Ubuntu :: Start Live Timing Caused Firefox To Become Unresponsive?
May 9, 2010Running a clean install of Lucid 64, I have a problem with the Firefox Java plugin with the "Live Timing" feature of the www,formula1.com site. Live Timing is an applet they provide that displays sector and lap time information for races, practice and qualifying sessions. It was working fine under Karmic 32 but no luck so far with Lucid 64.
Initially trying to start Live Timing caused Firefox to become unresponsive, I saw that the Java plugin being used was the IcedTea one, which I have heard can be a bit flakey. (Not sure what I was using under Karmic BTW).
I notice that the Sun proprietary Java stuff is installed - I presume when I installed ubuntu-restricted-extras. So I disabled the IcedTea plugin in Firefox and tried to use the Sun Java Moz plugin by creating a symlink to

Firefox then lists the Sun proprietary plugin under addons - plugins but it doesn't actually seem to do anything, as I just get an empty Window with the Live Timing Applet.

For me, pages in Opera/Firefox are blurry and I'd prefer to make them look like those in Google Chrome.

Mar 17, 2010Just a reminder, Firefox 3.0 will reach End of Life status with the upcoming release of Firefox 3.0.19. This may concern you if you are still on Jaunty (like me). You may want to search the forum on how to add the repository for a current version of Firefox or Opera. Anybody who knows what Canonical will do in such a situation if a critical bug shows up after Firefox 3.0 will no longer be supported, but Jaunty still is supported?

Jul 13, 2010For a couple of weeks, I have had constant crashes of all my applications on Lucid:Thunderbird 3.1 (updated since crashing started using Ubuntuzilla)Firefox 3.6.6 (updated since crashing started using Ubuntuzilla) - also crashes in safe mode OpenOffice 3.2 Opera 9.63 Most frequently it is Firefox and Thunderbird crashing, because they're the applications I use most. (Also F-Spot has crashed, but F-Spot frequently crashed before all this, so may not be related).
Sometimes applications will run for a few hours and then crash (either suddenly close or freeze, it varies). Other times the application crashes before it even opens, and I just get the Mozilla crash reporter. If an application won't start at all, it will usually start if I restart the computer, but may crash again soon afterwards. There is no obvious pattern to when it crashes - sometimes on starting, sometimes when I click something, sometimes when I'm not even at the computer and I just come back to find it crashed.
My husband (a programmer) has run Memtest on my machine, which found no problems. He is also running lucid on the same hardware apart from the monitors, and has the same versions of OpenOffice, Thunderbird and Firefox except for extensions, but has not any problems. A warning that shows on the terminal if Firefox crashes in safe mode, is:

This is strange because I did not, when that warning first appeared, have Chromium installed (although I did have Picasa). My husband installed Chromium on my machine after seeing the warning and Chromium is running okay so far but other applications are still crashing.

I know about !state=maxvert but this removes the titlebars on all applications.(any)&!(name=opera) will do this just for opera but the problem is when i unmaximize it the titlebar will still be gone.How can i make sure that all applications will have their titlebar when maximized exept opera and firefox, and all applications inclusing these 2 have titlebars when unmaximized?

My problem is as follows:I have installed Xubuntu on my machine to test a setup I want to to for my in-laws. Everything went well until I realised I have a problem loading some pages on Firefox.
There is no error message but they are just stuck on loading and finally timing out. I have then downloaded Opera and I am showing the same problem. A bit of research showed it could be a IPV6 issue. I therefore disabled ipv6 in about:config and also /etc/modprobe.d/aliases - 'alias net-pf-10 ipv6' to alias 'net-pf-10 off ipv6'. No change - still can't get those pages loaded.

Dec 29, 2010Support for ipv6 keeps being put into the kernel and now into browsers.I blacklisted ipv6 in Slackware and that solved the slow internet response until I updated to the latest Opera and Firefox browsers. Both were horribly slow again. Firefox could be reconfigured to kill ipv6 by running about:config as a url and disabling ipv6.
The new Opera 11 is different. I can't find any config to disable ipv6. Does anyone have an idea?I reverted to Opera 10.11 in order to have zippy internet access again, and not "dialup modem" speeds.
Ubuntu Networking :: Certain Websites Are Timing Out?
Jan 1, 2010I am having, just installed a fresh 9.10. The only thing I did was an update and installed the wireless drivers. Well i went to to download my favorite browser Opera and firefox just times out. I can get to other websites just fine so far. Though it looks like Office Depot won't let me in either. If I boot into Windows I can connect to either site just fine.

