Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Failure After Upgrade To 10.10?

Nov 22, 2010

I was happily running 10.04--- really worked fantastically! Then, I updated all, and upgraded to 10.10 using the upgrade manager in Ubuntu Desktop. Now, when I choose Ubuntu from the boot page, the computer shuts down--- no errors, it just reboots and I get right back to the boot page. I cannot boot into Ubuntu at all, and I am now stuck with Windows 7 once again.

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Failure On Upgrade To 11.04

May 25, 2011

I'm having a few problems getting my system to boot after upgrading to 11.04.This problem actually first arose when I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 a couple of weeks ago, however I found I was able to boot by loading a selecting a previous kernel version (2.6.31.22 was the latest version I could successful boot from) and as I was a bit busy with exams at the time I decided to leave it be temporarily as I at least had a functioning system.I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 and then finally to 11.04 today. The original problem persisted on the upgrade to 10.10 however I was at that point still able to boot using the older kernel version. On the restart after the upgrade to 11.04 however, the system now freezes when trying to boot from 2.6.31.22 or previous versions (the splash screen shows and then the system gets stuck on a blank screen with just a cursor visible, but remains responsive to mouse (cursor moves) and keyboard (goes into restart process on Ctrl-Alt-Del)).

I'm at a bit of a loss of what to do and would be massively grateful if anyone had any advice of where to start for a solution. I can access the system using a LiveCD - the output of the boot info script is attached.

Ubuntu Installation :: Wubi Boot Failure After Kernel Upgrade

Nov 27, 2010

I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 on our home theater PC through a wubi installation. Yesterday the system update installed a new kernel and today there is a problem booting the computer so I'm reluctantly using Windoze to type this. there isn't much information: the computer has always booted fine before the kernel update. When I select Ubuntu in the boot menu the screen goes black and the computer restarts. No error messages, no GRUB menu, just a blank screen before restart.

Fedora Installation :: F12 Upgrade - Boot Failure / No Root Device Found

Jun 1, 2010

I'm a long time Linux user. Finally got around to upgrading my Fedora 11 system to Fedora 12 by using the 'preupgrade' tool. The upgrade appeared to go well (downloaded packages, rebooted into installer, etc). However, now that the upgrade is complete, I'm unable to boot my system.

Here's my configuration:
/dev/sda (80Gb)
200Mb /boot partition (ext3)
52Gb / partition (ext4 - managed as logical volume)
2Gb swap partition (managed as logical volume)
20Gb /spare partition (ext3 - managed as logical volume) .....

All worked fine under Fedora 11 for the last few months. Grub now presents me with 'Fedora' and 'Windows XP' boot options. The /boot/grub/menu.lst file is essentially the same as it was for Fedora 11, except for the different kernel versions, etc. The boot sequence shows the Fedora bubble (??) and gets about 80% full when the screen goes black and the message displayed is:

No root device found
Boot has failed, sleeping forever
If I boot Windows, all works fine.

Am able to boot using a SystemRescueCD disk. The disks all look okay and I can mount/modify all partitions, etc. The grub menu.lst file read as follows (sorry, typed in, not copied):
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title Fedora (2.6.32.11-99.fc12.i686.PAE)
root (hd0,0) .....

Ubuntu Installation :: 10 Upgrade Failure On IBM X40?

May 31, 2010

Computer won't startup after upgrade from Ubuntu 9 to 10.04 Lucid.

Upgrade performed through Update Manager.

Have repeated this exercise with the same result. (After failed first time, reinstalled v9 successfully. Waited a few weeks then tried updating to v10 again. Same unsuccesful result as last time I tried it.)

Got one error message during upgrade: "Missing resoureces. The Network Manager Applet could not find some required resources. It cannot continue."

Upgrade otherwise appeared to operate smoothly.

But:

When upgrade complete, and on restart, the following happens:

Gets to purple start-up screen fine. The dots tick away for a little while, the hard drive accesses, then goes to blank screen and all stops. Nothing. Keyboard doesn't work. Screen backlit, but no-one's home.

Restart again makes no differnce.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 To 11.04 Upgrade Failure

May 2, 2011

I was running Ubuntu 10.10 and I was having issues with graphics card drivers so I decided to try upgrading to Natty using my Internet. The download went fine, the installation went fine (I sat and watched the computer the whole time. When I tried to upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 I had the same issue and ended up having to wipe my hard drive and start over from the CD). But right before the installation was finished, the screen went blank except for a tiny text-editing cursor and even the cursor froze. Also, the Caps Lock and the Num Lock lights were flashing in sync rapidly. After a while I forced it to shutdown and then restarted it. GRUB boots, giving me a list and the option to go to a command line, but if I select 2.6.38-8-generic or the recovery mode, it freezes and the lights flash as described above.

In other words, all I can get to is a very basic CLI through GRUB.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To 11.04 Failure - No Gui No Tty

Jul 25, 2011

Upgraded from 10.10 on my tower (scratch built, AMD Phenom II X6 1090T 3.2GHz, 16 GB RAM, 2x Sapphire Radeon HD6870 1GB) and it seems to have gone very wrong.

At the final post-installation reboot I get BIOS post, a black screen that hangs around alarmingly long, then the Ubuntu splash screen, then another black screen that seems, if anything, even MORE black (don't know how that works, but that's how it looks - it's not OFF but it's VERY black) and a whole lot of nothing going on.

Tried Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to a TTY session, no go, no reaction. Just my friendly black screen. Tried F2-F6 as well, same deal. Tried Ctrl-Alt-F7 through F12 on spec, also no response. So Control-SysRq-K... and I DO get a response - I get a black screen with a number in []s and SysRQ: SAK. No TTY. Still doesn't like Ctrl-Alt-F1.

No disk thrashing. Nothing but gently whirring fans and my error message.

