Server :: Apache - Free Access From Lan Users And Password Access To Wan Users ?
Jun 26, 2009
Im trying to config my intranet to be accessible from inside the network (lan) without need of password and ask for a passwd for those who are viewing from Wan ....
Today my intranet can only be accessed from Lan, external access give me an Unauthorized message, I took look around, try #irc and still can get the appropriated help, I hope that someone here could help me on that...
A piece of my config:

I am wondering how websites like banks are able to determine if you have previously used a certain computer to access the website, even if your router's IP address may have changed and your system's cookies have been cleared. I have users that need to access our HTTP intranet from outside locations. Those locations will have dynamic IP addresses most of the time, so I can't just "allow from [ip]" in my Apache proxy configuration. Originally we considered a VPN, but determined that a VPN will be overkill to access just an internal website, since we do not want external users to have permission to the rest of the network, only the website.I currently have it working over HTTPS with basic authentication against an internal LDAP server, but I want a little more security for such an important website.
crappy diagram:
[user]-->(internet via https)-->[apache gateway]-->(intranet)-->[http server]

My question is probably very common, but I didn't find an answer.I have several computers, each with different user. Each user has a shared folder in samba. I want all users to access all these shares with a single login/password (not with the login/passw of each particular user)

I find FTP server software confusing in Linux. Using ServU for Windows for an example, all I need to do is to create users via the ServU interface and choose a folder I want that user to have access to and their permissions, and viola, they can connect to that directory, and that directory only.
But in the the land of Linux, it apparently can't be managed this easy. I have a web server with multiple domains, and therefore multiple users need access to their own web root. So with that in mind, what FTP server software should I use (there are plenty out there) and how would I go about to create a user per domain, so that they can log in using FTP to manage their site, and only have access to their own web root, and nothing else?

In researching current ldap issue (not being able to do anything but log in) it seems that there are no concepts of privileges, roles, etc. that could be assigned to a user in LDAP.
I've only seen fields that deal with name, organization, etc., not with application-specific access control.
I have to assign certain access privileges to users authenticated via LDAP server based on the privilege level mentoned in the LDAP server. How to attain this.

Having set up many windows servers with complex permissions on shared folders, I now have to do the same in Linux (and I'm such a noob to Linux) I understand that each file/folder is assigned a user + group, and that the rights can be set for the user, the group and global (aka everybody else) My challenge is this, inside my shared folder there is a folder that should be RW to some users, READ ONLY to others, and not accessible at all to the rest of the users. (lets call the folder MyFolder ) All 3 groups have more than 1 user, so they have to be groups (right?) How would this model work in Linux ? If there is no other way, I guess I can nest the MyFolder in a folder that has permissions to allow all users that may access MyFolder, and block the rest, then on MyFolder, set owner group the RW users, and set global to READ ONLY.
Ps : The server I'm setting up runs Debian Lenny, files will be accessed from windows workstations using samba.

I installed Samba on CentOS, create a principal share called "public" . I want to populate this share with subfolders, and to grant access rights to specific folders for specific users. The content of "public" will be visible for all Samba users, but they will have read/write access only to the specified subfolders based on my security policy. I need the best way for doing this kind of stuff...

Debian 5.02 on an AMD 64. I removed iceweasel and installed Firefox. On my account, I can access the net ok from FF, but when I login as another user, I cannot get out.
During the iceweasel removal, I suddenly got dumped out. Trying to recover I ended up restarting the box. I then again went to the root and 'aptitude remove iceweasel' and it came back ok. Then I installed FF per [url]. This worked fine on my 32 bit laptop btw. I even added a guest acct and FF worked, but not so on my 64 bit box. Any ideas on where to go?
And the reason for FF was that some media was not playing with iceweasel as it was perhaps too old? I didn't think 3.06 was that old myself, but when I installed FF, the sites that weren't playing fired right up.

I am creating a new user for my son, but I don't want him to have access to M15+ games that are installed (eg Freedoom). Is there a way to deny a user's access to individual programs (or groups of programs). Also for the moment, I would really want him to only have access to a folder with his name on it and not to all of my drives and files on them. Is this possible? I couldn't find it anywhere...

I'm having all kind of problems with my ubuntu 10.04 which I updated to from the 9.10. I'm doing a clean install so I'd like to have this very clear. Right now I have three users:
1-the administrator
2-the one I use for music production
3-a general one.
The only one in which I can access synaptic is user 1. My question is: is there a way I can access to synaptic from the other users? I thought that you picked an admin password and if you were on a non admin account, by typing it you could use synaptic.

I just realized that I can access other users files and they can access my files simply by using the console to navigate the file system, Its not that big a deal, I am the only one using the computer but this seems like something is not configured correctly. Should each user be able to look at and modify each others files by default? (On Xubuntu 10)

I use this command line to add an FTP user:
useradd ftpuser1 -d /userdir
This works, but I don't want to give Shell access to the users.
I tried this:
useradd ftpuser1 -d /userdir -s /sbin/nologin
but then user can't login at all - not into FTP and not into Shell.

It looks like my web/ftp server has been hacked but I'm not sure how. I logged in tonight and found I had new mail. I read it and found some e-mails that had failed to send because I don't have mail setup (luckily). The e-mails were trying to send my user name and password to the e-mail address lostsoul2k@ymail.comI've no idea where to start, I use SSH, FTP now and then and it hosts a Wordpress site. The FTP users do not have access via SSH, only my user ID. However, the e-mails also contained another user ID that only has FTP access to the server.I've looked through the logs for rkhunter but it doesn't look like it found anything.

I'm using Sun One LDAP server, (Soon to be moving to openldap). I have one Master server, no slaves, about 60 user accounts.
I'd like to add an attribute to each of the users DN's to restrict there ability to login to specific hostnames. I.e. I have hosts A, B and C. Dev staff can access A and B, but not C, and support staff need to access all of them.
I found a link at [url] which talked about using 'hostsallowedlogin' and 'hostsdeniedlogin' attributes but I'm presuming these are bespoke. If they are, how do you configure the ldap.conf to take note of these attributes when authorizing access?

I am using Debian Lenny on a cluster. If I log in as a regular user and try to adjust the volume on the top right panel (Using Gnome), I get the following message"The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured. You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker icon on the panel and selecting "Remove From Panel" from the menu."or ifenter "gstreamer-properties" in the terminal and do a test I get the following message"Autodetect: Could not open resource for writing."
if I become the root user and enter "gstreamer-properties" in the terminal and do a test, the test works. Alsamixer works as root, but not as a user.My user error for alsamixer i"alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory"I am not sure what setting I need to change to which all users can adjust the volume.
