General :: File-permissions On Read-only Media: Allowing For Access Without Chmod?

I've hit a wall here; I'm attempting to find some way by which to view files and cd into directories on a device mounted read-only. So I need the permissions to read, write, execute (and the same with directories), but chmodding is out of the question because I don't want to alter the drive one iota.
I guess what I could do--what I was thinking of initially--was to dupe the whole drive and then mess with permissions. This wouldn't affect the original (actually I'm working on a duplicate of the original, but I'm treating it as if it were the original) but I was hoping for something that would maintain data integrity. This is a forensic application and not altering the data is very important.
I have created directories in root. I am looking for the chmod command to allow all users read and write permissions to a specific directory. I have done chmod 775 for a file but I need this for a directory. This includes permissions on all files and sub directories.
I own a particular file on a Linux system. I would like to give 2 groups (accounting, shipping) read access and only read access, and 3 users(Mike, Raj and Wally) write access and only write access. How can I accomplish this?
I had created a file under a directory & set the permissions through chmod command but when I create another file under this directory, I get the default permissions. Is this due to umask or can I set the file permissions through chmod under a directory.
I have apache2 running on my computer. I want to change the permissions for /var/www/ so that I can edit the files without a problem. Right now I can use the gksudo command, but I'd like to be able to have all the files available when using an IDE like eclipse. I've read in several places that Code: chmod 755 /var/www will do, but if I'm not mistaken that would give read/write access to anyone. I'm not in a production environment, so I'm not too worried about security, but I'd like to give anyone else as less permissions as possible. Would this be possible?
What are the possible problem when Windows access the file from Ubuntu got Read Only even though have a full permission to read, write and execute the file? Ubuntu to Ubuntu accessing the file there is no problem only Windows got a problem.
I was wondering, what if you had a flash drive formatted with an FS that has UNIX permissions. Then what if you copied some of your files onto it. And then put it into another computer that has a user account by the same name. WIll the user be able to access the files?What if you named your own user differently on the other computer, will you be able to get your files?
Binary files need only execute permission to execute. No read permission is required. But all executable files must be read by the kernel into main memory before executing. Also script files need both read and execute permissions for executing the file.
I want to simply mount an ext4 file-system onto a normal mount point in Ubuntu (/media/whereever), as read-writable for the current logged-in user, i.e. me.
I don't want to add anything into /etc/fstab, I just want to do it now, manually. I need super-user privileges to mount a device, but then only root can read-write that mount. I've tried various of the mount options, added it into fstab, but with no luck.
I would like not check first, and if not ok, then to write the permssisions. Means no use to write endessly on disk if not needed. How to check and fix the permissions to avoid writing (chmod o-rwx /home/*) ?
I run a small site and today I've discovered that my site is down. I found that cPanel has flagged the account suspended even though I haven't got any quotas on the account. I don't know what went wrong. I've tried to unsuspend the account in WHM but a certain part of the function failed.

After searching the internet someone mentioned that the problem might lie in the permissions of the public_html folder. I had a look at the permissions and the folder had no permissions d----- When I try to chmod the folder I get this error:
chmod: changing permissions of `public_html': Operation not permitted
I have no idea what to do next. All the files in the directory are locked too. I tried to move them but this command isn't allowed either. I ran these commands under the 'root' user in SSH.
I have a Qnap 219p NAS to which I have connected a USB external harddrive. I can access the external harddrive from my windows box using the network share, but at first i couldn't access the folders. The permissions set in the NAS GUI for the external drive is correct and are identical to the permissions set to the 2 internal drives.
I ssh'ed to the nas and used 'chmod -R 770 /share/external/sds1' - this granted me access to the folders, and some files. I can open all files in the root, but if I go just 2 folders 'deeper', i can't open the files in this folder, and in the folders after that.
In ssh, if i navigate to the folder wher I cannot open the files and use 'ls -l', i can see that the permissions (770) hasn't been applied to these files. How can I get chmod to apply the 770 permission to all files, folders, subfolders and files in subfolders etc., without having to chmod every folder one by one?
i have 3 shares on my samba. i have users - user, manager and boss projects is RW to everyone reference is R to everyone RW to manager and boss Proposals is RW only to boss, no access to others However when boss logs in and creates a directory in projects share, the directory can only be renamed bu users and manager, and directory contents are read only for users and managers, even deletion / rename is denied. How can i make sure that when ever boss creates a directory in projects, it retains base folder permissions and is writable to user this is my samba file... i am using red hat 6.1 with samba 3.5.6 (i think)
Can only read files on USB stick, and USB Drive. Can't copy, move or delete them due to restrictions/file permissions...."You are not the Owner...." etc. Can I remove all such permissions. I am the only user of this machine?
i have installed linux4 on vmware and now i am to copy any file but not able to paste it in any directories and when check the permissions there is no write permission for any of the directories .Not able to use chmod to change the directories permissions.
I'm trying to write a small application controlling spotify, running under wine, that I can run from my desktop computer and use via SSH on my mobile phone, and so far I've been quite successful. At least until just recently, when I tried to use the read command to read a single key-press on my phone, and use that input instead of having to type the number for item in the menu I've created. I tried to simply use the read command to silently listen to one key-press and output it to the variable opt. To do this I tried:
read -s -n1 opt
When I ran this in a shell-script this I got:
read: 1: Illegal option -s
Seeing this, I tried to remove the -s operator, which left me with:
read: 1: Illegal option -n
I decided to remove all operators and echo the variable opt, leaving me with:
read opt echo "$opt"
Which worked as expected. It echoed the key that I had pressed. I moved over to my terminal window and tried the read command from there, and it did exactly what it should. It silently recorded one key-press to the variable opt.
why isn't read working with operators in shell scripts?
On Ubuntu, there was this very sane feature (for laptop/desktop user): when you insert a thumbdrive or external usb media, the system mounts the media and sets all the correct permissions for the current non-root logged in user.
What do I have to change/edit/configure to make Fedora 15 behave like this?
I am setting up a new ubuntu server, and I am quite new to linux. This server will be used as code repository for a project I am going to be working on. I plan to setup 3 groups for users: dev, test, doc
- for various developers, testers and documentation users.
I would like to setup the following permissions on the main code repository directory:
dev - write permission test - execute permission doc - read permission public (anyone outside these groups) - deny all access
I am unsure what chmod setting to use, or if this is even possible in ubuntu.
