CentOS 5 :: Allowing Apache To Write To Folder?

Jul 29, 2009

I'm a PHP developer and an app I'm working on right now generates files for users to download. The problem I'm seeing is in order to write to a folder I have to chmod it 777, obviously a bad idea.

I'm thinking the best idea is to change the folder user / group to that of apache, however after over an hour of Googleing I can not find out what user / group apache belongs to.

Thoughts? Is this the best way to go or should I do something else?

Ubuntu :: Allowing Apache To RW NTFS Mount

May 13, 2010

I keep my site files in an NTFS partition. When using Ubuntu, Apache gives me a forbidden 403 error when going to http://localhostI had this problem before, and if i remember correctly, to solve it I had to mount the hard drive as root when starting up, so I had this line in fstab:/dev/sda1 /media/Shared ntfs-3g quiet, defaults, locale=en_US.utf8,umask=000.But having that line there now doesn't make it work. It does mount Shared, and as root, but Apache still gives 403.

2. I have another P4 system on which Fedora Core 11 (SERVER Y) is running. I had connected 300GB SCSI HDD and created necessary partitions.

Now I want to mount few of the volumes of SERVER Y on SERVER X and allow users (samba clients) to access the volumes as folders as any other volumes in SERVER X through samba. I mounted one volume of SERVER Y in SERVER X using NFS mounting and shared through samba. The problem, I am facing, is it is very slow.

Ubuntu Servers :: Allowing FTP Access To External HD Connected To PC?

Apr 19, 2010

I have proftpd setup on my Aspire Revo (which I'm using as an HTPC) so that I can download files to my mac when I feel like watching in bed or whatever. I recently purchased a 1TB WD Elements to store my media. I have proftpd setup so that I can access every file on the computer. However, when I try to gain access to the Elements HD, I get an FTP error from Cyberduck that says:

/media/Elements: no such file or directory

Note that I have not formatted the drive or anything - just set it up straight out of the box. My media is loaded on to it, and XBMC reads the files fine. Is there a way I can enable the hard drive (or the OS) to share these files over FTP, or is this not possible?

General :: File-permissions On Read-only Media: Allowing For Access Without Chmod?

Mar 14, 2010

I've hit a wall here; I'm attempting to find some way by which to view files and cd into directories on a device mounted read-only. So I need the permissions to read, write, execute (and the same with directories), but chmodding is out of the question because I don't want to alter the drive one iota.

I guess what I could do--what I was thinking of initially--was to dupe the whole drive and then mess with permissions. This wouldn't affect the original (actually I'm working on a duplicate of the original, but I'm treating it as if it were the original) but I was hoping for something that would maintain data integrity. This is a forensic application and not altering the data is very important.

Ubuntu Servers :: Samba - Access Folder To Delete Or Restore From The Recycle Bin Folder

Apr 24, 2010

I'm using ubuntu server 9.10 for a home build NAS. Everything is working great just have one more thing to figure out. I have Samba set up to access my files and I set up a recycle feature so anything deleted will get moved to a Recycled folder. (I learned this the hard way after hitting delete key by accident while browsing the shares in windows. Lost 100 GB of data)

Now it is for the most part working but the permissions on folders isn't getting set right. If I delete a file in a share I can go to Recycle bin folder and delete the file for good. But if I delete a folder I can not access that folder to delete or restore from the Recycle bin folder. I have to chmod the folder before I can do anything with it. Anything I can change to get folders deleted via windows to have the right permissions when it is moved to the Recycle bin folder?

1) Set the Directory options to FollowSymLinks
2) Verified all directory and file permissions are at 755
3) Set permissions temporarily to 777 and received same error so I am assuming the issue is in a config file somewhere
4) in hhtpd.conf verified <Files ~ "^.ht"> is correct
5) verified the "default" directory is correct (/var/www/html)

Code:
ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ "/var/www/cgi-local/"

# "/var/www/cgi-bin" should be changed to whatever your ScriptAliased
# CGI directory exists, if you have that configured.
#
<Directory "/var/www/cgi-local">

I have also tried several variations. I left ScriptAlias at the default "/var/www/cgi-bin" and I have tried it with AllowOverride None and without the +ExecCGI after Options. I am getting a 404 error when a form has an action directed at a cgi script that is in cgi-local.

Debian :: Installed Apache - Doesn't Recognizes Folder?

I have just installed a Virtual Machine with Debian. My goal is to set up a LAMP server to work with. I have installed Apache, PHP and MySQL, everything without any problems and following WIKIs.

