

When I log out I can log back in by typing in my password. However, when I restart the computer it seems that bluetooth is not loaded yet and I cannot enter my password. So I have to log in using my wired keyboard, and then disconnect & re-connect to my wireless keyboard using blueman before I am able to use the wireless keyboard.

Is there any way that I can already auto-load bluetooth and connect to my keyboard before I log in?

Ubuntu Networking :: Setting Up Bluetooth Connection Between Two Computers Throws Connection Refused (111)

Apr 3, 2011

I'm trying to create a PAN (Personal Area Network) using a laptop (Siragon ML-1040) and my desktop computer, but I get the Connection Refused (111) error.

Blueman doesn't detect any network service between the two computers unless I start PAND on one of them and then it detects the NAP service. That, only after I enable the NAP/Workgroup services on the Services submenu in Blueman. However, it doesn't work neither with the NM plugins or without them (dhclient and that other one I can't remember the name of).

Any clues over here? I'm using pand 4.91 and blueman.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless - Lost It - 'wmaster0 No Wireless Extensions', But Then Refers To Wlan0 As The Wireless Connection

Mar 28, 2010

A friend who switched ISP's gave me his old Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. I went through the installation procedure and had a wireless connection up and running - smiley face. I had security set up for WPA, and decided to upgrade it to WPA2. Another smiley face. When I went to connect (had already done so successfully), I noticed it referred to my wireless as Linksys - I was expecting to see the SSID. So I started playing around in Network Manager and now I have things all effed up.

Don't know exactly what I did, but now I have no wireless. So I ran a few commands (lshw -C network, iwconfig, ifconfig, and iwlist scan), and looking at the results I see what appear to be inconsistencies in the output. I've posted them below, and make the following observations:

1. Under the lshw it refers to my wireless connection logical name as wmaster0, and has the correct MAC address, etc.

2. Under the iwconfig it says, 'wmaster0 no wireless extensions', but then refers to wlan0 as the wireless connection (although it does not seem to be running).

3. Under ifconfig I see both a wlan0 and a wlan0:avahi. The wlan0 has no IP, the wlan0:avahi does, but it is incorrect.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Internet Connection For Updates And To Customise System?

Apr 4, 2010

I recently installed ubuntu studio 9.10 amd64 on my MBP 5,3 I need an internet connection for updates and to customise my system etc I tried to connect with a wired connection but for some reason I could not configure the ethernet interface. I tried to install the broadcom bcmwl-kernel-source driver by downloading it on another computer and then using a usb stick to transfer it. I had to go through installing several dependencies including dkms and linux-headers-generic. When I finally succeeded the driver showed up in Hardware privers as proprietry but was inactive. Whenever I try to active it I hit 'Activat' I authenticate and the nothing happens. It remains inactive. The wired connection is not readily available to me so it would be great if it was possible to solve this either via a usb or cd.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Mounting Time Capsule Drives - Connection Refused

Jan 4, 2010

I've been looking for a way to mount my time capsule drives under Ubuntu, and found some guides, but none of them work for me. Apparently what you need to do is:

sudo mount.cifs //10.0.1.1/timecapsulename/dirname /media/timecapsule/ -o pass=pa55w0rd

My time capsule's ip is 192.168.1.10, it's name is "Time Capsule", the drive I'm trying to mount is called Movie HD

If I input the following command:

sudo mount.cifs //192.168.1.10/Time Capsule/Movie HD /media/timecapsule/ -o pass=mypassword

I get a connection refused error.I tried a couple different variations such as "/"Time Capsule"/Movie HD",etc, every combination, but I get a connection refused error (111) every time.(I have two drives on my time capsule, the internal, Movie HD, and an external usb one, Media HD, I want to actually mount them both)On my time capsule I did set it guest access to read only... Also, when I go to my places> network I do see the time capsule in the list, but I get an error message that it can't access the shares when I try to open it.

So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.

Networking :: Setting Up DSL Connection For Distro

Apr 4, 2010

I'm unsure about what's wrong in my software setup for my wired DSL connection with my desktop tower-- I can't go to any website nor use apt-get even though Knemo and the panel icon say I'm connected to the Internet. My distro in one computer is sidux (version Mopoc)-- this is the distro that can't connect to the net; in my other computer my distro is MEPIS 8.5 which always connects to the net with the same wired DSL modem, a working wired Motorola DSL modem from my ISP, AT&T-Yahoo. When I want my MEPIS computer to be online I just change the ethernet wire plugged into the modem. [Both desktop towers stand together on a table.]

My ISP (AT&T-Yahoo) won't help me because they only help Windows users. [I only have and use Linux--> MEPIS and sidux.]With sidux, I have ceni to configure the network card which ceni says is a tg3 Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5702X gigabit. With ceni, I pick DHCP but don't know, for the class box, if I should pick "allow-hotplug (removable devices)", or "auto (built-in devices), or "manual". I also don't know what goes in "DNS search" box and what goes in the "DNS Nameservers" box. [With sidux, I also have pppoe-config but I think I'm supposed to use ceni because AT&T at least told me that the pppoe has already been setup inside the Motorola modem.] At www.dnsserverlist.org, I'm told that for my IP, the top DNS servers are 129.250.48.146 and 156.154.70.22. Are these the two strings that go in the "DNS Nameservers" box of ceni? I know these numbers change and I believe they translate the name of a website into the string of numbers for that website. Yes?

I have to ask all this here because there's really no good, detailed help for ceni in the sidux manual. [I had an older version of sidux successfully connected to this AT&T-supplied Motorola DSL modem in the near past, but then I got this newer version of sidux.] Also, man ceni really has no useful info.