-UPDATE I take it back, it finally gave me a TTY login.

So. Um. Any guesses what happened to my poor XWindows setup?

Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel Upgrade Failure 2.6.31.20

Feb 13, 2010

I'm running the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 9.10 on an AMD64 dual core platform with all the most recent upgrades installed. After the most recent Kernel upgrade version 2.6.31.20 the computer failed to boot correctly. Extremely slow getting to the desktop and a general failure to preload any programs that I load on boot. I had to uninstall and revert back to the previous Linux headers which solved the problem. If it makes any difference I have the machine setup as an apache2 server along with my standard desktop environment.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 9.10 To 10.04 Total Failure?

May 27, 2010

I ran the upgrade from ubuntu 9.10 yesterday and it's now a mess. Is there something I can do to refloat this ship?

The file download stage seemed to be working OK: I was watching it when it only had three minutes left to go. I went away and came back a few minutes later and the screen had gone black. OK I thought, this must be all part of the plan, so I went away and came back over an hour later: still nothing. I decided, perhaps foolishly, to press the power button and boot it up.

Eek! Now I get the following errors:

mounting none on dev failed: no such device

chroot:cannot execute /etc/apparmor/initramfs: no such file or directory

Then the message Ubuntu 10.04 LTS cruncher tty1 and a login prompt. I can log in OK but don't know what to do next to recover the situation.

Rather alarmingly there is some activity on the system: lots of messages beginning with a number like [22.71309.

Ubuntu Installation :: Failure To Load Following Kernel Upgrade

Feb 6, 2010

I successfully installed Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix on an Asus EeePC in a dual boot mode with Windows XP. Because the computer has no CD drive, I used a USB stick to download the files for installation. Twice now, after upgrading to a new kernel (2.6.31-17 and 2.6.31-19 I think), when rebooting after the upgrade and selecting Ubuntu from the operating system menu, I get a message:

sh:grub>

along with a notice about limited shell commands being available. The ls command results in:

(loop0) (hd0,3) (hd0,2) (hd0,1)

In trying some of the other commands, I get a message that a linux kernel isn't loaded. The computer still runs Windows fine - or at least as fine as Windows ever runs. I'd like to recover Ubuntu without doing another full installation.

Fedora Installation :: F14 Upgrade Failure Due To One Package?

May 28, 2011

I,ve tried upgrade from F14 to F15 using preupgrade, but I run into serious problem. Preupgrade downloaded all packages without problem and prompt me to reboot. After reboot installation process went ok. It was upgrading cca 1650 packages. But installation hung around package 1600 (almost on end) with message that openjpeg-devel-1.4-6.fc15.i686 cannot be installed and only option to end installer. After reboot I ended up with "kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)". It is still possible to enter grub menu, where I can choose upgrade to F15, but it fails again on that openjpeg-devel package. When I enter terminal after failure, I can see package is downloaded in preupgrade repo (and after moving somewhere else and running upgrade again it I got message that package is missing). Is there any possibility to skip this package installation or only option is fresh reinstall?

Ubuntu Installation :: Ext3-ext4 Upgrade Massive Failure?

Mar 21, 2010

The laptop I regularly use is out of use after having tried to upgrade from ext3 to ext4, following the instructions that can be found at namely, Step 2: Upgrading to Ext4Well, the first step was done without problems, but when I reached "Mount your filesystem", the problems started:When typingsudo mount -t ext4 /dev/XXXX /mntwhat appears is:UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLYStupid me, I did nothin but jump to the next step:gksu gedit /mnt/etc/fstabWhere I only got a fully white screen with no written text at all, instead of the menu that should have appeared, as can be seen on that webpage.

However, after running Gparted again, it showed the extension as EXT4, not EXT3, so I thought the system had automatically upgraded. Then I proceeded to boot the system, and this is where the massive failure appearedAfter seeing the Ubuntu logo for a while, the system directs me to a blank screen with the message:Mount of filesystem failed.dc5123-ec01-4438-8bd6-cb85bb080f87A maintenance shell will now be started.CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and re-try.root@hihihi-laptop:#So I type CTRL-D:

Ubuntu Installation :: Power Failure During Upgrade To Lynx - Kernel Panic?

May 2, 2010

I learned yesterday that doing a massive upgrade on my system while moving was a BAAAD idea. The upgrade process was going along just fine, it was all downloaded and was actually installing that last time I saw it. I unplugged my laptop to move a bookcase out, and completely forgot to plug it back in. After I got back from moving a load, I found my computer was off. I tried to boot up, and I got an error that kind of freaked me out. It reads as follows:

Code:kernel panic not syncing vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)I'm able to get to grub just fine, and my windows partition loads up just fine, but any of the linux kernels fail similarly when I attempt to load them.I'm sure that I can fix this, I just have no idea how. Probably has something to do with a live cd.

Ubuntu Installation :: Shutdown - Restart Failure - No Sound And Unable To Mount After Upgrade

Jul 22, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 on a dual-boot system with Windows 7. Yesterday I upgraded from 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24. After that, pressing the shutdown button and selecting shutdown or restart (whether on the login page or after I've logged in) will only bring me back to the login page. I can shutdown or restart if I do sudo shutdown now, but I'd prefer to use the GUI. Also, there is no sound now (not a big deal, but still not good). And I can't access my storage partition (not the windows7 partition, but a third ntfs partition with data on it). I get the error message that I am unauthorized to mount. I have the only account on this computer, so I should be authorized. This one is a HUGE problem for me, because I need to be able to access my data for work. None of these were problems before the upgrade.

Oh yeah, and quickstart is not enabled. Also, if I go to Power Management, and try to alter what to do when Power Button is pressed, my only option is Ask Me. I know these have been problems/solutions to the shutdown/restart problem in the past.
