Ubuntu :: All Applications Crashing - Firefox, Thunderbird, Opera, OpenOffice?
Jul 13, 2010
For a couple of weeks, I have had constant crashes of all my applications on Lucid:Thunderbird 3.1 (updated since crashing started using Ubuntuzilla)Firefox 3.6.6 (updated since crashing started using Ubuntuzilla) - also crashes in safe mode OpenOffice 3.2 Opera 9.63 Most frequently it is Firefox and Thunderbird crashing, because they're the applications I use most. (Also F-Spot has crashed, but F-Spot frequently crashed before all this, so may not be related).
Sometimes applications will run for a few hours and then crash (either suddenly close or freeze, it varies). Other times the application crashes before it even opens, and I just get the Mozilla crash reporter. If an application won't start at all, it will usually start if I restart the computer, but may crash again soon afterwards. There is no obvious pattern to when it crashes - sometimes on starting, sometimes when I click something, sometimes when I'm not even at the computer and I just come back to find it crashed.
My husband (a programmer) has run Memtest on my machine, which found no problems. He is also running lucid on the same hardware apart from the monitors, and has the same versions of OpenOffice, Thunderbird and Firefox except for extensions, but has not any problems. A warning that shows on the terminal if Firefox crashes in safe mode, is:
WARNING: pipe error: Broken pipe: file /builds/slave/linux_build/build/ipc/chromium/src/chrome/common/ipc_channel_posix.cc, line 627
WARNING: pipe error (3): Connection reset by peer: file /builds/slave/linux_build/build/ipc/chromium/src/chrome/common/ipc_channel_posix.cc, line 404
This is strange because I did not, when that warning first appeared, have Chromium installed (although I did have Picasa). My husband installed Chromium on my machine after seeing the warning and Chromium is running okay so far but other applications are still crashing.

I'm trying to figure out why firefox and thunderbird keep crashing on me. I just installed Suse 11.3 64-bit with Gnome 2.30.0. I am using firefox version 3.6.12 and thunderbird version 3.1.6. They crash half of the time when something has to load, such as an attachment or download. Is there anything I can do about this?

Okay well here is what I notice in the syslog
Jan 3 23:52:38 Sai kernel: [ 3914.806177] __ratelimit: 3 callbacks suppressed
Jan 3 23:52:38 Sai kernel: [ 3914.806183] compiz.real[1908]: segfault at 11 ip 08055c2d sp bfccbb70 error 4 in compiz.real[8048000+34000]
Jan 3 23:52:38 Sai kernel: [ 3914.866575] operapluginwrap[2169]: segfault at b66a5030 ip 003cbd1d sp bff5e5d4 error 4 in libpthread-2.10.1.so[3c4000+15000]
[Code]....
It seems starting up gives a ton of errors I can't really isolate. The above boot errors are in no order. I just pasted them all together.
What happens is randomly when Im browsing through videos on ....., it crashes back to the login screen. Im guessing this has something to do with Opera's plugin/Sound/Pulse Audio.

I have another opera browser problem,i upgraded to version 10.53 build 6330 last week. it keeps crashing the cpu goes to 100% and wont come down, i had this problem with the previous version but its a lot worse with the new version.
also noticed that when browsing ebay the scroll is very jerky until you get about a third of the way down the page then it scrolls ok again.
i get the feeling the crashes are something to do with the flash player.
i tried to uninstall flash but i cannot get it to uninstall .

Whenever I try to copy and paste something from Opera to Thunderbird (or FireFox) the copied text does not appear when I select paste. (or control V) My work around is to place the copied text into a empty document, re-highlight, copy and then the paste into Thunderbird will work.
Opera Version: 10.61 Build 6430
Thunderbird 3.0.6
System x86_64, 2.6.32-24-generic

Im using firefox version 3.6.12 and it functions fine. However when i use the latest version of this addon https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...11377/#reviews the screen goes grey and firefox crashes. Restarting firefox only results in more crashes. I had a older version of this addon-1.5 i believe that worked fine.

- Firefox 3.6.8 (64 bit)
- Get Mail extension (v3.3.4),
- Thunderbird (3.1.1)
Problem:
Clicking "Read Mail" does nothing, whereas clicking "Compose Message" opens Thunderbird as expected. Thunderbird is properly configured under "System Settings > Default Apps > Email Client".
Whereas, switching the default email client back to Kmail results in the Get Mail "read mail" and "compose message" functions properly opening Kmail in both instances.
This problem occurred for me before (when using openSUSE v11.1 and earlier versions of the apps), but I don't recall how I eventually solved it, or whether it was resolved via an update of one of the above apps/extensions. Nonetheless, I'm now confronted by the very same problem again.