Now, I have a problem, because I'm trying to work with folder within my /var/www folder. If I use the address http://192.168.1.103 in my Host computer's browser, I can see the "It works!" from Apache without a problem.

Now, if I try to see: http://192.168.1.103/test/ I can't see the index.html that is within the folder test that is on the path: /var/www/test Why is this? What do I need to do and keep this simple?

OpenSUSE Network :: Local Apache Not Recongnizing New Folder?

Feb 5, 2011

I'm running OpenSuse 11.3 X64. I have installed apache2, PHP5 and MySQL in order to do some web-design offline e.g. they are for internal network use only. There is also phpMyAdmin installed. The default directory for the "server" is /srv/www/htdocs.

To access a specific site in progress I create a subfolder there then just navigate via h**p://10.13.23.201/NAMEOFFOLDER from my internal network. At least that is how it should work but it doesn't. I created a new folder called wlc so it's directory is /srv/www/htdocs/wlc however when I go to the address h**p://10.13.23.201/wlc I get a Remote Server Or File Not Found error from my browser, there is files in there ,index.php, that should load and apache has been set to recognize *.php files.

I know the theory should work as I can access /srv/www/htdocs/phpMyAdmin by going to h**p://10.13.23.201/phpMyAdmin and it loads just fine. Also the error is different if I go to a folder that doesn't exist for example h**p://10.13.23.201/THISFOLERDOESNTEXISIT will return an Object Not Found error.

General :: File / Folder Permissions And Groups On Linux With Apache?

Jun 26, 2010

I'm trying to learn about permissions on linux webserver with apache. Some clues to the system: The server I have to play around with is Fedora based. Apache runs as apache:apache. To allow for e.g. php to write to a file the file needs to be chmod 777. 755 is not sufficiant. What I'm wondering is basically how set up permissions like they should be on e.g. a "shared web host".My main problem is that if I set a permission so that one user cannot access anothers home folder, then apache can't read from the public_html folder either.

To keep the users out I need to set chmod 700. But to let apache to read I need to have at least execute on world,so a 701 basically works, but won't let some users in.So I'm really stuck on what to do. Have been concidering adding the apache user to the frous grours
below to avoid having to add the world execute flag, but is that a bad thing? Should it be the other way around, the users in the groups below should also be in the apache group?I was aiming at having 4 groups:

1. webapp: same as dev_int, but is the only one that can go inside the webapp/live folder to e.g. do an update from the repo.

2. dev_int: can read, write and execute everything in the "web root", including the two below, but nothing outside of the web root

3. dev_ext: can read write and execute in all client folders, but cannot access anything outside of the webapp root

4. clientsBasic ftp accounts. Has a home folder with a public_html, but cannot access any other home folders

Ubuntu Servers :: Apache Access Though VPN

Sep 1, 2010

just switched our company from windows server to linux and everything is going good except we have 4 vpn connections though out the country coming to our server. All giving the client machines ip addresses of 192.168.x.x based on where they are located 192.168.1.x for the main location 192.168.2.x for a second location etc, and IIS could see the clients ip instead of the wan ip and was setup to block all ips except 192.168.x.x ip's and this worked great.

So i set up apache the same way, to allow only 192.168 ip's but i guess it doesn't work that way in apache for connections coming though vpn? 2 out of our 4 VPN connections are not static IP's, so the 2 that are I just add that ip to the allow list and that worked. But i don't think we should HAVE to get static ips for the other 2, that's one of the benefits of using VPN, especially if our old windows server didnt need it.Is there any way for apache to see the clients ip address for access or is there something somewhere else that needs changed for this?

Ubuntu :: Can't Access Apache From The Internet

Feb 15, 2011

I can access dirac.org from inside my network; I can't access it from outside my home network. Apache is running on a Ubuntu box named "satan": 192.168.0.2 and I'm testing it from a MS Windows machine named "lucifer": 192.168.0.3. My ISP is optimum online, which does not filter port 80.

0. router
The router is a Netgear WNDR3700. All computers on my LAN receive their IP addresses via DHCP, but I've reserved all the IP addresses, so they are essentially static (satan is always 192.168.0.2, lucifer is always 192.168.0.3, etc). The router is set up to pass packets destined for port 80 to satan (192.168.0.2), which is where Apache runs.

1. tcpdump
Using tcpdump when accessing dirac.org from within the LAN (this is what works):
# tcpdump -i eth0 host ool-18bda2d2.dyn.optonline.net and tcp port 80
ool-18bda2d2.dyn.optonline.net.2826 > satan.www: Flags [S], seq 3934453911, win 65535, options [mss 1460,nop,nop,sackOK], length 0
