Server :: USB Boot Failure ?

Jan 13, 2011

Ive been at this for two days now, and cant make any progress.

First, the details:
Target OS:
Fedora 14, i386
Target Machine:
IBM (e)server, xSeries 306
OS: Fedora v.4
Boot Order:
1. CD...
2. Removable Media
3. SATA...
USB Drive:
adata 8GB
Process:

I used the prescribed live usb creator for windows to fill the usb drive with Fedora 14 i386. Ive attempted to boot from the USB at least 4 times, once from each USB port on the box. No luck. There isnt an option in the BIOS to select the specific boot device. I bring that up because my desktop does have that option, and using the BIOS BOOT MENU, I was able to boot from the USB and bring up the Fedora 14 Installation Menu, no problem.

So, it works on the pc thats on my desk (eMachine w/XP), but the IBM doesnt even recognize it.

General :: Dell PE1750 Server Not Boot Up After A Power Failure - FS Check With E2fsck

Apr 19, 2010

I have a dell PE1750 server which would not boot up after a power failure. I am thrown to a shell for maintenance after showing an error in file system check. The server was running - Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 3 (Taroon). Please let me know if I can try to recover from this error by booting from the 1st CD of a higher version of linux like RHEL5. I ask this because I do not have the old media with which the system was setup. Can the use of latest OS CD cause any problem?

Ubuntu :: Laptop Boot Failure - Invalid Enviroment Block - Unable To Load Default Boot Entries

Mar 3, 2010

Have been running ubuntu for sometime now and love its functionality...However since a recent update have the following issues..When I power on the laptop I get the toshiba logo followed by grub loading with the message ' invalid enviroment block" "unable to load default boot entries". When I then try to run the laptop off a LiveCd, the ubuntu splash screen appears with the loading process bar (horizontal line) displayed..however it then appears to display a black screen with no further activity..Now all of this is via an external monitor as my laptop screen shows no activity right from the very start with just a blank screen....so am really stuck here wondering if its a harware/software issue or a combination of both...

Server :: Ubuntu 10.04 Server With Raid6 And Possibility Of Motherboard Failure?

Oct 6, 2010

I have set up a server box running Ubuntu 10.04 Server 64-bit with Squeezeboxserver, ftp, apache and all the things that I need.I am running it on a Asus P5Q pro with 9 harddrives attached.I have set up 6 1tb disks that run a raid6 array but I am wondering what would happen if the motherboard would fail me.Is it possible to just replace the motherboard with a newer one and would then the raid6 array still be intact?

I used to run a raid10 with the 6 disks on a Windows 7 machine with a software raid card but the card broke and I replaced it with a new one but the array could would not work so I had to forget all my data and this is what brought me to using a Ubuntu server as OS and running the raid array on the motherboard sata instead. Also, is it possible to make an exact copy of the boot drive/partition and easily replace that is the boot hard drive would go faulty? I have heard about the dd command and I feel it would be nice to know that I'm not totally screwed if the boot drive fails.

OpenSUSE Install :: XEN Boot Failure On 11.1?

Dec 19, 2009

Resently I installed OpenSUSE 11.1 including XEN as I planned to use virtual machines. XEN item appeared in GRUB boot menu along with other items (OpenSUSE, windows...).I was instructed to boot XEN in order to use virtual machines.During boot, XEN was examining my disks and partitions, and when it reached CD and DVD drives, seemingly it went into infinite loop between the two drives. Finaly the screen went dark, and I have to make hard reboot. How can I work around this problem?

Ubuntu :: Failure To Boot Windows?

Jan 14, 2010

I've had problems getting Windows to boot ever since I reinstalled it and then reinstalled the grub boot loader. Normally one would think that I would get a Error * message or something along that line but it starts with a quick flash of some text that says "Starting.." and other stuff I can't read before it disappears. Then it goes to my computers built in diagnostic tool, which obviously won't help since it isn't a real hardware problem either.I ran fdisk and here are some odd things that came up.Quote:

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 5222.There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,and could in certain setups cause problems with:1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

Ubuntu :: Recover From A Boot Failure?

Feb 14, 2011

Had Ubuntu 10.10 running fine on a Dell box, shut down as normal earlier in the week but now won't boot from GRUB (ends up with Busybox screen and initramfs(?) prompt). PC is a dual boot system which still boots OK into the XP partition on the same hard disk. I've tried all the other Unbuntu boot options in the GRUB menu (older kernels and the 'recovery' / non-recovery options) but all produce the same failure to boot into Ubuntu. I've searched the forums and tried various things but nothing has worked so far.

I tried the fix of booting from an Ubuntu 10.10 live CD, creating a mount point and mounting the relevant linux partition before using #apt-get update and #apt-get upgrade options to repair the installation. This seemed like a logical simple solution BUT the partition will not mount!! Further investigation using the Disk Utility app in the Ubuntu drop down menu indicated an error message along the lines of 'cannot mount Daemon inhibited' which I can't seem to find much information about fixing.

Using Gparted it looks like all the partitions originally set up on the disk are still there.