I have the xfce 4.6 desktop installed with Fedora 14 x64. First, I started having some problems, not sure if they are connected: the menu button on the panel somehow moved from the bottom left corner by itself, the window manager won't open, all windows (browser, programs, etc.) are cut off so that the strip with the minimize/maximize symbols up in the top-right corner is not visible, all windows open in top left-hand corner of screen and can't be moved, workspaces disappeared form the panel, unable to switch windows (have to close the window in focus to access another), typing in some applications (terminal, text editor) does nothing sometimes but works when I reopen them, etc.
.. After this had been going on for a while (few hours), I was changing the panel icons, and the bug report icon suddenly showed up and said that package gnome-1:0.8.1-10.git20100831.fc14 of the gnome network manager (xfce doesn't have it's own network manager?!) and the ibus keyboard layout switcher plugin had crashed. These don't seem to have anything to do with the troubles I'm having; the internet works fine. I have copies of the bug reports but I'm not sure if I should post them since the bug reporting tool warned me that they may contain sensitive information.

why fonts in Chrome and Opera/Firefox are so different, even though they're set the same (Arial and Times New Roman)?
For me, pages in Opera/Firefox are blurry and I'd prefer to make them look like those in Google Chrome.
How to do that? Especially in Opera?

Just a reminder, Firefox 3.0 will reach End of Life status with the upcoming release of Firefox 3.0.19. This may concern you if you are still on Jaunty (like me). You may want to search the forum on how to add the repository for a current version of Firefox or Opera. Anybody who knows what Canonical will do in such a situation if a critical bug shows up after Firefox 3.0 will no longer be supported, but Jaunty still is supported?

I run a mostly untouched CentOS server, nothing is installed except a server app to store data. The server has been crashing lately - after a year of no problems, so I looked into the logs of it and noticed weird discrepancies in the time around the time it crashs. So I started "watch date >> datefile" and this is what happens:
Code: Sun Oct 17 09:52:45 CEST 2010
Sun Oct 17 09:52:47 CEST 2010
Sun Oct 17 09:52:49 CEST 2010

I'm on Lucid.I don't know if this is a problem from the Windows Live space itself. But since a while ago, all the English text on Windows Live space are squeezed horizontally into little stems and thus illegible. It happens only to Firefox and Opera on Ubuntu (lucid in my case).I compared it with Firefox and Opera on Windows. They both work fine.

I know about !state=maxvert but this removes the titlebars on all applications.(any)&!(name=opera) will do this just for opera but the problem is when i unmaximize it the titlebar will still be gone. How can i make sure that all applications will have their titlebar when maximized exept opera and firefox, and all applications inclusing these 2 have titlebars when unmaximized?

I have posted the following below on the Ubuntu Forums but have not got a satisfactory answer yet. My problem is as follows:I have installed Xubuntu on my machine to test a setup I want to to for my in-laws. Everything went well until I realised I have a problem loading some pages on Firefox.
There is no error message but they are just stuck on loading and finally timing out. I have then downloaded Opera and I am showing the same problem. A bit of research showed it could be a IPV6 issue. I therefore disabled ipv6 in about:config and also /etc/modprobe.d/aliases - 'alias net-pf-10 ipv6' to alias 'net-pf-10 off ipv6'. No change - still can't get those pages loaded.

I have been using Ubuntu 10.10 for a few months now. I enjoy working with it, but there is one strange problem with Open Office (and Inkscape as well). When I attempt to work with either the word processor or spread sheet (this probably applies to other Open Office applications as well) under the default theme in Ubuntu, inevitably I get text and other elements blotted out with line smudges.
I have included a couple of screen shots, but I am wondering if this is a recurring problem with theme support (Open Office doesn't really use GTK/Gnome, does it?) or if it is some strange affect with the nvidia driver that I installed (version 260-19-06, my card is a GeForce Go 7150M). I have also noticed a slightly different problem, with Inkscape, where the ruler marks that track. The cursor movement don't delete themselves when the cursor moves, so the little triangles build up.

I have recently installed OpenOffice.org and I can't find any executable file that actually starts up OpenOffice.
What is the equivalent to the old "soffice" executable which previously would start up OpenOffice?
I installed by executing the "setup" program after extracting the archive, I selected pretty much all of the items to be installed (at least the essential ones) and then let it install -- I didn't get to choose the path to install to, but I saw it stated that this would be installed under /opt.
I see two directories:
Neither of which contains any readily identifiable file that is the main program. What file should I execute?

Support for ipv6 keeps being put into the kernel and now into browsers.I blacklisted ipv6 in Slackware and that solved the slow internet response until I updated to the latest Opera and Firefox browsers. Both were horribly slow again. Firefox could be reconfigured to kill ipv6 by running about:config as a url and disabling ipv6.
The new Opera 11 is different. I can't find any config to disable ipv6. Does anyone have an idea?I reverted to Opera 10.11 in order to have zippy internet access again, and not "dialup modem" speeds.

I want to move my Thunderbird mail and calendar functionality online, so I am looking for a decent web application. I like Roundcube for mail a lot but it doesn't support a calendar (yet). I require that it is possible to migrate / copy Thunderbird's mail and calender archives to this online application. It must be open source and reasonably mature / stable.