Jul 17, 2011I have a complex network. ADSL broadband comes into the house and connects to an Orange Livebox. An Ethernet cable then connects the Livebox to a more powerful router, a DrayTek Vigor 2710Vn. The reason for this is that the Livebox has a second line capability using Voip, but it is not powerful enough to get around my stone house. The DrayTek router has Voip capability, but as yet Orange will not connect the Voip line to it. I connect to this system with Ubuntu. Android, Windows and I-phone. I can connect to either of the routers, though I usually use the DrayTek.
Voip on the Livebox does not require a computer to run it, you just plug a normal phone into it and use it to get free calls. I actually take this line into a Panasonic telephone switch to give me a 2 line system around the house. The problem with this set-up is that after a short time something happens to the network which prevents Ubuntu computers connecting to it. Windows machines, I-phones and Android phones connect, but Ubuntu does not. If I re-boot the Livebox, or in an extreme case take it back to it's factory settings, the Ubuntu machines can connect again, but it's only temporary.
The fact that fixing Livebox sorts the problem definitely points to Ubuntu being innocent, but at the moment I can't do without the Livebox. That means, for the moment, having to stay with Windows. If I post the output log after a failed connection attempt, all it would show is the connection timing out. Why is Ubuntu so sensitive to network problems that are not of it's making. Is there anything I can do about it other than changing my ISP. I am considering that, but other factors make that difficult.

Feb 5, 2010I have setup a box using RHEL-5 inside a private network, no outside connections, and I've got a Symmetricom bc635PCI-V2 clock card installed and working. It's getting GPS time via IRIG-B feeding the PCI card from a TrueTime GPS receiver. I need to setup the NTP software to use the time from the PCI card. Which means I need to setup a /dev/refclock-? symbolic link to the driver as far as I know? I can't find any documentation on the bc635 card that associates the refclock to the driver. Does anyone know what settings I need to use in the server line of the ntp.conf file?

My proble is when i change to other workspace and then go back to opera, sometime, it will have the typing problem (at search bar and address bar). Need to roll it up and then roll it down before can type again. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit with latest updated.
However, the opera (same version and get from the same source: [URL]) does not have the same problem on Linux Mint 8 (dual-boot with ubuntu 9.10). As i know Linux Mint 8 is based on ubuntu 9.10.

Aug 28, 2010Have had issues with my 10.4 Server regularly. I believe it's something that I've done wrong in some of the hosts settings or the like. When I try and login to the server, especially on startup, I get messages saying the login attempt timed out after 60 seconds and when I login via ssh it boots me from the connection after about 60 seconds of trying to login. It's after entering the password so it's something to do with authentication most likely. I think the issue is with my /etc/hosts file as I said before. Hostname is blackbox and it's only meant to be a local network server.

May 8, 2011I ran the Kvpnc wizard and imported my config file and when I try to connect it always says connection timed out.I can connect to OpenVPN without a problem using the terminal, all I can say is kvpnc is a real pain and I don't get why I can't connect with it if I can connect without a problem from the terminal.I thought this was suppose to be a simple GUI that you just imported your config add in your cert and the cert path and that's all.

It seems to find a ton of updates and takes a long while to DL everything.Do I have to tell it to install the downloads? I don't think I do...I get some errors about timing out for the last few updates.theni reboot, but when i check redhat-release it still says 5.3
Fedora :: SSH Not Working / Timing Out After Upgrade
May 19, 2011A few weeks ago I upgraded one of my laptop from Fedora 13 to Fedora 14 (using pre-upgrade). The upgrade went smoothly and no errors appeared. However ever since the upgrade ssh is not working anymore. I've tried various servers inside and outside the local network. I can't contact any of them. In all cases I get:

- checked internet connection. No problem there. Another laptop is working fine using the same connection and the same ethernet cable. That laptop is still using Fedora 13, since I didn't want to get stuck without ssh completely.
- checked "messages" log. No messages at the time of ssh connect attempt.
- checked "secure" log. No messages at the time of ssh connect attempt.
- checked the firewall settings. The settings are exactly the same as before the upgrade (when ssh was still working). Moreover, the settings are the same as the other laptop that is working.
- temporarily switched off the firewall. No difference.
- temporarily switched off selinux. No difference.
So it doesn't seem to be a firewall or selinux problem. And I know the connection is working, so it does not seem to be a routing problem either. What am I missing here?
System specs:
- Asus EEE PC (1 GB RAM, intel atom processor);
- Fully up-to-date Fedora 14 (kernel 2.6.35.13-91.fc14.i686)