I put a lot of time into getting the system set up (scanners, printers, webcams and software) and would be really annoyed to have to do it all again if at all possible ...

Fedora :: Failure On Boot - Error Warning

Jun 26, 2010

I had occasion to add a few lines to rc.sysinit. Turns out the lines syntax was wrong. Instead of the booting ignoring those lines and proceeding on, then giving me an error warning or perhaps dumping into the interactive mode it just hung up! After several tries at moving on I discovered ESC dropped me into some sort of unannounced shell I got the installation disk out and with the repair system option using VI I got the lines deleted and all went back to normal. Now my suggestion is that if something does not make sense in terms of syntax while booting then cover it by doing the above and ignoring it with a warning later.

Fedora Installation :: FC 13 Boot After Update Failure?

Aug 10, 2010

I was having problems performing an update yesterday that failed on dovecot dependancies and after a few tries I removed dovecote (it wasn't being used) from the installation and tried again. Everything seemed to be going OK then the update (about 160MB) hung and the screen went black a few times and I think then shutdown automatically. The PC then fails to reboot and displayes the message "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)" I have tried to get the PC to boot with the super grub disc but without success (probably my in experience) I have also tried a suggestion from one of the forums to start the PC with a live CD and typed su -c 'grub-install /dev/sda at the terminal again without sucess. I have looked at the files with the live CD there are grub, menu and kernel files there (some are in lost + found, b ut don't know wheer these should be so have not changed anything.

Is there an easy way for the in-experienced to repair the boot process ?

The PC is a pentium 4 running Fedora 13
There is a 200MB boot partition formated as Ext3
and a 19GB partition formated as a LVM with Ext4
There is a CD drive but no DVD

Everything has worked OK for the past year through two online upgrades.

Ubuntu :: Boot Failure - Error No Such Device

Jul 27, 2010

I installed from a live disc months ago. It worked fine for a while, don't remember what caused the change.

Now when I boot, I get this message:

Quote:

I have several hdds in this desktop box, one other has a OS on it, has the Hardy version. But i disconnected that (it all used to work with both drives connected and I was able to use that boot menu to change from one OS to the other). I can boot by getting to "boot menu" by pushing the "esc" key when the bios starts (just after the beep). It gives the option to start from, with a list of possible devices to choose from. I don't know where this menu is from, bios or other. I select hard drive, then select the correct hard drive and it starts right up. That is nonsense though. I really no longer need version 8.04 but keep it as a backup in case my preferred OS/hdd fails.

I get a (initramfs) prompt and have no idea what to do with it.

I tried to update the initramfs with the liveCD but it says I can't write since I have only "read-only" access. But if I do "sudo nautilus" I have full access to the disk.

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Failure On Upgrade To 11.04

May 25, 2011

I'm having a few problems getting my system to boot after upgrading to 11.04.This problem actually first arose when I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 a couple of weeks ago, however I found I was able to boot by loading a selecting a previous kernel version (2.6.31.22 was the latest version I could successful boot from) and as I was a bit busy with exams at the time I decided to leave it be temporarily as I at least had a functioning system.I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 and then finally to 11.04 today. The original problem persisted on the upgrade to 10.10 however I was at that point still able to boot using the older kernel version. On the restart after the upgrade to 11.04 however, the system now freezes when trying to boot from 2.6.31.22 or previous versions (the splash screen shows and then the system gets stuck on a blank screen with just a cursor visible, but remains responsive to mouse (cursor moves) and keyboard (goes into restart process on Ctrl-Alt-Del)).

I'm at a bit of a loss of what to do and would be massively grateful if anyone had any advice of where to start for a solution. I can access the system using a LiveCD - the output of the boot info script is attached.

Ubuntu :: Boot Failure After Installing 11.04 Updates

Sep 1, 2011

I have a dual boot system (Compaq Presario CQ61) with Windows 7 and Ubuntu installed. A while back I updated my Ubuntu system to the 11.04. All went smoothly. Then recently, when the system prompted me, I installed some updates. Since then when I try to boot into Ubuntu I end up at a CLI with (initramfs) as the prompt.I can still successfully boot off of the Windows 7 partition. After reading a lot of articles describing similar problems, and failing to find a fix, I reinstalled 11.04.The system came up without any problems. BUT then, as usual, the system prompted me to install updates. Once I was done installing them and rebooted the computer I was back at the (initramfs) prompt.

Fedora :: 13 Kernel 2.6.34.7-63 X86_64 Causes Boot Failure?

Dec 7, 2010

I have just updated my kernel and immediately struck trouble. The kernel update is marked as security update.
When booting I get a multiple warnings " deprecated config file /etc/modprobe...", then "no root device found" followed by "boot has failed, sleeping forever"!Clearly something is amiss with this update, so figured the best thing might be to remove it and wait on a fix, but attempting to remove the kernel via the package manager would cause a whole lot of other packages to be removed as well.Instead, I edited grub.conf, commenting out all the kernel-2.6.34.7-63 lines, so that the default is now the previous kernel (2.6.34.7-61).
